Cu-doped NiO thin films by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis: structural, optical, and electrical characterization

Güney, Harun; İskenderoğlu, Demet; Akdağ, Adem; Karadeni̇z, Sibel Morkoç; Güldüren, Muhammed Emin

Undoped and Cu-doped nickel oxide (Cu:NiO) thin films were deposited on glass substrates by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis using Cu concentrations of 1, 2, 4, and 8 wt%. The influence of Cu incorporation on the structural, morphological, optical, Raman, photoluminescence, and temperature-dependent electrical properties of the films was systematically investigated. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the formation of polycrystalline cubic NiO with a preferred (111) orientation and no detectable secondary phases. The crystallite size increased at low Cu concentrations and decreased at higher doping levels because of defect-induced suppression of grain growth. SEM observations showed that Cu doping modified the surface morphology and grain distribution. The optical band gap decreased from 3.86 to 3.60 eV with increasing Cu content. Raman and photoluminescence analyses indicated that Cu incorporation altered the defect structure and increased non-radiative recombination. Temperature-dependent current–voltage measurements revealed typical negative temperature coefficient behavior, with conductivity increasing as both Cu concentration and temperature increased. These results demonstrated that controlled Cu doping effectively modified the structural, optical, and electrical properties of NiO thin films, making them promising materials for optoelectronic and sensing applications.

Yavuz, Emre; Dundar, Ozan Ali; Yavuz, Sevtap Caglar; Yilmaz, Erkan; Ozdokur, Kemal Volkan; Cirak, Burcu Bozkurt; Caglar, Bulent; Cirak, Cagri; Arar, Özgür

Introduction: Transition metal oxides are highly effective for dye removal due to their adaptable surface chemistry, availability, and robust mechanical and thermal properties. Among them, Bi4V2O11 nanosheets offer potential due to their morphology and high surface area. To synthesize Bi4V2O11 nanosheets and evaluate their performance in removing malachite green, focusing on the impact of adsorbent amount, contact time, and interfering ions on dye removal efficiency. This study aims to evaluate the performance of Bi4V2O11 nanosheets in removing malachite green dye from aqueous solutions and to examine the effects of adsorbent dosage, contact time, and the presence of coexisting ions on the sorption process. Methods: Bi4V2O11 nanosheets were synthesized and used to remove the malachite green dye. Batch experiments were conducted to study the effects of adsorbent dose, contact time, and coexisting ions (Na+, Ca2+, and tannic acid). Equilibrium data were fitted to the Langmuir isotherm model to determine the maximum sorption capacity. Results: Malachite green sorption using Bi4V2O11 nanosheets reached equilibrium within 240 minutes, demonstrating efficient dye removal under the tested conditions. The sorption process conformed to the Langmuir isotherm model, indicating monolayer adsorption with a maximum capacity of 47.27 mg/g. While the presence of Na+ and tannic acid had negligible effects on dye removal efficiency, the coexistence of Ca2+ significantly reduced the removal efficiency from 95% to 58%, highlighting the potential impact of divalent ions on the adsorption process. Discussion: Bi4V2O11 nanosheets are effective adsorbents for malachite green removal, demonstrating high sorption capacity and resilience to Na+ and tannic acid interference. However, the presence of Ca2+ significantly reduces removal efficiency, highlighting the need for further optimization in practical applications. Conclusion: Bi4V2O11 nanosheets offer high sorption capacity and structural stability, environment friendly synthesis procedure, making them feasible for small-scale or pre-treatment applications. 2026, Bentham Science Publishers

Optimization of MXene/CNT free-standing composite electrodes for enhanced electrochemical performance in symmetric supercapacitors

Yesilbag, Yasar Ozkan; Salih, Ahmed Jalal Salih

The integration of one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) materials into three-dimensional (3D) structures shows great potential for improving energy storage. This study investigates the optimization of interlayer spacing in MXene structures by incorporating conductive materials. Free-standing Ti3C2Tx MXene and carbon nanotube (CNT) composite electrodes were fabricated via vacuum filtration, with CNT weight ratios of 10 %, 20 %, and 30 %. The MXene/CNT10 (MX1) composite exhibited superior electrochemical performance, with a specific capacitance of 254 F g⁻1 and remarkable durability, retaining 101.2 % of its initial capacitance after 10,000 cycles. A symmetric supercapacitor (SSC) using the MX1 electrode achieved a stable voltage window of 0–1.2 V, a specific capacitance of 70.1 F g⁻¹, and retained 85 % of its capacitance after 5000 cycles. With an energy density of 14.1 Wh kg⁻1 and a power density of 13.9 kW kg⁻1, MXene/CNT composites demonstrate significant potential for advanced energy storage applications.

Search for dark matter production in association with bottom quarks and a lepton pair in proton-proton collisions at s=13 TeV

    Chekhovsky, V.; Hayrapetyan, A.; Makarenko, V.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J.W.; Benato, L.; Bergauer, T.; Damanakis, K.; Dragicevic, M.

A search is performed for dark matter produced in association with bottom quarks and a pair of electrons or muons in data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to 138 fb−1 of integrated luminosity of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. For the first time at the LHC, the associated production of a bottom quark-antiquark pair and a new heavy neutral Higgs boson (H) that subsequently decays into a leptonically decaying Z boson and a pseudoscalar (a) is explored. The latter acts as a dark matter mediator in the context of the two Higgs doublet model plus a pseudoscalar (2HDM+a). Multivariate techniques that target a wide range of mass configurations for the H and a particles are used. The observations are consistent with the expectations from standard model processes. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the product of cross section and branching fraction of the new particles, ranging from 10−2 pb for an H mass of 400 GeV to 10−3 pb for an H mass of 2000 GeV. Constraints on the parameter space of a benchmark 2HDM+a model are derived and compared with expectations in the context of cosmological predictions.

