Baykan, Ahmed Ramiz; Cerrah, Serkan; Kartal Baykan, Emine; Tanas, Serdar; Yavuzer, Bulent; Yazici, Gulce Naz; Kuzucu, Mehmet; Altuner, Durdu; Suleyman, Halis
Background: Olaparib, a clinically established poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitor widely used in oncology, has significantly improved outcomes in several malignancies. However, increasing evidence indicates that olaparib may induce hepatocellular injury through mechanisms involving oxidative stress, inflammation, and mitochondrial dysfunction. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP), a key regulator of cellular bioenergetics and redox homeostasis, may confer protection against oxidative tissue injury. This study investigated the hepatoprotective effects of ATP against olaparib-induced oxidative liver damage in rats and compared its efficacy with melatonin. Methods: Twenty-four male albino Wistar rats were randomly assigned to four experimental groups (n = 6): healthy control (HG), olaparib-treated (OLP), ATP plus olaparib (ATOL), and melatonin plus olaparib (MLOL). Olaparib was administered at a dose of 100 mg/kg orally twice daily, whereas ATP (5 mg/kg, intraperitoneally) and melatonin (10 mg/kg, orally) were administered once daily. The treatments were administered for 14 consecutive days. Hepatic oxidative and inflammatory status was assessed by measuring malondialdehyde (MDA), total glutathione (tGSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and ATP levels in liver tissue. Serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activities were measured as biochemical indicators of hepatocellular injury. Liver tissues were also examined histopathologically. Results: Olaparib administration significantly increased hepatic MDA and IL-6 levels together with serum ALT and AST activities, while significantly reducing hepatic tGSH and ATP levels and SOD and CAT activities compared with the healthy group (p < 0.001). Both ATP and melatonin significantly attenuated these alterations (p < 0.001). Notably, ATP demonstrated a more pronounced protective effect than melatonin, particularly in suppressing aminotransferase elevations and improving histopathological liver architecture. Conclusion: ATP significantly alleviates olaparib-induced hepatotoxicity by attenuating oxidative stress, suppressing inflammatory responses, restoring antioxidant defense mechanisms and significantly replenishing depleted hepatic ATP levels. These findings suggest that ATP may represent a promising therapeutic strategy for preventing PARP inhibitor-associated drug-induced liver injury.

Korkmaz, Elif Mirac; Lok, Neslihan
This study employed a descriptive and correlational research design to examine the relationship between death anxiety, hope, and psychological well-being in individuals diagnosed with cancer. Conducted in 2024 with 188 patients receiving treatment at an education and research hospital in Turkey, the study collected data using the Personal Information Form, the Death Anxiety Scale, the Dispositional Hope Scale, and the Psychological Well-Being Scale. Findings indicated that the mean total score of the Death Anxiety Scale was 7.32 ± 2.53. Death anxiety scores differed significantly by gender, marital status, educational level, cancer type, cancer stage, treatment type, hope, and psychological well-being (p < 0.05), but not by employment status, income level, or social security (p > 0.05). No significant association was found between age and death anxiety (p > 0.05). Moderate negative correlations were observed between death anxiety and hope, as well as between death anxiety and psychological well-being (p < 0.05). These results suggest that increases in death anxiety are associated with decreases in both hope and psychological well-being. Future research is recommended to further explore the influence of death anxiety on psychological health outcomes and to identify additional contributing factors.

Linezolid, an oxazolidinone antibiotic effective against Gram-positive pathogens, may cause nephrotoxicity and lactic acidosis during prolonged therapy. This experimental study investigated the protective effects of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), thiamin, thiamin pyrophosphate (TPP), and their combination (ATTP) on linezolid-induced renal injury and lactic acidosis in rats. Thirty-six male Wistar rats were randomly divided into six groups (n = 6): healthy control (HG), linezolid only (LZD), ATP+linezolid (ATLZD), thiamin + linezolid (TLZD), TPP+linezolid (TPLZD), and ATP+thiamin + TPP+linezolid (ATTPL). Linezolid (125 mg/kg, orally) was administered twice daily, while ATP (4 mg/kg), thiamin (20 mg/kg), and TPP (20 mg/kg) were given intraperitoneally once daily for 28 days. At the end of treatment, kidney tissues were examined for oxidative stress markers [malondialdehyde (MDA), total glutathione (tGSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT)] and histopathology, and blood samples were analyzed for blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, and lactate. Linezolid increased oxidative stress, suppressed antioxidants, and elevated BUN, creatinine, and lactate levels. ATP partially improved the oxidative balance in renal tissue but failed to prevent hyperlactatemia and impaired renal function. Thiamin did not produce significant changes. TPP markedly improved oxidative stress markers and reduced renal dysfunction. The triple combination provided the most pronounced protection, restoring antioxidant defenses, kidney function, and lactate levels to near-control values. Histopathological evaluation revealed marked tubular degeneration, interstitial hemorrhage, and mononuclear cell infiltration in the linezolid group, which were markedly improved by TPP and combination therapy. These findings indicate that TPP protects against linezolid-induced nephrotoxicity and lactic acidosis, with its efficacy further enhanced by ATP.

