Two novel silver(I) complexes with diclofenac, ({2-(2,6-dicholoroanilino)phenylacetic acid} = dicl) namely [Ag(dicl)]n (1) and [Ag(dicl)(bipy)]n (2) (bipy: 4,4'-bipyridine), have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, thermal analysis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. X-ray crystallographic data of 1 revealed that dicl anion adopts a μ3-η1,η2 coordinated mode link three Ag atoms generate 1D infinite chain structure. In 2, dicl ligand plays crucial role to form double-ladder chain structure, clamping two neighboring [Ag(μ-bipy)]∞ chains by using carboxylate oxygen atoms (O1, O2). The most interesting structural feature of 2 is the presence of strong π···π interactions between aromatic phenyl rings of dicl placed in the adjacent 1D chains, leads to forming 2D slab structure. The coordination modes of dicl in the title complexes are supported by using IR spectroscopy. Thermal stabilities of 1 and 2 have been determined by TG/DTA/DTG techniques. The luminescent properties of complex 1 and 2 have been investigated in the solid state at room temperature. Furthermore, the title complexes have been tested for their in vitro antibacterial activities and are determined to be highly effective for antibacterial activity against Gram(+) and Gram(−) pathogenic bacteria cells. 1 and 2 showed activity on Fungi, as well.

Contrast media (CM) is known to have nephrotoxic adverse effects. Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) is the most abundant and active catechin in green tea, and has strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This study investigated whether EGCG can reduce contrast-induced nephrotoxicity (CIN), alone or with glycerol (GLY)-induced renal damage, and to understand its mechanisms of protection against toxicity, using models of GLY and CIN in rats. The rats were separated into eight groups (n=6 in each), as follows: Healthy, GLY, CM, GLY+CM, CM+EGCG 50mg/kg (po), GLY+CM+EGCG 50mg/kg (po), CM+EGCG 100mg/kg (po), and GLY+CM+EGCG 100mg/kg (po). Both doses of EGCG protected against CM-induced renal dysfunction, as measured by serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen (BUN). In addition, EGCG treatment markedly improved CIN-induced oxidative stress, and resulted in a significant down-regulatory effect on tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and nuclear factor (NF)-κB mRNA expression. Moreover, histopathological analysis showed that EGCG also attenuated CM-induced kidney damage. Considering the potential clinical use of CM and the numerous health benefits of EGCG, this study showed the protective role of multi-dose EGCG treatment on CIN and GLY-aggravated CIN through different mechanisms.

Etoricoxib features antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties concomitantly, suggesting that it may be beneficial in testicular ischemia reperfusion (I/R) damage. Our aim is to investigate the effects of etoricoxib on testicular I/R damage induced with torsion-detorsion (TD). The etoricoxib + torsion-detorsion (ETD) groups of animals were given etoricoxib in 50 and 100 mg/kg of body weight (ETD- 50 and ETD-100), while the testes torsion-detorsion (TTD) and sham operation rat group (SOG) animals were given single oral doses of distilled water as a solvent. TTD, ETD-50 and ETD-100 groups were subjected to 720o degrees torsion for four hours, and detorsion for four hours. The SOG group was not subjected to this procedure. Biochemical, gene expression and histopathological analyses were carried out on the testicular tissues. The levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), myeloperoxidase (MPO), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) were significantly higher, and the levels of total glutathione (tGSH) and glutathione reductase (GSHRd) were significantly lower in the TTD group, compared to the ETD-50, ETD-100 and SOG groups. Etoricoxib at a dose of 100 mg/kg better prevented I/R damage than the 50 mg/kg dose. Etoricoxib may be useful in clinical practice in the reduction of I/ R damage on testes caused by torsion-detorsion.