Measurements of tt¯W differential cross sections and the leptonic charge asymmetry at s=13 TeV

    Hayrapetyan, A.; Makarenko, V.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J.W.; Benato, L.; Bergauer, T.; Dragicevic, M.; Giordano, C.; Hussain, P.S.

Measurements of properties of top quark-antiquark pair production in association with a W boson in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV are presented, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1, recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. Events are selected based on the presence of either two leptons with the same electric charge or three leptons, and multiple jets and b-tagged jets. We present measurements of differential production cross sections as a function of kinematic variables sensitive to different aspects of the process modeling, using a multivariate discriminator in the two-lepton selection region and a simple selection-based method in the three-lepton region. The normalized cross section measurements are generally consistent with the standard model expectations, while we observe larger values compared to the expectations in the absolute cross section measurements, consistent with previous inclusive cross section measurements. In addition, we measure the leptonic charge asymmetry of this process, obtaining an observed value of Acℓ=−0.19−0.18+0.16, consistent with the expectation of −0.085 ± 0.006 predicted by next-to-leading order simulations.

Probing the flavour structure of dimension-6 EFT operators in multilepton final states in proton-proton collisions at s=13 TeV

    Hayrapetyan, A.; Makarenko, V.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J.W.; Benato, L.; Bergauer, T.; Dragicevic, M.; Giordano, C.; Hussain, P.S.

An analysis of the flavour structure of dimension-6 effective field theory (EFT) operators in multilepton final states is presented, focusing on the interactions of quarks with Z bosons. For the first time, the flavour structure of these operators is disentangled by simultaneously probing the interactions with different quark generations. The analysis targets the associated production of a top quark pair and a Z boson, as well as diboson processes in final states with at least three leptons, which can be electrons or muons. The data were recorded by the CMS experiment in the years 2016–2018 in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1. Consistency with the standard model of particle physics is observed and limits are set on the selected Wilson coefficients, split into couplings to light- and heavy-quark generations.

Jet fragmentation function and groomed substructure of bottom quark jets in proton-proton collisions at 5.02 TeV

    Chekhovsky, V.; Hayrapetyan, A.; Makarenko, V.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J.W.; Benato, L.; Bergauer, T.; Chatterjee, S.; Damanakis, K.

A measurement of the substructure of bottom quark jets (b jets) in proton-proton (pp) collisions is presented. The measurement uses data collected in pp collisions at s=5.02 TeV, with a low number of simultaneous interactions per bunch crossing, recorded by the CMS experiment in 2017, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 301 pb−1. An algorithm to identify and cluster the charged decay daughters of b hadrons is developed for this analysis, which facilitates the exposure of the gluon radiation pattern of b jets using iterative Cambridge-Aachen declustering. The soft-drop-groomed jet radius, Rg, and momentum balance, zg, of b quark jets are presented. These observables can be used to test perturbative quantum chromodynamics predictions that account for mass effects. Because the b hadron is partially reconstructed from its charged decay daughters, only charged particles are used for the jet substructure studies. In addition, a jet fragmentation function, zb,ch, is measured, which is defined as the distribution of the ratio of the transverse momentum (pT) of the partially reconstructed b hadron with respect to the charged-particle component of the jet pT. The substructure variable distributions are unfolded to the charged-particle level. The b jet substructure is compared to the substructure of jets in an inclusive jet sample that is dominated by light-quark and gluon jets in order to assess the role of the b quark mass. A strong suppression of emissions at small Rg values is observed for b jets when compared to inclusive jets, consistent with the dead-cone effect. The measurement is also compared with theoretical predictions from Monte Carlo event generators. This is the first substructure measurement of b jets that clusters together the b hadron decay daughters independent of the b hadron species and decay channel.

    Hayrapetyan, A.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J.W.; Benato, L.; Bergauer, T.; Chatterjee, S.; Damanakis, K.; Dragicevic, M.; Hussain, P.S.

A novel machine-learning-based flavor-tagging algorithm combining same-side and opposite-side tagging is used to obtain the equivalent of 27 500 tagged (Formula presented) decays from (Formula presented) collisions at (Formula presented), collected by the CMS experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of (Formula presented). A time- and flavor-dependent angular analysis of the (Formula presented) final state, consistent with a (Formula presented) decay, is used to measure parameters of the (Formula presented) system. The weak phase is measured to be (Formula presented), which, combined with the (Formula presented) CMS result, gives (Formula presented). This value differs from zero by 3.2 standard deviations, providing the first evidence for mixing-induced (Formula presented) violation in (Formula presented) decays. All measured physics parameters are found to agree with standard model predictions where available.

Measurement of the dineutrino system kinematic variables in dileptonic top quark pair production in proton-proton collisions at s=13 TeV

    Chekhovsky, V.; Hayrapetyan, A.; Makarenko, V.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J.W.; Benato, L.; Bergauer, T.; Damanakis, K.; Dragicevic, M.

Differential top quark pair production cross sections are measured in the dilepton final states e+e−, μ+μ−, and e±μ∓, as a function of kinematic variables of the two-neutrino system: the transverse momentum pTνν of the dineutrino system, the minimum distance in azimuthal angle between p→Tνν and leptons, and in two dimensions in bins of both observables. The measurements are performed using CERN LHC proton-proton collisions at s=13 TeV, recorded by the CMS detector between 2016 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1. The measured cross sections are unfolded to the particle level using an unregularized least squares method. Results are compared with predictions by the standard model of particle physics, and found to be in agreement with theoretical calculations as well as Monte Carlo simulations.
