Sayar, Ilyas; Peker, Kemal; Kapisiz, Alparslan; Bostanci, Isil Esen; Gürbüzel, Mehmet; Isik, Arda; Peker, Necla Aydin
Background: Tumoral calcinosis is an uncommon condition associated with the deposition of painless calcific masses. It is more common in childhood or early adolescence of African-American females. Case Report: We present a case of a 4-year-old girl with tumoral calcinosis treated surgically. The case is rather rare in terms of the age of the patient and the localization of the masses (gluteal site). In our patient, the biochemical findings were normal, except for hyperphosphatemia and elevated alkaline phosphatase. Conclusions: Total excision appears to lead to a good clinical outcome and a low incidence of local relapse.

Introduction: The Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory-Revised (OCI-R) is a widely used self-report instrument developed to overcome the problems with the available instruments. The aim of this study was to assess the psychometric properties of the revised Obsessive Compulsive Inventory (OCI-R) in Turkish sample. Met hods: The psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory-Revised (OCI-R) were assessed in clinical samples (n=44 for patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and n=44 for patients with major depression (MD) and a non-clinical student sample (n=287). results: The confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated that the original six-factor structure was valid in the Turkish sample. The overall and each of the subscales showed moderate to good internal consistency and convergent validity as well as test-retest reliability. However, the Cronbach's alpha was excessively low for the hoarding subscale in the OCD group. The total and subscale scores of the OCI-R satisfied at discriminating patients with OCD from both patients with MD and healthy controls, with an exception of the neutralizing subscale. conclusion: The Turkish version of the OCI-R did not reveal sound psychometric properties. Findings are discussed in the light of current theoretical considerations.

Aim: Both LigaSure (LS) and Harmonic Scalpel (HS) are new surgical technologies that have been used to secure hemostasis in various fields of surgery. There is little information in the literature about the use of LS and HS in thyroid surgery. The aim of this study was to report our experience with LS and HS in thyroid surgery. Materials and methods: In this nonrandomized retrospective study 326 consecutive patients who underwent primary thyroid surgery were reviewed. HS was used in 136 patients and LS was used in 126 patients. A conventional technique was used in 64 patients. The were 42 male patients (12.9%) and 284 female patients (87.1%); their ages varied between 19 and 72 years (mean 42.8 ± 12.4). Data regarding each patient's demographics, thyroid pathology, operation time, and complications were collected throughout the study. Results: Te 3 study groups had similar demographics (age, female/male ratio) and thyroid pathology. Permanent hypocalcemia developed in 2 (1.6%) patients in the patient group operated on through LS, of which 1 was male and the other was female. In the HS group, postoperative hematoma developed in 2 (1.5%) patients. Conclusion: Te results of this retrospective clinical study showed that LS and HS thyroidectomy can be a useful and fast alternative for conventional thyroidectomy. Te main advantage of these devices is that they simplify the procedure and eliminate the need for clips and suture legations while achieving efficient hemostasis.
- ArticleYalnız künye2014Effect of human gestational diabetes mellitus on arterial stiffness
Inci, Sinan; Nar, G.; Balkan, F.; Aksan, G.; Degirmenci, H.; Hamur, H.