Objectives. The objective of this study is to investigate and evaluate the effect of Hippophae rhamnoides extract (HRE) on oropharyngeal mucositis induced in rats with methotrexate (MTX) through biochemical, gene expression, and histopathological examinations. Methods. Experimental animals were divided into a healthy group (HG), a HRE+MTX (HREM) group, HRE group (HREG), and a control group that received MTX (MTXG). The HREM and HREG groups of rats was administered 50 mg/kg HRE, while the MTXG and HG groups were given an equal volume distilled water with gavage. Then, the HREM and MTXG rat groups were given oral MTX at a dose of 5 mg/kg 1 hour after HRE and distilled water was administered. This procedure was repeated for 1 month. At the end of this period, all of the animals were sacrificed with a high dose of anesthesia. Then, the amounts of malondialdehyde (MDA) and total glutathione (tGSH) were determined in the removed oropharyngeal tissues. Interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) gene expressions were measured, and all the tissues were studied histopathologically. Results. The amount of MDA was significantly increased in the MTXG group compared to the HREM, HREG, and HG groups (P<0.001). MTX significantly decreased the amount of tGSH in the MTXG group compared to the HREM, HREG, and HG groups (P<0.001). In this study, there were no visible ulcers in the animal group in which the levels of MDA, IL-1β, and TNF-α were high and the level of tGSH was low. However, histopathologic examination revealed mucin pools in wide areas due to ruptured oropharynx glands, and proliferated, dilated, and congested blood vessels and dilated ductal structures in some areas. Conclusion. HRE protected oropharyngeal oxidative damage induced by MTX. As an inexpensive and natural product, HRE has important advantages in the prevention of oropharyngeal damage induced by MTX.

Objectives: 8-Hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine is a biomolecule associated with DNA damage. We evaluated oxidative stress and DNA damage in patients with laryngeal cancer by measuring 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine levels. Methods: This study enrolled 117 subjects, including 64 controls and 53 patients who had benign vocal cord lesions or laryngeal cancer. The benign excised lesions, tumor tissue, noncancerous laryngeal tissue, blood, and urine were subjected to high-performance liquid chromatography, and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine levels were compared between groups. Results: Blood and urine 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine levels in patients with laryngeal carcinoma were significantly higher than in the controls (P =.00002, P =.00001). The 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine level was significantly higher in tumor tissues than in non-tumor tissue and benign vocal cord lesion tissues (P =.00002, P =.000001). Conclusions: We determined that laryngeal cancer was associated with oxidative stress, which may be quantified by measuring 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine. For a patient with a suspicious laryngeal lesion, 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine levels in blood and urine can provide advance information about the likely diagnosis.

Interleukin-33 (IL-33) is a novel cytokine involved in diabetes mellitus (DM) but its role in diabetic ovarian injury is unknown. As IL-33 is modulated by apoptosis, we aimed at investigating the effect of diabetes on ovaries in terms of evaluating apoptosis and IL-33 in a rat model. In this prospective experimental study, 16 female, nonpregnant Sprague–Dawley albino rats (12 weeks, 220–240 g) were randomly divided into two groups. Group 1 included eight healthy nondiabetic rats as controls and group 2 included eight rats in which diabetes was induced by intraperitoneal (i.p) injection of streptozotocin (STZ). After overt DM occurred (blood glucose >400 mgr/dl), all animals were euthanized and blood samples were collected by cardiac puncture for biochemical analysis. Bilateral oophorectomy was performed for histopathological examination. Serum levels of IL-33 and ovarian IL-33 and caspase-3 immunoexpressions were assessed. Immunoexpressions of caspase-3 and IL-33 were significantly higher in ovarian stromal cells of the diabetic rats compared to the controls. Also, in diabetic group, serum IL33 levels were significantly higher than the control group. In conclusion, increased IL-33 was observed both in serum and ovaries of STZ-induced diabetic rats as well as increased apoptosis in these diabetic rats. IL-33 may contribute to the apoptosis in diabetic ovarian injury.
- Derleme MakaleYalnız künye2017How coffee affects metabolic syndrome and its components
Baspinar, B.; Eskici, G.; Ozcelik, A.O.
Metabolic syndrome, with its increasing prevalence, is becoming a major public health problem throughout the world. Many risk factors including nutrition play a role in the emergence of metabolic syndrome. Of the most-consumed beverages in the world, coffee contains more than 1000 components such as caffeine, chlorogenic acid, diterpenes and trigonelline. It has been proven in many studies that coffee consumption has a positive effect on chronic diseases. In this review, starting from the beneficial effects of coffee on health, the relationship between coffee consumption and metabolic syndrome and its components has been investigated. There are few studies investigating the relationship between coffee and metabolic syndrome, and the existing ones put forward different findings. The factors leading to the differences are thought to stem from coffee variety, the physiological effects of coffee elements, and the nutritional ingredients (such as milk and sugar) added to coffee. It is reported that consumption of coffee in adults up to three cups a day reduces the risk of Type-2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome.

