Akkoc, Senem; Çağlar-Yavuz, Sevtap; Türkmenoğlu, Burçin; Tuğrul Zeyrek, Celal; Ilhan, Ilhan Ozer; Alhag, Sadeq K.; Al-Shuraym, Laila A.

In this study, seven known compounds (5a–g) were tested towards four human cancer cell lines including DLD-1, HepG2, MDA-MB-231, and MCF-7 for 48 h. In addition, all compounds were also tested in a normal human cell line (Wl-38). The results showed that a compound 5e in particular had cytotoxic effects in DLD-1, HepG2, and MCF-7. The molecular modeled structures of seven investigated compounds 5a–g in the ground state were optimized using density functional theory (DFT). The chemical parameters were determined by DFT calculations. HOMOs and LUMOs of 5a–g were revealed to provide a reasonable qualitative indication of their excitation properties. To support experimental studies, compounds (5a, 5c, and 5e) with anticancer effects were interacted with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR-2), which were determined as possible targets. As a result of these interactions, binding parameter values (docking score, Glide e-model, Glide energy) between ligand and target were calculated.

Objective: In this study, two multiplex tandem real-time PCR kits were used to rapidly diagnose common Gram-positive cocci and Gram-negative bacilli, detect their commonly seen antibiotic resistance genes, and evaluate the two kits’ performance. Materials and Methods: Gram-positive 12 (GP-12) kit (AusDiagnostics, Australia) and Gram-negative 12 (GN-12) kit (AusDiagnostics, Australia) were used in the study. Seventy-eight Gram-negative bacilli and 54 Gram-positive cocci grown in blood culture vials were applied to GN-12 and GP-12 panels. At the same time, the passages of the samples were made and incubated. After that, identification and antibiograms were made in the Phoenix™ automated system (Becton, Dickinson and Company, USA) and VITEK 2 Compact automated system (bioMérieux, France). Results: Twenty-one Staphylococcus aureus, twelve coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS), two Streptococcus pneumoniae, two Enterococcus faecium, and three Enterococcus faecalis were found to match the results from the automated GP-12 Kit. Pathogens present in the panel were successfully identified using the GN-12 kit. Both panels were found to be more effective in diagnosing polymicrobial infections. Conclusion: These evaluated kits were rapid (approximately three hours) and valuable in identifying common sepsis pathogens and resistance genes. Thus, these tests can easily be used in the diagnosis of sepsis.

Does Voiding in a Standing Position Cause Benign Prostate Hyperplasia?

Aykanli, Emre; Yavuzsan, Abdullah Hizir; Buyuktepe, Omer; Altunok, Vedat; Balikci, Aysenur; Kocoglu, Fatih; Koncuk, Mustafa Serkan; Atalay, Numan; Turkmen, Nihat

Background: Benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) is a common health problem amongst men worldwide. It has a multifactorial ethiology, and in some societies, urinating in a standing position is believed to cause BPH. Although the effect of urination position on voiding parameters has been extensively investigated, whether they have a role in the aetiology of BPH is not known. Material and Methods: The patients who had (n = 89) and had not ever used (n = 213) alpha-blockers were included in the study. All patients were divided into four groups in accordance with their past urination habits: Group 1 (I always pee in a standing position), group 2 (I mostly pee in a standing position), group 3 (I mostly pee in a sitting position) and group 4 (I always pee in a sitting position). The current uroflowmetry results, prostate volumes (PVs) and International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) of the groups were compared. Results: The IPSSs of groups 1–4 (total n = 213) who had not used alpha-blockers before were 10 (9–16), 10 (7–14), 10 (7–14) and 10 (8–13) points, respectively; Their median PVs were 40, 35, 40 and 40 mL, respectively; And their average maximum urinary flow rate (Qmax) values were 17 (12.7–20.5), 1.46 (11.1–20), 15 (12.4–18.9) and 15.6 (11.7–19.5) mL/s, respectively. No statistical difference was observed between the groups. Alpha-blockers were started in 104 patients who had not used alpha-blockers before in accordance with their clinical results. When these 104 patients who were started on alpha-blockers for the first time and 89 patients who were started on alpha-blockers before were examined together, the average ages of starting alpha-blockers were 59.9 ± 7.1, 60.5 ± 6.7, 59.6 ± 6.5 and 60.8 ± 6.7 years. No statistical difference was observed between the groups. Patients with and without clinical BPH were compared in terms of past urination habits. In both groups, the rates of patients who always or mostly urinated whilst sitting (60%–61%) and those of patients who always or mostly urinated whilst standing (39%–40%) were similar. Conclusions: This retrospective study showed that positional urination habits do not have a role in the aetiology of BPH. However, multicentre prospective studies with a larger patient population are needed.