Background. The present study aims to evaluate the parameters for aortic stiffness by comparing gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) with a healthy control group via transthoracic echocardiography. Methods. This was a cross-sectional study involving monitoring of 62 pregnant women (33 with GDM and 29 with uncomplicated pregnancy as controls) during the third trimester. The aortic strain, aortic distensibility, and aortic stiffness values were measured via transthoracic echocardiography. Measurements of GDM group were repeated after 6 months. Results. Blood pressure levels, heart rate, and basic echocardiography were similar in both groups, but BMI was significantly higher in the GDM group (p <0.001). Whereas, aortic strain and distensibility were significantly lower in the GDM group (p <0.001). Aortic stiffness index was significantly higher in the GDM group (p <0.001). Aortic stiffness parameters did not exhibit any significant difference between the insulin-receiving GDM group and the diet-controlled GDM group. Postprandial glucose levels were correlated positively with the aortic stiffness index (p=0.04) and negatively with the level of aortic strain (p<0.01) and distensibility (p=0.03). The aortic stiffness in normoglycemic postpartum group at 6th month showed a significant improvement (p<0.001); but not in hyperglycemic postpartum group. Conclusion. Arterial stiffness was increased in women with GDM compared to the control group. A correlation between postprandial glucose and arterial stiffness was found. The aortic stiffness can be affected irreversibly from increased clinical and subclinical levels of glucose in postpartum period.

Myocardial infarction (MI) causes energy depletion through imbalance between coronary blood supply and myocardial demand. Irisin produced by the heart reduces ATP production by increasing heat generation. Energy depletion affects irisin concentration in circulation and cardiac tissues, suggesting an association with MI. We examined: (1) irisin expression immunohistochemically in rat heart, skeletal muscle, kidney and liver in isoproterenol (ISO)-induced MI, and (2) serum irisin concentration by ELISA. Rats were randomly allocated into 6 groups (n = 6), (i) control, (ii) ISO (1 h), (iii) ISO (2 h), (iv) ISO (4 h), (v) ISO (6 h), and (vi) ISO (24 h), 200 mg ISO in each case. Rats were decapitated and the blood and tissues collected for irisin analysis. Blood was centrifuged at 1792 g for 5 min. Tissues were washed with saline and fixed in 10% formalin for histology. Serum irisin levels gradually decreased from 1 h to 24 h in MI rats compared with controls, the minimum being at 2 h, increasing again after 6 h. Cardiac muscle cells, glomerular, peritubular renal cortical interstitial cells, hepatocytes and liver sinusoidal cells and perimysium, endomysium and nucleoi of skeletal muscle were irisin positive, but its synthesis decreased 1-4 h after MI. At all time-points, irisin increased near myocardial connective tissue, with production in skeletal muscle, liver and kidney recovering after 6 h, although slower than controls. Unique insight into the pathogenesis of MI is shown, and the gradually decrease of serum irisin might be a diagnostic marker for MI.
- ArticleYalnız künye2014Protective effect of nimesulide against hepatic ischemia/reperfusion injury in rats: Effects on oxidant/antioxidants, DNA mutation and COX-1/COX-2 levels
Demiryilmaz, Ismail; Turan, Mehmet Ibrahim; Kisaoglu, Abdullah; Gulapoglu, Mine; Yilmaz, Ismayil; Suleyman, Halis
Background Nimesulide is a pharmacological agent and selective COX-2 inhibitor. It has anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic properties. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of nimesulide on oxidant/antioxidant, DNA mutation and COX-1/COX-2 activities in rat liver tissue with induced ischemia/reperfusion (I/R). Methods Before the experiment, rats were divided into four groups; liver ischemia/reperfusion (LIR), 50 mg/kg nimesulide + liver ischemia/reperfusion (NLIR50), 100 mg/kg nimesulide + liver ischemia/reperfusion (NLIR100) and a control group to be given a sham operation (SG). Malondialdehyde (MDA), total glutathione (GSH) levels and myeloperoxidase (MPO), COX-1/COX-2 enzyme activities and DNA damage product level results from liver tissues and serum AST and ALT levels were determined. The data obtained were compared with the results from the liver ischemia/reperfusion and sham operation groups. Results MDA levels, MPO and COX-2 activities and products of DNA injury were significantly lower in the groups given nimesulide, and particularly the NLIR100 group, compared to the LIR group (p < 0.05), while tGSH levels were significantly higher (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference between the NLIR50 and NLIR100 groups and the LIR group in terms of COX-1 levels (p > 0.05). AST and ALT levels were significantly lower in the other groups compared to the LIR group (p < 0.05). Conclusions Nimesulide at 100 mg/kg prevented oxidative liver damage induced with I/R significantly better than at a dose of 50 mg/kg. These experimental findings indicate that nimesulide may be useful in the treatment of hepatic I/R damage.
