Parisi, Amilcare; Reim, Daniel; Borghi, Felice; Nguyen, Ninh T.; Qi, Feng; Coratti, Andrea; Cianchi, Fabio; Cesari, Maurizio; Bazzocchi, Francesca; Alimoglu, Orhan

AIM To investigate the role of minimally invasive surgery for gastric cancer and determine surgical, clinical, and oncological outcomes. METHODS This is a propensity score-matched case-control study, comparing three treatment arms: robotic gastrectomy (RG), laparoscopic gastrectomy (LG), open gastrectomy (OG). Data collection started after sharing a specific study protocol. Data were recorded through a tailored and protected web-based system. Primary outcomes: harvested lymph nodes, estimated blood loss, hospital stay, complications rate. Among the secondary outcomes, there are: operative time, R0 resections, POD of mobilization, POD of starting liquid diet and soft solid diet. The analysis includes the evaluation of type and grade of postoperative complications. Detailed information of anastomotic leakages is also provided. RESULTS The present analysis was carried out of 1026 gastrectomies. To guarantee homogenous distribution of cases, patients in the RG, LG and OG groups were 1:1:2 matched using a propensity score analysis with a caliper = 0.2. The successful matching resulted in a total sample of 604 patients (RG = 151; LG = 151; OG = 302). The three groups showed no differences in all baseline patients characteristics, type of surgery (P = 0.42) and stage of the disease (P = 0.16). Intraoperative blood loss was significantly lower in the LG (95.93 ± 119.22) and RG (117.91 ± 68.11) groups compared to the OG (127.26 ± 79.50, P = 0.002). The mean number of retrieved lymph nodes was similar between the RG (27.78 ± 11.45), LG (24.58 ± 13.56) and OG (25.82 ± 12.07) approach. A benefit in favor of the minimally invasive approaches was found in the length of hospital stay (P < 0.0001). A similar complications rate was found (P = 0.13). The leakage rate was not different (P = 0.78) between groups. CONCLUSION Laparoscopic and robotic surgery can be safely performed and proposed as possible alternative to open surgery. The main highlighted benefit is a faster postoperative functional recovery.

Objective: To compare the effect of two different corticosteroid types in bilateral and symmetrical knee osteoarthritis (OA). Methods: One hundred and twenty-six patients received injections of methylprednisolone acetate (MP) in one knee and triamcinolone hexacetonide (TH) in the contralateral knee. Patients were evaluated before injection and 2, 4, 8, 12, and 24 weeks after. Results: Mean patient age was 68.5±9 years. Mean BMI was 26.3±2.6 kg/m2. At first admission, mean VAS score was 7.7±1.3 for the right side and 7.5±1.5 for the left side, and mean WOMAC score was 67.6±14.4. After bilateral intra-articular injection, VAS scores for both knees and WOMAC scores decreased significantly when initial scores were compared with 2, 4, 8, 12, and 24 weeks after injection (p < 0.05). A statistically significant change was seen over time when VAS and WOMAC scores for 2, 4, 8, 12, and 24 weeks post-injection were compared to each other (p < 0.05). No significant difference was seen between knee sides (p > 0.05). Conclusion: MP and TH have similar efficacy in relieving pain and improving function. The efficacy of intra-articular corticosteroid injection peaks 2 weeks after injection and the effect continues until the 24th week. Level of Evidence II, Comparative Prospective Study.

Bozkurt, İlyas; Dilek, Esra; Erol, Hüseyin Serkan; Çakir, Ahmet; Hamzaoğlu, Ergin; Koç, Murat; Keleş, Osman Nuri; Halici, Mesut Bünyami

Previously, water extract of Maclura pomifera plant has been found effective on gastric damage. In this study, pomiferin product was purified from this plant by thin-layer chromatography method and its structure was elucidated by nuclear magnetic resonance methods. Its antiulcer effect was investigated on indomethacin-induced gastric damage in rats. For this study, a total of 36 Sprague Dawley female rats were divided into six groups such as healthy, control, reference, and three treatment groups (n = 6 each). Ranitidine (Ulcuran® 25 mg/ml vial) was used as reference. Biochemically, lipid peroxidation, and glutathione levels as well as superoxide dismutase, catalase, myeloperoxidase, and cyclooxygenase isoenzymes activities were measured in stomach tissues. Comparing with healthy group, ulcerative area was observed in control group (only administered to indomethacin group). However, Ulcerative area in stomach tissues of rats administered of all doses of pomiferin and ranitidine showed significant decrease (p < 0.05). Also, there were significant changes at the antioxidant levels (lipid peroxidation, glutathione, superoxide dismutase, and catalase) and some important enzyme activities (myeloperoxidase, cyclooxygenase isoenzymes). We found that pomiferin was effective on gastric damage induced by indomethacin. This effect was thought to be caused by positive changes in the antioxidant system.

