- MakaleYalnız künye2018Evaluation of Selected Pharmaceuticals on Plant Stress Markers in Wheat
Osma, Etem; Cigir, Yavuz; Karnjanapiboonwong, Adcharee; Anderson, Todd A.
Herein we report on the interactions between two common pharmaceuticals and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) plants. Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) enter wastewater treatment plants from industrial and household sewers. These chemicals are not completely removed during wastewater processing, and in many countries, are being found in drinking water sources and in surface waters downstream of wastewater treatment plants. If treated wastewater effluent is re-used to irrigate crops, the potential adverse interactions between PPCPs and plants needs to be understood. β-estradiol and gemfibrozil appeared to affect wheat seedlings through oxidative stress, as indicated by increases in lipid peroxidation, hydrogen peroxide, carotenoid, and antioxidant enzyme activities. Additionally, plant cell damage in wheat seedlings was indicated by an increase in electrolyte leakage. Although our study was not designed to elucidate possible mechanisms, the changes in activity of plant enzymes in response to some pharmaceuticals is likely the consequence of oxidative stress and the initiation of pathways to protect the plant from further cell damage.

Mertoğlu, Cuma; Gunay, Murat; Siranli, Gulsah; Kulhan, Mehmet; Gok, Gamze; Erel, Özcan
Aim: A 50 g glucose challenge test (GCT) is recommended for screening all pregnant women for gestational diabetes mellitus. In this study, the effect of GCT on the thiol/disulfide balance was investigated. Methods: One-hundred women that underwent a 50 g GCT at 24–28 weeks of gestation (63 positive and 37 negative results) were evaluated in terms of thiol/disulfide in serum samples at test hours 0 and 1. Results: Compared to the baseline values (hour 0), after the glucose load (hour 1), the thiol and native thiol/total thiol (p < 0.0001) of the GCT-positive women were reduced whereas the values of glucose, disulfide, disulfide/native thiol, disulfide/total thiol (p < 0.0001) and total thiol increased (p = 0.018). Conclusion: In GCT-positive pregnant individuals, the glucose load increases oxidative stress by changing the thiol/disulfide homeostasis. Such an effect is not observed in healthy pregnancies.

Karakaya, Songül; Gözcü, Sefa; Güvenalp, Zühal; Özbek, Hilal; Yuca, Hafize; Dursunoğlu, Benan; Kazaz, Cavit; Kılıç, Ceyda Sibel
Context: Ferulago (Apiaceae) species have been used since ancient times for the treatment of intestinal worms, hemorrhoids, and as a tonic, digestive, aphrodisiac, or sedative, as well as in salads or as a spice due to their special odors. Objectives: This study reports the α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory activities of dichloromethane extract and bioactive compounds isolated from Ferulago bracteata Boiss. & Hausskn. roots. Materials and methods: The isolated compounds obtained from dichloromethane extract of Ferulago bracteata roots through bioassay-guided fractionation and isolation process were evaluated for their in vitro α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory activities at 5000-400 µg/mL concentrations. Compound structures were elucidated by detailed analyses (NMR and MS). Results: A new coumarin, peucedanol-2′-benzoate (1), along with nine known ones, osthole (2), imperatorin (3), bergapten (4), prantschimgin (5), grandivitinol (6), suberosin (7), xanthotoxin (8), felamidin (9), umbelliferone (10), and a sterol mixture consisted of stigmasterol (11), β-sitosterol (12) was isolated from the roots of F. bracteata. Felamidin and suberosin showed significant α-glucosidase inhibitory activity (IC50 0.42 and 0.89 mg/mL, respectively) when compared to the reference standard acarbose (IC50 4.95 mg/mL). However, none of the tested extracts were found to be active on α-amylase inhibition. Discussion and conclusions: The present study demonstrated that among the compounds isolated from CH2Cl2 fraction of F. bracteata roots, coumarins were determined as the main chemical constituents of this fraction. This is the first report on isolation and characterization of the bioactive compounds from root extracts of F. bracteata and on their α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory activities.

