Patient vs. physician narratives on refractive surgery in Turkish YouTube videos: a comparative reflexive thematic analysis

    Gürsoy, Nurcan; Gürsoy, Ersan

Correctable refractive errors are a major, preventable cause of visual impairment. Refractive surgery is widely promoted online, yet how Turkish-language YouTube videos frame benefits, risks, recovery, and long-term outcomes—and how this framing differs between patient and physician narrators—remains underexplored. We aimed to qualitatively compare patient- and physician-generated Turkish-language YouTube videos on refractive surgery and to describe audience engagement. We conducted a reflexive thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke) of 64 publicly available videos (29 patient, 35 physician) meeting predefined criteria (Turkish; primarily refractive surgery; ≥1 min; ≥1,000 views; ≥240p). Searches were performed on 15 July 2025 using predefined search strings. Videos were transcribed verbatim and inductively coded in NVivo by two researchers. Between-group differences in engagement metrics were assessed with Mann–Whitney U tests, with a one-video-per-channel sensitivity analysis to address potential clustering. Patient narratives foregrounded lived experience (decision-making, perioperative discomfort, postoperative visual fluctuations, and symptoms such as dry eye and glare/halos) and often raised concerns about commercialization. Physician narratives emphasized candidacy assessment, procedure selection, recovery timelines, and risk mitigation. In the one-video-per-channel sensitivity analysis (patient n = 27; physician n = 23), patient videos received more likes (median 300 [IQR 1,639] vs. 59 [269], p = 0.009) and showed a higher like-to-view ratio (0.013 [0.01] vs. 0.006 [0.01], p < 0.001), whereas view counts were not significantly different (24,000 [98,900] vs. 18,000 [48,500], p = 0.224). Turkish-language YouTube narratives share experiential touchpoints but diverge systematically in how risks, commercialization, and expectations are framed by patients versus physicians. Findings support the need for balanced, accurate, and discoverable patient-facing materials tailored to platform dynamics.

Managing diagnostic uncertainty in primary care: a mixed-methods study of family physicians’ experiences in Türkiye

Nas, Mehmet Akif; Karahan, Harun; Gürsoy, Ersan

Background: Clinical uncertainty is an inherent component of primary care practice. Family physicians frequently face diagnostic ambiguity, time pressure, and limited access to diagnostic resources, which may affect decision-making and patient outcomes. However, evidence on how family physicians in Türkiye manage diagnostic uncertainty remains limited. Methods: This mixed-methods study included 20 family physicians practicing in primary care settings in Türkiye. Quantitative data were collected using the Physicians’ Reactions to Uncertainty Scale (PRUS) and the Melbourne Decision-Making Questionnaire I-II (MDMQ). Semi-structured interviews were then conducted and analyzed thematically using the Braun and Clarke framework. Results: Quantitative findings showed moderate-to-high emotional reactions to uncertainty and variation in decision-making styles among participants. Thematic analysis of the interviews revealed six key themes: diagnostic challenges and systemic barriers as major sources of uncertainty; specialist consultation, peer support, and patient communication as the main coping strategies; and the significant influence of patient compliance, physicians’ experience, and time pressure on decision-making. High patient load, referral difficulties, and inadequate digital systems were identified as major health system challenges. Physicians consistently emphasized the importance of case-based training and professional development, while also highlighting the role of transparent physician–patient communication in reducing uncertainty. Conclusions: Diagnostic uncertainty is a multifaceted challenge in primary care in Türkiye, influenced by individual, systemic, and patient-related factors. Strengthening case-based educational programs, improving referral processes, and reducing patient load may enhance physicians’ ability to manage uncertainty and improve patient outcomes. Clinical trial number: Not applicable.

