Background: The primary objective of this multicentre prospective observational study was to evaluate the early results of a new non-thermal embolisation method using N-butyl cyanoacrylate in venous insuffi ciency. Patients and methods: A total of 181 patients with a varicose vein diagnosis were treated with the VariClose: Vein Sealing Systems at four different centres. The protocol included physical and colour Doppler ultrasonography examination, venous clinical severity score and quality of life assessment before and after the procedure on days 1 and 7 and at months 1, 3 and 6. Clinical recovery was evaluated by comparing the venous clinical severity score and the quality of life assessment before and after the procedure. Results: In total, 215 embolisation procedures were successfully completed on 181 patients (110 female) with a mean age of 37.6 ± 13.2 years (range 18 - 72 years). The 215 procedures consisted of 25 bilateral applications on 206 great saphenous veins and 9 small saphenous veins. The average pre-interventional diameter of great saphenous veins was 6.5 ± 1.4 mm (4.3 - 14 mm), and the mean diameter of small saphenous veins was 5.2 ± 1.3 mm (3.8 - 8.6 mm). The average length of the sealed vein segments was 31.6 ± 6.1 cm (23 - 70 cm), and the average N-butyl cyanoacrylate usage for the patient was 0.9 ml (0.7 - 2.1 ml). The procedural occlusion rate was 100 %. Post-operative pain was observed in 11 patients (6.1 %), and thrombophlebitis was observed in 1 patient (0.5 %). No total recanalisation was observed. Five (2.7 %) partial recanalisations were observed at the 6 month follow-up. The 6 month total occlusion rate was 97.2 %. Conclusions: This new tumescent-free non-thermal embolisation method can be applied safely with high success rates.

This study obtained information on the serotypes and molecular typing characteristics of Streptococcus pneumoniae strains causing invasive diseases in Turkey. Sixty-eight S. pneumoniae isolates causing invasive pneumococcal diseases were collected from different regions of Turkey from 2009 to 2011. The isolates were characterized by performing multilocus sequence typing (MLST), pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), and capsular serotyping, and 25 different serotypes were identified. Serotypes 19F, 23F, 1, 14, and 7F were common and accounted for 52.9z of all the serotypes. In addition, 54 different PFGE profiles (pulsotypes) were observed. Twenty-three of the 68 (33.8z) isolates were clustered into 9 pulsotypes. MLST analysis yielded 36 sequence types, of which 12 (33.3z) were novel. A comparison of results with the global pneumococcal MLST database by performing eBURST analysis showed that our strains belonged to 20 different clonal complexes and 5 singletons. In addition, we identified 4 new alleles: 2 gdh, 1 xpt, and 1 ddl. Thus, the results of this study highlighted a high level of diversity among pneumococcal isolates. In addition, the study identified a case of possible capsular switching.

PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP) against desflurane induced hepatotoxicity. METHODS: Thirty experimental animals were divided into groups as healthy (HG), desflurane control (DCG), TPP and desflurane group (TDG). 20 mg/kg TPP was injected to intraperitoneally TDG. After one hour of TPP administration, desflurane was applied for two hours. After 24 hours, liver tissues of the animals killed with decapitation were removed. The oxidant/antioxidant levels and ALT, AST and LDH activities were measured. The histopathological examinations were performed in the liver tissues for all rats. RESULTS: Notwithstanding the levels of oxidants and liver enzymes were significantly increased (p<0.0001), antioxidant levels were significantly decreased in DCG (p<0.0001). On contrary to the antioxidant parameters were increased (p<0.05) the oxidant parameters and liver enzymes were decreased in TDG (p<0.0001). Whereas multiple prominent, congestion, hemorrhage and dilatation were observed in sinusoids and lymphocyte-rich inflammation results in the centrilobular and portal areas of liver tissue in DCG, these findings were observed less frequently in TDG. CONCLUSİON: Thiamine pyrophosphate prevented liver oxidative damage induced with desflurane and may be useful in prophylaxis of desflurane induced hepatotoxicity.