Isik, Arda; Firat, Deniz; Yilmaz, Ismayil; Peker, Kemal; Idiz, Oguz; Yilmaz, Bahri; Demiryilmaz, Ismail; Celebi, Fehmi
Introduction: Thyroid nodules are commonly seen. Our aim is to learn the behaviors and operational attitudes of surgeons approaching the thyroid nodules. In a literature search, our study is the first and only study performed merely on surgeons. Materials- Metods: This cross-sectional study was done between June 2014–January 2015. The questionnaire consists of 25 questions. Initially, general questions consisting of demographic findings were asked. In step 2, questions consisting of the index case and case variants were asked. Results were compared with American Thyroid Association, European Thyroid Association guidelines, and Australia survey results. In the last step, questions about thyroid operations were asked. Results: A total of 301 surgeons responded to the survey. The response rate was approximately 20%. Thirty nine were female and 262 were male. For the question that asks the diameter of the thyroid nodule that will require a thyroid fine needle aspiration biopsy (TFNAB), 47.5% of the surgeons will require a TFNAB for 1–2 cm solid nodules. 40.15% of the surgeons required a TFNAB regardless of size. 46.1% of the surgeons who required a TFNAB between 1 and 2 cm solid nodules also required scintigraphy at diagnosis of suppressed TSH case variant. Conclusion: In this survey, we identified differences from up-to-date guidelines about approaching thyroid nodules and perioperative thyroid surgery. From our perspective, surgeons need updated training requirements. This can be done with updated seminars across the country. Thereby approaches may become standard and consequently patients may have qualified services.

Objective: Melatonin is a hormone secreted from the pineal gland and has anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory effects. Oxidative stress is considered as an important factor in the etiology of erectile dysfunction (ED), and in many experimental models, positive results have been obtained with melatonin treatment. This study aimed to measure serum melatonin levels in ED patients and to investigate the possible relationship between ED and melatonin levels. Materials and Methods: Sixty-two patients diagnosed with mild, moderate or severe ED according to the five-item International Erectile Function Index (IIEF-5) and 22 healthy individuals were included in the study. The serum melatonin levels, anthropometric data, and other biochemical and hormonal parameters of all the subjects were recorded. Detailed anamnesis was also obtained in terms of diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, smoking status, and alcohol use. Results: The serum melatonin level was found 34.2±13.3 ng/dL in the mild ED group, 33.3±14.7 ng/dL in the moderate ED group, 34.8±17.2 ng/dL in the severe ED group, and 44.6±16.5 ng/dL in the control group. The serum melatonin levels were significantly lower in all ED groups compared to the control group (p=0.019). There was no significant difference in the serum melatonin levels between the three ED groups. Diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, smoking and alcohol use were not significantly different between the ED groups (p>0.05). Conclusion: We consider that if our findings are supported by further studies with larger populations, the measurement of the serum melatonin level may have a future role in the diagnosis and treatment of ED.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2018The ameliorative effect of lutein on ovarian ischemiareperfusion injury in rats
Turkler, C.; Kulhan, N.G.; Ata, N.; Kiremitli, T.; Cimen, F. Keskin; Suleyman, H.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of our study is to investigate biochemical and histopathological effects of lutein on the ovarian ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury in rats. BACKGROUND: Reactive oxygen species and cytokines have a very important role in the pathogenesis of I/R injury. Lutein and its derivatives may show an anti-infl ammatory effect in relation to the decrease in infl ammatory cytokines and increase in antioxidant enzymes. METHODS: Wistar albino female rats were randomly divided into three groups before surgery as follows: I/R group (IRG; n = 6), 1 mg/kg lutein + I/R group (LIRG; n = 6), and a healthy control group scheduled for a sham operation (SG; n = 6). The condition of ovarian ischemia was created by vascular clips. After two hours, the ovary was reperfused. Then, cyclooxygenase-1, cyclooxygenase-2, malondialdehyde and total glutathione levels were examined in ovary tissues of rats. RESULTS: As the results of our study demonstrated, in ovarian tissues of animals after I/R, there was an increase in the levels of malondialdehyde and cyclooxygenase-2, while total glutathione and cyclooxygenase-1 were decreased. At the same time, it has been observed however that these ratios are reversed in the LIRG group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Lutein ameliorates the I/R-induced ovarian injury in rats by its antioxidative and anti-infl ammatory activities (Fig. 2, Ref. 39). Text in PDF www.elis.sk.
- MakaleYalnız künye2018Episodic migraine and white matter hyperintensities: Association of pain lateralization
Yalcin, Ahmet; Ceylan, Mustafa; Bayraktutan, Omer Faruk; Akkurt, Adem
Background. Migraine pathophysiology involves a neuronal mechanism that is closely associated with the neuronal activation of peripheral trigeminal nociceptive pathways. It also involves a vascular mechanism that is supported by studies concerning the presence of migraine with aura in various vascular diseases. Migraine is associated with silent infarct-like lesions and white matter hyperintensities (WMHs) that can be encountered during magnetic resonance imaging. In this study, we aimed to demonstrate the migraine-WMH link based on pain lateralization. Methods. We recruited 628 episodic migraine patients and examined their cranial magnetic resonance images regarding the presence of deep, subcortical, and periventricular WMHs. We sought to identify an association between lesion occurrence and pain side. Results. We found that the patients had more deep/ subcortical hyperintensities in the cerebral hemisphere that was ipsilateral to the pain side (ĸ = 0.421). Periventricular hyperintensities were not associated with the pain side (P = 0.768). Conclusions. Based on our study results, we concluded that pain in episodic migraine is associated with the occurrence of WMHs in the cerebral hemispheres.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2018Does extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy therapy affect thiol-disulfide homeostasis?
Bozkurt, Aliseydi; Mertoglu, Cuma; Karabakan, Mehmet; Siranli, Gulsah; Yurt, Emine Feyza; Erel, Ozcan
Objective: Extracorporeal Shockwave Lithotripsy (ESWL) is a non-invasive method that is effective at crushing stones in the upper urinary tract. Disturbance of the thiol/disulfide homeostasis, in favor of the disulfide, has been shown to be involved in the disease pathogenesis. Methods: A total of 36 individuals that underwent ESWL had blood samples collected before ESWL (0hrs), 6hrs, and one week after the ESWL. Sera native and total as wells as disulfide amount was measured using an automated method sodium borohydrate (NaBH4) reduction. In addition, Ischemia Modified Albumin (IMA) levels were measured using colorimetric assay method. Results: Native thiol level was reduced at the 6th hour following ESWL compared to baseline. While the ratios of disulfide level, Disulfide/Total Thiol (DTT), Disulfide/Native Thiol (DNT) and IMA level were increased at the 6th hour following ESWL compared to baseline, they were found to be similar with their baseline values at the end of 1st week. Total thiol and native/total thiol did not show any significant change. Conclusions: ESWL treatment disrupts thiol/disulfide homeostasis and the structure of albumin at the acute term. Therefore, it increases protein oxidation and leads to increased oxidative stress. However, this state is transient and returns to normal within the proceeding days.