- ArticleAçık Erişim2014Cardiac, skeletal muscle and serum irisin responses to with or without water exercise in young and old male rats: Cardiac muscle produces more irisin than skeletal muscle
Aydin, Suna; Kuloglu, Tuncay; Aydin, Suleyman; Eren, Mehmet Nesimi; Celik, Ahmet; Yilmaz, Musa; Kalayci, Mehmet; Sahin, Ibrahim; Gungor, Orhan; Gurel, Ali
Irisin converts white adipose tissue (WAT) into brown adipose tissue (BAT), as regulated by energy expenditure. The relationship between irisin concentrations after exercise in rats compared humans after exercise remains controversial. We therefore: (1) measured irisin expression in cardiac and skeletal muscle, liver, kidney, peripheral nerve sheath and skin tissues, as also serum irisin level in 10 week-old rats without exercise, and (2) measured tissue supernatant irisin levels in cardiac and skeletal muscle, and in response to exercise in young and old rats to establishing which tissues produced most irisin. Young (12 months) and old rats (24 months) with or without 10 min exercise (water floating) and healthy 10 week-old Sprague-Dawley rats without exercise were used. Irisin was absent from sections of skeletal muscle of unexercised rats, the only part being stained being the perimysium. In contrast, cardiac muscle tissue, peripheral myelin sheath, liver, kidneys, and skin dermis and hypodermis were strongly immunoreactivity. No irisin was seen in skeletal muscle of unexercised young and old rats, but a slight amount was detected after exercise. Strong immunoreactivity occurred in cardiac muscle of young and old rats with or without exercise, notably in pericardial connective tissue. Serum irisin increased after exercise, being higher in younger than older rats. Irisin in tissue supernatants (cardiac and skeletal muscle) was high with or without exercise. High supernatant irisin could come from connective tissues around skeletal muscle, especially nerve sheaths located within it. Skeletal muscle is probably not a main irisin source.
- ArticleYalnız künye2014Increased platelet distribution width is associated with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction and thrombolysis failure
Cetin, Mustafa; Bakirci, Eftal Murat; Baysal, Erkan; Tasolar, Hakan; Balli, Mehmet; Cakici, Musa; Abus, Sabri; Akturk, Erdal; Ozgul, Sami
We investigated 2 hypotheses: (1) a relationship between platelet indices and stable coronary artery disease (CAD) and acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and (2) a relationship between platelet indices on admission and thrombolysis outcomes in patients with STEMI. A total of 260 patients were enrolled. The white blood cell (WBC) and platelet distribution width (PDW) were found to be increased in patients with STEMI (P for both <.001). White blood cell and PDW were independent predictors of acute STEMI. Mean platelet volume (MPV) and PDW were significantly higher in the thrombolysis failure group than in the thrombolysis success group (9.9 ± 1.8 vs 9.2 ± 1.5 fL, P =.021 and 17.7 ± 1.0 vs 16.4 ± 2.1 fL, P <.001, respectively). Mean platelet volume and PDW were independent predictors of thrombolysis failure. Patients with acute STEMI had higher PDW than did patients with stable CAD. In addition, higher PDW and MPV seem to correlate with thrombolysis failure in patients with STEMI.

Results: Thirteen out of 60 RPL cases and one out of 40 in the control group were carriers of factor V Leiden mutation. While six patients were carriers of prothrombin G20210A gene mutation, none in the control group carried this mutation. Twenty-nine out of 60 RPL cases and 17 out of 40 control cases had MTHFR mutation. Conclusion: The authors found a positive correlation between RPL and FVL and FII gene mutations, but no significant association between RPL and MTHFR gene mutation.
