Bayrak, Burak; Yuca, Hafize; Budak, Yasemin Beyza; Alkuyruk, Satuk Buğra; Özer, Elif Beyza; Bona, Gülnur Ekşi; Aydın, Bilge; Karadayı, Mehmet; Gülşahin, Yusuf; Atila, Alptuğ
This study comprehensively evaluated the phytochemical composition, biological activities, and biosafety profile of different organs and processing by-products of Rosa damascena, with particular emphasis on valorizing pruning residues and distillation wastes. Extraction yields varied among plant parts, with leaves (29.69%) and flowers (14.15%) providing higher recoveries than buds (7.98%) and branches (7.91%). FTIR-ATR spectroscopy differentiated lignocellulosic woody tissues from phenolic- and ester-rich floral materials and confirmed the characteristic aliphatic profile of rose oil. Biological activity assays demonstrated strong α-glucosidase inhibition, particularly in flower extracts (IC50: 37 μg/mL), surpassing acarbose, while branches, buds, and leaves also exhibited high activity; in contrast, hydrosol and essential oil showed no measurable inhibition. Antioxidant capacity assays revealed notable radical scavenging and reducing activities, especially in buds, branches, and flowers, whereas hydrosol and essential oil displayed limited effects. Moderate antimicrobial activity was observed mainly against Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans (MIC: 625 μg/mL). LC–MS/MS analysis identified 20 phenolic compounds, with quinic acid as the predominant constituent in buds and flowers. In addition, significant levels of gallic and ellagic acids were detected in distillation wastewater, highlighting the bioactive potential of processing residues. Ames/Salmonella, E. coli WP2, and Allium cepa assays confirmed the absence of genotoxic effects at tested concentrations. Overall, the findings demonstrate that R. damascena organs and industrial by-products represent valuable sources of bioactive compounds, exhibiting in vitro α-glucosidase and α-amylase inhibitory activities associated with potential antidiabetic effects, as well as notable antioxidant capacity, thereby supporting their prospective utilization in functional food and nutraceutical applications.

Gülcan, Halil Erdi; Demirci, Oğuz Kürşat; Erol, Derviş; Tunçer, Erdal
This study evaluates a waste-to-energy diesel concept that co-valorises waste cooking oil and end-of-life tyres by formulating biodiesel–tyre pyrolysis oil blends with small additions of higher alcohols (1-heptanol and n-octanol). Five fuels (B100, B90T10, B85T10H5, B85T10O5 and B80T10H5O5) were tested in a single-cylinder diesel engine. Engine performance, emissions and combined energy–exergy–exergoeconomic indicators were used to assess thermodynamic and economic viability. The quaternary blend B80T10H5O5 achieved the highest mean energy and exergy efficiencies (26.5 % and 24.6 %) and reduced brake-specific fuel consumption by about 5 % relative to neat biodiesel, owing to improved volatility and fuel oxygenation. This benefit was accompanied by higher NOx emissions and the largest specific exergy cost (≈1430 USD GJ−1) at full load. By contrast, the binary blend B90T10 preserved biodiesel-like efficiency while lowering the specific exergy cost of shaft power by roughly 10 %, emerging as the most cost-effective option. Overall, modest shares of tyre pyrolysis oil (10 %) and long-chain alcohols (≤5 %) in waste-oil biodiesel can provide an attractive compromise between energy efficiency, emissions and exergy-based cost, supporting circular-economy-oriented diesel combustion.

Mayda, Sabire; Turan, Ahmet ihsan
The replacement of conventional aggregate in concrete with alternative and waste-based materials has attracted increasing attention due to growing sustainability and waste management concerns. In this study, the combined effects of natural perlite aggregate replacement and fiber reinforcement on the mechanical and microstructural performance of concrete were experimentally investigated. Accordingly, natural perlite aggregate was used to replace conventional stone aggregate at replacement levels of 0%, 30%, 70%, and 100%. In addition, hemp shives and recycled plastic waste, together with commercially available polypropylene (PP) fibers were incorporated at volume fractions of 0.0%, 0.5%, 1.0%, and 1.5% to evaluate the effects of perlite aggregate replacement and fiber reinforcement on the mechanical performance of concrete. After 28 days of curing, compressive strength, elastic modulus, flexural strength, splitting tensile strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), stress-strain behavior and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses were conducted. The results showed that compared with the reference mix, 30% fine perlite replacement increased compressive strength and elastic modulus by ∼6.67% and ∼4.08%, respectively, whereas higher replacement levels (70% and 100%) led to strength reductions of ∼3.51% and ∼9.71% due to the porous structure of perlite and the formation of a weaker interfacial transition zone (ITZ). The optimum ratio for fiber reinforcements was 1.0%, and in terms of fiber type, the highest performance in crack bridging and energy absorption was observed in the PP-fiber-reinforced samples. At higher fiber contents, particularly 1.5%, performance losses were observed due to reduced workability, increased void formation, and the resulting deterioration in matrix continuity. Damage images revealed that, with PP fiber use, a widespread crack pattern containing numerous hairline cracks replaced single and wide cracks. Overall, the findings indicate that using natural perlite aggregate at a 30% replacement level in combination with 1.0% PP fiber reinforcement provides an effective and practical solution for producing low-carbon concrete with balanced mechanical performance.