Hemoglobin–Albumin–Lymphocyte–Platelet (HALP) score as a low-cost adjunct for osteoporosis risk stratification in primary care

Vatansever, Mehmet; Gürsoy, Ersan; Hayme, Serhat

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the hemoglobin, albumin, lymphocyte, and platelet (HALP) score as an exploratory adjunctive marker associated with reduced bone density, particularly in resource-limited settings. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted between October 2022 and October 2023 at the Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Hospital in Trabzon, Türkiye. This study included 267 patients who had not been previously diagnosed with osteopenia or osteoporosis and had undergone a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan within the previous year. The participants were categorized into the normal, osteopenic, and osteoporotic groups according to their DEXA results. Statistical analysis included receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve assessment, sensitivity and specificity calculations, and multiple logistic regression analysis to evaluate the discriminative performance of the HALP score and its adjusted association with reduced bone density. Results: Patients with reduced bone density (osteopenia or osteoporosis) had substantially lower HALP scores than those with a normal bone density. The area under the curve (AUC) for the HALP score was 0.625, indicating a limited discriminative ability. The HALP score exhibited a sensitivity of 65.36% and a specificity of 55.26% for identifying reduced bone density. In multivariable analysis, higher HALP remained associated with lower odds of osteopenia/osteoporosis after adjustment (OR = 0.757, 95% CI 0.624–0.917, p = 0.004). Conclusion: Given its limited discriminative ability, HALP should not be interpreted as a stand-alone screening test. At most, it may represent a low-cost exploratory adjunctive signal that could help support consideration of confirmatory DEXA in resource-limited settings, pending external validation. Trial registration: Not applicable.

Living with Retinitis Pigmentosa in Türkiye: Diagnosis, Independence, and Access to Care

    Gürsoy, Nurcan; Gürsoy, Ersan

Background: Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a progressive inherited retinal dystrophy that affects daily functioning, psychological well-being, and social participation. Although quantitative research describes disease burden, less is known about how individuals experience progressive vision loss in everyday life and within healthcare and social contexts. Methods: This qualitative study used semi-structured face-to-face interviews with adults diagnosed with RP. Purposive sampling was applied to ensure variation in demographic and clinical characteristics. Interviews were conducted in a tertiary ophthalmology clinic in Erzincan, Türkiye, between June and October 2025. Audio recordings were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s reflexive thematic analysis. Reporting followed the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research (COREQ) checklist. Results: Sixteen participants (P1–P16) were included. Five themes were identified: (1) making sense of the illness and the diagnostic journey; (2) functional loss and the negotiation of independence; (3) psychological adaptation and identity reconstruction; (4) social relationships and social encounters; and (5) interaction with systems and the environment—accessibility and healthcare. Participants described early symptom normalization, delayed diagnostic pathways, and uncertainty persisting after diagnosis. Independence was shaped by safety concerns, environmental barriers, and reliance on support. Psychological adjustment fluctuated between fear of progression and efforts to sustain resilience. Social participation was influenced by support networks, concerns about being a burden, and stigma linked to invisible disability. Conclusions: Living with RP extends beyond visual impairment; building on prior qualitative work, our findings contextualize these experiences in Türkiye, highlighting how accessibility gaps, bureaucratic encounters in public institutions, and cost barriers within healthcare and public services can shape uncertainty, independence, and social participation.

Approach to disasters by medical students in a disaster-affected region: Education and awareness

Gürsoy, Ersan; Gürsoy, Nurcan; Yağız, Mercan; Vatansever, Mehmet

This study aims to investigate the awareness of medical students, who are educated in regions that have experienced significant destruction from disasters such as earthquakes, towards disasters, the roles they can assume during disaster situations, and their attitudes towards disaster medicine. This cross-sectional study was conducted between November 2023 and January 2024 at Erzincan Binali Yıldırım University Faculty of Medicine, involving medical students aged 18 years and older. A structured, 20-item questionnaire was administered to collect demographic information, previous disaster experiences, levels of disaster awareness, and attitudes toward disaster medicine. Descriptive statistics were used for data presentation, and the Chi-square test was applied for categorical comparisons. Statistical significance was set at p<0.05. A total of 172 students participated in the study. Among these participants, 80.2% (n=138) stated that they lacked sufficient knowledge regarding the appropriate actions to take during a disaster, and 30.2% (n=52) reported not having received adequate training in disaster preparedness. Among students with previous natural disaster experience, it was observed that such experiences did not significantly impact their knowledge and attitudes towards disaster management (p=0.434). Students who had received training were observed to have greater confidence in providing medical support during disasters (p=0.006). In conclusion, medical students remain a highly motivated but underprepared group in terms of disaster readiness. It is therefore imperative to strengthen their knowledge and skills in disaster management and intervention. Increasing the emphasis on disaster preparedness within medical education programs can better equip students for future disasters and ultimately enhance the overall resilience of the community.