Does previous hip surgery effect the outcome of tönnis triple periacetabular osteotomy? mid-term results

Konya, Mehmet Nuri; Aydín, Bahattin Kerem; Yíldírím, Timur; Sofu, Hakan; Gürsu, Sarper

Hip dysplasia (HD) is 1 of the major reasons of coxarthrosis. The goal of the treatment of HD by Tönnis triple pelvic osteotomy (TPAO) is to improve the function of hip joint while relieving pain, delaying and possibly preventing end-stage arthritis. The aim of this study is to compare the clinical and radiological results of TPAO to determine if previous surgery has a negative effect on TPAO. Patients operated with TPAO between 2005 and 2010, included in this study. Patients divided into 2 groups: primary acetabular dysplasia (PAD) and residual acetabular dysplasia (RAD). Prepostoperatively, hip range of motion, Harris hip score (HHS), Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) hip score, visual analog scores (VAS), impingement tests, and also the presence of Trendelenburg sign (TS) were investigated for clinical evaluation. For radiological analysis pre-postoperative, anterior-posterior (AP) pelvis and faux profile radiographs were used. Acetabular index, lateral center edge (LCE) angle, and Sharp angles were measured by AP pelvis anterior center edge (ACE) angle were measured by faux profile radiography. All the clinical and radiological data of the groups were analyzed separately for the pre-postoperative scores also the amount of improvement in all parameters were analyzed. SPSS20 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL) was used for statistical analysis. Wilcoxon test, McNemar test, paired t tests, and Mann-Whitney U tests were used to compare the groups. P<0.05 were defined as statistically significant. Study included 27 patients: 17 patients were in PAD and 10 patients were in RAD. The mean follow-up period was 6.2 years (5.2-10.3 years). In all patients, the radiological and the clinical outcomes were better after TPAO except the flexion of the hip parameter. When the patient groups were evaluated as pre-postoperatively, more statistically significant parameters were found in the PAD group when compared with RAD group. Extension, impingement, TS, VAS, HHS, WOMAC score parameters in clinical outcome and LCE, ACE, Sharp angle, coverage ratio in radiological results were significantly better in PAD group postoperatively but in RAD group; only extension, VAS, HHS, and WOMAC parameters were clinically and LCE and Coverage ratio were significantly different compared with the preoperative measurements. The change of the parameters that used for the evaluation of clinical and radiological results did not show a significant difference between groups. Our data suggest that TPAO can be performed on patients with HD for both groups. Although there were fewer parameters which changed significantly after TPAO in RAD patients; the improvement of radiological and clinical results was similar for groups. Further long-term follow-up studies with large number of patients are needed to determine the proper results of TPAO.

Introduction. Increased levels of stress hormones are associated with mortality in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Aim. To compare total intravenous anaesthesia (TIVA) and desflurane added to a subanaesthetic dose of propofol. Material and Methods. Fifty patients were enrolled in this study. Fentanyl (3-5mcg/kg/h) was started in both groups. Patients were divided into two groups. The PD group (n = 25) received 1 minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) desflurane anaesthesia in addition to propofol infusion (2-3mg/kg/h), while P group (n = 25) received propofol infusion (5-6mg/kg/h) only. Biochemical data, cortisol, and insulin levels were measured preoperatively (T0), after initiation of CPB but before cross-clamping the aorta (T1), after removal of the cross-clamp (T2), and at the 24th postoperative hour (T3). Results. Systolic, diastolic, and mean arterial pressure levels were significantly higher in PD group than those in P group in T1 and T2 measurements (p ≤ 0.05). CK-MB showed a significant decrease in group P (p ≤ 0.05).When we compared both groups, cortisol levels were significantly higher in PD group than P group (p ≤ 0.05). Conclusion. Stress and haemodynamic responses were better controlled using TIVA than desflurane inhalation added to a subanaesthetic dose of propofol in patients undergoing CABG.

Synthesis and evaluation of antioxidant activity of new quinoline-2-carbaldehyde hydrazone derivatives: Bioisosteric melatonin analogues

Puskullu, M. Orhan; Shirinzadeh, Hanif; Nenni, Merve; Gurer-Orhan, Hande; Suzen, Sibel

Overproduction of reactive oxygen species results in oxidative stress that can cause fatal damage to vital cell structures. It is known that the use of antioxidants could be beneficial in the prevention or delay of numerous diseases associated with oxidative stress. Melatonin (MLT) is known as a powerful free-radical scavenger and antioxidant. It was found that indole ring of MLT can be employed by bioisosteric replacement by other aromatic rings. Quinoline derivatives constitute an important class of compounds for new drug development. Owing to quinoline and hydrazones appealing physiological properties and are mostly found in numerous biologically active compounds a series of quinoline-2-carbaldehyde hydrazone derivatives were synthesized as bioisosteric analogues of MLT, characterized and in vitro antioxidant activity was investigated by evaluating their reducing effect against oxidation of a redox-sensitive fluorescent probe. Cytotoxicity potential of all compounds was investigated both by lactate dehydrogenase leakage assay and by MTT assay.

