Yavuz, Sevtap Caglar; Yavuz, Emre; Ozdokur, Kemal Volkan

In the present work, ZnMoO4/Ag2WO4 nanocomposite was synthesized via facile hydrothermal and chemical precipitation method for determination of photocatalytic performance on organic contaminants such as methylene blue and trimethoprim. The synthesized nano-photocatalyst was characterized using various instrumental techniques. Photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue and trimethoprim by the samples was realized under UV light irradiation. The obtained results demonstrated that photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue by ZnMoO4/Ag2WO4 was 99.6% in 30 min. The bare ZnMoO4 produced 57.8% and Ag2WO4 produced 76.7% photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue in 60 min. The synthesized ZnMoO4/Ag2WO4 nanocomposite, about which there is little information on remediation of organic pollutants, had possessed the outstanding photocatalytic degradation performance on methylene blue and trimethoprim due to pseudo first order kinetic.

Investigation of freeze-thaw performance for sustainable rubberized concrete composites with different water to cement ratios

    Bulut, H. Alperen; Kandil, U.

This research aimed to evaluate the freeze-thaw performance of waste rubber substituted concretes with two different water/cement ratios. Different ratios of waste rubber were used in concrete by substituting fine and coarse aggregates. The weight and compressive strength losses of rubberized concrete and control concretes subjected to freeze-thaw were experimentally examined. The changes in the microstructure of the concrete were analyzed by using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Furthermore, ANOVA was used to test the significance of the selected parameters statistically. The control concrete with a 0.5 water/cement ratio had eight times higher mass loss compared to the rubberized concrete. The SEM analysis results were consistent with the freeze-thaw test results. ANOVA that the waste rubber substitution ratio had a significant effect on the freeze-thaw performance of rubberized concrete. Water/cement ratio, together with the waste rubber substitution ratio, is an effective parameter on the freeze-thaw resistance of rubberized concrete.

Assessing the influence of green innovation and environmental policy stringency on CO2 emissions in BRICS

Çetinkaya, Ozlem Akguc; Çatik, Abdurrahman Nazif; Balli, Esra; Manga, Muge; Destek, Mehmet Akif

This article examines the effect of environmental policy stringency and green innovation on CO2 emissions in the BRICS nations, using annual data from 1990 to 2019 utilizing panel FMOLS and DOLS estimators and Method of Moments Quantile Regression (MMQR). To this end, we estimate an equation in which CO2 emissions are explained by GDP, trade openness, nonrenewable and renewable energy consumption, the environmental stringency index, and green innovation, as measured by the number of patent applications for environmentally related inventions. FMOLS and DOLS results reveal that GDP, nonrenewable energy consumption, and trade openness have a positive effect on environmental pollution, whereas improvements in renewable energy consumption and environmental regulations lead to a drop in CO2 emissions. However, green innovation does not have a significant effect on CO2 emissions. MMQR estimates demonstrate that the GDP has a positive effect on CO2 emissions across all quantiles, suggesting that a higher degree of economic growth is associated with higher emissions. Based on findings, empirical evidence suggests that BRICS countries should follow the policies encouraging the reduction of nonrenewable energy consumption in the region without harming the development of the economy. Besides, policymakers should promote renewable energy consumption and enhance investment in green innovation to achieve sustainable development and environmental quality.

Investigation of the Mechanical Properties of Self-compacting Concretes Containing Mineral Additives Produced by Substituting Fine Recycled Aggregate in Different Rates

    Kandil, Ufuk; Erdoğdu, Şakir

In the study, the effect of fine recycled concrete aggregate (FRCA) replaced by natural fine aggregate on some mechanical properties of self-compacting concrete (SCC) containing different types and amounts of mineral additives was evaluated. In the concretes produced for this purpose, natural fine aggregate was replaced with FRCA at the ratios of 35%, 70% and 100% by weight. For comparison, concretes without FRCA were also produced. Three different mineral additives, namely fly ash (FA), metakaolin (MK) and silica fume (SF), were used in different ratios. In order to determine the fresh state properties of concretes, unit weight, slumpflow, T500 time, J-ring and sieve segregation tests were carried out, while compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, Böhme abrasion and dynamic elasticity modulus determination tests were carried out on hardened concretes. Based on the findings obtained, there is no significant adverse effect on the mechanical properties of concrete with 35% FRCA replacement. However, when FRCA is used at higher ratios, the negative effect on mechanical properties becomes evident. In particular, Böhme abrasion is quite high at high FRCA replacement ratios. Provided that the conditions in which the research was carried out are valid, the negative effects of FRCA substitution on the mechanical properties of concrete can be eliminated by changing the type and combination ratios of mineral additives used.

