Among the physical fitness workouts; whereas the weight training is one of the most prevalent physical activities used for men, the zumba dance workouts has become popular for women in the last decade, as an entertaining alternative approach. In this research, the effects of the weight training on the body composition in men and the zumba dance workouts in women have been studied. 90 sedentary individuals (44 men, average age: 30.70 +/- 6.44; 46 women, average age: 29.13 +/- 5.80) attending a fitness center had received weight training and zumba classes (during 2 months, 3 days each week, each session 45/60 minutes). The exercise intensity that had been kept low at the beginning was increased in the following weeks for both programs. The body composition analysis have been carried out at the start and then monthly, through bioelectrical impedence method. During the process; the medical histories of the participants as well as their levels of readiness for and participation to the physical activities have been monitored. Both sex have been evaluated separately. The descriptive statistics techniques and repeated measures ANOVA have been used to analyze the data. At the end of the study, the positive effects of both exercise programs on the body compositions of the sedentary men and women have been observed. As a conclusion, it has been recorded with the present study once again that the weight training is still an efficient and valid method for men and also, the zumba workouts are efficient for women as a popular method.

Objective: Determine the association between the bone mineral density and traumatic brain injury (TBI). Materials and Methods: Twenty-two patients with TBI included to the study. Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry measurements which determines the femur neck and L1-4 vertebrate T scores in patients was performed via Lunar Prodigy DPX system. Clinical parameters such as types of involvements (plegia), upper-lower extremity spasticity values, presence of heterotypic ossification, ambulation levels were determined and their relations with femur neck and L1-4 vertebrate T scores were examined with Mann-Whitney U Test. Results: In the comparison of sub groups of type of plegia (tetraplegic/hemi-paraplegic), lower extremity spasticity values [Ascworth score 0/1-2-3-4), presence of heterotopic ossification no statistically significant (p>0.05) difference was found in the femur neck and L1-4 vertebrate T scores. On the other hand, in the subgroups determined according to ambulatory levels of the patients (confined to bed-wheelchair/ambulated (orthesis-hand support-independent)] significant difference was observed in the femur neck T scores (p=0.044). Femur neck T scores were significantly high in ambulated patients (p=0.044). Conclusion: In TBI cases ambulation level is a factor which significantly affect bone mineral density. It is necessary to ambulate patients with potential as soon as possible and to plan alternative approaches in patient could not be ambulated.

Erzeybek, Mustafa Said; Kaya, Fatih; Yüksel, Oguzhan; Gunduz, HB; Masal, E; Caliskan, H

In this research, the effect of the hand grip and finger strengths on the power development between the friction and petrissage techniques the massage manipulations - have been studied. To the study that has been structured as a single group pretest/post test, 36 healthy males who are the students of the University of Dumlupmar, Academy of Physical Education and Sports and who take massage courses (age = 19.72 +/- 1.56 years (average +/- Sd)) have been included. The practical massage course has continued for 12 weeks, two days a week for a total of one hour and the hand grip strength of both hands (right hand grip strength = RHG, left hand grip strength = LHG) and the grip strength of both fmgers (right finger strength = RF, left finger strength = LF) have been recorded at the beginning. For the measurements carried out before and later of the study with regard to the hand grip strength, a Takkei branded hand dynamometer and with regard to the finger grip strength a (baseline) branded pinch meter have been used. All measurements have been repeated twice and for the analysis, the average values obtained from two deads have been used. For statistical analysis, with regard to the changes in the pre test - post test finger strength and hand grip strength, paired-samples t test has been used. The significance limit has been defined as p<0.05. For all values, the average, standard error and standard deviation have been used. It has been observed that the both hands' finger strengths and both hands' grip strengths have developed from the pre test phase to the post test phase (p<0.01) and these developments are similar for both hands' grip strengths and both hands' grip strengths (p>0.05). It is possible to report that massaging regularly with both hands is efficient for the development of the finger and hand grip strengths; especially, with regard to the friction (circular movements that are generally carried out with fingers) and petrissage (kneading that is generally carried out with the palm) techniques.

Ayar, Arif; Çolak, Deniz Altun; Uysal, Handan

Chloral hydrate (CH) is commonly used as a sedative and a hypnotic in pediatric medicine. In this study, the effects of CH on various developmental stages of Drosophila melanogaster were investigated. Different concentrations of CH (0.1; 0.3; 0.5 and 1 mg/mL) were used during development of the flies. Maternal toxicity due to increasing the concentration of CH was observed as a large number of adult flies died. When the F1 progeny of the control and application groups were compared, CH was found to extend the process of metamorphosis and to decrease the total number of offspring. The embryotoxic effects on the offspring and an increase in the number of malformed offspring was identified as depending on feeding. It was found that the difference between the groups was significantly important (p < 0.05).

