Turan, Ahmet Ihsan; Celik, Alper

Artificial Light at Night (ALAN) prediction can inform the development of strategies to minimise future light pollution and mitigate its adverse health, ecological, and environmental impacts. Population growth and GDP expansion significantly influence ALAN dynamics. This study quantifies changes in light pollution across Türkiye for 2012, 2017, and 2022, and predicts and maps potential changes in ALAN for 2027 and 2037 using the MOLUSCE plugin (MLP-ANN) in QGIS version 2.18, incorporating population and GDP as driving variables. The predicted and observed ALAN maps for 2022 show a satisfactory level of agreement, with an overall kappa coefficient of 0.63 and a general accuracy of 73.16%. The predicted and observed ALAN maps for 2022 exhibit an overall kappa coefficient of 0.63 and a general accuracy of 73.16%. Based on this validation, potential changes in ALAN according to Bortle classes were projected for 2027 and 2037. From 2022 onwards, ALAN intensity in the light suburban zone (20.1–19.1 mag/arcsec²) is projected to increase by 34,792.87 km², while the suburban–urban transition zone (19.1–18 mag/arcsec²) is expected to expand by 2,979.80 km² by 2037. The predicted spatial patterns provide critical insights into future urbanisation trends and light pollution dynamics. The contraction of rural areas and expansion of suburban zones pose notable risks to environmental sustainability. Gains and losses among Bortle classes indicate that ALAN dynamics can be managed through spatial planning and that ALAN projections can serve as early-warning and scenario-based decision-support tools. Integrating ALAN maps into Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) processes and spatial planning policies can help preserve dark-sky areas and mitigate the impacts of light pollution.

Hz. İbrahim’den (a.s.) Hz.

Landslides, as one of the primary natural hazards, are significant mass movements that cause considerable casualties and property damage. The objective of this study is to perform a landslide susceptibility analysis of the Kara Dere Basin, located in the northwest of the Erzincan Plain, and to spatially delineate potential risk areas. In this research, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), a Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) method, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology were utilized. Within the scope of the model, eleven different landslide-conditioning parameters were evaluated: slope, precipitation, lithology, NDVI, slope curvature, distance to streams, land use, elevation, great soil groups, aspect, and distance to roads. As a result of the weighting process applied via the AHP method, slope (25.10%) and precipitation (19.20%) were identified as the most influential factors in landslide occurrence. For the validation of the susceptibility map produced, the historical landslide inventory in the study area was randomly partitioned, utilizing 70% as training data and 30% as independent testing data. The validation procedure, performed using the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve and the Area Under the Curve (AUC) technique, yielded an AUC value of 0.799, demonstrating that the model possesses a scientifically acceptable and reliable predictive capacity. According to the spatial analysis results, it was determined that 43% of the basin consists of high and very high-risk areas, 34% of moderate-risk areas, and 23% of low and very low-risk areas. The most susceptible regions were identified as the high-gradient terrains in the north and northeast of the basin. Furthermore, while certain sections of the Erzincan-Kelkit highway were observed to be located in high-risk zones, it was verified that the Ahmetli Village disaster housing, constructed following a historical landslide event, is appropriately situated in a low-risk area. It is anticipated that the resulting susceptibility map will serve as a crucial scientific baseline for future regional and spatial planning, as well as disaster risk management strategies.

