The degradation of landfill leachate in the presence of different catalysts by sonolytic and sonocatalytic processes

Kocakaplan, Nihal; Ertugay, Neşe; Malkoç, Emine

In the study, the degradation of landfill leachate by single ultrasound (sonolytic) and sonolytic combined with Fe2+ and TiO2 catalysts was carried out in laboratory conditions. The effect of pH and ultrasonic wave amplitude was also investigated in terms of color removal, total organic carbon (TOC) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) from leachate by the sonolytic degradation process. In this process, the color removal efficiency was recorded as 81.81% at 620 nm, pH = 2.0 and 70% wave amplitude. The sonocatalytic degradation of landfill leachate accompanied by different catalysts was studied by using the 70% wave amplitude at pH = 2.0 and room temperature for 20 min. The sonocatalytic degradation of leachate by using Fe2+ and TiO2 was found to be significantly higher than sonolytic degradation (p < 0.05). As the Fe2+ concentration increased from 1.0 to 3.0 mg/L, the COD and color removal of leachate significantly decreased (p < 0.05) from 50 to 35.7% and from 95.5 to 90.9%, respectively. The experimental data obtained from sonocatalytic degradation was analyzed using the Behnajady–Modirshahla–Ghanbery (BMG) kinetic models and found to be compatible. The results showed that the combination of catalyst and sonolysis was a highly effective way to remove color, COD and TOC from landfill leachate.

Processing and Wear Behaviour of 3D Printed PLA Reinforced with Biogenic Carbon

Ertane, Ertan G.; Dorner-Reisel, Annett; Baran, Ozlem; Welzel, Thomas; Matner, Viola; Svoboda, Stefan

For the first time, biocarbon reinforced polylactide (PLA) filaments were available for the 3D printing. Biocarbon is the carbon obtained from trees, plants, and soils to naturally absorb and store carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. One of the most important features is renewability. Because of this, it has been decided to reinforce PLA with biocarbon to obtain 100% recyclable material. Although PLA has been used in 3D printing for a long time, more applications like housings or structural interior of automobiles or other vehicles can be realised, if the mechanical and tribological properties are improved. Because the new PLA/biocarbon reinforced composites are degradable, they can be used as soil improvement after end of life as a structural material. The filaments were produced by compounding the biocarbon with polylactide granulate. Biocarbon was produced by pyrolysis of wheat stems at 800°C. The biomass were collected from different regions in Germany, Europe. As shown by Raman spectroscopy, the in-plane crystallite size of pyrolysed wheat stems from different regions is almost similar and amounts to 2.35 ±0.02 nm. Biocarbon particles were successfully integrated into the polylactide. Filaments of 1.75 mm diameter were produced for 3D (3-dimensional) printing. Filaments with 5 vol.-%, 15 vol.-%, and 30 vol.-% biocarbon were extruded. The fused deposition modelling (FDM) printing process was slightly hindered at higher biocarbon loading. Based on optical and scanning electron microscopy, a very homogeneous particle distribution can be observed. Single carbon particles stick out of the filament surface, which may be a reason for enhanced nozzle wear during 3D printing. Friction is more stable for 30 vol.-% reinforced PLA in comparison to unreinforced PLA and composites with lower particle fraction. This effect could be caused by some topographical effects due to void generation at the surface of PLA with 30 vol.-% biocarbon. In general, the tribological resistance increases with higher volume fraction of biocarbon.

The Effect of ZVI and H2O2 Concentrations on Chemical Oxygen Demand and Color Removal With Fenton-Like Process From Leachate

Ertugay, Nese; Kocakaplan, Nihal; Malkoç, Emine

Leachate are difficult to treat due to their complex structures and having high pollutants concentrations. In this study; color and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal were studied from the leachate by Fenton-like oxidation. The effect of zero -valent iron (ZVI) and H2O2 concentrations on color and COD removal was investigated. The color removal was conducted at three different wavelengths of 436, 525 and 620 nm, respectively. The highest COD (74.4%) and color removal (71% at 436 nm, 80.3% at 525 nm and 87.9% at 620 nm) were determined at concentration of 0.05 g/L ZVI. Increasing of H2O2 concentration up to 200 mg/L also increased color and COD removal. Optimum values were 0.05 g/L and 150 mg/L for ZVI and H2O2 at a reaction time of 20 minutes and pH=2.0 and total organic carbon (TOC) removal was also determined at about 50%.