Cisplatin-based chemotherapy is responsible for a large number of renal failures, and it is still associated with high rates of mortality today. Oleuropein (OLE) presents a plethora of pharmacological beneficial properties. In this study we investigated whether OLE could provide sufficient protection against cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity. With this aim, Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into eight groups: control; 7 mg/kg/d cisplatin, 50 mg/kg, 100 mg/kg, and 200 mg/kg OLE; and treatment with OLE for 3 days starting at 24 hours following cisplatin injection. After exposure to the chemotherapy agent and OLE, oxidative DNA damage was quantitated in the renal tissue of experimental animals by measuring the amount of 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) adducts. Malondialdehyde (MDA) level, total oxidative stress (TOS), and total antioxidant status (TAS) were assessed to determine the oxidative injury in kidney cells. The histology of the kidney was examined using four different staining methods: hematoxylin-eosin (H&E), periodic acid Schiff (PAS), Masson trichrome, and amyloid. In addition, the blood urea nitrogen (BUN), uric acid (UA), and creatinine (CRE) levels were established. Our experimental data showed that tissue 8-OHdG levels were significantly higher in the cisplatin group when compared to the control group. The glomerular cells were sensitive to cisplatin as tubular cells. In addition, treatment with cisplatin elevated the levels of BUN, UA, CRE, and TOS, but lowered the level of TAS compared to the control group. The OLE therapy modulated oxidative stress in order to restore normal kidney function and reduced the formation of 8-OHdG induced by cisplatin. Furthermore, the OLE treatment significantly reduced pathological findings in renal tissue. We demonstrate for the first time that OLE presents significant cytoprotective properties against cisplatin-induced genotoxicity by restoring the antioxidant system of the renal tissue. According to our findings, OLE is a promising novel natural source for the prevention of serious kidney damage in current chemotherapies.

The most adopted Temporary-abdominal-closure systems were the commercial negative pressure ones (44.2%). During OA 38% of patients had complications; among them 10.5% had fistula. Definitive closure: 82.8%; Mortality during treatment: 17.2%. Mean duration of OA: 5.39(±4.83) days; Mean number of dressing changes: 0.88(±0.88). After-closure complications: (49.5%) and Mortality: (9%). No significant associations among TACT, indications, mortality, complications and fistula. A linear correlationexists between days of OA and complications (Pearson linear correlation = 0.326 p<0.0001) and with the fistula development (Pearson = 0.146 p= 0.016). Pediatric patients: 33 patients. Mean age: 5.91±(3.68) years; 60% male. Mortality: 3.4%; Complications: 44.8%; Fistula: 3.4%. Mean duration of OA: 3.22(±3.09) days. Conclusion: Temporary abdominal closure is reliable and safe. The different techniques account for different results according to the different indications. In peritonitis commercial negative pressure temporary closure seems to improve results. In trauma skin-closure and Bogotà-bag seem to improve results. Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT02382770
- MakaleYalnız künye2017Neutrophil-Lymphocyte ratio and Platelet-Lymphocyte ratio as useful predictive markers of prediabetes and diabetes mellitus
Mertoglu, Cuma; Gunay, Murat
Aims Chronic inflammation plays a central role in the development and progression of diabetes, and in the pathogenesis of its complications. The neutrophil–lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet–lymphocyte ratio (PLR) are indicators of subclinical inflammation. Mean platelet volume (MPV) is one of the platelet function indices. We investigated the association of NLR, PLR and MPV with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes mellitus and determine whether or not these are reliable markers for diagnosis. Materials and methods Participants were divided into four groups; 1: normal glucose tolerance, 2: impaired glucose tolerance (prediabetic), 3: newly diagnosed diabetic by OGTT. 4: group is previously diagnosed diabetic without complication. Outcomes were compared between groups. Results There are significant differences between all groups in NLR (p = 0.004) and PLR (p = 0.021) values. NLR values are significantly higher in prediabetic (1.60 ± 0.85), firstly diagnosed diabetic (1.58 ± 0.78) and clear diabetic (2.07 ± 0.95) groups compared to normal group (1.37 ± 0.69) (mean, SD). PLR values are significantly lower in prediabetic (90.35 ± 44.34) and firstly diagnosed diabetic (86.38 ± 45.24) groups compared to normal group (100.55 ± 48.14) but significantly higher in clear diabetic group (122.45 ± 37.43). There are no significant differences between all groups in MPV values. Conclusion Inflammation marker NLR significantly increases in prediabetic and diabetic patients. PLR significantly decreases in prediabetes and early stages of diabetes but increases in later stages. NLR and PLR values may be reliable predictive markers in prediabetes and diabetes mellitus.