Education and Visual Information Improves Effectiveness of Ultrasound-Guided Local Injections on Shoulder Pain and Associated Anxiety Level: A Randomized Controlled Study

Karkucak, Murat; Cilesizoglu, Nurce; Capkin, Erhan; Can, Ipek; Batmaz, Ibrahim; Kerimoglu, Servet; Onder, Mustafa Avni; Karaca, Adem; Ayar, Ahmet

Objective Local injections are widely used in patients with a painful shoulder. The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible impact of patients' visual information on the effectiveness of ultrasound (US)-guided local injections on anxiety levels and shoulder pain. Design A total of 151 patients, scheduled for local injection owing to shoulder pain, were randomly assigned into two groups in a consecutive order. Patients in group I (n = 72) were provided information related to US findings and allowed to watch the procedures from the monitor, whereas patients in group II (n = 79) received the injection only without any collaboration. Data were collected from both groups immediately before and after injections through visual analog scale and questionnaire (the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory [STAI] forms 1 and 2). Results US-guided local injections provided significant improvement of anxiety and pain in both groups, irrespective of providing visual information. Group I and group II comparisons with respect to the visual analog scale, STAI 1, and STAI 2 yielded significant difference only for postinjection STAI 2 in group I (P = 0.006). Intragroup comparisons revealed significant differences between preinjection and postinjection values (group I: visual analog scale, P = 0.001; STAI form 1, P = 0.001; STAI form 2, P = 0.002; group II: visual analog scale, P = 0.001; STAI form 1, P = 0.002; STAI form 2, P = 0.042). There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of postinjection satisfaction levels from the procedures (P = 0.824). Conclusions Performing US-guided shoulder injections with patient visual information provides positive contributions to coping with pain and anxiety. In particular, the patient collaboration-based US-guided injections have positive consequences on patients' long-standing "trait-anxiety" levels.

A case of brucellosis and crimean-congo hemorrhagic fever coinfection in an endemic area; [Endemik Bir Bölgede Bruselloz ve Kirim Kongo Kanamali Ateşi Koenfeksiyonu Olgusu]

Karakeçili, Faruk; Çikman, Aytekin; Akin, Hicran; Gülhan, Banş; Özçiçek, Adalet

Brucellosis, a zoonotic disease which is especially seen in developing countries is still an important public health problem worldwide. Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is another zoonotic disease that transmits to humans by infected tick bites as well as exposure to blood or tissue from infected animals. Both of the diseases are common among persons who live in rural areas and deal with animal husbandry. Since brucellosis usually presents with non-specific clinical symptoms and may easily be confused with many other diseases, the diagnosis of those infections could be delayed or misdiagnosed. In this report, a case of coinfection of brucellosis and CCHF has been presented to emphasize the possibility of association of these infections. A 70-year-old female patient with a history of dealing with animal husbandry in a rural area admitted to our hospital with the complaints of fever, malaise, generalized body and joint pains, and headache. Her complaints had progressed within the past two days. She also reported nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea. She denied any history of tick bites. Her physical examination was significant for the presence of 38.8°C fever, increased bowel sounds and splenomegaly. Laboratory analysis revealed leukopenia, thrombocytopenia and high levels of liver enzymes. The patient was admitted to our service with the prediagnosis of CCHF. Serum sample was sent to the Department of Microbiology Reference Laboratory at Public Health Agency of Turkey for CCHF testing. During patient's hospitalization in service, more detailed history was confronted and it was learned that she had fatigue, loss of appetite, sweating, joint pain, and intermittent fever complaints were continuing within a month and received various antibiotic treatments. The tests for brucellosis were conducted and positive results for Brucella Rose Bengal test, tube agglutination (1/160 titers) and immune capture test with Coombs (1/320 titers) were determined. The tests performed in the reference laboratory revealed CCHF virus-specific IgM positivity by immunofluorescence assay and viral RNA positivity by real-time polymerase chain reaction. Two blood cultures remained sterile during hospitalization, this situation was considered to be the cause of antibiotic usage in the last month. Doxycycline and rifampicin therapy were initiated for brucellosis, and close monitoring with supportive therapy for CCHF. On the second day of admission, the patient was transfused with 5 units random platelets and 2 units fresh frozen plasma due to dramatic decline of platelet count (37.000/mm3). Early clinical response to brucellosis therapy was confirmed with resolution of fever and improved blood counts and the treatment was completed in eight weeks on an outpatient basis. No other problems were encountered during follow-ups after completion of treatment. According to accessible literature search, coinfection of brucellosis and CCHF has not been reported previously. In conclusion, as our country is endemic for both brucellosis and CCHF, it is important to consider both infections in the differential diagnosis. Physicians should keep in mind that, likewise in our case, coinfection of brucellosis and CCHF can be detected.

Our management of anesthesia in elective and emergency cesarean surgery: A retrospective evaluation of the last ten years; [Elektif ve acil sezaryen ameliyatlarında anestezi yönetimimiz: Son on yılın retrospektif değerlendirilmesi]

Özmen, Özgür; Arslan, Zakir; Ekinci, Mürsel; Tör, İbrahim; Kara, Duygu; Karakaya, Muhammet Ahmet

The choice of anesthesia used in cesarean operations is determined by the patient’s clinical status, the experience of the anesthetist, the urgency of surgery and the patient’s wishes. This study evaluated anesthetic practices in cesarean surgery performed in the preceding 10 years in our Maternity Hospital, Turkey. Hospital computer system records and file archives between 2006 and 2015 were screened. Anesthesia techniques used in elective and emergency cesarean surgery were recorded. The distribution of these techniques by years was then analyzed. A total of 28.986 cesarean sections (cases) were performed in our hospital in 2006-2015. Eighty-four percent of them were emergency and 16% of them were elective CSs. General anesthesia was used in 4848 (17%) and regional anesthesia in 24.138 (83%) patients, while combined spinal-epidural anesthesia was used in 2% and epidural anesthesia in 1% of the patients. Regional anesthesia was used frequently in our clinic similar to European countries. Spinal anesthesia was the most commonly preferred method of regional anesthesia in our clinic. However, especially in emergency cases combined spinal-epidural or epidural anesthesia was not applied. We think that combined spinal-epidural anesthesia should be applied more frequently in elective cases.
