Will ferulago glareosa kandemir and hedge (Apiaceae) be extinct in the near future?

    Sari, İdris; Kandemir, Ali

Turkey is one of the most important temperate countries on Earth in terms of plant diversity. There is a growing interest in understanding habitat suitability and future distributions of species in the scientific world. Because climate change has impacted ecosystems with major consequences, species are shifting and declining much faster than in the past. Some global climate models used for predicting climate in the future better represent and have higher reliability for some climate types. Ferulago glareosa, which lives in Turkey, is a rare endemic plant species. In this study, we investigated current and future distributions of the species determined to be habitat-specific to lead to future studies on conservation. The Maxent model was used to map the current and future potential distribution of the species for Turkey. HadGEM2-ES and MPI-ESM-LR global climate models based on predicted future suitability of F. glareosa for 2050 and 2070 were examined. Models were constructed based on 20 presence points of the species and 2 abiotic variables. The current species distribution modeling of Ferulago glareosa predicted by the model produced very high success rates with training and test AUC values of 0.970 and 0.968, respectively. The true skill statistics value of the model (0.8245) indicated excellent model performance. In the end, we have demonstrated how predictions obtained from a highly reliable global climate model for a region’s climate could provide more dependable insights into the future distribution of narrow-spread endemic species.

An Alternative View to the Global Coal Trade: Complex Network Approach

Semanur, Soyyigit; Hüseyin, Topuz; Halil, Özekicioǧlu

The role of energy for the developmental process of nations is a known fact due to being crucial input for any phase of production of goods and services. That's the reason why countries that are rich in energy resources also have strategic power in terms of the international trade of these resources. On the other hand, it becomes important to provide energy security for countries that are resource-poor. Although green energy has become preferred one, fossil fuel energy keeps its place as one of the most used energy resources. That's why in this study it is aimed to determine major providers and users of coal as a type of fossil fuel energy resources. It is vital to investigate the structure of global coal trade structure to determine the weaknesses and strength of supply and use of coal. Network approach provides a holistic view to the system analyzed and presents more realistic (high-degree) indicators to analyze it. In this study, global trade network of coal is analyzed from 2000 to 2017 via network analysis. Changing structure and evolution of global coal trade has been revealed via some topological parameters which are specific to complex networks such as density, clustering, assortativity/disassortativity, centrality and degree distribution.

A comparison study on combustion and emission characteristics of actual synthetic gas mixtures

Yilmaz, Harun; Cam, Omer; Yilmaz, Ilker

In this study, combustion and emission characteristics of output synthetic gas mixtures of two different power stations, namely Schwarze Pumpe and Fife, were investigated in a swirl stabilized combustor. For this purpose, an experimental test rig which is equipped with a premixed burner that can combust synthetic gases in a wide gas composition range was built and utilized. Tested synthetic gas mixtures are 61.9%H2-26.2%CO-6.9%CH4-5.0%CO2 (Schwarze Pumpe - H2/CO: 2.36) and 34.4%H2-55.4%CO-5.1%CH4-5.1%CO2 (Fife - H2/CO: 0.62). Actually, these gas mixtures contain slight amount of N2 and Ar. Therefore, right amount of CO2 was added to each mixture to represent these inert constituents. The comparison of combustion behavior of respective synthetic gas mixtures was conducted via examining axial and radial temperature values throughout the combustor. Besides, emission behavior was interpreted by analyzing measured CO, CO2 and NO values at combustor chimney. Results of this study showed that 61.9%H2-26.2%CO-6.9%CH4-5.0%CO2 mixture performs better in respective combustor with regard to temperature distribution, and emitted CO and NO levels.

Comparison of meteorological indices for drought monitoring and evaluating: A case study from euphrates basin, Turkey

Katipoglu, Okan Mert; Acar, Reşat; Şengül, Selim

Drought incidents occur due to the fact that precipitation values are below average for many years. Drought causes serious effects in many sectors, such as agriculture, economy, health, and energy. Therefore, the determination of drought and water scarcity, monitoring, management, and planning of drought and taking early measures are important issues. In order to solve these issues, the advantages and disadvantages of five different meteorological drought indices were compared, and the most effective drought index was determined for monitoring drought. Accordingly, in the monthly, 3-month, and 12-month time period, covering the years between 1966 and 2017 (52 years), Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), Statistical Z-Score Index (ZSI), Rainfall Anomaly Index (RAI), Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI), and Reconnaissance Drought Index (RDI) were used. It was concluded that precipitation-based SPI and ZSI are similar patterns and precipitation, and temperature-based SPEI and RDI are similar patterns. Also, it has been determined that RAI is more effective than other indices in determining the periods of extreme drought or wet. Furthermore, SPEI and RDI have been found to be superior to other indices as they take into account the water consumption and climate effects caused by evapotranspiration.