Aim: To compare the effects of propofol and midazolam on markers of myocardial homogeneity when used during anesthesia induction in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting. Material and Method: A total of 50 patients with normal left ventricular systolic function and normal electrocardiogram were randomized into two groups as to receive propofol Group 1 (n=25, mean age: 68.28±10.44) or midazolam (n=25, mean age: 67.88±8.90) during induction of anesthesia. Standard 12-lead electrocardiograms were obtained just before induction of anesthesia to ensure baseline compara-bility of two groups. Patients were monitored with an ambulatory electrocardiogram before and after surgery, and individual average QT duration, QTc duration, P dispersion and QT dispersion were calculated. Results: Dis-tribution of baseline characteristics were similar between two groups. Two groups were also similar regarding preoperative QT duration, QTc duration, QT dispersion and p-wave dispersion. Mean of individual average QT duration, QTc duration, and P dispersion did not differ significantly between two groups whereas mean of individual average QT dispersion was significantly higher in propofol group than that in midazolam group in the postoperative period (32.80±13.07 vs. 24.60±9.34, in Group 1 and 2, respectively, p=0.01). Discussion: Midazolam seems to have minimal effect on the electrical stabil-ity of the myocardium, whereas propofol is likely to limit recovery of myocardial homogeneity after CABG to some extent when used during induction of anesthesia.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2017Predictive factors for early hospital readmission and 1-year mortality in elder patients following surgical treatment of a hip fracture; [Cerrahi olarak tedavi edilmiş ileri yaş kalça kırığı hastalarında taburculuk sonrası erken dönem hastane başvurusu ve bir yıllık mortalitenin belirleyici faktörleri]

BACKGROUND: Early hospital readmission after surgically treated hip fracture is a common entity, often involving an adverse event and causing strains on an already overburdened healthcare system. The main purposes of the present study were to determine the 30-day readmission rate, analyze the predictive factors for early hospital readmissions, and assess 1-year mortality following surgical treatment of hip fracture in elderly patients. Retrospective case-control study. METHODS: In total, 517 patients with a mean age of 74 years were evaluated. The rate of early readmission, age, gender, body mass index, fracture type, pre-fracture mobility status, preoperative time to surgery, American Society of Anesthesiologists score, implant type, postoperative intensive care unit stay, total length of postoperative hospital stay, comorbidities, and the main reasons for readmission were the criteria for data collection. Multivariate analysis was performed to determine the main predictors of early hospital readmission. Mortality within the first year after surgery was also assessed. RESULTS: A higher prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cardiac arrhythmia or ischemic heart disease, diabetes, and dementia or Parkinson’s disease was detected in readmitted patients. Advanced age, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) grade ≥3, postoperative intensive care unit (ICU) stay, and pre-existing cardiac arrhythmia or ischemic heart disease were identified as the main predictors. The 1-year mortality rate for the readmitted group was 53.9%, whereas it was 24% for those patients who were not readmitted. CONCLUSION: The readmission rate following surgical treatment of hip fracture in elder patients was 12%, and its main predictive factors were advanced age, ASA grade ≥3, postoperative ICU stay, and pre-existing cardiac arrhythmia or ischemic heart disease. Hospital readmission within the first 30-day period following initial discharge was significantly correlated with an increased 1-year mortality rate.