Assessment of vitamin D and iron supplementation practices and their determinants in Erzincan, Türkiye: A cross-sectional study

Hayme, Serhat; Gürsoy, Ersan; Çakır, Hatice; Eren, Salih; Özdemir, Agah; Karabaş, Bilal

Objective: Vitamin D and iron are crucial micronutrients, particularly for children in phases of rapid growth and development, playing significant roles in bone and dental health, immune function, cognitive development, and energy metabolism. Despite the initiation of prophylaxis programs by the Turkish Ministry of Health, adherence and effectiveness remain variable, highlighting the need for localized research to evaluate these initiatives. This study aims to assess the prevalence and continuity of vitamin D and iron supplementation among families in Erzincan, and identify determinants influencing the sustainability of these practices. Methods: A cross-sectional and descriptive study was conducted among 200 families with children aged 1-5 years in the districts of Erzincan. Participants were recruited from family health centers using a convenience sampling method. Inclusion criteria encompassed families with children who met the age requirement, while exclusion criteria included children with special health conditions requiring high-dose supplementation. Data were collected through structured face-to-face questionnaires assessing supplementation practices, sources of medical advice, parental attitudes, and socio-demographic factors. Descriptive statistics summarized the data. The chi-square test and independent samples t-test assessed categorical and continuous variables, respectively. Multiple logistic regression identified factors influencing adherence, while Kaplan–Meier survival analysis evaluated supplementation duration. Results: High rates of vitamin D (98.5%) and iron (94%) supplementation were observed, albeit with decreased adherence to the recommended durations (82.5% for vitamin D, 75.5% for iron). The absence of parental concern for their children’s health and concurrent use of another type of prophylaxis had a positive effect on prophylaxis use. A pediatrician recommended vitamin D and iron prophylaxis to 33% (n=66) of the participants, a family physician to 49% (n=98), and auxiliary health personnel to 3% (n=6) only, whereas 15% (n=32) were advised by more than one health professional. (p=0.008 for vitamin D prophylaxis; p=0.014 for iron prophylaxis). The multivariable logistic regression analyses revealed that parental concern about their infants’ health significantly impacted the continuity of vitamin D prophylaxis (p=0.010). However, demographic characteristics had no significant impact on supplementation practices. Conclusion: Although vitamin D and iron supplementation rates are high in Erzincan, challenges in sustaining recommended durations suggest areas for improvement in prophylaxis programs. This study underscores the importance of healthcare professional recommendations and parental health perceptions in influencing supplementation practices. Recommendations include enhancing health education and accessibility to prophylaxis programs to improve sustainability and adherence.

Gürsoy, Ersan; Gürsoy, Nurcan; Vatansever, Mehmet; Nas, Mehmet Akif

This study aimed to evaluate family physicians’ knowledge and practices in primary healthcare settings. It focused specifically on their approaches to eye screening, early diagnosis, and management of eye diseases. This descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted among family physicians working in the provinces of Erzincan, Trabzon, and Erzurum. Data were collected between September and December 2024 using a 37-item questionnaire developed through a literature review and pilot testing. The questionnaire, delivered via Google Forms, included Likert-scale items covering demographic information, eye screening practices, and knowledge levels. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test, Kruskal–Wallis test, Mann Whitney U, and Spearman correlation analysis. A total of 124 family physicians participated in the study. While 40.3% reported performing red reflex screening only for infants aged 0–3 months, 29.8% stated they did not perform it at all. Additionally, 21.8% indicated that a direct ophthalmoscope was either unavailable or its availability was unknown at their centers. The mean knowledge score was 58.15, with male physicians scoring significantly higher than female physicians (p=0.023). No significant associations were found between knowledge scores and age, total professional experience, or job title. However, a positive and significant correlation was identified between the duration of family medicine practice and knowledge level (r=0.240, p=0.007). The findings revealed notable deficiencies in the knowledge and practices of family physicians concerning eye health screening and early diagnosis. To enhance the quality of primary eye care, it is essential to implement regular training programs, ensure the availability of ophthalmic examination tools, and establish national screening protocols. This study contributes foundational insights to strengthen the role of family physicians in the early detection and management of eye conditions.