Evaluation of design methodology, limitations, and iterations of a hydrogen fuelled hybrid fuel cell mini UAV

Özbek, Emre; Yalin, Gorkem; Ekici, Selcuk; Karakoc, T. Hikmet

Fossil fuels are being depleted day by day. The dependency on fossil fuels must be eliminated in the following years. Also, in the matter of emissions, the cleaner energy generation and usage techniques must be evaluated. The aviation industry is a big energy consumer nowadays. More electric aircraft and All-electric aircraft concepts are being worked on globally to achieve a sustainable aviation industry. Though the electric motors can produce enough thrust force for airliners, due to energy storage technology limitations, the thrust force can't be sustained for a long duration flight. Battery technologies are being developed to overcome these limitations. Moreover, hybrid energy systems and sustainable onboard energy generation systems are trending to achieve sustainability. Fuel Cell and Hybrid Fuel Cell systems are two of the feasible onboard energy systems. The applications of these systems on UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) produce data for later studies. The system's behavior during flight phases must be examined on platforms like mini UAVs to understand the system capabilities. In this work, the development phases of a mini UAV designed for Hybrid Fuel Cell flight are introduced. Design philosophy and methodology for designing a UAV with a hybrid propulsion system, limitations of such designs and iterations required during the flight tests are explained. Also, the detailed design estimations of power consumption and final power consumption data collected from flight tests of the aircraft were compared to provide valuable data for following power consumption limited aircraft design studies.

The relationship between energy consumption, CO2 emissions, and economic growth in Turkey: evidence from Fourier approximation

Balli, Esra; Nugent, Jeffrey B.; Coskun, Nuran; Sigeze, Ciler

Given that Turkey has recently committed itself for the first time to reducing its CO2 emissions in the interest of sustainable growth in not only Turkey but also the world as a whole, this paper examines the relationship between energy consumption, CO2 emissions, and economic growth in Turkey for the period 1960–2014. In view of the different findings concerning causality and the character of the relationships between these variables revealed in our review of past studies (in most cases using quite different methods), this paper utilizes several different but related methodological approaches for identifying causal relationships. These include both the Toda and Yamamoto (1995) approach, the Fourier Toda-Yamamoto for Cumulative Frequency approach developed by Nazlioglu et al. (2016), vector error correction model (VECM) methodology, and the asymmetric Granger causality test proposed by Hatemi-J (Empir Econ 43:447–456, Hatemi-j 2012). Our results show that, when we apply the popular Toda-Yamamoto model, causality in these relationships is not confirmed even among any of the relevant variables in Turkey. Yet, when the Fourier Toda-Yamamoto tests for cumulative frequency are employed, we find unidirectional causality running from GDP per capita to emissions of CO2 per capita. Moreover, when we utilize the VECM methodology, the results show that long-run causality exists from GDP per capita and energy to CO2 emissions. When we apply the asymmetric causality tests, the results provide even stronger evidence for a unidirectional causal relationship from GDP per capita to CO2 emissions. As a result, the latter sets of results, based on more realistic conditions, suggest very strongly that, if Turkey is to meet the objectives of its ambitious Climate Change Action Plan commitment to the United Nations to reduce its CO2 per capita emissions relative to its past trends by up to 21% over the coming 2021–2030 decade, it is going to get very serious about the best way to do this as soon as possible.

Renewable energy cooperatıves for sustaınable tourısm development (evaluatıon of sample ınvestment analysıs and fınancıal contrıbıtıon to kemaliye)

    Akkaya, Fatma Aldirmaz

The most important reason of climate change due to global warming, which has become a universal problem today, pollution of ground water and air, ecosystem deterioration, rapid erosion of flora and fauna from the natural process is the emission of gren house gases into the atmosphere which is above the natural boundaries that the atmosphere can carry. The majority of the gren house gas emissions is consist of carbondioxide (CO2) gas which occurs by use of nonrenewable energy sources. The natural environment, which is the most important source of human life and of course the tourism sector, is under the great threat of carbondioxide emission with the contribution which is above the known of the sector. In order to eliminate this problem, it has become necessary to act together globally and so the states have started to be obliged by contracts such as Kyoto Protocol, Paris Climate Agreement, at the same time, individual people have started the gren consumer movement. In paralel with this, in the tourism sector, the demand for sustainable gren tourism started to be effective along with the search for alternative tourism. While the use of renewable energy sources in urban and rural areas plays an important role in reducing the emission of carbondioxide into the atmosphere, it is also becoming a marketing tool in tourism destinations. For this reason, it ensures the environmental sustainability of tourism by preventing the destruction of the natural environmentandal so contributes to the increase of the rate of gain in tourism destinations outside of its own return, thus ensuring the economic sustainability of tourism. However, the high amount of investment which is required for the production of renewable energy resources in sustainable tourism destinations leads to a slow progress in the use of renewable energy resources. Renewable energy cooperatives provide a great convenience in the solution of the financing problem of investments and in the distribution of risk. It also emerges as a solution to the local development problem in many ways, such as gaining small savings into the economy, the local people having a say in the energy production and consumption, the economic gain of the local population, the provision of social cohesion and avoiding foreign dependency in energy. The aim of the study is to evaluate the economic, social and environmental contribution to the local people and destination if the renewable energy investments in the sustainable tourism destinations are financed through energy cooperatives. In this context, an exemplary solar power plant investment in Kemaliye, which is a tourism destination, was analyzed and considering that the financing of this investment will be covered by the renewable energy cooperative, the financial contribution of the investment to each member is evaluated.

