Investigation of Tomato, Quince and Grapefruit Waste; Compositions and Functional Properties

    Gençcelep, Hüseyin; Akşit, Zeynep

The food industry constantly growing with increasing population and food diversity. In addition to production, the formation of food waste is also increasing. These wastes cause environmental pollution, economical problems and the loss of valuable chemical com-ponents. Tomato is used for tomato paste, sauce and other food production; especially the skin and seed part of tomato is waste. Grapefruit and quince have a significant amount of waste, especially in the beverage industry. The reuse of these wastes can reduce the exposu-re of solid waste, the environmental problem and the recovery of the bioactive components. In this study, some physicochemical, functional and thermal properties of quince, grapef-ruit and tomato waste were determined and their reuse potential was revealed. All three samples showed high hydration properties. According to the dietary fiber analysis, TDF of quince, grapefruit and tomato were 87.90%, 90.34%, and 63.76% respectively. DTG and TGA chromatograms were obtained for the thermal decomposition of the samples. Tomato waste signaled lycopene and its derivatives as distinct from the other samples in the FT-IR spectrum. Based on the results of the study; the use of these wastes in many food products as hydrocolloid, filler, fat replacer is possible, also cost reduction may be possible with the recovery of these samples.

The Validity of the Enviromental Kuznets Curve Hypothesis in the Transportation Sector: the Case of Selected OECD Countries

    Manga, Muge

Economic activities in the transport sector are one of the main reasons for the increase in carbon emissions. In recent years, it can be clearly stated that there has been a noticeable increase in service demand in the transportation sector depending on globalization and integration activities that have reached significant levels among the countries. In this respect, this paper investigates the relationship between the total output level of the transportation sector and the carbon emission sourced from the same sector for selected OECD countries spanning the period 1995-2016 within the framework of the Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis. The Augmented Mean Group (AMG) estimator findings for the panel group show that there exists an inverted-U shaped relationship between the total output level in the transport sector and environmental pollution in selected OECD countries. The Country-specific results vary by country to another. Besides, the analysis reveals that the negative impact of total output on environmental pollution in these countries would be approximatively 36.033 billion dollars. It is seen that USA, Japan, France and Germany have reached this threshold income level. According to the results of Dumitrescu-Hurlin (2012) causality test, it is estimated that there is a bidirectional causality relationship between the carbon emission in the transportation sector and the total amount of output.

Caglar, Bulent; Guner, Eda Keles; Ersoy, Selin; Caglar, Sema; Özdemir, Agah Oktay; Özdokur, Kemal Volkan; Doğan, Bilge; İçer, Fatih; Çırak, Çağrı

In this study, we prepared bentonite-Bi2S3 nanocomposite via decoration of Bi2S3 nanorods on bentonite for the first time to enhance the photocatalytic performance of Bi2S3 nanorods under visible light irradiation. XRD, TEM, SEM-EDX, XPS, UV-DRS, PL, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, chronoamperometry, zeta potential, and BET techniques were used to compare analysis of structural, morphological, optical, electrochemical and textural properties of raw bentonite, bare Bi2S3 nanorods and bentonite-Bi2S3 nanocomposite. The photocatalytic performances of bentonite-Bi2S3 nanocomposite and bare samples were also investigated and comparatively evaluated by photodegradations of crystal violet and rhodamine B dyes under visible light irradiation. The photocatalytic degradation efficiencies of fabricated bentonite-Bi2S3 nanocomposite for crystal violet and rhodamine B were determined as 100% and 85% after the periods of 30 min and 90 min, respectively, which were more superior compared with those of bare Bi2S3 nanorods. The enhanced photodegradation activity of bentonite-Bi2S3 nanocomposite was assigned to the good visible light absorption ability, enlarged surface area, increased adsorption capability and decreased aggregation of Bi2S3 nanorods with the inclusion of bentonite platform as well as suppressed hole-electron recombination process due to electrostatic interaction between negatively charged bentonite surface and positively charged holes. The reactive species trapping revealed that hydroxyl radicals played a major role on the photodegradation and a plausible mechanism for photodegradation of dye molecules on bentonite-Bi2S3 nanocomposite was suggested. The photodegradation of dyes was found to follow the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The prepared photocatalyst exhibited good reusability and stability after 4 cycles.