Evaluation of Waste Loquat Kernels as Substrate for Lipid Production by Rhodotorula glutinis SO28

Ortucu, Serkan; Yazici, Aysenur; Taskin, Mesut; Cebi, Kadir

This study was performed to produce lipids from the isolated oleaginous yeast Rhodotorula glutinis SO28 using loquat kernel extract (LKE) as substrate. LKE was prepared using acid hydrolysis and alkaline neutralization steps. Lipid production was performed in shaking flaks culture. Even if LKE was used as a sole source of nutritional substances, it could support cell growth and lipid synthesis in the yeast. Additional carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus sources were found to significantly alter the lipid accumulation potential of the yeast. Optimal concentrations of additional carbon (glucose) and nitrogen (ammonium sulphate) sources for lipid accumulation were determined as 15 and 0.5 g/L, respectively. On the other hand, all the concentrations of additional phosphorus source were found to significantly reduce the lipid accumulation. Optimal incubation time was determined as 132 h. Under the optimized culture conditions, the lipid concentration and lipid content of the yeast were determined as 7.82 g/L and 62 %, respectively. Fatty acid methyl ester analysis exhibited that this yeast strain could produce high proportions of C16:0 and C18 fatty acids, which are ideal for biodiesel production. This is the first report on the use of waste loquat kernels as substrate for microbial lipid production.

A study on mechanical properties of polymer concrete containing electronic plastic waste

    Bulut, H. Alperen; Şahin, Remzi

It is aimed to research the effects of electronic plastic waste (e-plastic) on the mechanical properties of polymer concrete. E-plastic was used as a part of the filling materials (quartz sand and gravel) to obtain polymer concrete in this study. Unsaturated polyester resin material has been chosen as the polymer material and used as binder in polymer concrete production. Resin/filling material ratio has been determined as 10–90%, 15–85% and 20–80%, e-plastic/filling material ratio has been decided to be 0%, 5%, 15% and 25%. 28-Day of axial compressive, flexural and splitting tensile strength values of the test samples were evaluated. The increase in the ratio of resin, increases the compressive strength while it does not cause a dramatic increase or decrease in the flexural and splitting tensile strength. Compressive, flexural and splitting tensile strength values decrease as the ratio of e-plastic increases. On the other hand, electronic plastic waste increases the polymer concrete's ductility. Experimental study shows that ideal resin ratio and ideal e-plastic ratio values are 15% and 5%, respectively.

Analysis and optimisation of a cascade active magnetic regenerative refrigeration system

Ganjehsarabi, Hadi; Dincer, Ibrahim; Gungor, Ali

In this paper, comprehensive thermodynamic analysis and optimisation of a cascade active magnetic regenerative refrigeration system are performed. A parametric study is conducted to investigate the effects of various design parameters on the cycle performance through energy and exergy efficiencies. A multi-objective optimisation method based on a fast and elitist non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm is applied to determine the best design parameters for the system. Two objective functions utilised in the optimisation study are the total cost rate of the system and the system exergy efficiency. The total cost rate of the system is minimised while the cycle exergy efficiency is maximised using an evolutionary algorithm. To provide insight, the Pareto frontier is shown for a multi-objective optimisation. The results show that exergy efficiency could be increased by 14.53% using exergy-based optimisation and the cost could be reduced by 12% using the cost-based optimisation.

Yağli, Hüseyin; Koç, Yildiz; Koç, Ali; Görgülü, Adnan; Tandiroğlu, Ahmet

In this paper, a subcritical and supercritical organic Rankine cycle (ORC) are designed to recover exhaust gas waste heat of biogas fuelled combined heat and power (CHP) engine. The CHP engine is located in Belgium and uses biogas as fuel which is produced from the digestion of domestic wastes by anaerobic digestion. R245fa is selected as working fluid. First, the system parameters as net power, mass flow rate, pumps total power consumption, total evaporator exergy inlet, thermal efficiency and exergy efficiency are improved by changing turbine inlet temperature and pressure. After which second low analysis of the overall system and system components are determined for the best performed subcritical and supercritical cycles. Compared with subcritical ORC, the supercritical ORC has shown better performance. The best performed cycle net power, thermal efficiency and exergy efficiency are evaluated as 79.23 KW, 15.51% and 27.20% for subcritical ORC and 81.52 kW, 15.93% and 27.76% for supercritical ORC, respectively.

