Aim To measure and evaluate the thickness of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GC-IPL) in patients with Parkinson's disease using optical coherence tomography (OCT). Methods 58 eyes of 30 patients with Parkinson's disease and 60 eyes of 30 healthy individuals were enrolled to this study according to defined criteria. RNFL thickness, central macular thickness (CMT) and ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GC-IPL) thickness were measured in these groups. The Parkinson's patient group was also subjected to Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) and Mini Mental Status Exam (MMSE). Results No difference was found between the two groups with respect to age, sex and the best corrected visual acuity (BCVA). Mean, superior, and inferior quadrant RNFL values in the Parkinson's patients were found statistically significantly lower than those in the control group (P < 0.001, P < 0.049, P < 0.001, respectively). While CMT was statistically similar between the groups, GC-IPL thickness was statistically significantly lower in Parkinson's patients (p = 0.028). There was no significant correlation between the duration of Parkinson's disease and RNFL thickness. While there was not any correlation between UPDRS total and motor scores and superior and temporal quadrant RNFL thicknesses, a significant negative correlation was established between RNFL nasal, inferior quadrant and RNFL mean thicknesses (P = 0.022; P = 0.035; P = 0.002, respectively). A significant positive correlation was found between MMSE and nasal and mean RNFL thicknesses (P = 0.046; P = 0.019, respectively). Conclusion RNFL and GC-IPL thicknesses were found lower in Parkinson's patients. These parameters may be useful to evaluate neurodegeneration and to monitorize neuroprotective therapies.

Aim: To investigate and analyze the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant efficacy of curcumin in experimentally induced middle ear infection. Method: Twenty-four Wistar albino rats with otomicroscopic examination findings within normal limits were included in the study. Study groups were established after Streptococcus pneumoniae was inoculated into the middle ear cavity of all rats. No medication was administered to Group 1, the control group. Group 2 was administered 50 mg/kg/day amoxicillin intraperitoneally. Group 3 was administered 50 mg/kg/day amoxicillin together with 30 mg/kg/day curcumin intraperitoneally. Blood specimens and temporal bones were collected on the 10th day of medication from the 22 rats in which acute otitis media developed. Serum glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase activities and malondialdehyde levels were measured. Inflammatory cell infiltration, vascular proliferation, and epithelial proliferation were assessed histopathologically in middle ear mucosa specimens, and the results were compared among the groups. Results: Malondialdehyde levels in the group given curcumin were significantly lower than those of the control group, while serum glutathione peroxidase activity was also lower compared to that of the control group. No significant difference was observed among the groups in terms of superoxide dismutase activity. Although there were no significant findings in terms of histopathological data, epithelial proliferation in the groups receiving antibiotherapy was suppressed compared to the control group. Similarly, curcumin was observed to have a positive effect on inflammatory cell infiltration. No significant changes were observed in terms of vascular proliferation. Conclusion: With its wide and safe dose range, curcumin represents grounds for optimism in terms of anti-inflammatory treatment in acute otitis media.

Sunar, Serap; Anar, Mustafa; Sengul, Meryem; Agar, Guleray
In this research, the genotoxic and antigenotoxic effects of methanol extract of Sempervivum armenum (MSA) were studied using micronucleus (MN) test and sister chromatid exchange (SCE) test systems in cultured human peripheral blood cells. According to the SCE and MN tests results, MSA reduced the genotoxic effects of aflatoxin B1. In order to explain the reason for the antigenotoxic effects of MSA, antioxidants levels were determined. Cotreatments of 5, 10, 20 mg/mL concentrations of MSA with aflatoxin B1 decreased the frequencies of SCE, MN and the malondialdehyde level and increased the amount of superoxide dismutase, glutathione and glutathione peroxidase which were decreased by aflatoxin. The results of this experiment showed that MSA has strong antioxidative and antigenotoxic effects and this antigenotoxic activities of MSA can be due to the antioxidant activities.