The development of environmentally compatible nanomaterials with biomedical potential has garnered increasing interest. In this study, cobalt oxide nanoparticles (Co3O4-NPs) were synthesized by an eco-friendly method using Platanus orientalis L. leaf extract as a reducing and stabilizing agent. Structural and physicochemical characterizations confirmed the successful formation of spinel-type Co3O4-NPs with controlled size and morphology. Synthesis at pH 12 resulted in smaller (22.70 nm) and more stable nanoparticles which showed increased anticandidal activity. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC: 3.91, 7.81, and 1.95 mg/mL) and the minimum fungicidal concentrations (MFC: 15.63, 62.50, and 7.81 mg/mL) indicated a strong antifungal effect against Candida albicans, Candida tropicalis , and Candida glabrata , respectively. In addition, Co3O4-NPs showed concentration-dependent cytotoxicity on MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells with the inhibition concentration 50 value (IC50: 0.07 mg/mL 24-h) indicating potential anticancer effect. These results highlight the dual antifungal and cytotoxic capabilities of biogenically synthesized Co3O4-NPs, making them strong candidates for future biomedical applications.

Özdemir, Agah Oktay
In this study, PET fabric surfaces were modified with TiO2 nanoparticles, synthesized through the one-step hydrolysis of TiCl4. The fabrics were characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-DRS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Water contact angles (WCA) of both pure PET and TiO2-coated PET fabrics were measured, revealing that hydrophobicity increased as the TiO2 concentration increased. The photocatalytic performance of the modified fabrics was assessed by studying the degradation of Crystal Violet (CV) dye under UVA irradiation. To further quantify photocatalytic activity, the Apparent Quantum Yield (AQY) values were calculated based on dye degradation and photon flux under UVA light (365 nm, 0.098 W/cm2). AQY values ranged from 0.24% to 0.99%, depending on TiO2 loading and initial dye concentration. Reactive species trapping experiments were conducted to propose a mechanism for the photodegradation of CV on TiO2-coated PET fabric. The degradation followed second-order kinetics. A mechanism for the photodegradation process under UVA light was also proposed. In conclusion, this study offers valuable insights into producing self-cleaning, hydrophobic, and photocatalytically active TiO2-coated PET fabrics, contributing to the development of functional textiles for various applications.

RDL Kalıcı Kaydıİncele - ArticleAçık Erişim2025Performance, Emissions and Enviroeconomic Assessment of Diesel–Waste Tyre Pyrolysis Oil–n-Butanol Blends in a Single-Cylinder Engine
Demirci, Oğuz Kürşat; Erol, Derviş; Gülcan, Halil Erdi
This study evaluates the performance, emissions and enviroeconomic implications of diesel–waste tyre pyrolysis oil (WTPO)–butanol blends in a single-cylinder, direct-injection diesel engine operated at 1500 rpm across 10–50 Nm. Five fuels were tested: neat diesel (D100), D90T10, D80T20, D80T10B10 and D60T20B20. Relative to D100, oxygenated blends incurred a modest fuel-consumption penalty (peak ≈ +8% BSFC), yet delivered pronounced reductions in incomplete-combustion products: carbon monoxide fell by about 50% at high load with D60T20B20. WTPO-only mixtures increased unburned hydrocarbons, whereas adding 10% butanol suppressed HC. Conversely, nitrogen oxides rose by roughly 15–45%, highest for D60T20B20, while tailpipe CO2 decreased slightly (≈4% at 50 Nm). A simple carbon-pricing lens (€70 t-1 CO₂) indicated a ~4% lower carbon-cost component for D60T20B20 than D100 at high load. Considering these trade-offs, D80T10B10 emerges as the most pragmatic configuration, balancing efficiency with air-quality benefits and moderating the NOx rise. The results support partial substitution of diesel by WTPO and butanol where NOx control (e.g., EGR or calibration) is feasible, coupling local pollutant mitigation with incremental decarbonisation and modest cost gains.