Exploring multifocal IOL experiences: A qualitative study of patient and physician narratives on YouTube

    Gürsoy, Nurcan; Gürsoy, Ersan

This study aims to compare patient- and physician-generated YouTube videos on multifocal lens surgery experiences, examining how online narratives align with or diverge from professional medical perspectives. A cross-sectional qualitative analysis of 48 Turkish-language YouTube videos related to multifocal lens surgeries was conducted. Inclusion criteria required videos to be longer than 1 minute, have at least 1000 views, maintain suitable visual quality, and exclude direct advertising. The final sample included 38 doctor-produced and 10 patient-produced videos. Transcripts totaling 62,707 words underwent thematic analysis, with 2 researchers independently coding the data. Seven themes emerged: patient satisfaction and managing expectations, night vision problems and dysphotopsia, importance of individualized lens selection, technological advances in lenses, postoperative adaptation and management, ethical issues and patient information, and surgical procedure's practical aspects. Both doctors and patients largely agree that proper preoperative counseling and realistic expectations are key to favorable outcomes. Patients generally confirm good vision and comfort but may experience dissatisfaction when initial hopes are unmet or communication is insufficient. Dysphotopsias and adaptation periods are recognized by both groups as common, albeit temporary. Notably, patient videos attracted higher viewer engagement, suggesting that personal narratives resonate strongly with the audience. Online patient narratives both reinforce and, at times, question the information provided by physicians, highlighting the importance of clear communication, personalized intraocular lens choices, and active expectation management throughout the treatment process. management. For primary care physicians and ophthalmologists, integrating these insights can enhance patient education, improve the referral process, and ensure that evolving IOL technologies better meet patient needs and experiences.

    Kılınçer, Mehmet; Gürsoy, Ersan

Background: Air pollution has become a significant global public health concern, with evidence linking it to various adverse health outcomes, including respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. While numerous studies have investigated the effects of these particulate and gaseous pollutants on both healthy individuals and patients, further research is needed to clarify the short-term hematological and pulmonary responses in individuals without underlying health conditions. This study aims to explore the relationship between air quality, hematological parameters, and pulmonary function in a healthy population in Turkey. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 326 healthy, non-smoking adults aged 18–65 years. Air Quality Index (AQI) data for the examination day and the preceding 5 days were collected. Hematological parameters and pulmonary function tests were analyzed. Spearman and Pearson correlation tests were used to compare numerical variables. Group comparisons were conducted using the independent samples t-test and Mann-Whitney U test. Results: The mean AQI on the day of the medical visit was 68.20, indicating moderate air quality. Significant negative correlations were observed between AQI and hematological parameters, including leukocyte (r = -0.111, p = 0.046), lymphocyte (r = -0.134, p = 0.016), and platelet counts (r = -0.141, p = 0.011). Similar negative correlations were found for the 5-day average AQI. For pulmonary parameters, AQI was negatively correlated with FEF50% (r = -0.172, p = 0.002), FEF25% (r = -0.140, p = 0.012), FEV1/FVC% (r = -0.125, p = 0.024), and FEF75% (r = -0.124, p = 0.025). Conclusion: Short-term exposure to moderate air pollution significantly impacts hematological parameters and specific pulmonary function indices, even in healthy individuals. These findings emphasize the importance of continuous air quality monitoring and public health interventions to mitigate the health risks of air pollution.

Turkish men’s experiences of positive SMA carrier results: a qualitative study within a gendered screening framework