Objective: This study aims to investigate the effect of deltoid ligament repair on postoperative ankle functional scores in patients treated for supination-external rotation type bimalleolar equivalent ankle fractures. Methods: A retrospective review was conducted on 43 patients (25 males, 18 females) diagnosed with supination-external rotation type fractures and deltoid ligament rupture between 2015 and 2022. All patients underwent open reduction and internal fixation of the lateral malleolus and syndesmotic fixation. The cohort was divided into two groups: Group 1 (n = 17) performed additional deltoid ligament repair, while Group 2 (n = 26) did not. Clinical and functional outcomes were assessed using the American Orthopedic Foot & Ankle Society score, Olerud-Molander Ankle Score, and Visual Analog Scale with a minimum follow-up of 12 months. Results: The study revealed no statistically significant differences between the two groups regarding American Orthopedic Foot & Ankle Society (p = 0,53), Olerud-Molander Ankle (p = 0,29), or Visual Analog Scale (p = 0,29) scores. Additionally, no significant differences were observed in terms of hospitalization time, duration of splinting, time to full weight-bearing, or total follow-up duration. Conclusion: Deltoid ligament repair does not provide a statistically significant benefit to functional recovery in bimalleolar equivalent fractures. However, deltoid ligament repair may be considered as an additional intervention for bimalleolar equivalent fractures in selected cases. 10.1016/j.fuspru.2026.08.001

Ciminli, Alaattin; Aydin, Burak
This study aimed to identify distinct latent profiles of career anxiety among young adults and to examine the predictors of membership in these profiles by relating them to various factors, including academic unit and year of study. The data were collected from a sample of 509 young adults enrolled at universities in Türkiye, comprising 409 females (80.4%) and 100 males (19.6%). The instruments used for data collection included a personal information form, Career Anxiety Scale, Hope Scale, Perceived Social Support Scale, Perfectionism Scale, and the Coping Self-Efficacy Scale. Latent profile analysis (LPA) was employed to identify latent profiles, while multinomial logistic regression (R3STEP) analysis was conducted to examine the relationships between latent profile membership and sociodemographic variables. The results of the LPA revealed three distinct latent profiles: high anxiety and vulnerable (Profile 1), low anxiety and high psychosocial strength (Profile 2), and moderate group (Profile 3). The findings indicated that when Profile 1 was used as the reference group, academic unit type and class level did not significantly predict membership in Profile 2. However, vocational school status significantly predicted membership in Profile 3. When Profile 2 was used as the reference group, it was observed that both vocational school students and fourth-year students were significantly less likely to be members of Profile 3.

Baspinar, Busra; Tekin, Merve Nur; Özçelik, Ayşe Özfer; Çobanoğlu, Nazan
Background: Cystic fibrosis–related diabetes (CFRD) screening is typically recommended from age 10, yet glucose abnormalities may emerge earlier. Conventional screening tools may fail to detect dysglycemia in young children with cystic fibrosis (CF). Case Presentation: A 6-year-old girl with CF and severe pancreatic insufficiency underwent 14-day continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) as part of an observational study on glucose metabolism in pediatric CF patients. Results: CGM detected marked glycemic variability (38.4%), a mean glucose level of 192 mg/dL, and a time in range of 56%, despite only mildly elevated fasting glucose values. Laboratory workup confirmed CFRD (glycated hemoglobin 8.8%). After insulin initiation, pulmonary function improved substantially, with forced expiratory volume increasing from 76% to 97% of predicted within 2 months. Conclusions: CGM may identify clinically significant dysglycemia in young children with CF who would otherwise go undetected by age-based screening. In selected high-risk pediatric CF patients below the standard screening age, CGM may enable earlier diagnosis and timely intervention—a clinical question that warrants prospective investigation.