How to prevent food waste behaviour? A deep empirical research

    Aka, Salih; Buyukdag, Naci

Food waste has recently emerged as a threat that has negative economic, social, and environmental consequences. Therefore, this study aims to reveal the effect of the intention to avoid food waste (IAFW) on food waste behavior (FWB) and the mediating role of the variables of awareness, knowledge, and habits in terms of these relations. The results of the structural equation model analysis show that the intention to avoid food waste and habits have an essential role in preventing waste behaviour. It is seen that if awareness can be supported by IAFW, then FWB can be reduced. Also, knowledge alone cannot contribute to the FWB, however, knowledge has a significant and negative effect on FWB, when habits and intention were mediators. In another finding that distinguishes the study, it has been revealed that married and women categories should be the most prestigious groups among the demographic variables from the point of the FWB. Theoretical and managerial implications were discussed, and future suggestions were presented.

An inventory and production model with fuzzy parameters for the food sector

    Aka, Salih; Akyüz, Gökhan

In the food sector, the importance of inventory and production decisions is increasing due to the perishable nature of food. As the results of these decisions, environmental, economic, and social problems arise such as shortages, food waste and production costs. The food production systems are affected by uncertainties caused by demand, delays, and inefficiencies. Thus, some efficient decision-making tools are required to deal with uncertain parameters in food inventory and production problems. In this study, storage and production activities of a catering company that produces daily meals are examined, and it is aimed to minimize the food waste and costs arising from these activities. We propose a linear programming (LP) model considering fuzzy parameters. In this way, the effects of the change in parameters on the total cost, workforce size, inventory and production decisions and food waste minimization are investigated. The presented model makes the decision to keep the raw material in inventory or to use it in production, considering the shelf life and age. Through the fuzzy parameter model, a scenario analysis including 112 different solutions were carried out. In this way, the total cost has been reduced 1.7% and a plan was proposed where production could be carried out with less labor. Similarly, 3% change in demand has been reflected in the fuzzy model, thereby 39% improvement was achieved in the amount of wasted food. The results show that fuzzy parameters have a critical impact on production, stock decisions and total cost at different levels. According to results, considering the uncertainty is an important factor to achieve the economic and environmental sustainability of the food sector.

Technological innovation, financialization, and ecological footprint: evidence from BEM economies

    Destek, Mehmet Akif; Manga, Muge

Despite the growing interest in researches on the impact of technological development on carbon emissions, the effect of technological innovation on the other indicators of environmental degradation is of little interest. In order to close this gap, the aim of this study is to determine the effects of technological innovation on both carbon emission and ecological footprint for big emerging markets (BEM) countries. In doing so, the environmental impacts of the financialization process are also explored, in line with the fact that these countries face constraints in financing technological developments. In this context, the effects of technological development, financialization, renewable energy consumption, and non-renewable energy consumption on environmental degradation are examined through the second-generation panel data methods for the period 1995–2016. The findings indicate that technological innovation is effective in reducing carbon emissions, but does not have a significant impact on the ecological footprint, namely a 1% increase in technological innovations reduces carbon emission by 0.082–0.088%. Moreover, it is found that financialization harms environmental quality for both indicators of the environment because a 1% increase in financialization increases carbon emissions by 0.203–0.222% and increases ecological footprint by 0.069–0.071%.