Bilirubin may have important antiatherosclerotic effects. Prediabetes (PD), the intermediate stage before diabetes mellitus, is associated with increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. We evaluated the relationship between serum bilirubin levels and carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT), as a surrogate marker of subclinical atherosclerosis, in patients with PD. We enrolled 170 consecutive patients with PD. The patients underwent ultrasonography to evaluate cIMT. The patients were divided into groups according to cIMT values (<0.9 vs ≥0.9 mm). The patients with cIMT ≥ 0.9 mm had significantly higher diastolic blood pressure, neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and glycated hemoglobin values compared with patients having cIMT < 0.9 mm, whereas total and direct bilirubin values were significantly lower in this group. Multivariate regression analyses revealed NLR and total bilirubin as the independent predictors of subclinical atherosclerosis. The present study demonstrated that NLR and lower total bilirubin levels were independent predictors of subclinical atherosclerosis in patients with PD. Simple measures such as NRL and total bilirubin may provide predictive information regarding the risk of cardiovascular disease in patients with PD.

Background: Planned re-laparotomies are a series of surgical interventions that are rarely used and have a high mortality rate. The aim of this study was to investigate the factors affecting mortality and the effectiveness of the use of the Bogota bag for temporary closure of the abdomen in patients for whom re-laparotomy was planned. Material/Methods: A retrospective examination was made of data of patients in whom a Bogota bag was used in planned relaparotomies for various reasons in the General Surgery Department of Suleyman Demirel University Medical Faculty between June 2008 and April 2014. Results: Bogota bags were used in a total of 38 patients, comprising 23 (60.5%) males and 15 (39.5%) females, with a mean age of 58.94±17.89 years. The mean period of hospitalization was 14.5 days (range, 1–143 days) and the mean number of operations during that time was 3 (range, 1–11). The mean duration of intensive care unit stay was 6 days (range, 1–143 days). Malignancy was determined in 8 patients (21.1%). Indications were intraabdominal sepsis in 23 patients (60.5%), mesenteric vascular disease in 10 patients (26.3%), and packing was required in 5 patients (13.2%). Mortality developed in 25 patients (65.8%). A significant relationship was determined between mortality and a diagnosis of mesenteric artery ischemia (p: 0.035). The mortality rate was 56% (n: 13) in patients diagnosed with intra-abdominal sepsis. A relationship was determined between mortality and age (p: 0.015), duration of hospital stay (p: 0.007), need for cardiac inotrope (p: 0.01), and need for mechanical ventilation (p: 0.01). The mean Apache II score was 26.4±5 for patients who died and 15.8±5.2 for surviving patients (p<0.001). In 5 (38.4%) of the 13 surviving patients, primary repair was applied to the abdomen, and in the remaining 8 patients abdominal wall repair was performed using dual mesh. Conclusions: In patients in whom a Bogota bag was used, which is a cheap and easy method for temporary closure of the abdomen, the high mortality rates seen are related to diagnosis, Apache II score, age, and organ failure.

Background: Prominent ear deformity (PD) is an unacceptable condition of pinna that affects 5% of the population and is associated with emotional stress, behavioral disturbances, and social restrictions in relationships. Conchal hypertrphy, inadequate formation of antihelical fold, earlobe placement ahead than it should be, or various combinations of these changes are main characteristics of PD. Many surgical techniques have been described for the PD. The authors' aim was to present laterally based postauricular dermal flap combination with cartilage-sparing methods and effectiveness of this technique in suture extrusion prevention and reducing the rate of recurrence with long-term results. Methods: Forty-one patients had bilateral and 6 patients had unilateral PD, a total of 47 patients with a mean age of 14.48 were operated by using this combined procedure. A laterally based supraperichondrial dermal flap was prepared from a deepithelized elliptical postauricular incision. Mustarde and Furnas suture techniques were used solely for PD correction. The dissected laterally based dermal flap was fixed to the mastoid bone with sutures in stretched position after reshaping the auricular cartilage with sutures. Results: The average helix-mastoid distance was (mm) 16.28±2.36, concha-mastoid angle was 25.71±0.968 on 12- month measurements. The helix-mastoid distance showed an increase of 1 to 3 mm, in the concha-mastoid angle measurements of 1° to 2°. Statistically significant changes were observed between the average preoperative, postoperative 1. month, postoperative 12. month helix-mastoid distances (mm), and month concha-mastoid angle (0) measurements (P=0.0001). Conclusions: The laterally based postauricular dermal flap technique is an effective method to prevent suture extrusion and recurrence which are the most important complications of otoplasty procedure and easy to apply.