The present study aimed to investigate the therapeutic effects of Malus floribunda fruit ethanol extract on metabolic parameters and insulin signalling in a letrozole-induced PCOS-associated insulin resistance model. 60 female Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly allocated into five groups: Healthy Control, IR, IR + Metformin (300 mg/kg), IR + MF250, and IR + MF500. Treatments were administered orally for 15 days. Fasting insulin, HOMA-IR, OGTT, lipid profile, and reproductive hormones were assessed. Histological and IHC analyses of InR, IRS-1, and IRS-2 were performed on muscle and adipose tissues. The IR group exhibited significantly elevated insulin (p<0.001), HOMA-IR (p<0.001), testosterone, triglycerides, LDL, and total cholesterol levels, with reduced HDL and oestrogen levels compared to controls. Treatment with M. floribunda, particularly at 500 mg/kg, significantly improved insulin levels (p<0.001), HOMA-IR (p<0.001), lipid profile, and hormonal parameters. IHC analysis revealed suppressed InR, IRS-1, and IRS-2 expression in muscle and adipose tissues of the IR group, which was restored following M. floribunda treatment. M. floribunda extract administration, particularly at 500 mg/kg, significantly improved glucose homeostasis, lipid metabolism, hormonal balance, and insulin signalling pathway components (InR, IRS-1, IRS-2) in a letrozole-induced PCOS-associated insulin resistance model. These findings suggest that M. floribunda may serve as a promising alternative therapeutic agent for insulin resistance management.

Binay, Şengül Korkmaz; Karakurt, Papatya
Objective: This study aims to adapt the Nurses’ Spiritual Sensitivity Scale (NSSS) into Turkish and to conduct its reliability and validity study. Methods: This methodological study included 267 nurses. The scale was back translated in order to confirm the linguistic equivalence. A Nurse Information Form and the NSSS were administered to these nurses. The opinions of 14 faculty members in the field of nursing were solicited to test the content validity index (CVI). Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted to establish the validity index and construct validity. Internal consistency analyses were performed with Cronbach’s α coefficients and item analyses. Time invariance (in terms of test–retest reliability) was analyzed to test the reliability of this scale. Fifty-one nurses were subjected to the test‒retest across 4-week intervals to identify the time invariance of the scale. Results: The CVI values of the items ranged from 0.918 to 1. The CFA confirmed the original 2-factor structure of the scale. The Cronbach’s α coefficient was 0.894 for the subscale of nurses’ professional spiritual sensitivity and 0.887 for the subscale of nurses’ inner spiritual sensitivity. Conclusion: The Turkish version of the NSSS is a valid and reliable assessment instrument to assess the spiritual sensitivity of nurses.

OBJECTIVE: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is the most common peripheral vestibular disorder. It can recur despite successful maneuvers. While various risk factors for recurrence have been investigated, these remain controversial. The aim of this study was to identify potential risk factors for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo recurrence and contribute to the development of preventive treatment strategies. METHODS: The study involved 301 patients who presented to our clinic with dizziness and were diagnosed with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo between December 2019 and May 2022. Two groups, with and without benign paroxysmal positional vertigo recurrence, were compared in terms of age, gender, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, cardiovascular disease, asthma, hypothyroidism, magnesium deficiency, vitamin D deficiency, vitamin B12 deficiency, and iron deficiency to investigate the effects of these factors on recurrence. RESULTS: Recurrence was observed in 38 (12.6%) of the 301 patients. No age or gender difference was determined between the groups. Univariate analysis showed that hypertension (55.3 vs. 29.3%; p=0.003), vitamin B12 deficiency (21.1 vs. 6.5%; p=0.007), hyperlipidemia (26.3 vs. 5.7%; p<0.001), and asthma (15.8 vs. 5.7%; p=0.035) were more common in patients with recurrence. Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified only hyperlipidemia as a risk factor, raising the risk of recurrence approximately 3.7-fold (OR 3.71; 95%CI 1.36–10.13; p=0.011). CONCLUSION: Consideration of underlying comorbidities and systemic factors, effective management of existing comorbidities, and individualized treatment strategies are crucial in order to reduce benign paroxysmal positional vertigo recurrence rates and improve patients’ quality of life.