Sartelli, Massimo; Labricciosa, Francesco M.; Barbadoro, Pamela; Pagani, Leonardo; Ansaloni, Luca; Brink, Adrian J.; Carlet, Jean; Khanna, Ashish; Chichom-Mefire, Alain; Coccolini, Federico

Background: Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs (ASPs) have been promoted to optimize antimicrobial usage and patient outcomes, and to reduce the emergence of antimicrobial-resistant organisms. However, the best strategies for an ASP are not definitively established and are likely to vary based on local culture, policy, and routine clinical practice, and probably limited resources in middle-income countries. The aim of this study is to evaluate structures and resources of antimicrobial stewardship teams (ASTs) in surgical departments from different regions of the world. Methods: A cross-sectional web-based survey was conducted in 2016 on 173 physicians who participated in the AGORA (Antimicrobials: A Global Alliance for Optimizing their Rational Use in Intra-Abdominal Infections) project and on 658 international experts in the fields of ASPs, infection control, and infections in surgery. Results: The response rate was 19.4%. One hundred fifty-six (98.7%) participants stated their hospital had a multidisciplinary AST. The median number of physicians working inside the team was five [interquartile range 4-6]. An infectious disease specialist, a microbiologist and an infection control specialist were, respectively, present in 80.1, 76.3, and 67.9% of the ASTs. A surgeon was a component in 59.0% of cases and was significantly more likely to be present in university hospitals (89.5%, p < 0.05) compared to community teaching (83.3%) and community hospitals (66.7%). Protocols for pre-operative prophylaxis and for antimicrobial treatment of surgical infections were respectively implemented in 96.2 and 82.3% of the hospitals. The majority of the surgical departments implemented both persuasive and restrictive interventions (72.8%). The most common types of interventions in surgical departments were dissemination of educational materials (62.5%), expert approval (61.0%), audit and feedback (55.1%), educational outreach (53.7%), and compulsory order forms (51.5%). Conclusion: The survey showed a heterogeneous organization of ASPs worldwide, demonstrating the necessity of a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach in the battle against antimicrobial resistance in surgical infections, and the importance of educational efforts towards this goal.

Chronic total occlusion (CTO) is a common finding in 40% of the patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD). The aim of this study was to investigate the determinants of CTO in patients with PAD. The study included a total of 211 nonanemic patients with PAD. All patients were categorized according to the Fontaine classification. In lower extremity angiography cohorts, CTO- patients were designated as group 1 and CTO+ patients were designated as group 2. Patients with CTO had significantly higher red cell distribution width (RDW), neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio, uric acid, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein compared to patients without CTO (P ≤.001, P =.036, P ≤.001, and P =.015, respectively). Albumin, total bilirubin, and direct bilirubin were significantly lower in the patients with CTO compared to patients without CTO (P =.023, P ≤.001, and P =.049, respectively). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that RDW, uric acid, and total bilirubin were independent predictors of CTO in patients with PAD. We demonstrated that increased RDW and uric acid levels and lower total bilirubin values were independently associated with CTO in patients with PAD.