Aims: In this study, we aim to evaluate the left atrial global longitudinal strain (LAGLS), total atrial conduction time (TACT) and left ventricle (LV) functions in recently diagnosed pulmonary sarcoidosis (PS) patients. Method: Fifty recently diagnosed PS patients (group 1) and a control group of 50 healthy individuals (group 2) were evaluated in the study. Two-dimensional echocardiography images were obtained from LV apical 4-chamber (4C), long-axis (L) and 2-chamber (2C) views. Peak longitudinal strain and strain rate (SR) were obtained from 4C, L and 2C views. Mean values of the three views were calculated. LV global longitudinal strain and LV-SR torsion were determined as the net differences in the mean rotation between the apical and basal levels. LAGLS and TACT values were calculated. Results: The study found that LAGLS was significantly lower in group 1 than in group 2 (P < 0.05). TACT was also significantly longer in group 1 than in group 2 (respectively group 1: 111.6 ± 15.1 ms; group 2: 103.4 ± 5.8 ms, P < 0.001). There was a significant moderate negative correlation between LAGLS and TACT (r = −0.36, P < 0.05). Patients with sarcoidosis had significantly lower LV longitudinal strain and SR measurements than the control group. Although LV basal rotation (LVR) values were similar in both groups, LVR-apical and LV-torsion (LVTR) values were significantly higher in the patient group (group 1). Conclusion: The identification of left atrial and left ventricular myocardial deformation using speckle tracking echocardiography in patients with PS allows subclinical LV dysfunction and subclinical electrophysiologic changes to be detected earlier.

There was a significant association between RNase 5 and histological differentiation in colon adenocarcinomas (p<0.05). There was no association between RNase 5 and Necl 4 in gastric or colon adenocarcinomas. Conclusions: Necl 4 may have prognostic value in colon adenocarcinomas, but it is difficult to ascertain in gastric adenocarcinomas.
- MakaleYalnız künye2017Significance of serum endothelial cell specific Molecule-1 (Endocan) level in patients with erectile Dysfunction: A pilot study
Karabakan, M.; Bozkurt, A.; Akdemir, S.; Gunay, M.; Keskin, E.
This study aimed to measure the serum endocan level of patients with erectile dysfunction (ED) and to investigate the possible association between the Endothelial-specific molecule-1 (Endocan) level and ED. Twenty healthy and sixty-four male patients included in the study were divided into four groups: Severe ED (19 patients), moderate ED (24 patients), mild ED (21 patients) and control group (20 healthy men). The erectile function of all the patients was evaluated using the International Index of Erectile Function-5 (IIEF-5) questionnaire. The body mass index (BMI) of each participant was determined, together with levels of fasting blood glucose, total testosterone, low- A nd high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglyceride and endocan in serum samples. No significant difference was found between the three ED groups and the control group in terms of the mean age, BMI and the levels of cholesterol and fasting blood glucose (P>0.05). The mean serum endocan level was found to 1.076 ± 0.5, 0.674 ± 0.40 and 0.671 ± 0.3 ng ml-1 in the severe, moderate and mild ED groups, respectively. This indicated that the highest value was obtained from the severe ED group, and the difference between the severe ED group and the other groups was statistically significant. In the control group, the serum endocan level was 0.73 ± 0.46 ng ml-1, which was significantly higher compared to the moderate and mild ED groups (P<0.05). The significant difference between the control and ED groups in terms of the serum endocan level can assist in the evaluation of endothelial pathologies in the etiology ED.