Background – In this study, the potential protective effects of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and glutathione (GSH) against atezolizumab-induced cardiac injury in rat heart tissue were investigated. Methods – A total of 24 male albino Wistar rats were used in the experiment. The animals were divided into four groups: healthy group adenosine triphosphate + atezolizumab (ATAZ), GSH + atezolizumab (GHAZ), and atezolizumab alone (ATZ). ATP was administered intraperitoneally at a dose of 4 mg/kg, while GSH was administered orally at a dose of 200 mg/kg for 7 days. Atezolizumab was administered intraperitoneally to the experimental groups at a dose of 10 mg/kg twice weekly. At the end of the experiment, malondialdehyde total glutathione (tGSH), superoxide dismutase catalase, interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels in heart tissues were measured using biochemical methods. In addition, histopathological and immunofluorescence examinations were performed. Results – The results showed that oxidative stress and inflammation markers increased, whereas antioxidant parameters decreased in the atezolizumab-treated group. ATP and GSH administration significantly attenuated these changes and exerted protective effects on cardiac tissue. Conclusion – Overall, ATP and GSH ameliorated the biochemical, histopathological, and immunofluorescence changes associated with atezolizumab-induced cardiac injury in this experimental model.

RESULTS: Sildenafil increased oxidant (malondialdehyde) levels and decreased antioxidant levels (total glutathione, superoxide dismutase, catalase) in rat ocular tissues and caused severe oxidative stress. In addition, sildenafil has been shown histopathologically to cause oxidative damage in retinal layers. ATP treatment suppressed oxidative stress and attenuated histopathological damage in the retinal layers. CONCLUSION: ATP protects retinal tissue against sildenafil-induced ocular oxidative damage in rats and may contribute to the development of novel approaches to prevent or treat this damage.

Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), originally developed as an antimalarial agent, has been associated with hepatotoxic effects in experimental and clinical settings. Our study was designed to evaluate the effects of this agent on liver toxicity and to understand the protective roles of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), Liver-52 (Liv-52), and their combination. Male Wistar rats (250–280 g) were randomly assigned to five groups (n = 6): healthy control (C), HCQ only (H), ATP plus HCQ (AH), Liv-52 plus HCQ (LH), and ATP–Liv-52 plus HCQ (ALH). ATP (4 mg/kg) was administered intraperitoneally once daily, whereas Liv-52 (20 mg/kg) was administered orally via gavage. One hour later, all groups except C received HCQ (120 mg/kg, orally, twice daily). All treatments were continued for seven consecutive days. At the end of the experiment, serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels were measured, and liver tissues were analyzed for malondialdehyde (MDA), total glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) activities, along with histopathological evaluation. HCQ administration significantly increased oxidative stress, as evidenced by elevated MDA levels (p < 0.01) and reduced antioxidant parameters, including GSH, SOD, and CAT (p < 0.05), accompanied by prominent histopathological damage. Treatment with ATP or Liv-52 markedly ameliorated these alterations by decreasing MDA and restoring antioxidant markers. The combination treatment was observed to exhibit the most pronounced protective effect; it significantly reduced MDA levels, improved GSH, SOD, and CAT levels more effectively, and produced significant decreases in AST and ALT values (p < 0.05).

Background/Objectives: Appendiceal collision tumors (ACTs), defined by the coexistence of two or more histologically distinct neoplastic components within the appendix, are rare entities. We aimed to characterize their clinicopathologic features, management strategies, and outcomes by integrating an institutional case series with a systematic review of the literature. Methods: We retrospectively identified ACTs diagnosed at our institution and performed a PRISMA 2020-guided search of PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases through May 2025 for case reports and case series. Two reviewers screened studies and extracted data on presentation, histologic composition, treatment, approaches and outcomes. Results: ACTs accounted for 4% of appendiceal tumors in our institution, all combining a neuroendocrine neoplasm (NEN) with a low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm. The literature search identified 69 ACTs from 33 studies; pooled with our cases, 74 patients were evaluated. The most common pairings were NEN–appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (53%) and NEN–adenocarcinoma (26%), while three-component tumors were rare (n = 2). Early-stage tumors (pTis–pT1) were uniformly managed with appendectomy or limited resection, in line with established stage-based management algorithms for appendiceal neoplasms. Advanced-stage tumors (pT3–pT4) were treated according to the biologically dominant component, frequently with colectomy and, in high-risk mucinous disease, cytoreductive approaches. Across stages, outcomes appeared to be driven by the non-neuroendocrine component; a coexisting low-grade NEN did not independently confer worse prognosis. In ACTs with an adenocarcinoma component, goblet cell morphology was common, and outcomes appeared similar to those reported for non-collision appendiceal adenocarcinoma. Conclusions: ACTs represent a heterogeneous group in which prognosis is dictated by the non-neuroendocrine component and tumor stage. Low-grade NEN components appear biologically indolent, whereas adenocarcinoma and high-risk mucinous components have been observed to exhibit behavior similar to their solitary counterparts.