Lesser tuberosity cysts and their relationship with subscapularis tears and subcoracoid impingement

Cetinkaya, Mehmet; Öner, Ali Yusuf; Ataoglu, Muhammet Baybars; Ozer, Mustafa; Ayanoglu, Tacettin; Kanatli, Ulunay

Background We aimed to evaluate cysts in the lesser tuberosity of humeral head seen on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and their relationship with subcoracoid impingement and subscapularis tears evident on arthroscopic surgery videos. Our hypothesis was that the cysts would be more frequent with subscapularis tears and in the case of subcoracoid impingement. Methods Patients who underwent shoulder arthroscopy between January 2010 and January 2016 were retrieved to evaluate subscapularis tears on surgery videos and lesser tuberosity cysts (LTC), coracohumeral distances (CHD) on both sagittal oblique and transverse sections of MRI retrospectively. There were 137 patients meeting the study criteria with subscapularis tear evident on surgery video and having preoperatively studied magnetic resonance images. All the tears were classified according to the Lafosse's system. The control group was constituted with 121 patients who underwent shoulder arthroscopy and were diagnosed with no subscapularis tear. Then, any statistically significant relationship between these parameters was investigated by the use of statistics software. Results The mean age (57), gender distribution (female for 67.1%), and involved shoulder (right for 62.8%) rate of the groups were statistically similar. The existence rate of LTC was 55.5% and 19% for the study and control groups, respectively (P = .000). The study group was then evaluated in two groups regarding the existence of a cyst in the lesser tuberosity. There was no statistical difference between these two groups in terms of coracohumeral distances and tear type (P > .05). The study group was also divided into two depending on the transverse section CHD whether it was under 7 mm or not. There was still no statistical difference between these subgroups in terms of a cyst existence (P > .05). The supraspinatus tear rate and age distribution was also not differing in patients with and without LTC. Conclusions The LTCs were significantly associated with subscapularis tears, and could be used as an indicator in the interpretation of MRI scans. However, there was no relationship between the subcoracoid impingement and LTCs.

Children’s eating habits and obesity while watching television

    Arikan, Duygu; Bekar, Pınar

Objectives: The current study aimed to examine the effect of eating habit of children while watching TV on obesity. Methods: The population of this descriptive study consisted of the mothers with children in the age group of three to five years, who referred to five family health centers from June to July 2015. No sampling selection was performed in the study. The study was conducted on 165 mothers, who agreed to participate in the study and their children. The data were collected with the face-toface interview method and using a form including questions related to the socio-demographic characteristics of the mothers and children as well as the condition of children watching TV and their nutritional status. After measuring the weight and height of the children by a digital scale and a standard assessment tool by researchers, their body mass index (BMI) was calculated. Before collection of the data, the approval of the ethics committee, verbal permission from the parents and a formal written permission from the related institution were obtained. Percentage, mean and Chi-square tests were used to assess the data. Results: According to the obtained results, 33.9% of the children were five years old and 52.7% were male. According to classification of BMI, 9.7% of the children were very slim, 12.7% slim, 58.8% normal, 8.5% over-weight and 10.3% obese. It was determined that 58.2% of the children ate while watching TV and 34.4% of those ate their meals once a day while watching TV. Conclusions: It was found that more than half of the children watched TV while eating. It is suggested that nurses inform the parents about the harms of having their children eat while watching TV as well as obesity.

Outcomes of long term treatments of type I hereditary angioedema in a Turkish family

Akoglu, Gulsen; Yildiz, Gokhan; Kesim, Belgin; Metin, Ahmet

Background: Hereditary angioedema is a rare autosomal dominantly inherited immunodeficiency disorder characterized by potentially life-threatening angioedema attacks. Objective: We aimed to investigate the clinical and genetic features of a family with angioedema attacks. Methods: The medical history, clinical features and C1-INH gene mutation of a Turkish family were investigated and outcomes of long-term treatments were described. Results: Five members had experienced recurrent swellings on the face and extremities triggered by trauma. They were all misdiagnosed as familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) depending on frequent abdominal pain and were on colchicine therapy for a long time. They had low C4 and C1-INH protein concentrations and functions. A mutation (c.1247T>A) in C1-INH gene was detected. They were diagnosed as having hereditary angioedema with C1-INH deficiency (C1-INH hereditary angioedema) for the first time. Three of them benefited from danazol treatment without any significant adverse events and one received weekly C1 esterase replacement treatment instead of danazol since she had a medical history of thromboembolic stroke. Study limitations: Small sample size of participants. Conclusion: Patients with C1-INH hereditary angioedema may be misdiagnosed as having familial Mediterranean fever in regions where the disorder is endemic. Medical history, suspicion of hereditary angioedema and laboratory evaluations of patients and their family members lead the correct diagnoses of hereditary angioedema. Danazol and C1 replacement treatments provide significant reduction in hereditary angioedema attacks.