Intra-abdominal infections (IAI) are an important cause of morbidity and are frequently associated with poor prognosis, particularly in high-risk patients. The cornerstones in the management of complicated IAIs are timely effective source control with appropriate antimicrobial therapy. Empiric antimicrobial therapy is important in the management of intra-abdominal infections and must be broad enough to cover all likely organisms because inappropriate initial antimicrobial therapy is associated with poor patient outcomes and the development of bacterial resistance. The overuse of antimicrobials is widely accepted as a major driver of some emerging infections (such as C. difficile), the selection of resistant pathogens in individual patients, and for the continued development of antimicrobial resistance globally. The growing emergence of multi-drug resistant organisms and the limited development of new agents available to counteract them have caused an impending crisis with alarming implications, especially with regards to Gram-negative bacteria. An international task force from 79 different countries has joined this project by sharing a document on the rational use of antimicrobials for patients with IAIs. The project has been termed AGORA (Antimicrobials: A Global Alliance for Optimizing their Rational Use in Intra-Abdominal Infections). The authors hope that AGORA, involving many of the world's leading experts, can actively raise awareness in health workers and can improve prescribing behavior in treating IAIs.

Tuncer, O.N.; Kemaloğlu, C.; Erbasan, O.; Gölbaşı, İ.; Türkay, C.; Bayezid, Ö.
Introduction Donor organ shortage is still a problem for heart transplantation. Only 10% of patients in waiting list undergo heart transplantation. Over the last 5 years, 2 different continuous flow pumps, the HeartMate II and the HeartWare, have been successful clinically in the alternative treatment of patients with end-stage heart disease. Methods Fifty-five patients underwent left ventricular assist device implantation between 2011 and 2014. Patients were followed on pump support for complications and intraoperative outcomes. Potential device-related complications include infections, bleeding liver dysfunction, renal dysfunction, right ventricular failure, stroke, thromboembolism, gastrointestinal bleeding, and wound infection. Results The only preoperative significant difference between groups in the study was age; the Heartmate II group were significantly older than Heartware group. There were no differences in gender, body mass index, or body surface area. The Heartware has a better 1-year survival rate, although the difference was not significant. Patients with Heartmate II had a higher incidence of gastrointestinal bleeding and driveline infection. The Heartware group had a higher incidence of stroke and pump thrombosis. Conclusions The Heartmate II and Heartware are comparable in most respects such as survival, intraoperative features, and major complications.

Objective To determine the effect of synchronous endometrial endometrioid cancer (SEEC) on the prognosis of patients with Stage 1 endometrioid ovarian cancer (EOC). Study design Clinicopathological data of cases with Stage 1 EOC from January 2000 to November 2013 were retrieved from the computerized database of Etlik Zubeyde Hanim Women's Health and Research Hospital. Of the 31 patients included in the study, 15 patients had primary synchronous endometrial and ovarian cancer (SEOC) (Group 1) and 16 patients had EOC alone (Group 2). Results Ovarian cancer substage and grade were compared between the two groups, and no significant differences were found. Most of the patients with SEEC had Grade 1 tumours (n = 13, 86.7%). In Group 1, nine (60.0%) patients had endometrial tumours with superficial myometrial invasion, and six (40.0%) patients had deep myometrial invasion. Median follow-up was 94 months. Ten-year disease-free survival rates were 92.9% for Group 1 and 84.6% for Group 2 (p = 0.565). Conclusion Patients with Stage 1 EOC have excellent long-term survival. The presence of SEEC does not influence the prognosis of patients with Stage 1 EOC, even in the presence of deep myometrial invasion.