RDL Kalıcı Kaydıİncele - ArticleAçık Erişim2025The Impact of Agricultural Total Factor Productivity and Economic Growth on Environmental Quality: The Case of Agriculturally Successful Countries
Dinçer, Selin; Akin, Fatih
Agricultural productivity supports the increase in agricultural production by ensuring the efficiency of resources used in the agricultural sector, such as water, soil, labour, and capital. In addition, environmental problems such as land expansion and deforestation can be prevented by using efficient agricultural techniques. However, when the literature is analyzed, it is seen that there is no consensus on the impact of agricultural productivity on environmental quality. On the other hand, it is very important to examine the impact of economic growth on the environment. The economic activities of countries that are in line with their growth and development targets affect environmental quality. In this direction, in this study, in the period 1990-2022, in 12 countries (China, USA, Russia, France, Germany, Canada, Australia, India, Brazil, Indonesia, Argentina, and T & uuml;rkiye) that are successful in agriculture, The impact of agricultural Total Factor Productivity (T-TFP) and economic growth on environmental quality is analyzed by the Augmented Mean Group (AMG) method and Dumitrescu & Hurlin causality analysis. The carbon emission variable is used to represent environmental quality. The findings show that an increase in T-TFP increases environmental quality in China, the USA, Russia, France, Canada, Indonesia, and Australia; that is, the Borlaug hypothesis is valid in these countries. In India, Brazil, Argentina, and T & uuml;rkiye, the increase in T-TFP decreases the environmental quality; that is, Jevons' Paradox is valid in these countries. Moreover, in the study, environmental quality decreases as economic growth increases in all countries except Germany. Renewable energy consumption increases environmental quality in China, the USA, Brazil, Australia, and T & uuml;rkiye. Dumitrescu & Hurlin's causality analysis findings show that there is a bidirectional causality relationship between T-TFP, carbon emissions, and renewable energy consumption. The findings reveal that T-TFP, economic growth, and renewable energy consumption are important in environmental quality.

Aygun, Z.; Astam, A.; Aygun, M.
The use of natural resources and waste products represents an effective way of addressing a pressing concern for the future of the global population. It is therefore crucial to evaluate wastes and natural materials as raw materials in many industries. The present study sought to investigate the radiation protection features and experimental characteristics of tincal waste added with obsidians from Eastern Turkey (Nemrut, Pasinler, Sarıkamış and Ikizdere regions). Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, Scanning electron microscopy and Energy dispersive spectroscopy were used to have knowledge for morphological and structural properties of the samples. The X-ray diffraction analysis of the samples with higher obsidian content revealed an amorphous structure with a minor presence of crystalline phases. In contrast, the samples with a higher tincal waste content exhibited crystalline phases. Based on morphologic results, it can be said that obsidian samples exhibited relatively smooth and glassy surfaces, whereas tincal waste displayed a rough surface comprising randomly shaped small particles. In addition, radiation attenuating abilities of the tincal waste added with obsidians were determined by the calculation of tenth value layers, half value layers, mean free paths, mass attenuation coefficients, linear attenuation coefficients, fast neutron removal cross sections, effective atomic numbers and buildup factors using the newly produced Phy-X/PSD code. It is obtained that the samples show good radiation protection performances and the samples can be evaluated as better radiation shields for radiation applications especially in construction industry.

Ertugay, Neşe; Keleş Güner, Eda
This study investigates, for the first time, the potential of Thuja plicata (TP) cone-derived activated carbon for the removal of the azo dye Reactive Red 2 (RR2) from aqueous solutions. Activated carbon was produced via microwave irradiation to enhance the adsorption capacity of the raw material. The prepared activated carbon (TPAC), synthesised using a chemical activating agent, was characterised by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX), and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). SEM analysis demonstrated that TPAC exhibited increased surface porosity and an irregular morphology after adsorption at the optimal pH. EDX results confirmed that carbon and oxygen were the dominant elements, with elevated contents post-activation. BET analysis indicated a decrease in the specific surface area from 66.64 to 20.35 m2 g−1 after RR2 adsorption, likely due to pore blockage. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted to evaluate the influence of several parameters, including solution pH, adsorbent dosage, initial dye concentration, and temperature. The maximum removal efficiency (54%) was achieved at pH 3 with an adsorbent dosage of 0.01 g. The adsorption capacity increased with rising dye concentration, reaching a maximum of 309.56 mg g−1 at 60 mg L−1. Adsorption isotherms, kinetics, and thermodynamic properties were also evaluated. The Freundlich isotherm model exhibited the best fit to the equilibrium data, indicating multilayer adsorption on a heterogeneous surface. Kinetic data were best described by the pseudo-second-order model, suggesting that chemisorption was the rate-limiting step. Thermodynamic analysis confirmed that the adsorption of RR2 onto TPAC was a spontaneous and exothermic process.