Fracture behavior of warm mix asphalt mixtures incorporating Cecabase and recycled concrete aggregate: An experimental and numerical assessment

Çolak, Muhammed Ali; Keleş, Ömer Faruk; Baş, Fatih İrfan; Demi̇ri̇z, Ahmet Oğuz

This study investigates the fracture performance of warm mix asphalt (WMA) mixtures modified with Cecabase RT BIO10 and various recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) proportions using laboratory tests and finite element modeling. Semi-Circular Bending (SCB) tests at –15 °C under Mode I loading were performed to measure fracture toughness (KIC), fracture energy (GF, pre-peak and post-peak), stiffness, and flexibility indices. Unlike many prior studies relying on a single approach, fracture toughness was calculated through all major analytical methods and validated with ANSYS finite element simulations. Results showed that increasing Cecabase content notably improved fracture resistance, while higher RCA levels reduced mechanical properties due to the porous nature of RCA. Fracture energy analysis indicated that post-peak deformation parameters correlated more strongly with GF than stiffness indices, highlighting the importance of ductility in asphalt performance. Correlation analyses revealed tensile strength (TS) and tensile stiffness index (TSI) largely evolve independently from post-peak flexibility indicators such as flexibility index (FI), toughness index (TI), and crack resistance index (CRI). Among mixtures tested, the combination of 0.50 % Cecabase and 10 % RCA exhibited the most balanced performance with high TSI, TS, and GF values. These findings emphasize the need to optimize both additive and RCA content to enhance WMA mixtures’ mechanical integrity and sustainability. The proposed approach offers a practical and environmentally friendly framework for designing durable asphalt mixtures suited to low-temperature pavements.

A new approach for lightweight polymer concrete production: Determination of the influence of resin and perlite types on the mechanical performance of polymer concrete

Ciminli, Ahmet Taha; Bulut, H. Alperen

The interest in perlite is increasing significantly in the construction sector in terms of both energy and material in the construction of efficient buildings. This interest arises from the growing demand for environmentally friendly building materials that can mitigate the environmental impact of high cement production. In order for polymer concretes, which have many advantages over traditional concrete, to help reduce damages under earthquake loads and reduce costs, lightweight polymer concrete production should be done using lightweight aggregates. In this study, a new approach for lightweight polymer concrete production was presented for the first time, and the aim was to determine the effect of the compatibility of natural perlite and expanded perlite aggregates with polyester and vinylester resins on the mechanical performance of polymer concrete. For this purpose, natural and expanded perlites were used as fine aggregate in polymer concretes instead of quartz aggregate at the ratios of 0 %, 5 %, and 10 %. As binder materials, unsaturated polyester resin and vinylester resin were selected. Fresh density, compressive, flexural, and splitting tensile strengths, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), modulus of elasticity, and toughness tests were performed on polymer concretes after 7, 28, and 90 days. Furthermore, scanning electron microscope (SEM) analyses were performed to investigate the changes in the microstructure of the polymer concretes. The compressive, flexural, and splitting tensile strength results of polyester resin polymer concretes produced with 5 % natural perlite aggregate were higher than the control concrete. Very high correlations were found between the strength results of polymer concretes and UPV values for all days. Modulus of elasticity and toughness values of vinylester resin polymer concretes with natural perlite aggregate were higher than those of polyester resin polymer concretes. SEM analysis results and experimental results were consistent with each other. Considering all the experimental results, it was revealed that the ideal perlite type and ratio is 5 % natural perlite aggregate. Unlike the literature, and in a unique way, lightweight polymer concretes with high mechanical performance polyester/vinylester resin, especially with natural perlite aggregate, could be produced with a much lower resin ratio (15 %). Thanks to perlite, more sustainable, environmentally friendly, and energy-efficient lightweight polymer concretes can be produced, offering alternative solutions to traditional construction materials.