Investigation of the Usability of Waste Kevlars in Concrete Road Pavements

Bayata, Halim Ferit; Tunçel, Mustafa Uraz; Bayrak, Osman Ünsal; Bas, Fatih Irfan

At the present time, fiber optic cables are generally used in the communication sector. In our country, there are 324 thousand km of fiber cables including only 256 thousand km in Turk Telekom operators and 68 thousand km in other operators. These cables, which have a service life of 20 years, need to be renewed over time and the cables that are out of use are scrapped. An average of 15,000 km of cable is scrapped annually. Approximately 5 Kg of kevlars become waste in 1 km length cable. Since waste kevlars do not have a separate usage area, they cannot be recycled to the economy. In this study, the usability of the concrete produced with kevlar on the road superstructure was investigated. For this purpose, water / binder ratio (0.40, 0.45, 0.50), silica fume (%0, 5, 10 instead of cement), kevlar (0 gr / m3, 500 gr / m3, 1000 gr / m3) and polypropylene fiber (0 gr / m3, 500 gr / m3, 1000 gr / m3) are determined as mixture variables. According to the full factorial experiment design, 3 x 34 = 243 samples must be poured for each of the compressive strength, rupture modulus and elasticity modulus tests. In the case of a grand total, 729 samples are required if a full factorial experiment design is applied. For this reason, Taguchi method was used for the experimental design and optimum mixture variables that gave 28 days of flexural and compressive strength were determined by the modulus of elasticity. Considering the factor and number of the levels, the $L_9$ orthogonal array was chosen as the experimental design and the study to be performed with a total of 3x9x3 = 81 samples and 729 samples was represented. From the results of the experiment, it has been observed that Kevlar material has positive effects on the compressive, flexural and elasticity modulus values added up to 500 g / m3 in the concrete. Since polypropylene fiber and kevlar were tested together in the experiments, it is predicted that this rate will increase only in the use of kevlar. From the results, it was observed that Kevlar which is a waste material can be brought to the economy by adding to the concrete.

Partial purification and characterization of a recombinant β-mannanase from Aspergillus fumigatus expressed in Aspergillus sojae grown on carob extract

Karahalil, Ercan; Germec, Mustafa; Karaoglan, Mert; Yatmaz, Ercan; Coban, Hasan Bugra; Inan, Mehmet; Turhan, Irfan

Mannanases are of great importance as they are able to hydrolyze polysaccharides for industrial applications and can be easily produced by fermentation. Purification of a β-mannanase produced from carob extract in a bioreactor is of great importance in order to obtain information about its structural and functional features and to foresee its implementations. Therefore, the aims of this study were to purify a β-mannanase from Aspergillus fumigatus expressed in Aspergillus sojae grown on carob extract by implementation of various flocculant agents in the fermentation medium, followed by the determination of its physico-chemical, kinetic, and thermodynamic characteristics. Flocculants increase the visible size of the dispersed particles by agglomeration, simplifying the separation of solids and liquids, and thereby reducing process costs. Optimum flocculation conditions for chitosan- and PAC-PAM-implemented processes were determined as 40 mg/L of chitosan, 30 min of implementation time, no agitation and 3 g/L PAC-PAM, 30 min implementation time, and no agitation. Under these conditions, more than a 2-fold increase in the enzyme activity was achieved in both flocculation processes. Further investigations determined molecular weight, optimum pH, and temperature values of the produced β-mannanase to be 56–60 kDa, pH 6, and 60 °C, respectively. Additionally, Km and Vm determination of the enzyme for various substrates concluded that the β-mannanase showed the highest substrate specificity against locust bean gum among the substrates evaluated. Furthermore, experimental results for substrate specificity were further modeled and successfully represented by the Weibull model. In conclusion, this study provides valuable and important information about β-mannanase production and purification for industrial-scale applications.