Aksakal, Ceyhun; Akti, Serdar; Kars, Ayhan; Gökçe, Erkan
Frontal recess is an important region in endoscopic surgery in terms of its complex anatomic structure and excessive pneumatized cell variations. With the International Frontal Sinus Anatomy Classification (IFAC), classification and nomenclature of cellular variations in this region have been facilitated. The aim of the present study was to determine the incidence of frontal recess cell variations in computed tomography (CT) according to IFAC and to investigate the possible effect of these cells on the development of frontal sinusitis. In this observational, retrospective, and cross-sectional study, the frontal recess cell variations on both sides of the patients who underwent paranasal sinus CT examination were analyzed according to IFAC, and the possible relationship between these cellular variations and the presence of frontal sinusitis was evaluated by statistical methods. A total of 428 sides of 214 paranasal sinus computed tomography were examined. Agger nasi cell (ANC) was observed in 90.8%, while supra agger cell (SAC) were detected in 57.9% and supra agger frontal cell (SAFC) in 20.5%. Supra bulla cell (SBC) were observed in 80.1% of the sides and supra bulla frontal cell (SBFC) in 19.3%. Supraorbital ethmoid cell (SOEC) were detected on the 41.8% of sides, while frontal septal cells (FSCs) were observed in the 28.9%. The results of the present study showed that the prevalence of cells, especially other than ANC cells varies between populations. In addition, the presence of SAC, SAFC, SBC, SBFC, and SOEC appeared to be associated with a tendency to the development of frontal sinusitis.
RDL Kalıcı Kaydıİncele - ArticleYalnız künye2026Evaluation of the Relationship Between Sarcopenia, Nutritional Status, and Frailty in Older Patients with Cancer
Doğan Akagündüz, Diğdem; Şahin, Hilal; Akagündüz, Baran
Sarcopenia, malnutrition, and frailty frequently coexist in older adults with cancer, adversely affecting treatment tolerance, functional independence, and survival. While comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) is the gold standard for frailty evaluation, its resource-intensive nature limits routine use, and simple tools are needed. This cross-sectional study included 291 patients aged ≥70 years with histologically confirmed cancer, evaluated at a oncology outpatient clinic between January and November 2024. Sarcopenia was defined according to EWGSOP2 criteria: handgrip strength (HGS) and skeletal muscle index (SMI) by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). Nutritional status was assessed with the Mini Nutritional Assessment–Short Form (MNA-SF), and frailty was defined as G8 ≤ 14. Additional measures included SARC-F, Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), and Geriatric Depression Scale. The median age was 74 years, and 53% were male. Possible sarcopenia was identified in 39.5%, confirmed sarcopenia in 33.7%, severe sarcopenia in 26.8%. Nutritional risk was observed in 66.7%, and frailty in 44.7%. Frailty correlated strongly with nutritional status and moderately with muscle strength and mass. In multivariable analysis, low HGS, low SMI, nutritional risk, and depression independently predicted frailty. ROC analysis showed, G8 with HGS and nutritional assessment improved predictive accuracy. These findings highlight that simple measures enhance frailty detection and may support personalized care.