Eco-Friendly Stabilization of Coarse-Grained Soil Using Gum Rosin and Natural Fiber

    Akoğuz, Harun

Cement and its derivatives are frequently used as traditional construction materials for soil improvement. However, the most commonly used ordinary Portland cement can significantly affect the ecological environment. This study proposes an innovative alternative improvement method to stabilize soil by incorporating gum rosin (GR), a natural polymer, into the soil. For this purpose, the improvement of soil with different grain diameters (G1 and G2) by incorporating different proportions of sisal fiber (0.2%, 0.4%, 0.6%, and 0.8%) into different proportions of GR (5%, 10%, and 15%) was investigated. The focus of the study was the treatment of GR natural polymer to the soils by heating as an innovative method and to determine the characteristic changes in the strength and permeability of the soil. Firstly, the setting time of this method was determined. After that, unconfined compressive strength (UCS), ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), and permeability tests were performed on the samples subjected to different curing times (1, 7, and 28 days). According to the results obtained from the experiments, it was determined that the setting time of the samples reached a stable state after one day of curing. The average strengths of G1 and G2 soils were 3.72 MPa and 2.48 MPa, respectively, and it was observed that the decrease in grain diameter contributed positively to the increase in strength. In addition, it was determined that both the strength and the failure stress increased with the inclusion of fiber. Moreover, a high coefficient of R2 = 0.9428 was obtained from the variation of the UPV test and UCS test, and the usability of the UPV test results in estimating the strength was evaluated. According to the permeability test results, a negligible decrease in permeability was observed after the treatment, and in this case, it was evaluated that this method could be used in many different engineering fields, such as permeable asphalt pavements. The findings suggest that this natural polymer may have potential in certain engineering applications, though its wider use requires further exploration.

Experimental study on compressive strength of clay soil stabilized with construction and demolition waste-based geopolymer

    Isik, Adem

This study investigated soil stabilization on clay soil using construction and demolition waste (CDW) as a geopolymer binder. The mechanical performance of stabilized soil was investigated under various CDW-based geopolymer amounts, curing times, and alkali activator concentrations. Unconfined compressive strength (UCS) testing was conducted to determine the shear strength of soil samples. The UCS capacities of soil samples were approximately 8.1, 12.2, and 14.6 times higher than the unstabilized soil sample for 7, 28, and 91 days of curing. Moreover, it is observed that increasing the molarity of alkali activators, especially NaOH, enhanced the UCS capacity of geopolymer-stabilized soil. However, using Na2SiO3 in combination with NaOH had a negative impact on UCS capacity. Because the water in the Na2SiO3 content increased the water content of the soil sample and caused it to have a softer consistency, this was also observed with the increase in activator solution to binder (s/b) ratios. SEM–EDX and XRD tests were performed to investigate the microstructure of stabilized samples. These tests showed that there was agreement with the UCS test results. Finally, a Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) analysis were performed to estimate UCS capacity of geopolymer-stabilized soils.

Performance evaluation of waste glass in soil improvement: Influence of particle size of waste glass on mechanical, microstructural, and durability characteristics

    Akoğuz, Harun

The accumulation of waste glass (WG) from construction and demolition waste is detrimental to the environment due to its imperishable nature; therefore, it is crucial to investigate a sustainable way to recycle and reuse the WG. To address this issue, this study examined the mechanical strength, microstructural characteristics, and environmental durability—specifically under wet-dry (WD) and freeze-thaw (FT) cycles—of WG obtained from construction and demolition waste, with a focus on its suitability as a binding material for soil improvement applications. Firstly, sand and WG were mixed, and an alkali solution was injected into the mixture, considering various parameters, including WG particle size, mixing proportions, sodium hydroxide (NaOH) concentration, and curing time. Subsequently, the effect of WG grain sizes on micromorphology characteristics and mineralogical phases was evaluated before and after the treatment through X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV). The results revealed that reducing the WG particle size and increasing the WG/S ratio significantly improved the strength of the WG-treated samples. Additionally, decreasing the NaOH concentration and extending the curing time also positively influenced their strength. The UCS test results indicate that the particle size of WG significantly influenced the strength development of the samples, as the maximum compressive strength increased from 1.42 MPa to 7.82 MPa with the decrease in particle size. Although the maximum UCS values of the samples varied with different WG particle sizes, the values exceed the minimum criterion of 0.80 MPa required for use as a road substructure, as specified in the ASTM D4609 standard. Moreover, as WG grain size decreased, more geopolymer gels formed, continuing to fill the voids and making the overall structure denser, and the changes during geopolymerization were confirmed by XRD, SEM, FTIR, and UPV analysis. The optimum WG/S ratio was found to be 20 %, with strength increasing by approximately 3.88 times higher as the WG/S ratio shifted from 5 % to 20 %. In addition, the optimum NaOH concentration was determined to be 10 M, as higher molarities led to a decrease in strength. Moreover, UPV results indicate that WG-treated sand soils exhibited UPV values 9.4–13 times greater than untreated soils. The WD and FT test results indicate that WG-treated samples experienced more rapid disintegration in the WD cycle than in the FT cycle; however, a decrease in WG particle size resulted in reduced disintegration effects in both WD and FT conditions. In both the FT and WD cycles, the declining trend exhibited a stable tendency around the eighth cycle. Nevertheless, the WD cycling damage considerably intensified disintegration, causing a profound deterioration in the structural integrity of the samples. As a result, repeated WD cycles lead to the formation of microcracks, which progressively weaken soil aggregation and reduce the overall strength of the samples. Consequently, this green and simple soil improvement technique can provide more inspiration for reducing waste and building material costs through efficient use of construction and demolition waste.