Jagan, J.; Dalkilç, Yildirim; Samui, Pijush

The prediction of wastes generated in the hospital will help their management for several activities like storage, transport and disposing. This chapter adopts Support Vector Machine (SVM), Least Square Support Vector Machine (LSSVM) and Genetic Programming (GP) in order to estimate the rate of medical waste generation. In the event of predicting the rate, type of hospital, capacity and bed occupancy has been used as inputs of SVM, LSSVM and GP. SVM is based on statistical learning theory, which provides an elegant tool for nonlinear system modeling. LSSVM is the re-formulation to the general SVM. GP, a best part of evolutionary algorithm and also the specification of Genetic Algorithm (GA). These SVM, LSSVM and GP have been used as the regression techniques. The results show the performance of the developed SVM, LSSVM and GP models were elegant and outstanding.

Basic Violet 10 (BV10) removal from aqueous solutions using sawdust of Swietenia mahagoni (Mahogany trees): adsorbent characterization, adsorption isotherm, kinetics, and thermodynamic studies

    Ertugay, Nese

In this work, the adsorption potential of sawdust of Swietenia mahagoni to remove Basic Violet 10 (BV10) from aqueous solutions was investigated by batch adsorption system. The adsorbent was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer, scanning electron microscope, particle size distribution, and Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller methods. The effect of various experimental parameters such as pH, initial dye concentration, adsorbent concentration, and temperature on adsorption of BV10 was investigated. The optimum pH for BV10 adsorption was found to be 4.2. Equilibrium adsorption data were analyzed by the Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Scatchard isotherm models. The results show that the best fit was achieved with the Langmuir isotherm with a maximum adsorption capacity of 222.76 mg g−1 at 50°C. Pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, intraparticle diffusion, and Elovich models were used to analyze the kinetic data obtained at different BV10 concentrations. The adsorption kinetic data were well described by the pseudo-second-order model. The calculated thermodynamic parameters, namely ∆G°, ∆H°, and ∆S°, showed that adsorption of BV10 was spontaneous and endothermic under examined conditions.

Removal of Organic Dyes from Industrial Effluents: An Overview of Physical and Biotechnological Applications

Ejder-Korucu, Mehtap; Gürses, Ahmet; Dogar, Çetin; Sharma, Sanjay K.; Açikyildiz, Metin; Sharma, SK

The textile industry produces a large amount of dye effluents, which are highly toxic as they contain a large number of metal complex dyes. The use of synthetic chemical dyes in various industrial processes, including paper and pulp manufacturing, plastics, dyeing of cloth, leather treatment and printing has increased considerably over the last few years, resulting in the release of dye-containing industrial effluents into the soil and aquatic ecosystems. The textile industry generates highly polluted wastewater and its treatment is a very serious problem due to high total dissolved solids (TDS), the presence of toxic heavy metals and the non-biodegradable nature of the dyestuffs present in the effluents. There are many processes available for the removal of dyes by conventional treatment technologies including biological and chemical oxidation, coagulation and adsorption, but they cannot be effectively used individually. Many approaches, including physical, chemical and/or biological processes have been used in the treatment of industrial wastewater containing dye, but such methods are often very costly and not environmentally safe. Furthermore, the large amount of sludge generated and the low efficiency of treatment with respect to some dyes have limited their use.