Sarıoğlu, Ahmet Oral; Türkmenoğlu, Burçin; Kahraman, Demet Taşdemir; Güler, Semih; Sürmelihindi, Bahar; Morcali, Mehmet Hakan

The present study examines the synthesis of Schiff bases through the reaction between 2‑hydroxy-5-nitrobenzaldehyde and sulfacetamide (N-(4-aminophenylsulfonyl)acetamide). The structure of the ligand and metal complexes (Cu+2, Ni+2, Co+2) was characterized using a variety of techniques, including elemental analysis, magnetic susceptibility, molar conductivity, UV–Vis, FT-IR, NMR, and LC-MS/MS. The cytotoxic effects of the complexes and ligand were tested on three cell lines: human epidermoid carcinoma (HTB-54), lung adenocarcinoma (A549), and neuroblast (SH-SY5Y). Furthermore, the antibacterial capabilities of Schiff base and its metal complexes were evaluated against a range of bacterial strains, including B. cereus and S. aureus, as well as resistant gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria like S. typhimurium and E. coli, and fungi like C. albicans. In the computational chemistry section, the physicochemical properties of the synthesized compounds, including EHOMO, ELUMO, ΔEGap, electrophilic index, chemical hardness, chemical potential, electrophilicity index, and chemical softness, were investigated using the B3LYP/6–31G* basis set of density functional theory (DFT).

5-methyl-N'-(thiophen-2-ylmethylene)-1H-pyrazole-3-carbohydrazide as potent anticancer agent: Synthesis, spectroscopic characterization, anticancer activity and DFT studies

Hassani, Issam Ameziane El; Brandán, Silvia A.; Altay, Ahmet; Yeniçeri, Esma; Alsalme, Ali; Oulmidi, Afaf; Ansar, M'hammed; Karrouchi, Khalid

A new pyrazole-hydrazide hydrazone derivative, named 5-methyl-N'-(thiophen-2-ylmethylene)-1H-pyrazole-3-carbohydrazide (TMPC) has been synthesized and characterized by FT-IR, UV–Vis, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and HRMS-ESI. Its cytotoxic activity was tested on various cancer and healthy cell lines using the XTT method. In addition, the advanced anticancer mechanism was investigated by flow cytometry analysis. Hybrid B3LYP/6–311++G** calculations reveal two stable C1 and C2 conformers of TMPC with energy differences of 28.96 kJ/mol in the gas phase and 8.50 kJ/mol in ethanol solution. Comparisons among the experimental NMR, UV and infrared spectra with the predicted ones support the presence of both forms in solution. The presence of dimer C2 justify the intensities and numerous bands observed in the IR spectrum in the 2000–10 cm−1 region. Probably, the repulsion between the N7 and O1 atoms in C1 explain its lower stability and the higher solvation energy (-108.20 kJ/mol) observed for this form in ethanol than C2 (-88.01 kJ/mol). NBO calculations suggest that both forms are stable in the two media while the AIM analyses evidence the higher stability of C2 than C1 due to the N9-H22···N7 interaction observed only for this conformer in the gas phase. Gap values suggest high reactivities of both forms, as compared with similar pyrazole-carbohydrazide species. Full vibrational assignments are reported for both forms of TMPC together with the main scaled force constants. The XTT results showed that TMPC exhibited a selective cytotoxic effect on the tested cancer cell lines in a dose- and time-dependent manner, and also displayed the most potent cytotoxic activity against breast cancer MCF-7 cells with an IC50 value of 22.79 µM after 48 h Flow cytometric analyses showed that TMPC induced apoptosis and suppressed PI3K/Akt signaling in MCF-7 cells.