Metalloproteinases and Their Inhibitors in Patients with Inguinal Hernia

Isik, Arda; Gursul, Cebrail; Peker, Kemal; Aydın, Merve; Fırat, Deniz; Yılmaz, İsmayil

Aim: The aim of this prospective study is to investigate if there is a relationship between inguinal hernia, matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs). Materials and methods: This case control study was performed on patients admitted to the general surgery department of Erzincan University Hospital. Four groups were created: control, indirect hernia, direct hernia, and bilateral hernia. All groups were comprised of 11 patients. Serum and tissue levels of MMP-1, MMP-2, MMP-9, MMP-13, TIMP-1, TIMP-2, TIMP-3, and hydroxyproline were evaluated. Results: MMPs values were significantly high at hernia groups, especially at bilateral hernia group (p < 0.05), whereas TIMPs values were significantly low at bilateral hernia group (p < 0.05). MMPs values were increasing at hernia groups in an order as control, indirect, direct, and bilateral. TIMPs values were decreasing at hernia groups in an order as control, indirect, direct, and bilateral. Conclusion: Increased levels of MMP-1-2-9-13 and decreased levels of TIMP-1-2-3 may have played role in the formation of inguinal hernia. Hernia is not only a local defect, but a reflection of systemic disease. This is even more significant for bilateral hernias.

Is talon tibial intramedullary nailing clinically superior compared to conventional locked nailing?

Çamurcu, Yalkin; Sofu, Hakan; Issin, Ahmet; Koçkara, Nizamettin; Genç, Erdinç; Çetinkaya, Mehmet

Objectives: This study aims to compare the results of talon tibial intramedullary (IM) nailing with the results of conventional distal locked tibial IM nailing. Patients and methods: The study included 60 patients (37 males, 23 females; mean age 42.2 years; range 18 to 92 years) who underwent tibial IM nailing with the diagnosis of unilateral, closed or open (Gustilo-Anderson type 1) tibial diaphyseal fracture (Orthopaedic Trauma Association 42) between January 2013 and January 2016. Patients were separated into two groups as talon tibial IM nailing group (group 1, n=30) and distal locked tibial IM nailing group (group 2, n=30). All patients' operative and total radiation exposure times were recorded. At last control, American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society and Tegner Lysholm scores were evaluated for clinical outcomes. All complications were recorded. Results: Mean operative time was 43.8 minutes in group 1 and 50.2 minutes in group 2. Mean radiation exposure time in group 1 was 5.4 minutes, which was three times shorter than the time of group 2, which was 17.5 minutes. Mean time until union was 16.9 weeks in group 1 and 12.2 weeks in group 2. Statistically significant differences were present between two groups in operative, radiation exposure time and time until union (p=0.019, p=0.001, p=0.001, respectively). When American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society and Tegner Lysholm scores were compared, there were no statistically significant differences (p=0.951 and p=0.896). Conclusion: Talon tibial IM nailing is an easier and safer alternative to conventional distal locked tibial IM nailing with shorter operative and radiation exposure times. However, it should be kept in mind that the time until radiographic union may be longer compared to conventional tibial IM nailing.

The relationship between myocardial bridge and electrocardiographic Tp-e interval, Tp-e/QT and Tp-e/ QTc ratio; [Elektrokardiyografik Tp-e İntervali, Tp-e/QT ve Tp-e/QTc oranı ile miyokardiyal bridge arasındaki İlişki]

Yıldırım, Erkan; İpek, Emrah; Kalkan, Kamuran; Öztürk, Mustafa; Cengiz, Mahir; Hamur, Hikmet