Investigation of mucus obtained from different fish species on the acute pain induced with scalpel incision in paw of rats

Cetin, Nihal; Suleyman, Bahtiyar; Kuyrukluyildiz, Ufuk; Nalkiran, Hatice Sevim; Kiran, Altan; Gencoglu, Songul; Duzgun, Ahmet; Kurtoglu, Ilker Zeki; Yarali, Oguzhan; Gul, Mehmet Ali

No comparative study could be found for the analgesic activity of mucuses from the Oncorhynchus mykiss (OM), Salvelinus fontinalis (SF), Salmo coruhensis (SC), Acipenser gueldenstaedtii (AG), and Acipenser baerii (AB) fish species in the literature. We aimed to investigate the effects of mucuses obtained from the abovementioned fish species on scalpel incision-induced pain in the rat paw and to examine the role of oxidant/antioxidant parameters and COX-2 gene expression in the analgesic activities. Animals were divided into groups: SIC (scalpel incision; SI), SIDS (SI+25 mg/kg diclofenac sodium), SOM (SI+25 mg/kg OM mucus), SFM (SI+25 mg/kg SF mucus), SCM (SI+25 mg/kg SC mucus), SAgM (SI+25 mg/kg AG mucus), SAbM (SI+25 mg/kg AB mucus), and HG (healthy). The paw pain thresholds were measured with a Basile algesimeter before and after diclofenac sodium (DS) or mucus administration, and then the rats were euthanized with thiopental sodium. Oxidant/antioxidant and COX-2 gene expression parameters were measured in paw tissues. OM, SC, AG, and AB fish mucuses could not decrease the SI-induced pain. However, SF fish mucus prevented this pain by 69% after the first hour and by 58.3% after the third hour. DS was shown to suppress pain more weakly than SF, preventing the pain by 62.1% and 50.0% after the first and third hours, respectively. SF mucus and DS significantly inhibited increase of COX-2 gene expression, while other fish mucuses could not. None of the fish mucuses except SF mucus in conjunction with DS could significantly inhibit the increase in oxidant parameters and decrease in antioxidants. SF fish mucus should be comparatively assessed in clinical practice for treatment of postoperative pain.

Objective: The main purpose of the present study was to assess the radiographic, histological, and mechanical effects of gabapentin on fracture healing in a rat model of femur fracture. Materials and methods: A standard transverse fracture of the mid-diaphysis was created. A total of 60 female Wistar-Albino rats with the mean age of 13.5 ± 1.2 weeks were used for this experimental trial. The rats were randomized into four groups with 15 animals included in each group. Group A and B were the control groups whereas C and D were the treatment groups. Drugs were delivered by oral gavage twice a day with the daily dosage calculated according to body surface area conversion to the human equivalent dosing regimen of 1200 mg/day. Radiographic, histological, and biomechanical evaluation was performed. Results: We could not detect any statistically significant difference between the control and gabapentin treatment groups according to the comparative assessment of radiographic scores on the 15th and 30th days. Although no significant differences were found between the groups on the 15th day, histological scores were better in the control group on the 30th day. According to the results of biomechanical testing, the fractured femurs resected from the control group exhibited significantly more strength on the 30th day. Conclusions: According to the data we acquired during the present study, administration of gabapentin negatively affects the fracture healing process especially in the aspects of histological progression as well as the biomechanical strength of the callus in a rat model.

