Base station selection with 3GPP tr 38,901 channel model based multiobjective nsga-ii algorithm

    Çelik, Hüsamettin

The increase in data demand in mobile communication systems, parallel to the increase in the number of users, has led to serious problems encountered in the base station selection processes in 5G and beyond wireless networks. The distance between the base station and the user, and the signal attenuation caused by this distance, lead to poor signal quality and interference. Effective base station selection plays a critical role in improving the overall performance of communication networks. In traditional base station selection, the desired performance cannot be achieved because the maximum Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) cannot optimize interference and load balancing. Based on these problems, this study created a realistic channel model for the 5G system using the 3GPP TR 38.901 channel model and addressed base station selection. This selection process was formulated using a multi-objective optimization method and solved with the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-II). The simulation solution was obtained by considering the maximization of signal quality and the minimization of the distance between the base station and the user as the objective functions used in the NSGA-II algorithm. The results obtained showed that the proposed method provides more balanced and efficient solutions and increases the performance rate.

Possibility of Being a Woman Behind Prison Walls: A Study on the Oppression Experiences of Women Correctional Officers in Turkey

    Canalan, Elif; Gökçearslan, Elif

Prison employees, much like the concepts of crime and punishment, are often predominantly associated with men. While the role of correctional officer has become a recognized career option for women, concerns remain about how well prisons accommodate women officers. This study explores the oppression factors experienced by 40 female correctional officers from 26 prisons in Turkey through in-depth interviews using a qualitative approach. The findings reveal significant social, organizational, gender-based, relational, and prison population-related oppressions. In addition to social stigmatization, lack of support, and the pressure to conform to masculine behaviors, female officers face hostility and resistance from inmates, colleagues, and supervisors; this is further reinforced by the hyper-masculine work environment and deeply entrenched patriarchal structures. The study emphasizes the urgent need for gender-sensitive policies and practices within the Turkish criminal justice system, advocating for a more inclusive and equitable work environment to help address entrenched inequalities.

Seasonal variability and reproductive investment influence oxidative metabolism in fish; however, the relationship between reproductive dynamics and antioxidant responses in freshwater cyprinids remains insufficiently understood. This study investigated seasonal and biological factors affecting antioxidant biomarkers in the gonads of Capoeta umbla and Capoeta trutta inhabiting the Karasu River (Türkiye). A total of 152 individuals were examined between April 2023 and March 2024, and reproductive indices (total body weight, gonad weight, and gonadosomatic index) were evaluated together with oxidative stress biomarkers, including malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione reductase (GR), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx). Multivariate analyses (PERMANOVA, SIMPER, and principal coordinate analysis) were used to determine the factors shaping oxidative responses. Females exhibited higher reproductive investment, while reproductive activity increased during spring and summer, accompanied by elevated MDA levels and antioxidant enzyme activities. PERMANOVA identified season as the primary factor explaining variation in oxidative biomarkers (p = 0.001), followed by reproductive parameters, and PCO revealed clear seasonal separation among groups. These findings indicate that oxidative balance in gonadal tissues is strongly associated with seasonal reproductive cycles and environmental variability in wild freshwater cyprinids.

Seasonal Dominance over Morphometric Effects in Regulating Antioxidant Defense in Two Freshwater Capoeta Species

Kırıcı, Muammer; Özdemir, Nurgül Şen; Güneş, Muharrem; Sökmen, Teoman Özgür; Caf, Fatma; Türk, Cebrahil; Demir, Nurullah

Antioxidant defense systems in fish are highly sensitive to environmental variability and provide valuable indicators of physiological stress in aquatic ecosystems. This study evaluated the combined effects of seasonal variation, morphometric parameters (total length, total weight, and condition factor), sex, and species identity on oxidative stress markers and antioxidant defense responses in Capoeta umbla and Capoeta trutta collected from the Karasu River (Türkiye). Fish were seasonally sampled between April 2023 and March 2024, and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and the activities of key antioxidant enzymes, including superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and glutathione reductase (GR), were analyzed in edible muscle tissues. Length–weight relationships and Fulton’s condition factor were calculated to describe growth patterns and physiological status. The results indicated that seasonal variation was the primary factor influencing oxidative stress responses and antioxidant defense patterns in both species. Higher oxidative stress levels and increased antioxidant enzyme activities were generally observed during the summer period, reflecting physiological responses to elevated environmental temperatures. Morphometric parameters and species identity showed comparatively weaker associations with antioxidant variability. Overall, the findings highlight the dominant role of seasonal environmental dynamics in regulating oxidative balance in freshwater Capoeta species and support the use of antioxidant biomarkers as effective tools for assessing ecosystem health under changing environmental conditions.