Background: Use of smokeless tobacco (ST) is increasing in many communities. We investigated whether ST alters the cytological and cytomorphometric features of buccal mucosa cells. Methods: Twenty male participants who had used Nicotiana rustica Linn.-containing ST (Maras powder) for at least 10 years, and 20 healthy male controls who did not use ST, were included in this study. After rinsing the mouth with water, samples were taken using a toothbrush from the buccal mucosa of subjects in both groups. Samples were gently spread over a glass slide. After applying a cytofixative spray, the Papanicolaou method was used to stain the slides. The presence of dysplasia, dyskeratosis, parakeratosis, hyperkeratosis, hypergranulosis, karyorrhexis, and pyknosis was evaluated by light microscopy, as were the increment amount of candida, cocco-bacillus, and Leptotrichia buccalis. Cytomorphometric analysis was performed and at least 20 cells with well-defined borders were evaluated from each slide, and the cellular diameter (CD), nuclear diameter (ND), and nucleus/cytoplasm (N/C) ratio of the cells were analyzed using a 60× objective. Results: Other than the presence of dysplasia and candida, all measured cytological parameters were significantly higher in the ST users than in the non-ST users. Furthermore, CD was lower while nuclear/cytoplasmic ratio was higher in the ST users than in those non-ST users. Conclusion: Cytological changes associated with the use of ST, include dyskeratosis, parakeratosis, hyperkeratosis, hypergranulosis, karyorrhexis, pyknosis together with increase in the bacterial population of cocco-bacillus and L. buccalis. There were no significant differences in patients with dysplasia in spite of reduction of CD, increased nuclear size and N/C ratio.

Owing to ever-increasing bacterial and fungal drug resistance, we attempted to develop novel antitubercular and antimicrobial agents. For this purpose, we developed some new fluorine-substituted chalcone analogs (3, 4, 9–15, and 20–23) using a structure–activity relationship approach. Target compounds were evaluated for their antitubercular efficacy against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv and antimicrobial activity against five common pathogenic bacterial and three common fungal strains. Three derivatives (3, 9, and 10) displayed significant antitubercular activity with IC50 values of ≤16,760. Compounds derived from trimethoxy substituent scaffolds with monofluoro substitution on the B ring of the chalcone structure exhibited superior inhibition activity compared to corresponding hydroxy analogs. In terms of antimicrobial activity, most compounds (3, 9, 12–14, and 23) exhibited moderate to potent activity against the bacteria, and the antifungal activities of compounds 3, 13, 15, 20, and 22 were comparable to those of reference drugs ampicillin and fluconazole.

Significant mitral regurgitation (MR) is thought to decrease after left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation, and therefore repair of mitral valve is not indicated in current practice. However, residual moderate and severe MR leads to pulmonary artery pressure increase, thereby resulting in right ventricular (RV) dysfunction during follow-up. We examined the impact of residual MR on systolic function of the right ventricle by echocardiography after LVAD implantation. This study included 90 patients (mean age: 51.7 ± 10.9 years, 14.4% female) who underwent LVAD implantation (HeartMate II = 21, HeartWare = 69) in a single center between December 2010 and June 2014. Echocardiograms obtained at 3–6 months and over after implantation were analyzed retrospectively. RV systolic function was graded as normal, mild, moderate, and severely depressed. MR (≥moderate) was observed in 43 and 44% of patients at early and late period, respectively. Systolic function of the RV was severely depressed in 16 and 9% of all patients. Initial analysis (mean duration of support 174.3 ± 42.5 days) showed a statistically significant correlation between less MR and improved systolic function of RV (P = 0.01). Secondary echocardiographic analysis (following a mean duration of support of 435.1 ± 203 days) was also statistically significant for MR degree and RV systolic dysfunction (P = 0.008). Residual MR after LVAD implantation may cause deterioration of RV systolic function and cause right-sided heart failure symptoms. Repair of severe MR, in selected patients such as those with severe pulmonary hypertension and depressed RV, may be considered to improve the patient's clinical course during pump support.

The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical results of two-stage revision total knee arthroplasty using a teicoplanin-impregnated cement spacer for infected primary total knee replacements. Twenty-five patients operated between 2005 and 2012 were included in this study. At the clinical status analysis, rate of infection eradication was assessed, physical examination was performed, Knee Society Score (KSS) was noted, isolated microorganisms were recorded, and the radiographic evaluation was performed. The mean KSS improved from 40 (range, 25-69) preoperatively to 77 (range, 32-96) at the latest follow-up (p < 0.05). Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis was isolated in 9 of 25 patients as the most frequently isolated pathogen, and the other isolated pathogens were methicillin-susceptible S. epidermidis, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, and methicillin-susceptible S. aureus. Infection was successfully eradicated in 24 of 25 patients. Two-stage revision of the infected primary knee replacement is a time-consuming but a reliable procedure with high rates of success. Teicoplanin was found to be an effective choice for antibiotic-impregnated cement spacer applied for the eradication of the infection.