Effects of green banana flour on the physical, chemical and sensory properties of ice cream

    Yangilar, Filiz

In the present study, possible effects of the addition of banana flour at different mass fractions (1 and 2 %) are investigated on physical (overrun, viscosity), chemical (dry matter, fat and ash content, acidity, pH, water and oil holding capacity and colour), mineral content (Ca, K, Na, P, S, Mg, Fe, Mn, Zn and Ni) and sensory properties of ice cream. Fibre-rich banana pieces were found to contain 66.8 g per 100 g of total dietary fibre, 58.6 g per 100 g of which were insoluble dietary fibre, while 8.2 g per 100 g were soluble dietary fibre. It can be concluded from these results that banana is a valuable dietary fibre source which can be used in food production. Flour obtained from green banana pulp and peel was found to have significant (p<0.05) effect on the chemical composition of ice creams. Sulphur content increased while calcium content decreased in ice cream depending on banana flour content. Sensory results indicated that ice cream sample containing 2 % of green banana pulp flour received the highest score from panellists.

Temperature-dependent thermal conductivity of high strength lightweight raw perlite aggregate concrete

    Tandiroglu, Ahmet

Twenty-four types of high strength lightweight concrete have been designed with raw perlite aggregate (PA) from the Erzincan Mollaköy region as new low-temperature insulation material. The effects of the water/cement ratio, the amount of raw PA, and the temperature on high strength lightweight raw perlite aggregate concrete (HSLWPAC) have been investigated. Three empirical equations were derived to correlate the thermal conductivity of HSLWPAC as a function of PA percentage and temperature depending on the water/cement ratio. Experimentally observed thermal conductivities of concrete samples were predicted 92 % of the time for each set of concrete matrices within 97 % accuracy and over the range from 1.457 W • m -1 • K -1 to 1.777 W • m -1 • K -1. The experimental investigation revealed that the usage of raw PA from the Erzincan Mollaköy region in concrete production reduces the concrete unit mass, increases the concrete strength, and furthermore, the thermal conductivity of the concrete has been improved. The proposed empirical correlations of thermal conductivity were considered to be applicable within the range of temperatures 203.15 K ≤ T ≤ 303.15 K in the form of λ = a(PAP b ) + c(T d ).

Thermodynamics and kinetic studies of biosorption of a basic dye from aqueous solution using green algae Ulothrix sp.

Doǧar, Çetin; Gürses, Ahmet; Açikyildiz, Metin; Özkan, Esra

This study addresses removal of a basic dye, methylene blue, from aqueous solutions by using dried Ulothrix sp. biomass as biosorbent. The effects of the initial dye concentration, contact time, temperature, solution equilibrium pH, biosorbent dosage, and mixing rate on biosorption of the dye have been investigated. It was found that 30 min is sufficient in order to reach adsorption equilibrium. The amount of methylene blue adsorbed onto Ulothrix sp. increased with increasing equilibrium pH and mixing rate, in contrary, it decreased with increasing temperature and sorbent dosage. The process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The isosteric enthalpy and entropy values were calculated as -11.8 kJ/mol and 37.5 J/(mol K), respectively. In addition, the results suggest that the physical interactions between sorbent particles and sorbate ions play an important role for the adsorption of methylene blue onto the biosorbent.

The removal of lignin and phenol from paper mill effluents by electrocoagulation

    Uǧurlu, M.; Gürses, A.; Doǧar, Ç.; Yalçin, M.

This study aims to investigate the treatment of paper mill effluents using electrocoagulation. Removal of lignin, phenol, chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biological oxygen demand (BOD) from paper mill effluents was investigated at various current intensities by using different electrodes (Al and Fe) and at various electrolysis times (1.0, 2.5, 5.0 and 7.5 min). It was observed that the experiments carried out at 12 V, an electrolysis time of 2 min and a current intensity of 77.13 mA were sufficient for the removal of these pollutants with each electrode. The removal capacities of the process using an Al electrode were 80% of lignin, 98% of phenol, 70% of BOD, and 75% of COD after 7.5 min. Using an Fe electrode the removal capacities were 92%, 93%, 80% and 55%, respectively. In addition, it was found that removal of lignin, phenol, BOD and COD increased with increasing current intensity. In the experiments carried out at different current intensities, higher removal can be explained through a decrease in intra-resistance of solution and consequently an increase at the transfer speed of organic species to electrodes. It was also found that Al electrode performs higher efficiency than Fe electrode except for COD removal. However, the time required for removal of BOD was more than that of COD. The results suggest that electrocoagulation could be considered as an effective alternative to paper mill effluents treatment.