Measles outbreak in the adult age group: Evaluation of 28 cases; [Erişkin Yaş Grubunda Kizamik Salgini: 28 Olgunun Deǧerlendirilmesi]

Karakečili, Faruk; Akin, Hicran; Čikman, Aytekin; Özčiček, Fatih; Kalkan, Ahmet

Nowadays, the age group affected from measles has widened and the disease has become more common among adolescents and young adults. The number of measles case reports have increased in our country, particularly from 2010-2011, and measles outbreaks occurred in various regions in 2012 and 2013. The aim of this study was to analyze the demographical and epidemiological characteristics, clinical and laboratory findings, and complications of adult patients with measles who were affected during the outbreak. A total of 28 patients (25 male, 3 female; age range: 19-39 years, median age: 24) who were hospitalized and followed-up in our clinic between January 2013 and June 2013, were evaluated. In the serum sample of the index case, measles-specific IgM antibodies were detected by ELISA, and measles virus RNA by real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), then genotyping was performed to detect the epidemiological relationship. In all of the other cases, measles IgM and IgG antibodies were screened by ELISA. The most common symptoms on admission included high fever (n= 28, 100%), malaise (n= 25, 89%), sore throat (n= 25, 89%), headache (n= 20, 71%) and cough (n= 18, 64%). At physical examination, rash (n= 28,100%), lymphadenopathy (n= 11, 39%) and conjunctivitis (n= 10, 36%) were in the foreground, and Koplik spots were detected in five (18%) cases. The most common laboratory findings were; increased level of C-reactive protein (n= 15, 54%), leukopenia (n= 12, 43%) and increased serum levels of aminotransferases (n= 12, 43%), and thrombocytopenia was detected in five (18%) patients. One or more complications (secondary bacterial pneumonia in 5, diarrhea in 4, hepatitis in 3 and otitis in 2 cases) developed in the eight (29%) patients. Measles RT-PCR and IgM tests yielded positive results for the index case, and the isolate was identified as D8 strain by genotyping. Measles IgM antibodies were also positive in all of the other cases. The hospitalization period was estimated as 3-7 days (median: 5 days), while all the patients were discharged with recovery. It appeared that, our index case had come from a troop in Amasya province three days ago and he had a history of contact with suspected measles patients. In addition, the D8 strain determined in the index case was found to be related with the strain that caused the outbreak in Amasya province. Of the cases, 20 (71.4%) were military personnel, and eight (28.6%) were civilian who had histories of contact with military personnel. Regardless of immunity status in the outbreak period, all of the healthcare staff in our hospital, especially in risky departments, was recommended to be vaccinated. Personnel vaccination was provided at a high rate, however nosocomial transmission occurred in two unvaccinated cases. In conclusion, measles is an important health problem, especially in the adult age group, because of the complications and labour loss. For outbreak management; the awareness of health personnel should be increased following the identification of index case, proper isolation measures should be taken for the hospitalized patients, and routine reporting should be carried out timely and accurately.

Fertility outcomes after reversal of tubal sterilisation; [Tubal reanastamoz sonrası fertilite sonuçları]

Seyfettinoğlu, Sevtap; Arlıer, Sefa; Adıgüzel, Fikriye Işıl; Adıgüzel, Cevdet; Narin, Mehmet Ali; Nazik, Hakan

Aim: The aim of this study was to reveal the reasons why women request reversal of tubal sterilisation and to compare surgical techniques in terms of fertility outcomes. Material and Method: This retrospective study included 36 patients, who underwent tubal reanastomosis surgery in our clinic between January 2008- June 2015. Analysis was made of laparoscopic tubal reanas-tomosis applied to 7 patients and of reanastomosis applied with laparotomy to 29 patients. For each patient, data were recorded on age at the time of sterilization, age at the time of reversal, body mass index, smoking use, alcohol use, pelvic surgery history, subfertility, additional diseases, known male infertility, demographics, hormone profiles, hysterosalpingograhy (HSG) results, applied sterilization methods, reversal methods, and the reasons for requesting tubal reversal. The fertility outcomes were evaluated. Results: At the end of mean 2 years follow-up of patients, in the laparotomy group, 20 (69%) patients had not achieved pregnancy, 4 (13.8%) had abortus, 1 (3.4%) had an ectopic pregnancy and 4 (13.8%) patients had live births. In the laparoscopic group, pregnancy was not achieved in 5 patients (71.4%), 1 (%) was complicated with ectopic pregnancy, and 1 14.3%) had a live birth. Discussion: Before reversal of tubal sterilisation, a detailed patient history should be taken, the data of the sterilization operation should be accessed, and laparoscopic surgery must be presented to the patient as an option. When considering the probability of pregnancy, the patients’s age, BMI, ad-ditional diseases, and other factors that affect fertility must be taken into consideration. Although the number of cases was limited, the results of this study support the view that laparoscopic tubal reanastomosis is a safe and effective procedure.