Yildirim, Nilgün; Aldemir, Mehmet Naci
OBJECTIVE To analyze the clinical and histopathological characteristics and treatment outcomes of patients treated and followed up for mucinous breast cancer (MBC). METHODS We retrospectively analyzed the clinical and histopathological characteristics and treatment outcomes of 22 patients who were diagnosed with and treated for MBC at our center between 2004 and 2016. RESULTS The mean age was 50 (range: 26–68) years. Ten (47.6%) patients were premenopausal. The tumor was in the right side in 11 patients (50%), and 64% of the patients had early-stage disease. There were six patients with the mixed subtype and 16 with the pure subtype. Except for the two patients with metastatic disease, all patients underwent surgery. Axillary lymph node involvement was detected in seven (36%) patients, and the proportion of patients with the pure subtype was 18%. The average duration of follow-up was 59 months, during which, four patients had recurrent disease. At 5 years, 81% of the patients were alive. The 5-year overall survival rate with pure MBC was 93%. CONCLUSION MBC is a rare condition and carries a good prognosis. Pure MBC has low axillary lymph node metastasis and a higher survival rate.
- MakaleYalnız künye2018Could endocan, a marker of inflammation and endothelial dysfunction, be a new diagnostic marker for fibromyalgia?
Mertoglu, Cuma; Gunay, Murat; Yerligok, Onur
Background: Although the pathophysiology of fibromyalgia has not yet been fully clarified, inflammation and endothelial dysfunction have been suggested to occur in patients with fibromyalgia. In recent years, endocan has been reported as an important biomarker for inflammation and endothelial dysfunction. In this study, we investigated this mechanism by measuring the serum endocan levels in fibromyalgia patients. Methods: The serum samples collected from 37 female patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia for the first time and 43 healthy women were analysed in terms of the endocan levels and laboratory parameters, and the values from the two groups were compared. Results: In the patient group, the serum endocan level was found to be higher (p < 0.0001). Endocan had a significantly high sensitivity and specificity for the diagnosis of fibromyalgia (area under curve: 0.897, cutoff value: 9.81 ng/mL, sensitivity: 88.5%, specificity: 89.7%). Conclusions: Subclinical inflammation and endothelial dysfunction are important in the pathophysiology of fibromyalgia. Increased endocan not only elucidates this mechanism but also presents as an important potential marker for fibromyalgia.