Aim: Research on the effects of methylphenidate on female fertility is limited. This study evaluated the effects of methylphenidate on reproductive function, oxidants, antioxidants, proinflammatory cytokines, prolactin, and cortisol in female rats. Methods: Forty-eight albino Wistar female rats were divided into four groups consisting of 12 rats, which were given pure water orally once daily for 7 days (HG-1), 10 mg/kg methylphenidate orally once daily for 7 days (MP-1), pure water orally once daily for 30 days (HG-2), and 10 mg/kg methylphenidate orally once daily for 30 days (MP-2). At the end of the treatment periods, tail vein blood was collected from six rats per group for prolactin and cortisol determination. Subsequently, euthanasia was performed and the ovaries were removed. Ovaries were analyzed for malondialdehyde (MDA), total glutathione (tGSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and immunohistochemically. For breeding, the remaining six rats were mated with male rats for 1 month. Rats that failed to give birth were classed as infertile. Results: A comparison of MP-1 and MP-2 groups to healthy controls revealed an elevation in MDA and corticosterone levels, and a decline in tGSH, SOD, and CAT levels (p < 0.001). Methylphenidate did not affect prolactin, IL-1β, and TNF-α levels (p > 0.05). MP-1 and MP-2 exhibited immunopositivity for 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHDG). MP-2 rats developed 66.7% infertility while MP-1, HG-1, and HG-2 rats did not. Conclusion: In ovaries, methylphenidate caused oxidative stress, but did not induce inflammation. Long-term use of methylphenidate caused increased cortisol levels and infertility.

Design, synthesis of antipyrine-based Schiff bases and investigation of their cholinesterase and carbonic anhydrase activities by in vitro and in silico approaches

Çakmak, Reşit; Başaran, Eyüp; Türkmenoğlu, Burçin; Şentürk, Murat

In this study, a series of antipyrine-based Schiff bases (1–10) was designed, synthesized, and evaluated as potential inhibitors of various metabolic enzymes, including acetylcholinesterase (AChE), butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), and human erythrocyte carbonic anhydrase I and II (hCA I and hCA II). The target molecules were characterized by UV–vis, FT-IR, 1H NMR, 13CNMR, LC-HRMS, and elemental analysis. All tested derivatives demonstrated low nanomolar inhibition with Ki values of in the range of 20.58 ± 0.35 to 53.11 ± 1.02 nM against AChE, 21.84 ± 0.40 to 54.41 ± 1.05 nM against BChE, 27.45 ± 0.41 to 48.22 ± 0.91 nM against cytosolic hCA I isoform associated with epilepsy, and 6.02 ± 0.11 to 29.32 ± 0.54 nM against cytosolic hCA II isoform associated with glaucoma. In general, most these molecules, except for a few, inhibited these enzymes more than acetazolamide (AZA) and neostigmine. Among them, compounds 5, 7, 8, and 9 showed the best inhibitory activities against AChE, BChE, hCA I, and hCA II, respectively. Docking results were calculated for the compounds that showed the best inhibitory activity against these enzymes and for reference compounds. Based on the molecular docking results, they were determined to have high binding energies, including hydrogen bonds, electrostatic interactions, and hydrophobic interactions. Absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME) parameters determined that all the synthesized pyrazolone ring-bearing Schif base derivatives (1–10) have the expected physicochemical properties in terms of drug-likeness and can be evaluated as orally active potential. Properties such as the electrophilicity index and chemical hardness were also investigated by density functional theory (DFT) at the B3LYP/6–311G** level of theory.

Neuropathic Pain, Polyneuropathy, and Quality of Life in Patients Receiving Dialysis

Ergül, Emine Esra; Ayçiçek, Hilal Büşra; Hayme, Serhat; Ergül, Çetin; Özdemir, Elif Can; Kara, Ali Veysel