- Review ArticleAçık Erişim2014An update on coronary artery disease and chronic kidney disease
Afsar, Baris; Turkmen, Kultigin; Covic, Adrian; Kanbay, Mehmet
Despite the improvements in diagnostic tools and medical applications, cardiovascular diseases (CVD), especially coronary artery disease (CAD), remain the most common cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The main factors for the heightened risk in this population, beside advanced age and a high proportion of diabetes and hypertension, are malnutrition, chronic inflammation, accelerated atherosclerosis, endothelial dysfunction, coronary artery calcification, left ventricular structural and functional abnormalities, and bone mineral disorders. Chronic kidney disease is now recognized as an independent risk factor for CAD. In community-based studies, decreased glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and proteinuria were both found to be independently associated with CAD. This paper will discuss classical and recent epidemiologic, pathophysiologic, and clinical aspects of CAD in CKD patients.
- ArticleAçık Erişim2014The i{dotless}nvestigation of plasma glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, 6-phoshogluconate dehydrogenase, glutathione reductase in premenauposal patients with i{dotless}ron deficiency anemia
Ozcicek, Fatih; Aktas, Mehmet; Türkmen, Kultigin; Coban, T. Abdulkadir; Cankaya, Murat
Background and Objective: Iron is an essential element that is necessary for all cells in the body. Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is one of the most common nutritional disorders in both developed and developing countries. The glutathione pathway is paramount to antioxidant defense and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD)-deficient cells do not cope well with oxidative damage. The goal of this study was to check the activities of G6PD, 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase, glutathione reductase in patients with IDA. Methods: We analyzed the plasma samples of 102 premenopausal women with IDA and 88 healthy control subjects. Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase activity as compared to the reduction of NADP +, glutathione reductase activity was performed based on the oxidation of NADPH. 2 ml of plasma were used in all analyzes. SPSS program was used for all of the statistical analysis. Result: Diagnosis of iron deficiency in patients belonging to the analysis of blood were ferritin 3.60 ± 2.7 ng / mL, hemoglobin 9.4 ± 1.5 mg / dl and hematocrit 30.7 ± 4.1% ratio; in healthy subjects ferritin 53.5 ± 41.7 ng/ml, hemoglobin level 13.9 ± 1.3 mg / dl and hematocrit ratio 42 ± 3.53%. When compared to healthy subjects the glutathione reductase level (P < 0.001) was found to be significantly higher in patients with IDA. IDA patients with moderate and severe anemia had lower GR activity when compared to IDA patients with mild anemia. But the plasma levels of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (P<0,600) and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (P < 0.671) did not show any differences between healthy subjects and in patients with IDA. Conclusion: It was shown that Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase and 6-Phosphogluconate Dehydrogenase have no effect on iron-deficiency anemia in patients. The plasma GR levels of premenopausal women with IDA were found to be higher compared to healthy subjects, which could be secondary to erythrocyte protection against oxidative stress being commonly seen in IDA.
- ArticleAçık Erişim2014Evaluation of satisfaction levels of patients undergoing high tibial osteotomy
Gürsu, Sarper; Yıldırım, Timur; Çamurcu, Yalkın; Sofu, Hakan; Demir, Bilal; Issın, Ahmet; Şahin, Vedat
Objective: High tibial osteotomy (HTO) is a surgical treatment method applied for isolated-medial gonarthrosis. Successful results were reported in different studies. We have evaluated the satisfaction levels of the patients and the clinical results of HTO. Materials and Methods: Ninety-nine patients who underwent open wedge osteotomy as the surgical treatment of medial gonarthrosis between the years 2002 and 2006 were included in our study. The mean age at the time of surgery was 54.9 years, and the mean follow-up time was 6.8 years. Results: Patients were asked whether they were satisfied with the operation or not; 41 of them (41.4%) were completely satisfied, 30 patients (30.3%) were partially satisfied, and 28 of them (28.3%) were dissatisfied. Fifteen patients (15.1%) underwent secondary total knee arthroplasty. and for 2 other patients, arthroplasty was planned. When patients were asked whether they would recommend HTO to others, 74 of them (74.7%) said they would, but 25 patients (25.3%) said they would not. Conclusion: High tibial osteotomy is a very successful surgical treatment. However, patient satisfaction levels may not be as high as expected. In this regard, when assessing the clinical outcomes of HTO, better methods that include the patients’ feedback should be taken into consideration.