    Gürsoy, Ersan; Yeğ, Mert

Background: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) carrier screening has been part of Türkiye’s premarital and prenatal program since 2021, using a stepwise algorithm that first tests men. Little is known about how male carriers interpret a positive result—particularly when their partners test negative—within the country’s sociocultural context. This study qualitatively explored Turkish men’s emotional, cognitive, and interpersonal responses to a positive SMA carrier result to illuminate needs that current screening practices may overlook. Methods: Eleven male participants who had received a positive SMA carrier result while their partners tested negative were recruited through purposive sampling from official health records in Erzincan Province. Data were collected via in-depth, semi-structured interviews conducted by telephone between November and December 2024. Interviews explored emotional responses, information-seeking behaviour, reproductive decision-making, and communication with healthcare professionals. All interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analysed thematically using Braun and Clarke’s six-phase framework, supported by NVivo 12 software. Results: Participants described intense, sometimes overwhelming emotions; widespread confusion stemming from scarce or inconsistent genetic counselling; and a heavy reliance on internet and social-media sources that often intensified fear. Disclosure decisions were shaped by stigma concerns and extended-family expectations, while interactions with healthcare professionals ranged from reassuring to dismissive. Many men postponed or reconsidered childbearing, weighed assisted-reproduction options, and ultimately reported greater awareness of genetic risk—some becoming advocates for broader screening. Across accounts, carrier status was framed not as a purely biomedical label but as a socially embedded responsibility compounded by the gendered design of the screening algorithm. Conclusion: Findings highlight the psychosocial burden placed on male carriers and point to gaps in counselling and follow-up care. Integrating accessible, culturally sensitive, and gender-aware genetic counselling—through tele-genetics, community outreach, and primary-care training—could mitigate distress and support informed reproductive choices. Addressing these needs would strengthen the ethical and practical impact of Türkiye’s SMA screening program and offer guidance for similar initiatives elsewhere.

Perceptions, challenges, and opportunities of qualitative research among inexperienced medical academics

    Gürsoy, Ersan; Vatansever, Mehmet

Background: Although qualitative research is vital to healthcare, it remains underused in medical academia. This study therefore aims to examine in depth the perceptions of medical faculty academics without prior experience in conducting qualitative research, the challenges they face, and the potential contributions of these methods to health research. Methods: The research is based on a descriptive qualitative study conducted with twelve faculty members specialising in various medical disciplines in three different provinces in Türkiye. Participants were selected using a combination of purposive and snowball sampling methods to ensure a diverse and relevant sample. Face-to-face and Zoom interviews were carried out using structured interview techniques, and data collection continued until data saturation was achieved. The interview data were audio-recorded, transcribed, and analysed using the thematic analysis method. The study followed the “Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research” (COREQ) checklist to ensure comprehensive reporting of the qualitative research process. Results: Academics acknowledge the significant value of qualitative research in the field of health; however, they are unable to use these methods effectively due to problems such as a lack of practical experience, limited institutional support, and inadequate training programs.Participants also pointed out that they required targeted mentoring and hands-on training to address these issues. Some participants expressed concerns about the time-intensive nature of qualitative studies, which often conflicts with their existing professional responsibilities. Others emphasised the lack of recognition and incentives for qualitative research within institutional policies, further discouraging engagement. Despite these barriers, several participants also highlighted the complementary nature of qualitative and quantitative methods, particularly in addressing complex health problems. Conclusions: Integrating qualitative methodologies into medical faculties can support a deeper understanding of complex health problems. Our findings highlight the need for enhanced hands-on training and stronger institutional support to enable inexperienced academics to engage more effectively with qualitative research.

Analysis of physicians’ statements on electronic cigarettes in YouTube videos in Türkiye: a thematic content analysis

    Gürsoy, Ersan; Vatansever, Mehmet

Background: Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) have become increasingly popular among both adults and young people seeking to quit smoking and have sparked significant debates regarding their health effects. The current study aims to analyze how physicians’ opinions in Türkiye address public health risks by examining the most-watched electronic cigarette videos on YouTube. Methods: The 16 most-watched YouTube videos in Türkiye featuring physicians discussing e-cigarettes were analyzed using thematic content analysis. The videos were chosen from searches conducted between April 2024 and December 2024 with the keywords “electronic cigarette,” “electronic cigarette use,” “harm of e-cigarettes,” “are e-cigarettes harmful,” “e-cigarette benefits,” “e-cigarette doctor” and “e-cigarette Physician.” Videos over 1 min with physicians as primary speakers and at least 1,000 views were included. The verbal content of physicians’ opinions in the videos was transcribed verbatim, and the analyzed videos were categorized into four main themes and eight sub-themes. Results: The analysis of the videos revealed that physicians emphasized the physical and psychological health risks of e-cigarettes, particularly their detrimental effects on the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. Nicotine addiction was highlighted as a persistent issue, with e-cigarettes perpetuating dependence rather than serving as a smoking cessation tool. Additionally, marketing strategies targeting younger demographics, such as flavored products and appealing advertisements, were identified as a significant factor in shaping misconceptions about the relative safety of e-cigarettes. While some physicians acknowledged a reduction in certain harmful substances compared to traditional cigarettes, the majority emphasized the long-term health effects of e-cigarettes and warned against assuming these products are less harmful. Conclusion: The findings reveal that physicians on YouTube predominantly adopt a cautious approach toward e-cigarettes, emphasizing their health risks and potential to perpetuate nicotine addiction. Marketing strategies targeting younger audiences were identified as a significant factor influencing public perceptions. These insights highlight the importance of health professionals engaging on digital platforms to address misconceptions and promote accurate, evidence-based information about e-cigarettes.

The Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on Patients’ Attitudes Towards Traditional and Complementary Medicine: A Cross-Sectional Study

    Gürsoy, Ersan; Karabaş, Bilal

Objective: Our study aims to examine whether patients’ perspectives on traditional and complementary medicine (T&CM) are affected by the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Material and Methods: Our study is cross-sectional descriptive. The population consists of patients aged 18 years and older who applied to the family medicine outpatient clinic of a university hospital between January 2022 and June 2022. Healthcare workers were excluded from the study to avoid medical bias. A sociodemographic questionnaire consisting of 18 items and a T&CM Attitude Scale consisting of 27 items prepared by McFadden et al. were administered to the participants. A pilot study was conducted with 38 people. According to the pilot study results, the sample calculation was made, and the study was carried out with 450 people. Results: Post-COVID-19 scores were significantly higher in the T&CM Attitude Scale total score and in the sub-dimensions of “view of traditional medicine”, “dissatisfaction with modern medicine”, and “holistic view of health” (p<0.001). The increase in the total score on the T&CM Attitude Scale was more evident in those who had used any T&CM method before, in those whose family members had used the T&CM method, and in those who found T&CM methods useful (all p<0.001). There was no significant difference in the total score between those with COVID-19 infection and those without (p=0.215). Conclusion: The view for T&CM was found to increase positively after the COVID-19 pandemic, and this positive outlook was independent of being infected with COVID-19.

Material and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in three family health centers in the central district of Erzincan from June to September 2023. A researcher -designed 15 -item instrument was utilized to collect demographic data and assess knowledge and attitudes regarding SMA among participants. Results: The study was participated in by 197 individuals, with an average age determined to be 29.45 +/- 7.48. The proportion of those supporting the implementation of SMA screening was 84.8% (n=167), while the intention to undergo the test was identified at 72.6% (n=143). A significant relationship was found between the willingness to be tested and variables such as the level of education, the absence of disabled close relatives, not considering SMA to be genetically inherited, finding screenings appropriate, the perceived impact of test results on marriage, and the belief that screening could not be conducted after marriage. Conclusion: While most recognized SMA's severity, there's a notable deficit in understanding its preventability, suggesting the need for targeted educational interventions to enhance genetic screening uptake.

Exploring the Experiences, Perceptions and Social Dynamics of Electronic Cigarette Users: A Qualitative Study

    Gürsoy, Ersan; Kaya, Rıdvan

Introduction: Electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, are rapidly gaining popularity throughout the globe as safer alternatives to traditional cigarette smoking. There are significant public health concerns due to the uncertainty of long-term health consequences. This study aims to examine the experiences, attitudes and social dynamics of e-cigarette users to provide guidance for public health policies and interventions. Methods: In this qualitative descriptive study, semi-structured interviews were conducted. Fifteen e-cigarette users were recruited using a snowball sampling strategy, where initial participants referred other suitable users. All participants had at least 6 months of regular e-cigarette use. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews with open-ended questions. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and reviewed by the researchers. This review identified four main themes and eight sub-themes. Results: The four main themes identified as a result of the analysis are as follows: (1) initiation and usage experiences; (2) perceptions of health effects; (3) social and environmental factors and (4) addiction and future plans. Participants primarily began using e-cigarettes out of curiosity, due to the appealing fragrance and the belief that they were less harmful than traditional cigarettes. Usage patterns varied among participants, with some reporting minimal cravings in the early morning hours. Opinions on the long-term health effects of e-cigarettes were diverse, with many participants acknowledging uncertainty. Peers and family members perceived e-cigarettes as more socially acceptable than traditional smoking, resulting in fewer negative reactions. Finally, participants' levels of addiction and intentions to quit varied, with some expressing a desire to reduce or cease usage due to health concerns. Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate that the adoption of e-cigarettes is influenced by a confluence of factors, including curiosity, the perception of reduced damage in comparison to conventional cigarettes and social acceptance. Notwithstanding these claimed advantages, users have a diverse array of beliefs and understandings concerning the enduring health consequences of e-cigarettes. The presence of varying levels of addiction and the corresponding aspirations to cease the behaviour highlight the necessity for focused public health interventions. Patient or Public Contribution: E-cigarette users were actively involved in this study, providing essential insights and feedback throughout. Their first-hand experiences shaped the interview guide and contributed to the identification of key themes. Participants also reviewed and confirmed the accuracy of the interview transcripts, ensuring the reliability of the data.