Aim: To investigate the effect of Kineret® on ischemia reperfusion (IR) injury in rat ovaries. Methods: Rats were divided into four groups: ovarian IR (IRG); 50 mg/kg Kineret® + ovarian IR (KIR-50); 100 mg/kg Kineret® + ovarian IR (KIR-100); and sham operation (SOC). KIR-50 (n = 10) and KIR-100 (n = 10) groups received an intraperitoneal injection of Kineret® at doses of 50 and 100 mg/kg, respectively. IRG and SOC (n = 10) rat groups were given distilled water as solvent using the same method. The results were compared between the groups. Results: In rats in which IR occurred, oxidant parameters, such as malondialdehyde (MDA) and myeloperoxidase (MPO), were increased, the level of proinflammatory interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β) was elevated and total glutathione (tGSH) as an antioxidant was decreased in the ovarian tissues. Administration of Kineret® at a dose of 100 mg/kg inhibited the increase of MDA, MOP and IL-1β and a decrease in tGSH caused by IR more significantly than administration of Kineret® at a dose of 50 mg/kg. In addition, 100 mg/kg Kineret® significantly decreased severe hemorrhage, degeneration and inflammatory signs in the follicular cells, caused by IR. Kineret® at 100 mg/kg markedly ameliorated increased apoptosis in ovarian tissue with IR more significantly than 50 mg/kg kineret. Conclusion: Our findings indicate that Kineret® might be useful in clinical practice for the treatment of damage that may occur as a result of ovarian torsion.

AIM: To compare the effects of thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP) and thiamine (TM) in oxidative optic neuropathy in rats induced by ethambutol. METHODS: The animals were divided into four groups: a control group (CG), an ethambutol control (ETC) group, TM plus ethambutol group (TMG), and TPP plus ethambutol group (TPPG). One hour after intraperitoneal administration of TM 20 mg/kg to the TMG group and TPP 20 mg/kg to TPPG group, 30 mg/kg ethambutol was given via gavage to all the groups but the CG. This procedure was repeated once daily for 90d. After that period, all rats were exposed to high levels of anaesthesia in order to investigate the gene expression of malondialdehyde and glutathione in removed optic nerve tissue and histopathologically to examine these tissues. RESULTS: Malondialdehyde gene expression significantly increased, whereas glutathione gene expression significantly decreased in the ETC group compared to the CG. TM could not prevent the increase of malondialdehyde gene expression and the decrease of glutathione, while TPP significantly could suppress. Histopathologically, significant vacuolization in the optic nerve, single-cell necrosis in the glial cells, and a decrease in oligodendrocytes were observed in the ETC group. Vacuolization in the optic nerve, a decrease in oligodendrocytes and single-cell necrosis were found in the TMG group, while no pathological finding was observed in the TPPG group except for mild vacuolization. CONCLUSION: TPP protects the optic nerve against the ethambutol-induced toxicity but TM does not. TPP can be beneficial in prophilaxis of optic neuropathy in ethambutol therapy.
- ArticleYalnız künye2016Determination of genotoxic effects of fipronil in Vicia faba using random amplified polymorphic DNA analysis
Yildirim, Nalan; Agar, Guleray
This study was undertaken to appreciate genotoxic potential of fipronil herbicides in the roots of Vicia faba seedlings. Fipronil was clearly dose dependent on root growth inhibitors, total soluble protein, and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) assays. Increase in concentration of fipronil resulted in decreased amount of root length and increased level of protein. For the RAPD analyses, 15 RAPD primers were found to produce unique polymorphic band patterns and were subsequently used to produce a total of 110 bands of 45-1250 bp. Each primer generated 4-11 RAPD bands across 15 primers. The changes occurring in RAPD profiles following fipronil treatment included variation becoming evident as disappearance and/or appearance of DNA bands compared with the normal seedlings. These results indicated that genomic template stability was significantly affected at the above fipronil concentration. This study further confirmed that the RAPD assays are useful in determining potential genotoxicity of fipronil.