- ArticleAçık Erişim2014The role of apelins in the physiology of the heart
Aydin, Suleyman; Aydin, Suna; Eren, Mehmet Nesimi; Sahin, Ibrahim
Apelins are a peptide hormone known as the ligand for the G protein-coupled APJ receptor. There are many different forms of apelin in the circulation. Apelins and their receptors are expressed in the central nervous system, including the hypothalamus, and in numerous other peripheral tissues. These peptides are also synthesized in and secreted from the adipose tissues. Additionally, apelins were immunohistochemically shown to be synthesized in smooth muscle cells in the media of the left internal mammary artery (LIMA) and the saphenous vein, fibroblast cells in the media of the aorta and endothelial cells of the intima. Similarly, it was recently reported that the enzyme linked immunoassay (ELISA) measurements of apelins were similar to its immunohistochemical data in the tissues of the aorta and left internal mammary artery. Apelins which are rapidly eliminated from the circulation have a half life of less than eight minutes. The normal concentration of apelins in the human plasma ranges between 1.3 ng/mL and 246±0.045 ng/mL. Apelins serve important functions in food intake, vasopressin (anti-diuretic hormone: ADH) and histamine release, gastric acid, bicarbonate secretion and insulin secretion, diuresis, cell proliferation, angiogenesis, glucose-fluid balance and regulation of gastrointestinal motility and cardiovascular system. Therefore, this review aims to focus on the potential role of the apelin system in the balance of the cardiovascular system.

Baykara, Mehmet; Denkçeken, Tuba; Bassorgun, Ibrahim; Akin, Yigit; Yucel, Selcuk; Canpolat, Murat
Objective To investigate for the potential of detection of positive surgical margins by the elastic light single-scattering spectroscopy (ELSSS) system with a single optical fiber probe during radical prostatectomy. Materials and Methods ELSSS spectra in the 450- to 750-nm wavelength regions were obtained from a total of 31 benign tissue samples and 14 malignant tissue samples from 18 patients. The ELSSS spectral data were assessed by comparing these against the "gold standard" histopathology results. Data were analyzed using principal component analysis, followed by linear discriminant analysis. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was used for differentiating performance. Results Classification based on the discriminant score provided a sensitivity of 86% and a specificity of 97%, in differentiating benign from malignant surgical margins of prostate tissues, with a positive predictive value of 0.92, a negative predictive value of 0.94, and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.87. Conclusion The ELSSS system can accurately distinguish between benign and malignant surgical margins of prostate tissues with a high positive predictive value and negative predictive value. It is a promising technique, and it may be a valuable new tool for determining positive surgical margins during radical prostatectomy.