AIM: To determine the effects of Rutin on methanol induced optic neuropathy and compare the results with the effects of ethanol. METHODS: Totally 30 rats were divided into 5 groups, with 6 rats in each group as follows: healthy controls (C), methotrexate (MTX), methotrexate+methanol (MTM), methotrexate+methanol+ethanol (MTME) and methotrexate+ methanol+Rutin (MTMR). In all rabbits except those of the control group, MTX, diluted in sterile serum physiologic, 0.3 mg/kg per oral was applied for 7d by the aid of a tube. After this procedure to the rats of MTM, MTME and MTMR groups, 20% methanol with a dose of 3 g/kg per oral was given by the aid of a tube. In MTME group, 4h after the application of methanol, 20% ethanol was applied by the same way with a dose of 0.5 g/kg. On the other hand, in MTMR group 4h after the application of methanol, Rutin, which was dissolved in distilled water, was applied by the same way with a dose of 50 mg/kg. RESULTS: There were statistically significant differences in tissue 8-hydroxy-2 deoxyguanine (8-OHdG), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), malondialdehyde (MDA), myeloperoxidase (MPO). glutathione peroxidase (tGSH) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels between groups (P<0.001). In MTMR group tissue 8-OHdG, IL-1β, MDA, and MPO levels were similar with the healthy controls but significantly different than the other groups. In histopathological evaluations, in MTX group there was moderate focal destruction, hemorrhage and decrease in number of astrocytes and oligodendrocytes; in MTM group there was severe destruction and edema with decrease in number of astrocytes and oligodendrocytes; in MTME group there was mild hemorrhage, mild edema, mildly dilated blood vessels with congestion while in MTMR group, optic nerve tissue was resembling the healthy controls. CONCLUSION: Rutin may prevent methanol-induced optic neuropathy via anti-inflammatory effects and decreasing the oxidative stress. New treatment options are warranted in this disease to avoid loss of vision in patients.

Aim of the study: Fallopian tube cancer is very rare in the literature and so there are not enough data about the therapeutic approaches. The approaches are generally determined in accordance with the data obtained from ovarian cancer. Many prognostic factors have been investigated in an effort to better estimate patient outcome. Stage, age, and residual tumor after surgery are consistently important prognostic factors. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the prognostic factors and survival rates of primary fallopian tube cancer (PFTC), which is rare among gynecological cancers. Material and methods: Thirty-eight patients with a diagnosis of PFTC were identified through the gynecologic oncology service database of our Research and Training Hospital in the period 1995-2013. Clinicopathological and surgical data were collected. All patients were evaluated for survival and disease-free survival between the dates specified. Results: A significant relationship and correlation was found between optimal surgery and life expectancy. Better results were obtained in patients treated with optimal surgery. The survival probability was found to be higher in patients with lower CA-125 levels and serous histologic type adenocarcinoma. Conclusions: Stage is one of the factors affecting the survival probability. We determined that the pathological type of tumor, the diameter of residual tumor remaining after surgery, tumor grade, preoperative CA-125 levels and presence of ascites affect the survival probability.