Yılmaz, Hasan; Çelik, Medine; Gökhan, Askan
Objective: This study evaluates six urban parks in the city center of Diyarbakır within the framework of resilient and sustainable urban development using Biodiversity-Friendly criteria. Species richness, distribution evenness, proportions of native and fruit-bearing species, and ecosystem components were analyzed to determine biodiversity levels and Biodiversity-Friendly performance. Materials and Methods: The study covered 15 Temmuz Şehitler Parkı (July 15 Martyrs Park, KP1), Park 75 (Park 75, KP2), Kardeşlik Parkı (Brotherhood Park, KP3), Kent Meydanı (City Square, KP4), Sümer Parkı (Sumer Park, KP5), and Tema Parkı (Tema Park, KP6). Plant species were identified through field surveys, individual counts were conducted, and naturalness status was determined. Species diversity was calculated using the Shannon–Wiener (H′) and Simpson (1–λ) indices via BİÇEB software. Parks were also evaluated using the Biodiversity-Friendly Index, consisting of 10 main and 65 sub-criteria, and comparatively assessed. Results: A total of 173,343 plant individuals were recorded. The highest diversity values were found in KP6 (H′ = 2.93; 1–λ = 0.939) and the lowest in KP3 (H′ = 1.87; 1–λ = 0.796), while evenness was highest in KP5. Biodiversity-Friendly Index scores classified KP6 (85) and KP4 (83) as high-level, KP1 (77) as good, and KP2 (72), KP3 (69), and KP5 (71) as insufficient in mandatory criteria. Native species exceeded 10% in all parks. Conclusion: Biodiversity-friendly suitability depends not only on species richness but also on species evenness, the proportion of native and fruit- bearing species, permeable surfaces, ecological connectivity, and sustainable management approaches. Considering Diyarbakır’s semi-arid climatic conditions, high summer temperatures, and rapid urbanization pressure, the use of native and drought-tolerant species together with the development of permeable and ecologically connected green infrastructure systems is of critical importance. The findings provide a scientific basis for ecosystem-based and climate-sensitive urban park planning in Diyarbakır.

Tas, Muhammed; Günes, Erkan; Alagöz, Gurkan; Uslu, Abdullah
The primary aim of this study is to investigate the effect of residents' place attachment (PA) on support for tourism development (STD) within the framework of Social Exchange Theory (SET). Additionally, the study seeks to examine the moderating role of residents' perceptions of the positive (PI) and negative (NI) impacts of tourism in this interaction. The research population consists of residents living in Divri & gbreve;i, Sivas, T & uuml;rkiye. A total of 307 samples were collected using convenience sampling via a survey. Statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS and AMOS, and the PROCESS Macro was used to test the proposed model. The findings indicate that PA has a significant and positive effect on STD. PI serves as a moderator that strengthens the relationship between PA and STD, whereas NI weakens this effect. The study demonstrates that enhancing PA can strongly encourage residents' STD behaviours, particularly with the contribution of PI. Therefore, measures should be taken to mitigate the negative impacts of tourism and increase local support fortourism.

Urban population growths, expansion of the industrial economy, burning stubble, and other major sources have significantly contributed to the increasing levels of air pollution in urban areas. Therefore, accurate prediction of the Air Quality Index (AQI) is essential for effective monitoring and planning within cities. In this research, an ensemble machine learning (ML) called Gradient Boosting (GB) model with 5- and 10-folds’ cross-validation was developed to achieve more precise and operative prediction outcomes based on important air quality related input variables. The results demonstrated that the suggested hybrid model attained the best accuracy in comparison with other benchmark ML models for predicting AQI values of Delhi city. Statistically, GB model reported second best model based on statistical metrics (R2 = 0.96, R = 0.98, RMSE = 23.03, MSE = 530.71, MAE = 15.16 and MARE = 11.96). Whereas Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LightGBM) model third best accuracy reported (R2 = 0.96, R = 0.98, RMSE = 23.21, MSE = 538.74, MAE = 14.68, and MARE = 11.33). The AQI prediction values are presented as spatial thematic maps for better understanding, highlighting city areas with high AQI levels to support air quality planning. The daily AQI prediction maps were prepared using various ML models. Further, the current research forecasted five days of AQI values and compared with the observed values. The results of five-day forecasting of GB model again indicated the best match with observed data of AQI values. Finally, forecasting accuracy results of GB (Boosting) models was attained 90% match with the observed values of AQI as compared with hybrid model. In conclusion, the reported results provided better understanding of AQI modeling for values and classes of spatial maps.
RDL Kalıcı Kaydıİncele - ArticleAçık Erişim2026National-Scale Estimation of Brake-Wear Particulate Emissions From On-Road Vehicles in Türkiye: A 2024 Inventory with Uncertainty and Mitigation Scenarios
Demirci, Oğuz Kürşat
This research article develops a screening-level national inventory of airborne brake-wear particulate emissions from on-road vehicles in Türkiye for the year 2024. The scope is limited to brake wear only and does not include tyre wear, road wear, resuspension, or concentration and exposure modelling. The inventory combines TurkStat vehicle-kilometre statistics with EMEP/EEA Tier-2 brake-wear emission factors, including passenger-car powertrain differentiation to reflect regenerative-braking effects. Under nominal baseline assumptions, annual emissions are estimated at 5.67 kt•y-1 for PM10 and 2.26 kt•y-1 for PM2.5. Monte Carlo framework that propagates bounded uncertainty in total activity, vehicle-category composition, passenger-car powertrain shares, guidebook-anchored emission factors, and particle-size fractions, the national totals are characterised by a median (95% interval) of 5.67 (4.87-7.19) kt•y-1 for PM10 and 2.26 (1.87-2.90) kt•y-1 for PM2.5 Passenger cars account for approximately 45% of national PM10 emissions, followed by light commercial vehicles and tractor units. Illustrative, assumptiondependent scenario analysis indicates that PM10 could decrease to 4.95 kt•y-1 under partial uptake of low-emission brake technologies, to 5.28 kt•y-1 with greater use of auxiliary braking in heavy-duty vehicles, and to 5.47 kt•y-1 under a passenger-car fleet share of 10% HEV and 10% BEV. These scenario outcomes should be interpreted as indicative screening-level projections rather than empirical or policyevaluation results. Overall, the study provides a transparent brake-wear-only national baseline and a comparative framework for examining how selected assumptions influence estimated PM emissions in Türkiye.