Erdurak, Selcuk Cem; Coskun, Berna Uslu; Sakalli, Erdal; Tansuker, Hasan Deniz; Turan, Fatih; Kaya, Deniz
The aim of the present study was to determine the rate of myringosclerosis after radiofrequency (RF) myringotomy and ventilation tube (VT) insertion and compare it with that after the incisional myringotomy and VT insertion. Thirty children (60 ears), 2-16 years old (mean age 7.06 ± 2.77 years) who were planned to undergo surgical intervention for bilateral otitis media with effusion (OME), were included in this study. The children were treated by RF myringotomy of the right ear, incisional myringotomy of the left ear, and insertion of VTs into both ears. Both ears were examined intraoperatively for bleeding, and patients were evaluated for myringosclerosis formation with otomicroscopy at the end of the ninth month. Myringosclerosis was observed in 22 of the 60 ears. The overall incidence was 36.6 %. Fifteen (50 %) left ears showed myringosclerosis by otomicroscopy, and seven (23.3 %) right ears showed myringosclerosis. The rate of myringosclerosis of the right ear was significantly lower than that of the left ear (p < 0.05). In addition, intraoperative tympanic membrane bleeding was observed in 24 (40 %) of the 60 ears: 21 (70 %) left ears and three (10 %) right ears were perforated by RF. The tympanic membrane bleeding rate of the right ear was significantly lower than that of the left ear (p < 0.01). The present study is the first to determine the myringosclerosis rate after RF myringotomy and VT insertion. Our results indicate that VT insertion with RF myringotomy decreased the incidence of myringosclerosis.

Introduction: Impairment of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and being in a depressive mood were found to be associated with increased mortality in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. We aimed to investigate the association between HRQoL, depression, other factors and mortality in PD patients. Materials and methods: Totally 171 PD patients were included and followed for 7 years in this prospective study. Results: Of 171 PD patients, 45 (26.3%) deceased, 18 (10.5%) maintained on PD, 87 (50.9%) shifted to hemodialysis (HD) and 21 (12.3%) underwent transplantation. The most common cause of death was cardiovascular disease (32, 71.1%) followed by infection (6, 13.3%), cerebrovascular accident (5, 11.2%). The etiology of patients who shifted to HD was PD failure (41, 47.1%), peritonitis (33, 37.9%), leakage (6, 6.9%), catheter dysfunction (3, 3.4%), self willingness (4, 4.6%). Non-survivors were older than survivors (56.6 ± 15.0 vs. 43.6 ± 14.6, p = 0.003). There were also statistically significant difference in terms of albumin, residual urine, presence of diabetes and co-morbidity. When the groups were compared regarding HRQoL scores, non-survivors had lower physical functioning (p < 0.001), role-physical (p = 0.0045), general health (p = 0.004), role-emotional (p = 0.011), physical component scale (PCS) (p = 0.004), mental component scale (MCS) (p = 0.029). Age, presence of residual urine, diabetes, albumin, PCS and MCS were entered in regression analysis. Decrease of 1 g/dL of albumin and being diabetic were found to be the independent predictors of mortality. Conclusions: Diabetes and hypoalbuminemia but not HRQOL scores were associated with higher mortality in PD patients after 7 years of following period.

The essential oils having many application fields such as medicine, flavoring, cosmetics are natural products obtained from aromatic plants. As the natural products of Ferula species have a wide range of use in folk medicine, this study was planned to evaluate the mutagenic and antimutagenic activities of essential oils of leaves and flowers of Ferula orientalis grown in Erzurum, through the bacterial reverse mutation assay. Furthermore, the chemical compositions of essential oils isolated by the hyrodistillation method were analysed by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography–mass spectroscopy (GC-MS), as their biological activities were connected to their contents. According to our results, any tested essential oil at any used concentration on Salmonella typhimurium TA1535 and TA1537 strains and in Escherichia coli WP2 uvrA strain showed no mutagenic activity. However, the tested materials at different concentrations showed antimutagenic activities against the used mutagens. The inhibition rates ranged against sodium azide (NaN3) on S. typhimurium TA1535 from 29% to 36%, against 9-aminoacridine (9-AA) on S. typhimurium TA1537 from 40% to 68% and against N-methyl-N’-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG) on E. coli WP2 uvrA from 23% to 52%, respectively. Also, it is revealed by GC and GC/MS analysis of the essential oils isolated from the leaves and flowers, respectively. The major compounds in these oils were determined as α-cadinol, δ-cadinene and germacrene D-4-ol. The results of this study indicate that as the essential oils of F. orientalis have many constituents, they show no mutagenic activity but significant antimutagenic activity, and these materials can be safely used in medicinal applications after further investigations.