Background/aim: This study aimed to compare radiological and functional outcomes of patients who had single-bundle anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction with autologous hamstring tendon grafts using transtibial (TT) versus anteromedial (AM) femoral tunnel drilling techniques. Materials and methods: Sixty patients who had been operated on between 2010 and 2013 were enrolled in this study. Tunnel positions and widenings in the femur and tibia were evaluated with radiographs, arthrometric measurements with a Rolimeter arthrometer (Aircast, Summit, NJ, USA), stability assessment with Lachman and reverse pivot shift tests, and functional assessment with the International Knee Documentation Committee and Tegner and Lysholm scoring systems. Results: Tunnel enlargement in the sagittal and coronal planes of the femur was higher with the TT technique (P < 0.0001) and that of the coronal planes of the tibia was also higher with the TT technique (P = 0.01). During the assessment with the Rolimeter, the difference between sides was significant with the TT technique (P = 0.013). Positive results of the Lachman and reverse pivot shift tests were more frequent with the TT technique (P < 0.05), and the Lysholm scores were higher with the AM technique (P = 0.001). Conclusion: ACL reconstruction with hamstring autografts by either TT or AM technique demonstrated similar and excellent results in terms of functional outcomes at the end of the first postoperative year. The TT group had increased tunnel enlargement, which may have uncertain long-term outcomes, compared with the AM group.

Bisphenol-A (BPA) is one of the most abundantly produced chemicals globally. Concerns have been raised about BPA's possible role in the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). The main aim of the current study was to evaluate the possible association between BPA exposure and T1DM. The second aim was to investigate children's possible BPA exposure routes in Turkey. A total of 100 children aged between 5 and 18 years including 50 children with T1DM and 50 healthy children were included. Urinary BPA levels of all children were measured using high-performance liquid chromatography. Mothers of children enrolled in the study were also requested to complete a survey that included questions on the sociodemographic characteristics, medical history and possible BPA exposure routes of their children. In the T1DM group, urinary BPA levels were slightly higher compared to the control group, but this difference was not significant (p=0.510). However, there was an inverse relationship between current urinary BPA levels and birth weight. It was found that the use of plastic kettles and the consumption of dairy products in plastic boxes significantly increased the urinary BPA concentrations in all subjects. Although there was no significant association between urinary BPA levels and T1DM, we found an inverse relationship between current urinary BPA levels and birth weight. This finding might be important for prenatal exposure, and further prospective research must be conducted. Also, the use of plastic kettles, which has not been mentioned much in the literature before, was found to be an important exposure route for BPA.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2018Do subscapularis tears really result in superior humeral migration?

Objectives: The aim of this study was to analyse the effect of subscapularis tear on superior humeral excursion (SHE) and acromiohumeral distance (AHD). The hypothesis was that subscapularis tears do not result in superior humeral excursion. Methods: Patients who underwent shoulder arthroscopy between August of 2011 and 2015 were reevaluated. Those with isolated Bankart lesion were used as control group and included in the Group 1, isolated full-thickness supraspinatus tear in the Group 2, isolated subscapularis tear in the Group 3, and combined subscapularis and supraspinatus tear in the Group 4. The mean SHE and AHD measurements on magnetic resonance imaging of these groups were compared to reveal any difference in superior humeral migration (SHM). Results: There were 30 patients in each group. The mean age of Group 1 (26.44 ± 8.34) was younger than the other 3 groups. The mean AHD and SHE were higher in Group 1 and 3 (Mean AHD: 12.89 ± 2.24 and 12.28 ± 1.9, respectively. Mean SHE: −3.2 ± 0.99 and −2.78 ± 0.64, respectively) than Group 2 and 4 (Mean AHD: 6.2 ± 1.78 and 6.16 ± 1.52, respectively. Mean SHE: 0.72 ± 0.65 and 1.24 ± 0.63, respectively). The AHD and SHE were strongly correlated with each other (Pearson correlation coefficient = 0.184). The inter-observer and intra-observer correlation of the measurements of SHE on MRI were excellent with intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.95 and 0.94, respectively. Conclusion: Subscapularis tears do not lead to SHM and subacromial impingement. However, superior rotator cuff tears can still lead to SHM and subacromial impingement even when subscapularis tendon is intact. Level of evidence: Level III, diagnostic study.
- Derleme MakaleAçık Erişim2018Eighteen years’ retrospective review of colorectal cancer cases in Eastern population
Topdaği, Ömer; Timuroglu, Aysu
Objective: We aimed to determine the demographic characteristics of colorectal cases and changes in cancer localization according to years in our region. Materials and Methods: In the present study, 752 patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer between January 1992 and December 2010 were included. Results: Of all the patients, 427 (56.8%) were males and 325 (43.2%) were females, with a male/female ratio of 1.3/1. The mean age was 56.2±14.9 years. The most commonly encountered complaint at the first application was rectal bleeding (38.4%). The most commonly encountered tumor localizations were in the rectum (55%) and sigmoid colon (18%). In general, tumors were observed to be localized in the right colon at 16.1% and in the left colon at 83.9%. When tumor localizations were compared in the first 10 years of the study with the second 10 years in the present study, it was observed that tumor numbers in the right colon were increased. Cases in our study were diagnosed as Stage IV according to the tumor, node, metastasis (TNM) classification, and liver metastasis was encountered most commonly. Conclusion: Although colorectal cancer cases have been most commonly encountered in the rectum, it has been recently determined that right colon tumor percentages were increased. It was defined that they were generally diagnosed at later stages. Therefore, colorectal cancer incidence may be decreased by the widespread use of endoscopic techniques in the determination of precancerous lesions.