Background Drug resistance development is an expected problem during treatment with protease inhibitors (PIs), this is largely due to the fact that Pls are low-genetic barrier drugs. Resistance-associated variants (RAVs) however may also occur naturally, and prior to treatment with Pls, the clinical impact of this basal resistance remains unknown. In Turkey, there is yet to be an investigation into the hepatitis C (HCV) drug associated resistance to oral antivirals. Materials and methods 178 antiviral-naïve patients infected with HCV genotype 1 were selected from 27 clinical centers of various geographical regions in Turkey and included in the current study. The basal NS3 Pls resistance mutations of these patients were analyzed. Results In 33 (18.5%) of the patients included in the study, at least one mutation pattern that can cause drug resistance was identified. The most frequently detected mutation pattern was T54S while R109K was the second most frequently detected. Following a more general examination of the patients studied, telaprevir (TVR) resistance in 27 patients (15.2%), boceprevir (BOC) resistance in 26 (14.6%) patients, simeprevir (SMV) resistance in 11 (6.2%) patients and faldaprevir resistance in 13 (7.3%) patients were detected. Our investigation also revealed that rebound developed in the presence of a Q80K mutation and amongst two V55A mutations following treatment with TVR, while no response to treatment was detected in a patient with a R55K mutation. Conclusion We are of the opinion that drug resistance analyses can be beneficial and necessary in revealing which variants are responsible for pre-treatment natural resistance and which mutations are responsible for the viral breakthrough that may develop during the treatment.
- ArticleAçık Erişim2016Novel indole-based melatonin analogues substituted with triazole, thiadiazole and carbothioamides: studies on their antioxidant, chemopreventive and cytotoxic activities
Shirinzadeh, Hanif; Ince, Elif; Westwell, Andrew D.; Gurer-Orhan, Hande; Suzen, Sibel
Melatonin (MLT) is a well-known free-radical scavenger, involving in the prevention of cellular damage that can lead to cancer, ageing and a variety of neurodegenerative diseases. Research on MLT-related compounds has been required to optimise the maximum pharmaceutical activity with the lowest side effects. In our ongoing research, we have synthesized new indole-based MLT analogues as potential antioxidant agents by modifying the MLT molecule. In this study, we build on previous findings, through the synthesis, characterization and in vitro antioxidant profiling of a series of new indole-based MLT analogues which possess triazole, thiadiazole and carbothioamides on the third position on the indole ring. In vitro antioxidant activity was investigated by evaluating their reducing effect against oxidation of a redox sensitive fluorescent probe and their radical scavenging activity was assessed via the DPPH assay. In addition, in vitro cytotoxic effects of newly synthesized compounds were investigated in CHO-K1 cells using the MTT assay.

Introduction: Association of vitamin D, inflammation and endothelial dysfunction, beside the classic bone metabolism disorders, may explain the pathogenesis of numerous diseases associated with vitamin D deficiency. While large numbers of reports support the relationship of vitamin D with inflammation, several reports fail to confirm this relationship. Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) are novel and inexpensive markers of inflammation that can be studied in all centers. The goal of this study was to investigate the association between 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25(OH)D) and inflammation with the novel inflammatory markers NLR and PLR. Material and methods: This study was performed retrospectively. Results of the simultaneously performed 25(OH)D, parathyroid hormone, albumin, calcium, phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase and creatinine level measurements and complete blood count were recorded. The data of 4120 patients were included in the study. Results: Between vitamin D deficient and non-deficient groups there were significant differences in PLR (p < 0.001) and NLR (p = 0.001). Vitamin D had a significant negative correlation with PLR (p < 0.001) and NLR (p < 0.001). Multiple regression analysis indicated that 25(OH)D was independently and negatively correlated with PLR (OR = 0.994, 95% CI 0.991-0.998, p = 0.02). Conclusions: Platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio and NLR were significantly associated with 25(OH)D levels, and PLR was found to be an independent predictor of 25(OH)D levels. Our study revealed an inverse association of vitamin D levels and inflammation with these inexpensive and universally available markers.
- ArticleAçık Erişim2016Genotoxic evaluation of bupivacaine and levobupivacaine in the Drosophila wing spot test
Gürbüzel, Mehmet; Karaca, Ugur; Karayilan, Nermin
Bupivacaine and levobupivacaine are amino amide local anesthetics commonly used in medical practice. Although bupivacaine consists of a racemic mixture of S (–)-bupivacaine and R (+)-bupivacaine enantiomers, levobupivacaine is comprised of pure S (–)-bupivacaine. It has been known that levobupivacaine is preferable to bupivacaine since it may cause cardiovascular and nervous system toxicity. For determining genotoxicity of these anesthetics, we used the wing somatic mutation and recombination test in Drosophilamelanogaster. Three-day-old trans-heterozygous larvae were treated with bupivacaine and levobupivacaine. Analysis of the standard crosses indicated that bupivacaine and levobupivacaine did not exhibit mutagenic or recombinogenic activity until toxic doses have been reached at the larval stage. When we examined bupivacaine and levobupivacaine in the HB cross, bupivacaine did not exhibit any genotoxicity at high concentrations (500 µg/mL), but levobupivacaine did exert genotoxicity at high concentrations (1000 µg/mL)—depending on the substantial recombinogenic effect.