Background: Meuropathic pain and polyneuropathy can affect the quality of life in patients receiving dialysis. The aim of this study was to assess quality of life and to compare electromyography (EMG) findings between patients screened positive and negative for neuropathic pain. Material/Methods: This study was designed as an observational cross-sectional study in which 74 patients receiving hemodialysis were admitted. The Ferrans & Powers Quality of Life Index-Dialysis III Version, Neuropathic Pain Questionnaire (NPQ), and Brief Pain Inventory-Short Form were completed by all patients. Additionally, EMG was performed on all patients regardless of the presence of neuropathic symptoms. Results: According to the NPQ screening results, 51.4% of patients were identified as likely having neuropathic pain, whereas EMG findings revealed polyneuropathy in 89.2% (66 patients). Ferrans & Powers Quality of Life Index total and subgroup scores were compared between the NPQ-positive and NPQ-negative groups based on the screening results. Quality of life was found to be statistically significantly lower in the NPQ-positive group across all subgroups (P<0.001). No statistically significant differences were observed between NPQ-positive and NPQ-negative groups regarding any of the polyneuropathy types identified via EMG (P>0.05). Conclusions: This study explores the association between screening-positive neuropathic pain and quality of life. Given the high prevalence of polyneuropathy on EMG even among patients without symptoms suggestive of neuropathic pain, it can be valuable to assess dialysis patients during the asymptomatic period as well.

Sunitinib’s Effect on Bilateral Optic Nerve Damage in Rats Following the Unilateral Clamping and Unclamping of the Common Carotid Artery

Cicek, Ibrahim; Esenulku, Cenap Mahmut; Somuncu, Ahmet Mehmet; Bulut, Seval; Yucel, Nurinisa; Bal Tastan, Tugba; Coban, Taha Abdulkadir; Suleyman, Halis

Background/objectives: Common carotid artery occlusion can cause oxidant and inflammatory damage to the optic nerve. In this study, the effect of sunitinib was investigated, the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of which have been previously reported and shown to be protective in I/R injury and in preventing bilateral optic nerve ischemia–reperfusion (I/R) injuries after unilateral common carotid artery ligation in rats. Methods: In this study, 18 Albino Wistar male rats were divided into SG (sham-operated), CCU (clamping and unclamping), and SCCU (sunitinib + clamping and unclamping) groups. One hour before the surgical procedures, sunitinib (25 mg/kg, oral) was given to SCCU rats. Anesthesia was induced with ketamine (60 mg/kg, ip) and sevoflurane. The right common carotid arteries of all rats were accessed under anesthesia. While the skin opened in SG rats was closed with sutures, the right common carotid arteries of CCU and SCCU rats were clipped, and an ischemia period was created for 10 min. Then, reperfusion (6 h) was achieved by unclipping. After euthanasia with ketamine (120 mg/kg, intraperitoneally), the right and left optic nerves of the rats were removed and examined biochemically and histopathologically. Results: Malondialdehyde, tumor necrosis factor α, interleukin-1β, and interleukin-6 were increased, and total glutathione levels had decreased in both ipsilateral and contralateral optic nerves (p < 0.05). These changes were more prominent on the ipsilateral side. Similarly, histopathological damage was observed to be more on the ipsilateral side (p < 0.05). Biochemical and histopathological changes were significantly suppressed in rats receiving sunitinib treatment (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Sunitinib may protect optic nerve tissue against I/R injury by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation.

Relationships between psychological, clinical aspects and eating behavior in individuals with diabetes: cross-sectional study

Kacar, Mihrican; Yangilar, Filiz; Yilmaz, Sevil Karahan; Yilmaz, Nazife

Introduction: Eating disorders are closely related to mental status, and individuals with diabetes have a significantly increased risk of developing an eating disorder. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the possible association of cognitive restriction, uncontrolled eating, emotional eating factors, and eating disorders with depression in individuals with diabetes. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out on 132 patients who were diagnosed with diabetes between 2022 and 2024 in the Internal Medicine outpatient clinic of a university hospital in Türkiye. The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) was used to assess the depression status of individuals, the Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire (TFEQ-R18) to measure eating habits, and the Night Eating Questionnaire (NEQ) to obtain information about night eating behavior. All anthropometric measurements were taken by the researcher. Results: It was determined that there was a 'mild depression' state in both the Type 1 diabetes patient group (14.10±8.26) and the Type 2 diabetes patient group (14.74±7.64). A linear, moderate, and significant correlation was found between BDI scores and NEQ scores in individuals with type 1 diabetes (r=0.547, p<0.001). In individuals with type 2 diabetes, an inverse, moderate, and significant correlation was found between BDI scores and cognitive restriction scores (r=-0.406, p=0.029). For the individuals in the two groups, statistically significant differences were found in the scores obtained from the BDI, NEQ, and TFEQ-R18 in terms of the history of mental illness and obesity, diabetic diet, and hypoglycemia (p<0.05). Conclusions: In this study, it has been shown that the effect of mental illness and obesity history on current eating behavior may be on night eating behavior, cognitive restriction, and uncontrolled eating. It is likely that compliance with the diabetic diet and prevention of hypoglycemia will be reflected in eating behavior and anthropometric measurements.