Background and Objective: Cisplatin is an antineoplastic, platinum derivative used in the treatment of various cancers. Mucositis is a notable side effect of cisplatin treatment. Rutin (vitamin P1) is a drug with antioxidant, anticancer, antidiabetic and antimicrobial properties. The aim of this study was to biochemically, histopathologically and immunohistochemically investigate the effect of rutin on cisplatin-induced mucositis of the small intestine (jejunum) in rats. Materials and Methods: Twenty four rats were divided into four groups with six animals in each group: healthy group (HG), cisplatin-only group (CCG), 50 mg kg-1 of rutin plus cisplatin group (RG-50) and 100 mg kg-1 of rutin plus cisplatin group (RG-100). Rutin or distilled water were administered via an oral gavage. One hour after the administration of rutin or distilled water, the CCG, RG-50 and RG-100 were intraperitoneally injected with 5 mg kg-1 of cisplatin once every 2 for 8 days. At the end of this period, all the animals were sacrificed using a high-dose anesthetic and their small intestines (jejunum) were removed for biochemical and histopathological procedures. Differences between the groups were analyzed using a one-way analysis of variance, followed by Dunnett’s multiple comparisons test. Results: The levels of oxidants increased in all the cisplatin-treated groups, whereas those of antioxidants decreased. Rutin administered at a dose of 100 but not 50 mg kg-1 reduced oxidant levels and increased antioxidant levels to those of healthy tissues. Histopathologically, tissue damage was observed in jejunal tissue of the rats administered only cisplatin, whereas treatment with 100 mg kg-1of rutin prevented cisplatin-induced histopathological damage. In the group administered 50 mg kg-1of rutin, jejunal tissue showed a near-normal appearance, except for mildly dilated congested blood vessels. As shown immunohistochemically, rutin prevented cisplatin-induced jejunal damage more effectively when administered at a dose of 100 mg kg-1 than 50 mg kg-1. Conclusion: Rutin may be useful in the prevention of cisplatin-induced jejunal mucositis.

Present study aims to develop a new type of probiotic yogurt with ginger and chamomile essential oils (EOs) at therapeutic levels (0.2 and 0.4%) by evaluating its some physical, chemical, microbiological and sensory characteristics. Probiotic types of yogurt samples and those with 0.4% ginger EO gave the largest counts of viable probiotic bacteria in the rates of 8.32 cfu/g and 8.01 cfu/g, respectively. It gave larger syneresis rate (8.64 mL/25 g) on the first day than the rest of the samples while C1 (only probiotic strain with direct vat set starter culture) sample represented the lowest rate (5.9 mL/25 g) on day 21. Among the samples with various contents, C2 (inoculated probiotic strain with 0.2% essential oil ginger) and C3 (inoculated probiotic strain with 0.4% essential oil ginger) were found to be organoleptically the most acceptable with close scores to that of control. Practical applications: Antibacterial and antioxidant activities of essential oils have received considerable attention in food preservation. During bio-yogurt storage, the edible film incorporating ginger and chamomile essential oils showed reducing effect on the microbial growth and extended the shelf-life of samples.