Earthquakes have been one of the most significant natural hazards threatening humanity throughout history. In this study, we aimed to develop an earthquake safety culture scale to psychometrically measure individuals' attitudes and behaviors regarding their personal life safety before and after an earthquake. During the scale development phase, two different surveys were administered for exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The study population consisted of individuals aged 18 and over living in Türkiye. 445 Individuals participated in the EFA and 309 in the CFA. The earthquake safety culture scale, a two-factor structure ("pre-earthquake" and "during and after earthquake"), yielded highly reliable and valid results. It is believed that the resulting scale will contribute to disaster managers in the process of building an earthquake-resilient society, as well as to local and national disaster management policies such as training, awareness, planning, and exercises for community-supported disaster management. It is recommended that this developed scale be retested in different cultures and its relationship with various variables that may influence "pre-earthquake" and "during and after earthquake" attitudes regarding disaster management be investigated.

İnce, Elif Gökçe; Çakıl, Burak; Şimşek, Mutlu; İnce, Ozan
Two major earthquakes occurred on the East Anatolian Fault Zone in Türkiye on February 6, 2023. The epicenter of these earthquakes was Pazarcık and Elbistan, distinct from Kahramanmaraş province. These earthquakes occurred on the same day, 9 hours apart, and effected a very large area. This study evaluates the damage in reinforced concrete buildings during the Kahramanmaraş earthquakes. Firstly, this study examined Türkiye’s seismicity, fault lines, and recent earthquakes in Türkiye. Then, the fault rupture of the Kahramanmaraş earthquakes and the affected regions from these earthquakes were exam-ined. Acceleration records of the Pazarcık and Elbistan earthquakes were evaluated by comparing them with the Türkiye Building Earthquake Code-2018 (TBEC-2018). These acceleration records were compared with the largest earthquake (DD1) and design earthquake (DD2) defined in TBEC-2018. Requirements for earthquake-resistant building design and the deficiencies in the current Türkiye building stock were discussed. Damages in RC buildings were evaluated in terms of design and construction perspectives. It has been observed that deficiencies are frequently made in the application of reinforcement details in RC buildings. Brittle shear damage has been commonly observed in reinforced concrete buildings, even though they are expected to behave ductile. Design and construction deficiencies have been observed to be widespread even in buildings still under construction.