Timing Matters, Not Just the Treatment: Phenological-Stage-Specific Effects of Seaweed and Ethanol Applications on Postharvest Quality of ‘Tarsus Beyazı’ Grapes

Tarım, Güzin; Karakus, Sinem; Keskin, Nurhan; Hatterman-Valenti, Harlene; Kaya, Ozkan

In the context of increasing consumer demand for high-quality, residue-free fruits and the growing emphasis on sustainable postharvest technologies, identifying effective, eco-friendly treatments to maintain grape quality during storage has become a critical focus in modern viticulture. Over the course of this study, we examined the influence of seaweed extract (derived from Ascophyllum nodosum) and ethanol-based postharvest treatments on the postharvest quality of the ‘Tarsus Beyazı’ grape. The seaweed extract was applied at six specific phenological stages according to the BBCH scale: BBCH 13 (3rd–4th leaf stage, 0.40%), BBCH 60 (first flower sheath opening, 0.50%), BBCH 71 (fruit set, 0.50%), BBCH 75 (chickpea-sized berries, 0.50%), BBCH 81 (start of ripening, 0.60%), and BBCH 89 (harvest maturity, 0.60%). After harvest, grape clusters were subjected to four different postharvest treatments: untreated control, control + ethanol (20% ethanol immersion for 10 s), seaweed extract alone (preharvest applications only), and seaweed extract + ethanol (combining both preharvest and postharvest treatments). Grapes were stored at 0–1 °C and 90–95% RH for three weeks, followed by a shelf-life evaluation period of three days at 20 °C and 60–65% RH. The findings revealed that seaweed treatments, especially when applied during cluster formation and berry development, effectively mitigated physiological deterioration, preserving stem turgidity and enhancing berry firmness. In contrast, ethanol showed variable responses, occasionally exerting negative effects, with only marginal benefits observed when applied at optimal developmental stages. Both the type and timing of application emerged as critical determinants of key quality attributes such as weight loss, decay incidence, and must properties (TSS, pH, TA). Correlation and heat map analyses indicated the interrelationships among these parameters and the differential impacts of treatments. These results suggest that phenological-stage-specific seaweed applications hold significant potential as a sustainable strategy to extend the storage life and maintain the market quality of ‘Tarsus Beyazı’ grapes.

Investigation of Freeze-Thaw Properties of High Plasticity Clay Soil Improved with Lime and Sodium Alginate Biopolymer

    Akoğuz, Harun; Teber, Dilber

In this study, the effect of sodium alginate biopolymer and the effectiveness of sodium alginate biopolymer combined with lime in improving a high-plasticity clay soil were investigated. For this purpose, 0%, 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5% biopolymers and 0%, 2%, 4%, and 6% lime were added to the clay soil. At the end of the 7 and 28 day curing period, the strength results were evaluated with unconfined compressive strength tests. In order to examine the effects of environmental factors, the improved soil samples were exposed to freeze-thaw cycles for 5 and 10 cycles. As a result, it was observed that sodium alginate biopolymers had higher unconfined compressive strengths compared to pure samples at the end of the curing periods. As a result of freeze-thaw cycles, it was determined that the biopolymer additive improved the strength results. When using biopolymer with lime, it was determined as a result of strength tests and freeze-thaw cycles that biopolymer increased the effectiveness of lime in soil improvement. As a result, it has been evaluated that sodium alginate, an environmentally friendly biopolymer, may have positive contributions to engineering applications in the improvement of clay soils.