Aim: Myocardial bridge (MB) is generally known as an asymptomatic and benign anomaly, however, it can cause serious clinical conditions such as exercise-induced ventricular tachycardia and sudden death. Tp-e interval is the distance between the peak and the end of the T wave in electrocardiography. Tp-e/QT and Tp-e/QTc ratios are used as electrocardiographic indicators of ventricular arrhythmias. We have studied the effect of coronary angiographic features (the degree of stenosis and length of MB) of MB on myocardial repolarization parameters. Methods: The study group consisted of 53 patients with isolated MB and 58 patients with normal coronary arteries. Results: The QT interval and QTc were similar between the groups, however, Tp-e interval (92.72±14.72 and 79.59±12.12, respectively; p<0.001) and Tp-e/QT (0.24±0.041 and 0.21±0.025, respectively; p<0.001) and Tp-e/QTc (0.22±0.037 and 0.19±0.025, respectively; p<0.001) ratios were found to be significantly increased in MB group compared to the control group. In the comparison of the MB patients with critical and those with noncritical stenosis, Tp-e interval (100.69±10.79, 80.57±11.25, respectively; p<0.001) and Tp-e/QT (0.266±0.033, 0.219±0.037, respectively; p<0.001) and Tp-e/QTc (0.244±0.029, 0.196±0.027, respectively; p<0.001) ratios were higher in the MB with critical stenosis group. Conclusion: Our results indicate that these parameters can be practical ECG markers of ventricular arrhythmias in patients with MB.

Investigation of photobiomodulation potentiality by 635 and 809 nm lasers on human osteoblasts

Bölükbaşı Ateş, Gamze; Ak Can, Ayşe; Gülsoy, Murat

Photobiomodulation (PBM) describes light-induced photochemical reactions achieved by the application of red or near infrared lasers/LED light with low energy densities. This noninvasive and painless method has been used in some clinical areas but controversial outcomes demand a skeptical look for its promising and potential effects. In this detailed in vitro study, the osteoblast cells were irradiated with 635 and 809 nm diode lasers at energy densities of 0.5, 1, and 2 J/cm2. Cell viability, proliferation, bone formation, and osteoblast differentiation were evaluated by methylthiazole tetrazolium (MTT) assay, Alamar Blue assay, acridine orange/propidium iodide staining, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, Alizarin red staining, and reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) to test the expression of collagen type I, ALPL, and osteocalcin. The results indicate that studied energy doses have a transient effect (48 h after laser irradiation) on the osteoblast viability and proliferation. Similarly, laser irradiation did not appear to have any effect on ALP activity. These results were confirmed by RT-PCR analysis of osteoblast markers. This study suggests that several irradiation parameters and variations in the methods should be clearly established in the laboratory before laser treatment becomes a postulated application for bone tissue regeneration in clinical level.

Protective effects of coenzyme Q10 and resveratrol on oxidative stress induced by various dioxins on transheterozigot larvae of: Drosophila melanogaster

    Çolak, Deniz Altun; Uysal, Handan

Dioxin and dioxin-like compounds are known as a class of highly toxic and persistent environmental contaminants threatening human and animal health. In the present study, the protective effects of Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) and Resveratrol (RSV) against 2,3,7,8-TCDD, 1,2,3,7,8-PeCDD, 1,2,3,7,8,9-HxCDD, and 1,2,3,4,6,7,8,9-OCDD induced acute toxicity and measurement of oxidative stress were studied. Lethal doses of these chemicals were determined. Transheterozigot larvae of Drosophila melanogaster were treated using either dioxins (10 × 10-7 μg mL-1) or dioxins + CoQ10 (10 × 10-7 μg mL-1 + 150 μg mL-1) and dioxins + RSV (10 × 10-7 μg mL-1 + 100 μM). After dioxin treatment, antioxidant combination therapy with dioxins and CoQ10 or dioxins and RSV resulted in indicators of acute toxicity including a decrease in total oxidant status as compared to dioxins alone (p < 0.05). The combination treatment also produced a significant increase in total antioxidant status as compared to dioxins only (p < 0.05). Results indicate a potential role of dioxins for oxidative stress with acute toxicity and the protective performance of CoQ10 and RSV in the overall toxicity of dioxins including measuring oxidative stress.

Oxidative and antioxidative status in the endometrium of patients with benign gynecological disorders

    Nayki, C.; Nayki, U.; Gunay, M.; Kulhan, M.; Çankaya, M.; Humeyra Taskın Kafa, A.; Balci, G.