Evaluation of Quality of Paper Reporting Online and Face-to-Face Family Medicine Congresses: A Cross-Sectional Study

    Gürsoy, Ersan; Yağız, Mercan

Objective: Our study aimed to evaluate the paper reporting quality of the 18th National Family Medicine Congress, which was held face-to-face before the COVID-19 pandemic, and the 19th National Family Medicine Congress, which was the first online congress during the pandemic, according to the STROBE criteria. Methods: Our study is cross-sectional analytical. Oral and poster abstracts accepted and included in the congress abstract book were included in the study. A total of 266 abstracts were reviewed. STROBE score was created out of 11 points in total by giving a "1" point if the abstract included the feature in each item and a "0" if it did not. The STROBE scores were compared by evaluating the abstracts separately by two different reviewers. Descriptive statistics, Chi-square test, Student's t-test, Pearson correlation, and Mann-Whitney U test were used. The statistical significance level was taken as p<0.05. Results: Although the rate of verbal presentations was higher in the online congress, there was no significant difference between the congresses regarding the types of papers. In 93.2% of the papers, sampling was not done, or it was not stated that it was done. All of the 18 papers stated to be sample calculations were verbal. When all papers were included, the mean STROBE scores of verbal papers were statistically significantly higher than the scores of poster papers in both reviewers. When the presentation scores according to the congresses were examined, no significant difference was found between the 18th and 19th National Family Medicine Congresses in the same groups. Conclusion: The online congress format did not affect the reporting quality of the papers. Both congresses have good reporting quality but have the potential for improvement.

The effect of different therapeutic treatments on the frequency of postoperative hypocalcemia in patients with thyroidectomy; [Tiroidektomi olan hastalarda farklı terapötik tedavilerin postoperatif hipokalsemi sıklığına etkisi]

Piyade, Hamdi Burak; Başoğlu, Mahmut; Gürsoy, Ersan

Objective: Thyroid gland surgery and its surgical complications are situations that a surgeon frequently encounters in his daily practice. In our study, it was aimed to examine the effect of different treatment methods given to patients who underwent thyroidectomy on hypocalcemia. Material and Methods: Three hundred and seventy-one patients who underwent thyroidectomy at Ondokuz Mayıs University Medical Faculty General Surgery clinic between December 2016 and January 2021 were retrospectively included in the study. Parameters such as surgery indications, fine needle aspiration biopsy results, preoperative serum calcium values, type of surgery, serum calcium values at postoperative 1st day and 1st month, postoperative hospital stay, drugs prescribed at discharge, histopathological diagnosis of the patient, and whether there was incidental parathyroidectomy or not were included. Results: Mean age of 371 patients who underwent thyroidectomy was 49 (19-82) years. Total thyroidectomy was the most common type of thyroidectomy with 61% (n= 225) of the patients. There was a significant decrease in pre-op and post-op calcium values in all three types of surgery performed on the patients, and there was no significant difference between the different types of surgery. Post-operative day one and month one serum calcium values were significantly increased in all groups (p= .000). The increase in post-op serum calcium level was most common in the group using calcium carbonate + cholecalciferol + calcitriol. Conclusion: The use of post-op calcitriol in patients undergoing thyroidectomy seems to be quite effective in preventing the development of hypocalcemia.