Numerical Investigation of Combustion and Emission Behavior of Shale Gas Mixtures in a Laboratory Scale Combustor

    Yilmaz, Harun

In this study, effects of gas composition and swirl number on combustion and emission behavior of shale gas mixtures were numerically investigated in a laboratory scale combustor. For this purpose, a two-dimensional model of an experimentally tested premixed combustor was formed. In this model, methane/air combustion was simulated, and achieved results were compared with experimental data to validate applicability of the model. Numerical studies were performed using computational fluid dynamics software, ANSYS/Fluent. Tested shale gas mixtures are; 86% CH4 - 14% C2H6, 81% CH4 - 10% C2H6 - 9% N2 and 58% CH4 - 20% C2H6 - 12% C3H8 - 10% CO2. Combustion and emission behavior of the respective mixtures were determined by examining temperature and species (CO2 and NOx) distributions throughout the combustion chamber. Results of this study showed that %86 CH4- %14 C2H6 mixture is favorable in terms of combustion and emission performance; emissions of NOx are highly dependent on gas composition and swirl number, and axial temperature values and reaction rate are directly proportional to swirl number.

Daş, Mehmet; Balpetek, Nilay; Akpınar, Ebru Kavak; Akpınar, Sinan

In this study, wind energy potential of Sinop and Adıyaman provinces in different regions of Turkey were analyzed statistically, based on the hourly measured data by Directorate of State Meteorological Station in 2008-2017 years. During the statistical analysis, average wind speed, standard deviation of wind speed, maximum wind speed and wind power density were determined. The Weibull distribution function was used to the distribution of wind speed and determination of wind power intensity. For the power density values obtained as a result of the study, a predictive model was established with the support vector machine (SVM) regression. Polynomial kernel, normalized polynomial kernel, radial basis function (RBF) kernel and Pearson universal kernel VII (PUK) models were used in SVM regression. Mean absolute error (MAE), root mean square error (RMSE), relative absolute error (RAE), and root relative square error (RRSE) error analyzes were performed for SVM regression estimates. The best estimation of wind power density predictive models generated by 4 different kernel functions using SVM regression was shown to belong to the polynomial kernel.

Performance assessment of solar-powered high pressure proton exchange membrane electrolyzer: A case study for Erzincan

    Ganjehsarabi, Hadi

In this study, a performance assessment of a solar-powered high-pressure proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer for hydrogen production is conducted. The feasibility analysis of photovoltaic systems equipped with a high pressure PEM electrolyzer is presented for a university campus-scale community in Erzincan- Turkey. Variable solar irradiance data sets are utilized to assess the performance of the proposed system. A parametric study is conducted in order to evaluate the influence of some design parameters as well as operating conditions on the efficiency of the system. Efficiency of the overall system in the case of relevant inverter sizing is in the range of 11–12%. An ascent of the number of stacks leads to an increase in production rate which is almost linear by photovoltaic (PV) array size. The results shows that in order to have a higher efficiency, the inverter size should be higher than 0.75% of maximum excess power. The proposed system investigated in this study shows great promise of opening up opportunity to develop the high pressure PEM electrolyzer.

Mixed refrigerant as working fluid in Organic Rankine Cycle for hydrogen production driven by geothermal energy

    Ganjehsarabi, Hadi

The possibility of utilizing low temperature heat source systems for producing electricity has been significant due to increasing energy demand. In this study, the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) integrated with proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer is analyzed thermodynamically and economically. A mixture of butane, pentane and iso-pentane is selected as working fluid. The results show that utilizing the mixed refrigerant enhances the performance of the system and results in a higher hydrogen production rate because of a glide match of temperature profiles in the heat exchangers. Economic analysis results which are helpful in designing entire the system show that the highest cost component is electrolyzer, followed by the turbine and condenser.