Background: The extant research on judo sports has principally concentrated on the physiological effects of training. Conversely, there has been limited attention paid to studies on psychological resilience, self-control, and emotional expression levels. The present study examined the effects of Judo exercises on psychological resilience, self-control, and emotional expression levels in healthy male subjects. Methods: The present study comprised 50 healthy, sedentary male subjects. The subjects were randomly divided into two groups: one group participated in judo training (JT) and the other group served as the control group (CON). The sample sizes for the JT and CON groups were both 25. The JT group underwent judo training, while the CON group maintained their usual lifestyle. The Brief Psychological Resilience Scale, the Multidimensional Brief Self-Control Scale, and the Berkeley Emotion Expression Scale were administered prior to and following the 6-week training period. Results: The study demonstrated that a 6-week judo training regimen exerted a significant effect on the psychological resilience score (e.s. = 1.047, p < 0.001), while no such effect was observed in the Control group (e.s. = 0.0091, p = 0.751). In the context of self-control levels, an effect was observed on the Initiation sub-dimension (e.s. = 1, 739, p < 0.001), yet no effect was found on the Inhibition dimension (e.s. = 0.052, p = 0.892). In the control group, a significant decrease was identified in the Initiation sub-dimension (e.s. = 0, 785, p = 0.001) and Inhibition sub-dimension (e.s. = 1, 861, p < 0.001). The findings indicate that impulse power (e.s. = 0.395) and concealment (e.s. = 0.428) exerted a negligible influence on the emotional expression sub-dimensions. Conversely, psychological resilience (e.s. = 0.886) demonstrated a substantial impact. Conclusions: The judo exercises demonstrated a favorable impact on psychological resilience, self-control, and emotional expression levels in healthy male subjects. The findings of this study may offer significant insights into the impact of judo exercises on psychological resilience, self-control, and emotion expression levels. These findings could serve as a guide for the development of future interventions and program design in the domain of sport psychology.

Betanin, widely found in red beets, is a natural bioactive compound with health beneficial effects. Of recent interest is the impact of sepsis on the reproductive system. The present study first evaluated the effects of betanin on the changes in oxidative stress/antioxidant, inflammatory, ER stress/antiapoptotic responses and 8-OHdG parameters as well as TLR4 and NF-κB activity on LPS-induced testis damage. The male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into control group, LPS group, oral betanin groups (50 and 110 mg/kg) and oral betanin plus LPS groups. The sepsis model was induced by LPS (10 mg/kg) injection in rats. Animals were intragastrically treated with betanin an hour before the LPS challenge. Betanin supplementation at high dose stimulated the activation of SOD in rat testis tissue and prevented LPS-induced oxidative stress. Consistently, betanin conferred protection by reducing the increasing levels of TNF, VCAM-1 and MPO in tissue against the inflammatory effects of LPS. Betanin also inhibited LPS-activated apoptotic ER stress-CHOP pathway and significantly ameliorated pathological findings. Besides, NF-κB and TLR4 expressions were decreased in testes of rats in HD Be + LPS group compared with the LPS group. High expression of Bcl-2 was associated with the anti-apoptotic effects of betanin in LPS-induced testis injury.

Citalopram is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) and has been associated with reproductive dysfunction in women. In this study, the effects of citalopram on reproductive health in female rats were investigated. Albino Wistar rats was divided into six groups (each group/n = 12): healthy (HG), citalopram (CTP), cabergoline (CBR), metyrapone (MTP), cabergoline+citalopram (CBR+CTP), and metyrapone+citalopram (MTP+CTP). Initially, cabergoline 0.1 mg/kg and metyrapone 50 mg/kg were administered orally. A dose of 10 mg/kg of citalopram was given orally one hour later. For 30 days, the treatment protocol was applied once a day. Then, blood samples were taken from the tail veins of six rats from each group for prolactin and corticosterone analyses and ovaries were removed after euthanasia. The ovaries were examined for oxidants and antioxidants and histopathologically. During two months, the remaining animals were kept with male rats. The rats that did not deliver during this period were considered infertile. In terms of oxidants and antioxidants, there was no significant difference between the groups (p > 0.05). In half of the female rats, citalopram caused infertility, increased levels of prolactin and corticosterone, and damaged the ovaries histopathologically (p < 0.05). Cabergoline suppressed the elevation of prolactin by citalopram (p < 0.001) but did not prevent infertility. In contrast, metyrapone significantly prevented the citalopram-induced increase in corticosterone, infertility, and tissue damage induced by citalopram (p < 0.05). According to the results of our study, the preventive effect of drugs that suppress excessive corticosterone on citalopram-induced infertility in rats may be encouraging for further clinical studies.