Exploring Antioxidant and Genotoxic Activities of Silver Nanoparticles Synthesized from Karaerik Grape Leaves: A Green Approach

    Altun Çolak, Deniz; Bayğu, Gürhan

Nowadays, plant extract-mediated biosynthesis of nanoparticles has gained prominence as a pivotal research domain. Silver nanoparticles are traditionally synthesized using highly toxic and ecologically hazardous chemical and physical methods. The emerging green synthesis approach offers more eco-friendly alternatives while reducing production costs. Hence, the present study opted for a nature-friendly green synthesis method to produce silver nanoparticles. Silver nanoparticles were characterized using UV-visible spectroscopy (UV-VIS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The reaction involved the treatment of AgNO3 (5 mM) with an aqueous extract of Karaerik grape leaf. Subsequently, the potentially toxic, genotoxic, and antioxidant effects of purchased chemically produced silver nanoparticles (AgNP(c)) and silver nanoparticles (AgNP(b)) that we synthesized using the green method were investigated on Drosophila melanogaster transheterozygous larvae. The study employed 72 ± 4 hour-old larvae bearing the recessive flr3 and mwh determinant genes on their third chromosomes. Exposure scenarios included 1 mM Ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS), AgNPs (1.25, 2.5, and 5 mg/mL), and EMS+ AgNPs. Interestingly, the EMS+ AgNPs combination reduced total oxidant status while increasing total antioxidant status significantly compared to EMS alone. To assess genotoxic effects, mutant trichomes resulting from genetic changes in the development of wing imaginal discs were examined. Furthermore, the AgNP synthesized through green synthesis demonstrated antioxidant properties and displayed no genotoxicity. In conclusion, the research highlights the promising potential of green-synthesized silver nanoparticles, which provide an eco-friendly and safe method for various applications.

Water activity, pH, TBARS, purge accumulation, and microbiological analyses were performed during the storage. QS3, TS2, and TS3 treatments got appreciated (7.0-7.4 out of 10) sensory scores, while GS3 scored low acceptability (4.0 out of 10) points. Adding food waste significantly reduced purge accumulation; the average purge accumulation of the control sample was 3.70% which is approximately two times higher than food waste added samples. The average TBARS value of the control sample was determined as 0.31 mg MA/kg, and the food waste-added samples were found between 0.57-0.65 mg MA/kg during storage. Total mesophilic aerobic bacteria and yeast-mold load were higher in TS2 and TS3 products; microbial load and TBARS values of food waste affected the product quality. Also, water activity, microbial growth, and purge accumulation amount affected each other during storage.

The use of cutting waste fabrics in garment design processes with natural dye applications: a fabrication model

    Sari, Safiye; Elibol, Betul

The idea of designing products from fabric waste is not new in clothing applications. The main idea of the applications lies in the development of production methods that do not harm humans and the environment. The demand for clothing products is increasing, which does not pollute the environment and respects natural resources. Which increases environmental sensitivity with consumer awareness. This demand has increased efforts to evaluate textile waste with sustainable methods. Clothing collections with high added value prepared with waste materials are becoming more important in the designer-producer and consumer triangle day by day. Nowadays, natural dye applications with waste fabrics are evaluated as a different approach for clothing designers. And the rich images on waste fabrics that are obtained with these applications. In the study were conducted textile surface experiments with sage, tea, linden, pear peel, ginger, turmeric and cinnamon peel on waste fabric Sile cloth using different mordant materials. The method of the research was carried out in two stages. At the first stage, coloring recipes with the application of natural dyes were created. In the second stage, the design processes are included in the capsule collection. And the collection has been completed with 3D modeling and prototyping, which are one of the indispensable applications of the sector. The collection is aimed with the development of a production model with a strong environmental aspect. The findings from the research have shown that the garment design process has developed differently from the standard production models of natural dye applications with waste fabrics. The biggest difference is the uniquenessfeature brought to the clothing collections.

The photocatalysis process, which is effective, economical, and environmentally friendly can overcome rapidly increasing environmental problems, has shown rapid development in recent years. Nontoxic, low-cost natural minerals are often used in photocatalysis processes that remove organic pollution from wastewater. In this study, a selective method for the removal of crystal violet (CV) from aqueous solutions using nanocomposite of nickel oxide/zinc oxide nanoparticles (NiO/ZnO) supported on kaolinite photocatalyst was investigated. The raw kaolinite, bare NiO, bare ZnO and nanocomposite samples were characterized by the XRD, TEM, SEM-EDX, XPS and FTIR techniques. The photocatalytic performances of kaolinite-NiOZnO (K-NiO/ZnO) nanocomposite and bare samples were also investigated and comparatively evaluated by the photodegradation of CV (cationic dye) dye under visible light irradiation. The effects of various parameters such as the dosage of photocatalysis, contact time, and initial dye concentration on the rate of removal of dye were investigated and optimized. The kinetics of decolorization by samples can be well described by the pseudo-first-order model. Finally, it can be used in advanced oxidative processes for the degradation of organic pollutants.