Background: Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a widely distributed viral haemorrhagic fever with expanding geographic range. As new regions encounter the disease, clinicians must make high-stakes decisions despite limited standardised management frameworks. Methods: In this multicentre, modified Delphi study, infectious diseases specialists were recruited from 19 centres in Türkiye via an open call through the professional communication channels of the Turkish Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (known as KLİMİK). Eligibility was determined based on self-reported clinical experience. Eligible participants reported managing more than ten patients with CCHF as primary physicians, with no additional demographic or professional exclusion criteria applied. The Delphi process included three sequential rounds of anonymous online surveys (between Sept 26 2025, and Jan 1, 2026) and an interim structured clarification meeting (Nov 28–29, 2025), to map areas of agreement and heterogeneity across diagnosis, monitoring, therapeutics, and exposure management. Statements were analysed using Likert-scale methodology. Responses were summarised using medians, interquartile ranges, and proportions of agreement. Consensus levels were defined a priori. Findings: Of 45 ID specialists invited to participate in Round 1, 35 completed the questionnaire and were included in the analysis (78% response rate). All 35 eligible participants were invited to Round 2, and 32 (91%) completed the questionnaire. All 32 participants completed Round 3, with no attrition between Rounds 2 and 3. All participants reported experience of managing more than ten patients with CCHF; ∼85% of participants reported managing at least 50 confirmed cases. In total, 146 candidate statements were evaluated, of which 72 achieved early consensus in Round 1. Following iterative refinement, 39 of 56 statements (69.6%) met predefined consensus criteria in the final round, including eight with very high agreement and 22 with high agreement. Strong convergence was observed for early molecular testing and risk-based hospitalisation, ribavirin initiation within 4 days of symptom onset in confirmed cases, risk-adapted transfusion strategies guided by bleeding severity, and post-exposure prophylaxis after high-risk occupational exposure. Persistent heterogeneity remained regarding ribavirin initiation beyond the early symptomatic window, immunomodulatory therapies, and transfusion de-escalation strategies in selected scenarios. Interpretation: These findings should not be interpreted as formal guidelines. By transparently quantifying expert agreement and non-consensus, this study synthesises specialist clinical experience from a high incidence country and delineates areas of convergence and ongoing uncertainty relevant to both endemic and newly affected regions. This study aims to investigate the age and sex-related variations in somatotype among older adults in Türkiye using the Heath-Carter method. Anthropometric measurements were taken from 2128 participants (1,009 males and 1119 females) aged 65 and over, selected through stratified sampling from the seven regions of Türkiye. The findings indicated that the most prevalent somatotype in both sexes was Endo-Mesomorph, accounting for 50% of males and 58.1% of females. With advancing age, a decrease was observed in body weight, height, Body Mass Index (BMI), and body fat percentage in both sexes. Age-related remodeling of body composition was further reflected in somatotype patterns: while endomorphy declined in males, both endomorphy and mesomorphy decreased progressively in females. Across all age groups, mesomorphy remained more dominant than endomorphy, suggesting relative preservation of muscularity. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that the Endo-Mesomorph somatotype is predominant among older adults in Türkiye, with notable age- and sex-related differences: age-related changes include a decline in endomorphy in males, while both endomorphy and mesomorphy decrease in females. These results offer new evidence from a large Turkish cohort and align with international findings on age-related body composition remodeling, supporting the development of tailored, culturally relevant interventions for healthy aging.

Ateş, Sema; Avşar, Gülçin
Generation Z has grown up in the digital age, leading to different learning styles compared to previous generations. Therefore, traditional methods may not be sufficient to capture their attention. This study aimed to examine the effect of reinforcement using Gimkit in nursing education on students’ academic success and motivation. This study is a quasi-experimental study with a control group. The study was conducted in May 2022 with 109 first-year nursing students at a public university in Turkey, and the participants were divided into experimental and control groups. Both received the same theoretical instruction on “individual hygiene practices.” The experimental group used Gimkit for reinforcement; the control group used a traditional Q&A method with the same questions. Achievement tests and the Instructional Materials Motivation Survey (IMMS) were applied before and after the lecture, and the test was re-administered a week later. The experimental group scored significantly higher than the control group on achievement tests (P=.031 and .001), but no significant difference was found in motivation scores (P=.704). Gimkit reinforcement improved academic success but not motivation.

Altıparmak, Serkan; Kars, Ayhan
BACKGROUND: The pan-immune-inflammation value (PIV) is a recently described novel biomarker obtained from complete blood count parameters. Systemic biomarkers have been investigated in a number of studies aimed at confirming the role of the inflammatory process in the etiology of Bell’s palsy (BP) and elucidating the association with prognosis. This study investigated the relationship between PIV and BP. METHODS: Sixty patients aged 18-75 years presenting with BP and 51 healthy controls with similar age and sex profiles were included in this retrospective study. Pan-immune-inflammation value and systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) values were calculated and compared between the 2 groups. The severity of paralysis in the BP group was recorded according to the House–Brackmann (HB) grading system and compared between the 2 groups. RESULTS: Both PIV and SII values were significantly higher in the BP group (P < .001). Intra-group comparisons based on paralysis grading revealed a significant difference in SII values in grades IV and V (P = .04). CONCLUSION: The findings suggest that PIV may represent a useful and readily available biomarker reflecting systemic inflammation in patients with BP. However, larger prospective studies are now required to confirm its diagnostic and prognostic values.