OBJECTIVE: Our aim in the study is to investigate circadian rhythm, season, age, gender, and hemogram parameters in children diagnosed with febrile convulsions. METHODS: The data of a total of 478 children, consisting of 160 patients with febrile convulsions (90 male/70 female) and 318 control groups (healthy, convulsiyon free-febrile), were compared. RESULTS: The average age of all patients was 25.7±14.7 (minimum 6-maximum 60) months, and the most common convulsion age was 13-18 months. Circadian rhythm was similar, application seasons were similar. The male/female ratio was 1.3. MPV in winter was lower than other seasons (p=0.002). At younger ages, lymphocyte count was higher (p=0.048) and NLR was lower (p=0.036). NLR was lower in patients with febrile convulsions with anemia than in patients with febrile convulsions without anemia (p=0.029). NLR was lower in patients with febrile convulsions with anemia than in the convulsion-free febrile control group with anemia (p=0.001). In patients with febrile convulsions, MPV was lower (p=0.033) and NLR was higher (p=0.001) than in the convulsion-free febrile control group. One third of the patients had hypocapnia. CONCLUSION: Young age, anemia, inflammation, and hypocapnia may facilitate the occurrence of febrile convulsions. MPV and NLO, which are hemogram parameters, can guide us about inflammation. Blood gases may provide information regarding hypocapnia. These rapid examinations may help elucidate the etiology. Prospective studies are needed for circadian rhythm in febrile convulsions.

Number and localisation of nutrient foramen on clavicle and its relationship with other clavicle parameters

Yarar, Burhan; Akbulut, Yalçın; Karakaş, Aslı Beril; Sunar, Mukadder; Emir, Büşra

Background: Nutrient foramen (NF) is a hole in the long bones that allows the passage of the nutrient artery. The vasculature of the bone is very important for fracture healing and vascularised bone grafting. Therefore, information about the location and number of NFs is important for surgical and clinical practice. The clavicle is the most commonly fractured bone. The aim of this study was to analyse the relationship between the location and number of NFs on the clavicle and other clavicle parameters. Materials and methods: This study was performed on 86 dry clavicles of contemporary adult individuals without age and gender records. Some clavicle parameters and NF parameters were measured and the relationship between them was analysed. Measurements were performed using a digital caliper. Results: Most of the clavicles had a single NF. There was a positive correlation between DFant/DFpost (distance between NF and anterior border/distance between NF and posterior border) and vertical thickness of sternal end (VTs), vertical thickness of thinnest point (VTt) and clavicular thinnest point index (CIt) in all cases (p < 0.05). Sagittal thickness of acromial end (STa), vertical thickness of clavicle (VTc), sagittal thickness of clavicle (STc), and sagittal thickness of thinnest point (STt) were associated with NF counts. The most common localisation of NFs was type 2. The NFs were mostly located in the inferior position. Conclusions: Relationships between the number and morphometric characteristics of NFs and some clavicle parameters were determined. We suggest that knowledge of the number and morphometric characteristics of NFs is important for the protection of the nutrient artery in orthopaedic surgery applications. Individual Preparedness for Disasters and Emergencies: Research on Meskhetian Turks

    Tercan, Bahadlr

Objective The main objective of this study is to investigate the level of disaster preparedness and associated socio-demographic characteristics of Meskhetian Turks as a marginalized population who migrated to Erzincan, Turkey due to war and conflict. Methods A total of 426 individuals between the ages of 18-65 participated in this study. Data were collected through face-to-face interview technique by utilizing the General Disaster Preparedness Belief Scale. The t test and one-way ANOVA test and multiple regression analysis (Enter model) were used to analyze the data. Results The total scale scores of the participants ranged between 80-138, with a mean score of 105.43±10.88. It was determined that the disaster preparedness levels of those who were between 32-38 years of age, who had bachelor's degree, who had disaster experience, and who received disaster training were higher. It was determined that there was a significant positive relationship between the disaster preparedness levels of the participants and age, education level, and disaster training. Conclusions Disaster preparedness levels of Meskhetian Turks were determined to be high. According to the results of the analyses, it was revealed that age, education level, and disaster training variables have a positive and significant effect on the level of disaster preparedness.