An analysis of university students’ levels of self-control according to their ego states; [Üniversite öğrencilerinin ego durumlarina göre öz denetimlerinin incelenmesi]

    Kaygusuz, Canani; Ozpolat, Ahmet Ragıp

Problem Statement: Although it is well known that parents’ methods of raising their children significantly affect their children’s personalities and how they face life, this study has been designed because there is a lack of specific research on which ego states of adults are associated with self-control. In the present study, self-control and ego states have been taken into consideration together and answers to the following questions were sought. Is there any association between the subdimensions of ego states and self-control? Do ego states predict self-control? Purpose of the Study: The purpose of this study is to investigate the association between ego states of university students and their levels of self-control, and to determine whether or not ego states predict their levels of self-control. Methods: Since this study aims to investigate whether subdimensions of ego states and self-control are correlated, an associational survey model was used. The study was conducted with 290 participating university students. The data were collected using an ego states scale and a self-control scale. The results suggested that the parent ego state, adult ego state, and child ego state dimensions are significantly correlated with the experiential self-control reformative self-control and redressive self-control subdimensions of the self-control scale. Findings and Results: Based on the findings, it was concluded that the parent ego state is associated with reformative self-control, the adult ego state is associated with reformative and redressive self-control, and the child ego state is associated with experiential self-control. According to the results of the one way ANOVA, which tested the significance of the regression model, ego states predict the self-control levels of individuals significantly, F3-274: 6.356; p <.001. Conclusion and Recommendations: Results suggest that students with high parent ego states make decisions using reformative self-control; students with high adult ego states make decisions using reformative and redressive self-control; and students with high child ego states make decisions using experiential self-control.

Nayki, Umit; Onk, Didem; Balci, Gurhan; Nayki, Cenk; Onk, Alper; Gunay, Murat

Objective: The study aims to investigate the effects of diabetes mellitus (DM) on ovarian injury and reserve in a rat model. Study Design: In this prospective experimental study, 16 female Sprague-Dawley albino rats (12 weeks, 220-240 g) were randomly divided into 2 groups. Group 1 included 8 normal healthy rats as controls. No drug was administered to the controls. Group 2 included the other 8 rats in which diabetes was induced by intraperitoneal injections of streptozotocin (STZ). After overt DM occurred (blood glucose >250 mg/dl), all the animals were euthanized and blood samples were collected by cardiac puncture for biochemical analysis. Bilateral oophorectomy was performed for histopathological examination. Immunoexpressions of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kB) and caspase-3 as well as anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels were assessed. Values were analyzed by t test. Results: Immunoexpressions of NF-kB and caspase-3 were significantly higher in non-treated diabetic rats than in the control group (p = 0.011 and p = 0.010, respectively). In healthy control group, AMH levels (3.22 ± 0.58 ng/ml) were significantly higher than in the non-treated diabetic group (1.41 ± 0.25 ng/dl; p = 0.024). Conclusion: Hyperglycemia causes severe ovarian injury via NF-kB pathway and caspase-3 apoptotic pathway, leading to the decrease in ovarian reserve in STZ-induced diabetic rats.

Surgery was performed under local anesthesia usıng the transcanal, push-through (transperforation) technique. Perichondrium supported by thinned cartilage graft obtained from the tragal cartilage was used for tympanic membrane repair. Results Graft acceptance levels after 12 months in small, medium, and large perforations were 100%, 93.5%, and 93.75%, respectively, and 95% on average. Preoperative air-bone gap values were 18.64 ± 9.63 decibel (dB), 22.51 ± 9.66 dB, and 28.43 ± 11.36 dB, respectively, and 23.18 ± 11.36 dB on average, while 12th month postoperative air-bone gap values were 9.14 ± 8.27 dB, 11.25 ± 6.73 dB, and 17.37 ± 9.22 dB, respectively, and 12.37 ± 8.28 dB on average. The difference between pre- and postoperative 12th month air-bone gap values was statistically significant (p < 0.005). Conclusion The use of thinned cartilage-supported perichondrial grafts in patients with all sizes of tympanic membrane perforation is safe and effective in terms of both anatomical healing and restoration of hearing and can represent a first-choice technique that is easy to perform and involves minimal morbidity.