Karakose, Perihan; Ince, Elif Gokce; Eren, Erkin; Atar, Muhammed; Cakil, Burak; Ince, Ozan
Earthquake-resistant design of reinforced concrete (RC) buildings is initiated during the architectural design stage, where the placement and directions of vertical load-bearing elements are defined. The configuration of these elements plays a critical role in the seismic performance of RC structures. In this study, a decision-support system is proposed to automatically identify load-bearing elements from architectural floor plans and to assess torsional irregularity and shear wall distribution. A dataset comprising 600 architectural floor plans of existing buildings was compiled, in which structural components were manually annotated and used to train a YOLO (You Only Look Once)-based detection model. The developed system detects vertical load bearing elements in the floor plan and subsequently evaluates their arrangement using structural engineering criteria, including torsional irregularity and shear wall ratio. The results show that the proposed approach enables rapid and accurate evaluation of architectural floor plans, offering effective support during the early design phase.
RDL Kalıcı Kaydıİncele - ArticleAçık Erişim2026Scenario-based optimization of humanitarian supply chain distribution channels for a possible earthquake: a case study in Türkiye
Balkar, Oğuz Emre; Akar, Alper; Akar, Özlem
Earthquakes represent a serious risk to societies, economies, and critical infrastructure, highlighting the need for effective disaster preparedness and resilient humanitarian supply chains (HSCs). In seismically active regions such as Erzincan Province, Türkiye, HSC distribution networks must remain functional despite significant disruptions. This study proposes a five-stage mixed-method framework to design and optimize HSC distribution channels for a potential major earthquake in the central district of Erzincan. First, buildings and transportation links were evaluated in terms of seismic suitability to pre-select candidate main distribution centers (MDCs), local distribution points (LDPs), and low-risk routes. Proximity analyses were then conducted using Quantum GIS (QGIS) to identify potential LDPs within a 1–5 km service radius for 69 neighborhoods. These locations were further validated and optimized using Greenfield analyses in anyLogistix under a distance–demand cost minimization criterion. Four distribution channel scenarios were subsequently simulated over a two-month post-earthquake period in line with national and international disaster standards. Finally, the Shortest Path Method was applied to assign primary, secondary, and tertiary LDPs to each neighborhood. The results indicate that supplying nine LDPs (comprising schools and healthcare centers) through four MDCs, including a newly designated sports facility, minimizes transportation cost, travel distance, and lead time, while enabling 63.8% of neighborhoods to access their primary LDP within 3 km. The proposed framework offers a holistic approach by explicitly incorporating seismic compliance into the design of HSC distribution channels in earthquake-prone regions.

Yılmaz, Mehmet; Dede, Tayfun
The construction industry, a key contributor to global economic development, significantly impacts environmental pollution through greenhouse gas emissions. While conventional construction project management prioritizes cost and time reduction, environmental considerations are increasingly critical. This study addresses the time-cost-environmental impact trade-off problem by introducing a strength Pareto-based whale optimization algorithm (SP2WOA). The algorithm enhances solution diversity and achieves well-distributed Pareto fronts by integrating strength Pareto operators with the whale optimization algorithm. Its effectiveness is demonstrated through three diverse construction projects. Compared to previous algorithms (non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II, opposition-based multi-objective differential evolution, golden ratio-based opposite teaching-learning-based optimization and enhanced multi-objective grasshopper optimization algorithm), SP2WOA achieves superior balances between time, cost and environmental impact, using 33-60% fewer function evaluations. Statistical analysis using Wilcoxon rank tests confirms SP2WOA's superiority in both hypervolume and spread metrics. The results demonstrate that SP2WOA offers a valuable tool for sustainable construction project management.
RDL Kalıcı Kaydıİncele - ArticleYalnız künye2026Seismic performance of RC buildings with one-way joist slab: Insights from the 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes
İnce, Elif Gökçe
Two major earthquakes (Pazarcık Mw: 7.7 and Elbistan Mw: 7.6) occurred on the East Anatolian Fault Zone in Türkiye on February 6, 2023. These earthquakes caused severe destruction to structures. Türkiye's building stock mostly consists of multi-storey reinforced concrete (RC) buildings. Field investigations conducted after the Kahramanmaraş earthquakes once again revealed the deficiencies in the existing building stock. While the majority of these buildings are designed with a beam-slab system, a one-way joist slab system is frequently encountered. One way a joist slab system generally has wide and shallow beams with low stiffness. Additionally, the use of heavy non-structural materials in this slab type results in a greater building mass. In this study, damages in RC buildings with one-way joist slabs were investigated following the Kahramanmaraş earthquakes. In the design of RC buildings with one-way joist slabs, the cases of regular external beams and the use of shear walls were evaluated through numerical analysis. The analysis results show that shear walls and regular external beams significantly increase the performance of buildings with one-way joist systems. However, the use of seismic shear walls was found to be more effective in increasing horizontal rigidity.