The Effect of Digital Games on The Mathematical Reasoning Skills of Preschool Children

Deleş, Bayram; Özenoğlu, Yunus Emre; Aydoğdu, Fatih

This study was conducted to test the effect of a digital game-based educational program on the mathematical reasoning skills of preschool children. The research was conducted according to the semi-experimental pattern with pre-test-post-test control group; a total of 22 children (60–71 months), including 10 participants in the experimental group and 12 participants in the control group, were included in the study. While the children in the experimental group participated in the digital game-based educational program, no applications were made to the children in the control group. The digital game-based training program consists of activities that develop mathematical reasoning skills, such as measurement, probability, prediction, and cause-effect relationships. Digital game-based activities were developed with Adobe Illustrator CC, Adobe Photoshop CC and artificial intelligence programs. In the research, measurement tools were applied to the study groups (experiment-control) before and after the application. As a result, it was determined that the mathematical reasoning skills of the children in the experimental group increased significantly compared to the children in the control group. The results show that digital game-based educational applications can be used to improve the mathematical reasoning skills of preschool children.

From Custody to Support: Exploring the Psychosocial Potentials of Female Correctional Officers in Turkey

    Çetintaş, Elif; Gökçearslan, Elif

This qualitative study examines the complex, contradictory, and multidimensional roles of female correctional officers (COs) in Turkish prisons through reflexive thematic analysis. Based on interviews with 40 female COs across 26 prisons, the findings show that officers often provide prison residents with informal psychosocial support to compensate for institutional gaps. However, the absence of clear role definitions, adequate training, and organizational support positions them as unprepared “de facto crisis managers” in cases of suicide attempts, self-harm, or withdrawal crises. The results highlight a persistent role conflict between care and control, shaped by gendered expectations, prison culture, and structural deficiencies.

Performance Analysis of Modulation Strategies in Single-Phase HBNPC Inverter Across Variable Operating Conditions

    Cavli, Nazlican; Ozkop, Emre

This study investigates the performance of a single-phase 5-level H-Bridge Neutral Point Clamped (HBNPC) inverter across various operating conditions. These conditions encompass variations in output power, frequency, modulation index, and modulation techniques. To adapt modulation strategies typically employed in three-phase inverter structures, we apply them to a single-phase HBNPC inverter. The modulation strategies under consideration include level-shifted (LS) based on phase disposition pulse width modulation (PD-PWM), third harmonic injection pulse width modulation (THI-PWM), space vector pulse width modulation (SV-PWM), and modified PWM (MPWM). These strategies are developed using different types of reference signals (RS) and carrier signals (CS). Initially, we analyze the inverter's output voltage and current waveforms across various modulation strategy states. Subsequently, we explore the relationships between efficiency, total harmonic distortion (THD), and variable output power across different modulation strategy states. We uncover distinct patterns between modulation strategy-THD, efficiency, and output voltage for maximum inverter output power. Furthermore, we examine the relationship between the modulation index and THD for each modulation strategy state, considering different switching frequencies. Additionally, we investigate the relationship between switching frequency and THD across different modulation index values, approaching the analysis from multiple perspectives.

Nonlinear Convergence Factor Based Grey Wolf Optimization Algorithm and Load Frequency Control

Hocaoglu, Gokce Sena; Cavli, Nazlican; Kilic, Elcin; Danayiyen, Yahya

In this paper, various type of nonlinear convergence factors based Grey Wolf optimization (GWO) is proposed to optimally compute the Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller gains to control the grid frequency in a single area power system. The PID gains in the controlled system are optimally determined by using GWO algorithm, considering the cost function, integral of time-weighted absolute error (ITAE). The efficiency of the designed control system is verified under constant and variable loads, and the comparative results are given for controlled and uncontrolled cases. Moreover, the GWO algorithm is investigated by using linear and nonlinear convergence coefficients comparatively. The model of the control system is constructed using MATLAB, and the results indicate that the transient and steady state responses are superior to those of the linear coefficients when the nonlinear convergence coefficients are applied in GWO.

Blind Source Separation with Strength Pareto Evolutionary Algorithm 2 (SPEA2) Using Discrete Wavelet Transform

    Celik, Husamettin; Karaboga, Nurhan

This paper presents a new method for separating the mixed audio signals of simultaneous speakers using Blind Source Separation (BSS). The separation of mixed signals is an important issue today. In order to obtain more efficient and superior source estimation performance, a new algorithm that solves the BSS problem with Multi-Objective Optimization (MOO) methods was developed in this study. In this direction, we tested the application of two methods. Firstly, the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) was used to eliminate the limited aspects of the traditional methods used in BSS and the small coefficients in the signals. Afterwards, the BSS process was optimized with the multi-purpose Strength Pareto Evolutionary Algorithm 2 (SPEA2). Secondly, the Minkowski distance method was proposed for distance measurement by using density information in the discrimination of individuals with raw fitness values for the concept of Pareto dominance. With this proposed method, the originals (original source signals) were estimated by separating the randomly mixed male and two female speech signals. Simulation and experimental results proved that the efficiency and performance of the proposed method can effectively solve BSS problems. In addition, the Pareto front approximation performance of this method also confirmed that it is superior in the Inverted Generational Distance (IGD) indicator.