Modeling of heat transfer coefficient in solar greenhouse type drying systems

    Çerçi, Kamil Neyfel; Daş, Mehmet

As a sustainable energy source, solar energy is used in many applications. A greenhouse type dryer, which is a food drying system, directly benefits from solar energy. Convective heat transfer coefficient (hc) is an important parameter in food drying systems, in terms of system design and performance. Many parameters and equations are used to determine hc. However, as it is difficult to manually process and analyze large amounts of data and different formulations, machine learning algorithms are preferred. In this study, natural and forced convective solar greenhouse type dryers were designed. In a solar greenhouse type dryer, grape is dried in natural (GDNC) and forced convection (GDFC). For convective heat transfer coefficient (hc), predictive models were created using a multilayer perceptron (MLP)-which has many uses in drying applications, as mentioned in the literature-and decision tree (DT), which has not been used before in food drying applications. The machine learning algorithms and results of the estimated models are compared in this study. Error analyses were performed to determine the accuracy rates of the obtained models. As a result, the hc value of the dried grape product in a natural convective solar greenhouse type dryer was 11.3% higher than that of the forced type. The DT algorithm was found to be a more successful model than the MLP algorithm in estimating hc values in HDFC according to Root Mean Square Error. (RMSE = 0.0903). On the contrary, the MLP algorithm was more successful than the DT algorithm in estimating hc values in GDNC (RMSE = 0.0815).

Investigation of combustion and emission performance of a micro combustor: Effects of bluff body insertion and oxygen enriched combustion conditions

    Yilmaz, Harun

Major challenges for micro combustors are high heat losses and inappropriate residence time. In this study, it was aimed to eliminate these challenges via placing bluff bodies into the combustion zone and combusting fuel with oxygen enriched air. To this end, micro combustor models with different geometries were constructed and in these models, premixed H2/air combustion was simulated by using ANSYS/Fluent CFD code to investigate effects of bluff body shape, location and thickness, and low level O2 enhancement on performance determining parameters such as rate of conversion of fuel to useable heat, temperature uniformity, pollutant emissions etc. To further analyze effects of micro combustor geometry, a perforated plate was also placed into the combustion zone. Thermal performance of the micro combustor with perforated plate insertion in O2 enriched conditions was found to be highest in terms of increased reaction kinetics and heat transfer characteristics. The trade-offs of respective design are increased NOx emissions and slightly decreased temperature uniformity.

Effects of synthetic gas constituents on combustion and emission behavior of premixed H2/CO/CO2/CNG mixture flames

    Yilmaz, Harun; Yilmaz, Ilker

In this study, effects of synthetic gas constituents on combustion and emission behavior of premixed H2/CO/CO2/CNG blending synthetic gas flames were experimentally investigated in a swirl stabilized laboratory scale combustor. Effects of these constituents on flashback and blowout equivalence ratios of respective mixtures were also determined. Firstly, mixtures of CNG/H2/CO with varying H2/CO ratios were tested and then each mixture was diluted with the same amount of CO2 (20% by volume) to better represent synthetic gas. H2/CO ratios of tested gas mixtures were so adjusted that heating value of each gas mixture was low, moderate or high. Combustion behavior of such mixtures was evaluated with respect to measured axial and radial temperature values. Moreover, emission behavior was analyzed by means of emitted CO, CO2 and NOx levels. Flame temperature measurements were conducted with B and K type thermocouples. Emission measurements were performed with a flue gas analyzer, which was equipped with a ceramic coated probe, as well. Results of this study revealed the great impact of gas composition on combustion and emission behavior of studied flames. Two main findings are: H2/CO ratio slightly alters temperature distribution throughout combustor, while hydrogen reaction kinetics play the most significant role in synthetic gas combustion (1), CO2 addition tremendously increases emissions of CO (2).

The relationship between tourism, CO 2 emissions and economic growth: a case of Mediterranean countries

Balli, Esra; Sigeze, Ciler; Manga, Muge; Birdir, Sevda; Birdir, Kemal

This study explores the impact of tourism on economic growth considering CO 2 emissions utilizing panel data techniques for a sample of Mediterranean countries. The cointegration tests reveal that there is a positive long-run equilibrium between tourism, CO 2 emissions and economic growth. This positive long-run relationship may suggest that tourism increases the level of CO 2 emissions and has a statistically significant impact on economic growth in Mediterranean countries. Emirmahmutoglu and Kose (2011. Testing for Granger causality in heterogeneous mixed panels. Economic Modelling, 28(3), 870–876.) test results reveal that the tourism-led growth hypothesis, which suggests that tourism contributes to economic growth, is valid for Egypt, Italy, and Spain. Additionally, there exists a bidirectional relationship between tourism and economic growth both in Morocco and Turkey.