Association between serum folic acid level and erectile dysfunction

    Karabakan, M.; Erkmen, A.E.; Guzel, O.; Aktas, B.K.; Bozkurt, A.; Akdemir, S.

Summary: This study measured the serum folic acid (FA) level in patients with erectile dysfunction (ED) and evaluated the possible association between the serum FA level and erectile function. The study divided 120 patients with ED into 3 groups of 40 patients each: those with severe, moderate and mild ED. Forty healthy men served as controls. Fasting serum samples were obtained, and the total testosterone, cholesterol and FA levels were measured using chemiluminescent immunoassays. There were no significant differences in the mean age, mean body mass index or mean serum total testosterone and cholesterol levels among the three ED groups and controls (P > 0.05). The mean serum FA concentrations were 7.2 ± 3.7, 7.1 ± 3.2, 10.2 ± 4.6 and 10.7 ± 4.6 ng ml-1 in the severe, moderate and mild ED and control groups respectively. The mean serum FA concentration was significantly higher in the control group than in the severe and moderate ED groups (both P < 0.001), but not the mild ED group (P = 0.95). Considering the significant differences in the serum FA levels between the control and ED groups, serum FA deficiency might reflect the severity of ED.

Role of Fanconi anemia/BRCA pathway genes in hepatocellular carcinoma chemoresistance

Ferroudj, Sana; Yildiz, Gokhan; Bouras, Mourad; Iscan, Evin; Ekin, Umut; Ozturk, Mehmet

Aim: To investigate the expression of DNA repair genes and the impact of the breast cancer 1, early onset (BRCA1) protein on chemoresistance of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Methods: Microarray gene expression datasets were analyzed using the gene set enrichment analysis method. BRCA1 protein was tested by Western blotting. Response of HCC cells to interstrand cross-links was investigated by cell viability assay following exposure to mitomycin C, cisplatin, and melphalan. Effects of BRCA1 ectopic expression were studied in HepG2 cells with BRCA1-expression plasmids. Effects of BRCA1 downregulation were studied in SNU449 cells with BRCA1-specific siRNAs. Response of transfected SNU449 cells to mitomycin C was analyzed by cell viability tests and cell cycle analysis using flow cytometry. Results: Expression of Fanconi anemia and double-stranded DNA break repair genes was significantly upregulated in HCC tumors. This upregulation displayed a gradual amplification during tumor progression. BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes were among consistently upregulated genes. Epithelial-like HCC cells had low BRCA1 expression and low chemoresistance, whereas mesenchymal-like HCC cells had high BRCA1 expression and increased chemoresistance. Ectopic expression of BRCA1 increased the chemoresistance of epithelial-like HepG2 cells. Conversely, BRCA1 knockdown chemosensitized mesenchymal-like SNU449 cells. Chemosensitization of SNU449 cells was due to cell cycle arrest at 4N stage. Conclusion: Increased expression of Fanconi anemia and double-stranded DNA repair genes such as BRCA1 is a novel mechanism of HCC chemoresistance. However, functional inactivation of BRCA1 expression is sufficient to reverse such chemoresistance.

We aimed to evaluate the effect of melatonin on oxidative stress and ovarian injury in rats. Twenty-four Sprague-Dawley albino rats were divided into three groups: Group 1 as nondiabetic healthy controls (n = 8), group 2 as nontreated diabetic rats (n = 8) and group 3 as melatonin-treated diabetic rats (n = 8). After overt diabetes was produced by intraperitoneal injection of streptozosin, 20 mg/kg/day of melatonin was given intraperitoneally to group 3 for a week. NF-kB and caspase-3 immunoexpressions, lipid peroxidation, the activities of antioxidative enzymes, total oxidant capacity and total antioxidant capacity were assessed. Immunoexpressions of NF-kB and caspase-3 were significantly lower in group 3 than group 2. There was a significant decrease in superoxide dismutase activity in group 2 than group 1 and a significant increase in group 3 compared with group 2. We observed a nonsignificant decrease in catalase activity between group 1 and group 2 and a nonsignificant increase between group 2 and group 3. There was a nonsignificant increase in the plasma level of total oxidant status in group 2 than group 1, but a significant decrease was observed in group 3 compared to group 2. Total antioxidant status was significantly lower in group 2 compared with group 1 and group 3. In conclusion, melatonin ameliorates the negative effects of oxidative stress on DM-related ovarian injury.