Due to strict governmental regulations, manufacturers have increasingly focused on recovering end-of-life (EoL) products through disassembly lines, aiming to achieve economic benefits while addressing the environmental aspects of supply chain sustainability. Disassembly line balancing (DLB) has become a key challenge for enterprises seeking to perform environmentally conscious manufacturing as part of a closed-loop supply chain policy. Therefore, designing a sustainable closed-loop supply chain requires analyzing interrelated problems by focusing on strategic-, tactical-, and operational-level decisions simultaneously. This study introduces an integrated problem that addresses multi-manned DLB, lot sizing, and reverse supply chain (RSC) design problems. To mathematically represent the problem, a generic optimization model is developed to minimize overall costs, including station opening, inventory holding, shortage, transportation, and collection center/facility opening costs. This study addresses several research questions to explore the impact of distribution strategies (centralized and decentralized) on multi-manned DLB and lot size decisions within the context of reverse supply chain design.

Flexible pavements stand out as the most commonly used worldwide, compared to rigid and composite pavements, owing to their versatility and widespread application. The use of hot mix asphalt (HMA) in flexible pavements causes significant environmental concerns due to high CO2 emissions and energy consumption, whereas warm mix asphalt (WMA) technologies have gained popularity in recent decades, offering a more sustainable alternative by enabling asphalt production at lower temperatures. WMA technologies can be categorized into three main groups: foaming, organic additives, and chemical additives, with each offering distinct benefits for performance and environmental impact. One of the chemical additives used in WMA production is Cecabase RT BIO10. In this study, virgin bitumen with 50/70 penetration was modified by adding Cecabase RT BIO10 at four levels: 0%, 0.3%, 0.4%, and 0.5% by weight. The experimental design employed a Taguchi L16 orthogonal array to systematically evaluate the effects of various factors on modified bitumen performance. Binders were prepared at four temperatures (110 °C, 120 °C, 130 °C, and 140 °C), four mixing durations (15, 20, 25, and 30 min), and four mixing speeds (1000, 2000, 3000, and 4000 rpm), enabling an efficient analysis of each parameter’s impact. The prepared binders were subjected to a series of tests, including penetration, softening point, flash point, rotational thin film oven test (RTFOT), elastic recovery, Marshall stability, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), and FTIR analysis. These tests were conducted to investigate the effects of various parameters and levels on the binder properties. Additionally, stiffness and seismic modules were evaluated to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the binder’s performance. The experiment results revealed that the penetration, elastic recovery percentage, and Marshall stability increased with increasing additive content while the softening point and RTFOT mass loss decreased. At a high service temperature of 40 °C, the stiffness modulus of the modified bitumen decreased slightly. At a low service temperature of −10 °C, it decreased further. Additionally, the incorporation of Cecabase RT BIO10 led to an increase in the seismic modulus. Through optimization using the Taguchi method, the optimal levels were determined to be a 0.4% Cecabase RT BIO10 ratio, 140 °C mixing temperature, 30 min mixing time, and 1000 RPM mixing speed. The optimal responses for each test were identified and integrated into a unified optimal response, resulting in a comprehensive design guide with 95% confidence level estimates for all possible level combinations.

In line with the 2050 net zero emission target, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is recognized as one of the most effective decarbonization solutions for the aviation industry, which has been identified among the critical areas for mitigating climate change. However, although sustainability issues and decarbonization have attracted scholars' attention in various terms for the airline industry, we identified some significant theoretical and managerial gaps as follows: (i) the number of studies evaluating sustainable suppliers by airlines via multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) approaches are very few, (ii) the extant literature has no paper addressing airlines' SAF supplier selection process, and (iii) no widely established criteria set in the literature to evaluate the SAF suppliers for airlines. We propose a novel model for the decision-making process of airlines' sustainable SAF supplier selection, including 39 criteria from 5 aspects considering the triple bottom of sustainability. The proposed model involves the combination of the logarithmic percentage change-driven objective weighting (LOPCOW) and measurement alternatives and ranking according to the compromise solution (MARCOS) approaches' extended forms based on the interval-valued fuzzy neutrosophic numbers (IVFNN). A comprehensive sensitivity and comparison control is further exploited to display the developed framework's robustness and practicality. Our results suggest that airlines prioritize the green initiatives of SAF suppliers over the economic aspect in the process of sustainable SAF supplier selection. We provide some managerial and policy insights for practitioners and policy-makers in the airline industry and some directions for further research.