Renewable energy cooperatıves for sustaınable tourısm development (evaluatıon of sample ınvestment analysıs and fınancıal contrıbıtıon to kemaliye)

    Akkaya, Fatma Aldirmaz

The most important reason of climate change due to global warming, which has become a universal problem today, pollution of ground water and air, ecosystem deterioration, rapid erosion of flora and fauna from the natural process is the emission of gren house gases into the atmosphere which is above the natural boundaries that the atmosphere can carry. The majority of the gren house gas emissions is consist of carbondioxide (CO2) gas which occurs by use of nonrenewable energy sources. The natural environment, which is the most important source of human life and of course the tourism sector, is under the great threat of carbondioxide emission with the contribution which is above the known of the sector. In order to eliminate this problem, it has become necessary to act together globally and so the states have started to be obliged by contracts such as Kyoto Protocol, Paris Climate Agreement, at the same time, individual people have started the gren consumer movement. In paralel with this, in the tourism sector, the demand for sustainable gren tourism started to be effective along with the search for alternative tourism. While the use of renewable energy sources in urban and rural areas plays an important role in reducing the emission of carbondioxide into the atmosphere, it is also becoming a marketing tool in tourism destinations. For this reason, it ensures the environmental sustainability of tourism by preventing the destruction of the natural environmentandal so contributes to the increase of the rate of gain in tourism destinations outside of its own return, thus ensuring the economic sustainability of tourism. However, the high amount of investment which is required for the production of renewable energy resources in sustainable tourism destinations leads to a slow progress in the use of renewable energy resources. Renewable energy cooperatives provide a great convenience in the solution of the financing problem of investments and in the distribution of risk. It also emerges as a solution to the local development problem in many ways, such as gaining small savings into the economy, the local people having a say in the energy production and consumption, the economic gain of the local population, the provision of social cohesion and avoiding foreign dependency in energy. The aim of the study is to evaluate the economic, social and environmental contribution to the local people and destination if the renewable energy investments in the sustainable tourism destinations are financed through energy cooperatives. In this context, an exemplary solar power plant investment in Kemaliye, which is a tourism destination, was analyzed and considering that the financing of this investment will be covered by the renewable energy cooperative, the financial contribution of the investment to each member is evaluated.

Mixed refrigerant as working fluid in Organic Rankine Cycle for hydrogen production driven by geothermal energy

    Ganjehsarabi, Hadi

The possibility of utilizing low temperature heat source systems for producing electricity has been significant due to increasing energy demand. In this study, the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) integrated with proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer is analyzed thermodynamically and economically. A mixture of butane, pentane and iso-pentane is selected as working fluid. The results show that utilizing the mixed refrigerant enhances the performance of the system and results in a higher hydrogen production rate because of a glide match of temperature profiles in the heat exchangers. Economic analysis results which are helpful in designing entire the system show that the highest cost component is electrolyzer, followed by the turbine and condenser.

Preparation and characterization of a novel activated carbon component via chemical activation of tea woody stem

Tabak, Ahmet; Sevimli, Kadir; Kaya, Mehmet; Çağlar, Bülent

The novel activated carbon materials were synthesized by the carbonization and chemical activation of agricultural bio-waste from tea woody stems (TWS), and these materials were characterized by using FTIR, SEM, TG/DTA and surface analysis (BET surface area; pore distribution; pore size, area and volume) techniques. The higher carbonization times and amount of chemical reagent generally produce the higher surface area at 400 and 500 °C. The experimental data demonstrated that the highest BET surface area was 789 m2 g−1 at 500 °C, 75 μm particle size, TWS/KOH ratio of 1:2 and carbonization time of 3 h. The activated carbon IR spectrum showed the increases in intense of aromatic C–H out-of-plane bending and C=C vibrations and the disappearance of olefinic C=C functional groups. Thermal analysis curves of TWS are ascribed to decomposition of organic derivate corresponding to lignin, cellulose and hemicelluloses components up to 700 °C from 200 °C. The SEM images and textural analysis data signified that the pore development of carbon skeleton structure during carbonization and activation process formed and type of micropores in these pore structures was dominant.