Objective Our aim was to investigate the effectiveness of the dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) virtual noncalcium (VNCa) technique in avascular necrosis (AVN) for detecting bone marrow edema (BME) and staging. Methods This prospective study included adult patients diagnosed with unilateral or bilateral femoral head AVN between January 2023 and December 2023, who had magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and DECT. Two participants were excluded from the study due to undergoing surgical procedures during the period between the scans. Two reviewers, blinded to MRI images and clinical data, visually examined color-coded VNCa pictures to assess BME using a binary classification (0 = normal bone marrow, 1 = BME). Same 2 reviewers also used color-coded and nonmapped images to stage AVN in accordance to the "Association for Research on Osseous Circulation"(ARCO) staging system. Interobserver agreements for the visual evaluation and staging were calculated with κ coefficient. Following a visual assessment of BME and the staging of AVN, same 2 reviewers conducted CT density measurements on regions of BME regions utilizing DECT noncalcium images. An independent third investigator (reference standard) utilized MRI, x-ray, and clinical data to confirm the definitive diagnosis and staging of AVN. A P value less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results Fifty patients (28 men, 22 women, mean age: 44.2 ± 13.1 years, range: 25-75 years) were included in the final analysis. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and accuracy of the VNCa technique in detecting BME were 96.0%, 94.4%, 97.9%, 89.4%, and 95.6%, respectively, for reviewer 1; and 96.0%, 88.9%, 96.0%, 88.9%, and 94.1%, respectively, for reviewer 2. Interobserver agreement was almost perfect (κ = 0.84). Both reviewer 1 and reviewer 2 accurately classified 92.7% of the AVNs. The density measurements showed a statistically significant difference (P = 0.001) between the edema regions and the normal marrow regions. No statistically significant difference was observed in the density measurements of edema regions at different stages (P = 0.13). Conclusions DECT VNCa technique exhibits excellent performance in detecting BME in hip AVN cases, as well as accurately determining the stage of AVN.

Inflammation, oxidative damage, and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) depletion play a role in the7 pathogenesis of cisplatin (CIS)-induced oral mucositis. Objective: The purpose of this research is to examine8 the impact of ATP against potential oral mucositis development in cisplatin-treated rats. Methodology All rats9 were randomly assigned to four groups, namely healthy control group (HG), ATP group (ATPG), Cisplatin10 group (CISG), and ATP + Cisplatin group (ATCS). Firstly, ATP 4 mg/kg was administered via intraperitoneal11 injection (IP) to both ATPG and ATCS groups. The same volume of normal saline was injected into HG and12 CISG groups. After 1 h, cisplatin 5 mg/kg was administered via IP to CISG and ATCS groups. The drugs13 were taken 1x1 for 7 d. Later, tongue tissues were collected from all groups. Biochemical, macroscopic,14 and histopathological examinations were performed on all tissues. Results: ATP inhibited cisplatin-induced15 oxidative damage and pro-inflammatory cytokines levels in tongue tissue. In the CIS group, a significant16 number of distinct sulcus formations were found in the apex and corpus, as well as a few ulcer foci in the17 corpus, significant papilla loss, and bleeding. Meanwhile, in the ATP group, a similar appearance to healthy18 tissue was observed. Histopathologically, it was determined that in cisplatin-aggravated tongue tissue19 damage, filiform papillae decreased when ATP was administered, and the arrangement and structures of20 the epithelium, blood capillaries, muscle groups, and adipose cell groups were normal. Conclusions: Oral21 mucositis caused by cisplatin is alleviated by ATP. These findings may be useful for developing new therapeutic22 approaches to prevent or treat mucositis, a side effect so severe that can lead to treatment discontinuation.23 24.