Aim This study is a biochemical investigation of the effect of etoricoxib, a selective cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 inhibitor, on ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury experimentally induced in rat ovaries. Methods Experimental animals were divided into four groups: (i) ovarian ischemia/reperfusion (IRG); (ii) 30 mg/kg etoricoxib + ovarian ischemia/reperfusion (EIRG-30); (iii) 60 mg/kg etoricoxib + ovarian ischemia/reperfusion (EIRG-60); and (iv) a sham operation (SG) control group. Results The results showed levels of malondialdehyde in the IRG, EIRG-30, EIRG-60 and SG group ovarian tissue of 20.2 ± 3.4, 11.2 ± 3.2, 5.5 ± 1.9 and 3.8 ± 1.5 μmol/g protein, respectively. Myeloperoxidase activity for these groups was 24.2 ± 6.7, 13 ± 2.4, 4 ± 1.8 and 3.5 ± 1.9 U/g protein, and total glutathione levels were 1.6 ± 0.8, 4.5 ± 1.9, 6.5 ± 1.9 and 7.5 ± 2.4 nmol/g protein, respectively. COX-1 activity in IRG, EIRG-30, EIRG-60 and SG group rat ovarian tissue was 5.0 ± 2.8, 12.2 ± 2.4, 16.7 ± 2.8 and 17.5 ± 4.7 U/mg protein, and COX-2 activity was 18.3 ± 2.7, 3.5 ± 1, 1.8 ± 0.7 and 0.7 ± 0.3 U/mg protein, respectively. Conclusion Etoricoxib prevented oxidative damage induced with I/R in rat ovarian tissue. This property of etoricoxib suggests that it can be clinically beneficial in the prevention of damage that may arise with reperfusion by detorsion for the protection of the ovaries against torsion.

Objective: The aim of our study was to investigate subclinical cardiac disturbances in patients with symptoms due to adenotonsillar hypertrophy (ATH) and the impact of adenotonsillectomy (AT) using conventional and novel echocardiographic measures. Material and methods: Thirty patients with grade 3 or 4 ATH (mean age: 7.86 ± 3.83 years; 10 females) and 30 healthy, age- and sex-matched volunteers (mean age, 8 ± 2.77; 14 females) were enrolled in the study. In addition to conventional two-dimensional and Doppler echocardiographic parameters, tissue Doppler parameters, including myocardial performance indices (MPIs) of both the right (RV) and left ventricle (LV), were studied. The severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) was determined using the OSA-18 health quality questionnaire. The OSA-18 questionnaire and echocardiographic examination were repeated after AT in patients with ATH. Results: The total OSA-18 scores for the control, preoperative, and postoperative groups were 39.56 ± 19.98, 80.63 ± 22.32, and 44.10 ± 20.31, respectively. Conventional parameters were not different among the groups. The mean pulmonary artery pressure estimated using the Mahan formula was increased in the ATH group compared with that in the control group (21.72 ± 4.25 vs. 12.43 ± 3.83, respectively; p < 0.001) and significantly improved after AT (21.72 ± 4.25 vs. 16.09 ± 4.53; p < 0.001). The RV MPI was significantly different between the control and ATH groups (0.322 ± 0.052 vs. 0.383 ± 0.079, respectively; p= 0.001). Both the LV and RV MPI significantly improved (0.515 ± 0.066 vs. 0.434 ± 0.052, p < 0.001; and 0.383 ± 0.079 vs. 0.316 ± 0.058, p= 0.018, respectively) after surgery for ATH. Conclusions: Our study revealed that the patients with OSA-specific symptoms due to ATH had higher pulmonary artery pressure and impaired RV function according to novel echocardiographic parameters. Surgery for ATH seems to have an important effect on both LV and RV function.