Acute pancreatitis (AP) is considered as major problem around the world and the incidence of AP is increasing. Carvacrol (CAR), a monoterpenic phenol, has good antioxidant activity. This in vivo study was designed to evaluate whether CAR provide protection against AP that developed by pancreas injury. The rats were randomised into groups to receive (I) no therapy; (II) 50 µg/kg cerulein at 1 h intervals by four intraperitonally (i.p.) injections; (III) 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg CAR by one i.p. injection; and (IV) cerulein plus CAR after 2 h of cerulein administration. 12 h later, serum samples were obtained to assess pancreatic function, the lipase and amylase values. The oxidative stress markers were evaluated by changes in the amount of lipid peroxides measured as malondialdehyde (MDA) and changes in main tissue antioxidant enzyme levels including SOD, CAT and GSH-PX. Histopathological examination was performed using scoring systems. Additionally, oxidative DNA damage was determined by measuring the increases of 8-hydroxy-deoxyguanosine (8-OH-dG) formations. We found that the increasing doses of CAR decreased AP-induced MDA and 8-OH-dG levels. Moreover, the pancreas antioxidant enzyme activities were higher than that of the rats in the AP group when compared to the AP plus CAR group. In the treatment groups, the lipase and amylase were reduced. Besides, histopathological findings in the pancreatic tissue were alleviated (p < 0.05). We suggest that CAR could be a safe and potent new drug candidate for treating AP through its antioxidative mechanism of action for the treatment of a wide range of disorders related to pancreas.

Objective: To investigate the effect of HRE (Hippophae rhamnoides extract) on oral mucositis induced in rats with MTX. Material and Methods: Experimental animals were divided into groups as healthy (HG), HRE+MTX (HMTX), and control group, which received MTX (MTXC). HMTX group received 50 mg/kg HRE while MTXC and HG groups received equivolume distilled water with gavage once a day. After one hour of HRE and distilled water administration, HMTX and MTXC groups received a single dose of oral MTX 5 mg/ kg. This procedure was repeated for one month. Results: The levels of MDA, IL-1β, and TNF-α were found to be significantly higher in the cheek, lower lip, and tongue tissue of the animals receiving MTX, compared with HG and HMTX groups; however, these parameters were lower in the cheek and low lip tissue, and a milder damage ocurred in these tissues, compared with the tongue tissue in MTXC group. No histopathologic damage was observed in the cheek, lower lip, and tongue tissues of the rats treated with HRE. Conclusion: This findings indicate that HRE as a natural product is an important advantage compared with synthetic drugs for prophylaxis of oral mucositis developed due to MTX.

Their anti-proliferative activities were evaluated against five cancer cells lines, namely, A549, A498, HeLa, A375, and HepG2 using the MTT method. Most of the compounds showed moderate to high activity with IC50 values in the range of 0.029-0.729 μM. Of all the synthesized compounds, 10 and 19 exhibited the most potent anti-proliferative activities against cancer cells, and 10 was identified as the most promising compound.

Objective The objective of the study was to compare the efficacy of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) and computed tomography (CT) in the diagnosis of the fracture of the bones that form the elbow joint and the determination of treatment method in elbow injuries. Methods Forty-nine patients aged 5 to 65 years, who were admitted with low-energy elbow injuries, had at least 1 fracture of the elbow joint bones, and underwent CT scanning, were included in this study. Before the initiation of the study, orthopedic surgeons and emergency physicians determined a common treatment based on the fracture characteristics. Patients were first evaluated with direct radiography, and then with POCUS by trained emergency physicians. Emergency physicians made treatment decisions based on the ultrasonography results. Then, CT scans were performed. The CT images were interpreted by radiologists. Orthopedic surgeons made treatment decisions based on the CT interpretations. Results Forty-nine patients with elbow injury were included in the study. Eighteen (37%) patients were women, and 31 (63%) were men. The mean age was 21 ± 15 years. Compared with CT, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of POCUS in fracture detection were 97%, 88%, 94%, and 93%, respectively. Although the sensitivity and specificity of POCUS in the decision for reduction were 95% and 100%, respectively, it was 93% and 100% in the decision for surgery. Conclusion In conclusion, POCUS was shown to be successfully applied in the diagnosis and management of elbow injuries, in which direct radiography was inefficient and CT scans were required.