Aim Oxidative stress and impaired antioxidative system are implicated in the development of many disease states including gynecological diseases. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the oxidative–antioxidative status in endometrium of patients diagnosed with benign gynecological disorders. Methods Samples of endometria and blood were obtained from 65 patients admitted to our center for abnormal uterine bleeding or postmenopausal bleeding. Endometrial biopsy was performed for the evaluation of histopathology and oxidative-antioxidative status in endometrial tissue. Based on histological examination, subjects were divided into groups as follows: normal controls (n = 15); patients with endometrial polyps (n = 20); patients with uterine myoma (n = 10) patients with chronic endometritis (n = 10), and patients with atrophic endometrium (n = 10). Activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione reductase (GR) and total antioxidant status (TOS), total oxidant status (TAS) were assessed. Results Compared to the normal controls, nonsignificant changes (decrease or increase) were detected in antioxidant enzyme activities, TAS and TOS in the examined groups. Additionally, between TAS and TOS, we also found a strong positive correlation in normal and chronic endomethritis groups and a moderate positive correlation uterine myoma, endometrial polyps and endometrial atrophy groups. Conclusion Even though, our results do not allow to conclude how oxidative and antioxidative status are influenced in benign gynecological disorders, these findings may provide a basis for the further researches.

The healing effect of cimin grape against toxic effects of ZnOTiO2 nanocomposite

    Atici, T.; Altun Çolak, D.

Today, occurrence of nanotechnology is making life easier, increasing the individual happiness and attracts attention to the benefits to be provided by it. As with any technology, nanotechnology also has risks, which are discussed here. In this study, toxic effects of ZnOTiO2 nanocomposite on various growth parameters of Drosophila melanogaster and removal of these effects by Cimin grape (Vitis vinifera L. ssp., Cimin) were investigated. For this purpose, assessment of the number of offspring and the survival rate were performed by feeding flies with ZnOTiO2 (1 mg/ml) and Cimin grape seed and fruit extracts (5 and 10 mg/ml). In the first stage, larvae of the the same age were put into the medium of each application group and the adult individuals were recorded. In the second stage, in order to determine the number of offspring in all treatment groups, in a set of experiments the grape extracts and ZnOTiO2 were only applied to the female members, while in another set of experiments, the grape extracts and ZnOTiO2 were applied only to male members, belonging to the same application group. The total number of flies developed from the eggs laid during ten days of pair mating was counted. As a result, survival rate and the offspring number in the application groups, that were only exposed to ZnOTiO2 were found to show a decline, compared with the other groups. At the same time, the values obtained from the groups, exposed to the ZnOTiO2 and grape extracts together, were close to control group values. This result supports the healing effects of Cimin grape, which is abundant in Erzincan.

We investigated the effect of spinal anesthesia combined with obturator nerve block (ONB) during the transurethral resection of lateral bladder wall tumors (TUR-BT) on the presence of detrusor muscle tissue in tumor specimens and on tumor recurrence. TUR-BT was performed on 96 patients with a lateral bladder wall tumor under spinal anesthesia in our clinic between January 2011 and December 2015. The patients were divided into two groups: 49 patients only received spinal anesthesia and 47 patients received spinal anesthesia combined with ONB. The groups were retrospectively compared in terms of adductor muscle contraction, bladder perforation, complete tumor resection, presence of muscle tissue in the pathology material, and recurrence rate during follow-up. The obturator reflex was significantly observed in the non-ONB group (p < 0.05). In the ONB group, the percentages of complete resection and detrusor muscle tissue were significantly higher (p = 0.003 and p = 0.001, respectively). The postoperative recurrence rate was found to be significantly higher in the non-ONB group than in the ONB group (p = 0.025). Spinal anesthesia combined with ONB during TUR-BT prevent obturator reflex and facilitate complete resection including detrusor muscle tissue, independent from the size or number of tumors, thus reducing the recurrence of the disease.

Four multicaulin and miltirone-like phenanthrene derivatives were synthesised and evaluated as antituberculosis agents. The crucial step of the synthesis was Pschorr coupling of 4-(3-isopropyl-4-methoxyphenyl)-2-(2-aminophenyl)ethane (13) to give 2-isopropyl-3-methoxy-9,10-dihydrophenanthrene (9) and 4-isopropyl-3-methoxy-9,10-dihydrophenanthrene (9a). Compound 9 was converted to multicaulin and miltirone-like phenanthrene derivatives by further reactions. The best antituberculosis activity was exhibited by 2-isopropylphenanthrene-3-ol (11).