Adsorption studies on the treatment of textile dyeing effluent by activated carbon prepared from olive stone by ZnCl2 activation

Uǧurlu, Mehmet; Gürses, Ahmet; Doǧar, Çetin

This study aimed to investigate the removal of a reactive dye from aqueous solution by adsorption. Activated carbon prepared from olive stone, an agricultural solid by-product, was used as adsorbent. Different amounts of activating agent (ZnCl2) and adsorbent particle size were studied to optimise adsorbent surface area. The adsorption experiments were conducted at different process parameters such as adsorbent dose, temperature, equilibrium time and pH. The experimental results showed that at equilibrium time 120 min, optimum pH ranged between 3 and 4, and adsorbent dosage was 2.0 g 200 ml-1. While the kinetic data support pseudo-second order, a pseudo-first order model shows very poor fit. Adsorption isotherms were obtained at three different temperatures (288, 298 and 308 K). The fitness of adsorption data to the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms was investigated. In addition, the thermodynamic parameters such as isosteric enthalpy of adsorption (ΔHads)y, isosteric entropy of adsorption (ΔSads)y and free energy of adsorption ΔG0 ads were calculated. BET surface area measurements were made to reveal the adsorptive characteristics of the produced active carbon. The surface area of the activated carbon produced with 20% w/w ZnCl2 solution was 790.25 m2 g-1.

Production of granular activated carbon from waste Rosa canina sp. seeds and its adsorption characteristics for dye

    Gürses, A.; Doǧar, Ç.; Karaca, S.; Açikyildiz, M.; Bayrak, R.

An activated carbon was developed from Rosa canina sp. seeds, characterized and used for the removal of methylene blue (basic dye) from aqueous solutions. Adsorption studies were carried out at 20 °C and various initial dye concentrations (20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 mg/L) for different times (15, 30, 60, and 120 min). The adsorption isotherm was obtained from data. The results indicate that the adsorption isotherm of methylene blue is typically S-shaped. The shape of isotherm is believed to reflect three distinct modes of adsorption. In region 1, the adsorption of methylene blue is carried out mainly by ion exchange. In region 2 by polarizations of π-electrons established at cyclic parts of the previously adsorbed methylene blue molecules is occurred. However, it is not observed any change at the sign of the surface charge although zeta potential value is decreased with increase of amount adsorbed. In region 3, the slope of the isotherm is reduced, because adsorption now must overcome electrostatic repulsion between oncoming ions and the similarly charged solid. Adsorption in this fashion is usually complete when the surface is covered with a monolayer of methylene blue. To reveal the adsorptive characteristics of the produced active carbon, porosity and BET surface area measurements were made. Structural analysis was performed using SEM-EDS. The produced active carbon has the specific surface area of 799.2 m2 g-1 and the iodine number of 495 mg/g.

Effect of temperature for the adsorption of methylene blue onto activated carbon produced from waste dogrose seeds

Gürses, Ahmet; Doǧar, Çetin; Açikyildiz, Metin; Özkan, Esra; Bayrak, Ramis

Activated carbon, produced from dogrose (Rosa section Caninae) seeds, was used for the removal of methylene blue (basic dye). Adsorption studies were carried out at 20°C and 40°C at various initial dye concentrations (20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 mg/L) and at different lengths of time (15, 30, 60, and 120 min). Adsorption isotherms of the basic dye on the prepared adsorbent were determined and correlated with common isotherm equations. Fitting of the isotherm data to the BET adsorption isotherm model was better in high concentration ranges than in the other models. Thermodynamic parameters such as change in isosteric adsorption enthalpy (ΔH)y and isosteric adsorption entropy (ΔS)y were also determined to 40.8 kJ and 0.141 kJ, respectively. It was concluded that the adsorption of methylene blue increases with increasing temperature. BET model fitting indicates that the hydrophobic interactions between the dye and the produced active carbon at the first layer and the dipole-dipole interactions between methylene blue molecules and the adsorbed molecules at the secondary layer predominate. To investigate the adsorptive characteristics of the produced active carbon, porosity and BET surface area measurements were made.