Taş, Mehmet Bilge Han; Özkan, Kemal; Sarıçiçek, İnci; Yazıcı, Ahmet
The Dynamic Electric Vehicle Routing Problem (D-EVRP) presents a framework that requires electric vehicles to meet demand with limited energy capacity. When dynamic demand flows and charging requirements are considered together, traditional methods cannot provide sufficient adaptation for real-time decision-making. Therefore, a learning-based approach was chosen to ensure that decision-making processes respond quickly to changing conditions. The solution utilizes a model with a Double Deep Q-Network (DDQN) architecture and a discrete valuation structure. Prioritized Experience Replay (PER) was implemented to increase model stability, allowing infrequent but effective experiments to contribute more to the learning process. The state representation is constructed using the vehicle’s location, battery level, load status, and current customer demands. Scalability is ensured by dividing customer locations into clusters using the K-means method, with each cluster handled by an independent representative. The approach was tested with real-world road data obtained from the Meşelik Campus of Osmangazi University in Eskişehir. Experiments conducted under different demand levels and data sizes have shown that the PER-assisted DDQN structure produces more stable and shorter route lengths in dynamic scenarios, but random selection, greedy method and genetic algorithm experience significant performance losses as dynamicity increases.
RDL Kalıcı Kaydıİncele - ArticleYalnız künye2026Machine learning and traffic simulation for corridor-level optimization in Intelligent Transportation Systems: reducing travel times, delays, and carbon dioxide emissions
Deniz, Fatih Ahmet; Çolak, Muhammed Ali
Increased individual vehicle ownership has led to longer travel times, increased delays, and higher CO2 emissions in traffic networks. This study aims to optimize intersection designs, lane counts, and signal timings within an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS)-based traffic corridor to reduce travel time, minimize delays and decrease instantaneous CO2 emissions. To achieve this, the current conditions of a seven-intersection corridor were simulated, resulting in 27,647 different scenarios with various combinations of vehicle volumes, intersection properties, lane configurations, and signalization. Incorporating real intersection vehicle count data and signal timings further enhanced the accuracy of the simulations, providing a more realistic representation of traffic flow and helping to refine the optimization of intersection designs, lane counts, and signal settings. In total, 27,648 scenarios, including the baseline scenario, were analyzed, resulting in three datasets that focus on delay time, instantaneous CO2 emissions, and total travel time. These datasets were modeled using various algorithms, including linear regression, support vector regression, elastic net, decision trees, random forests, AdaBoost, gradient boosting, XGBoost, and CatBoost. Among these models, CatBoost was found to be the most effective in explaining delay time, instantaneous CO2 emissions, and total travel time. Feature importance analysis using CatBoost revealed the optimal designs for reducing travel time, minimizing delays, and lowering emissions: modern roundabouts at the Dortyol and Old Police School intersections, and a grade-separation at the Terzibaba intersection. The findings demonstrate that integrating machine learning with traffic simulation can support ITS by improving traffic flow, reducing congestion, and lowering CO2 emissions.

This study presents a model that combines aircraft sequencing and passenger transfer dynamics to analyze the transfer process in terms of delay and how air-to-air and air-to-train transfer passengers reach stations and gates. The model considers real-world factors such as distances inside the terminal, walking times depending on baggage and gender, and waiting times at bus/metro stations. The research includes identifying the flights with the highest number of transfer passengers and conducting the analysis by giving priority to the busiest five aircraft. Individual behaviors of passengers, such as baggage and walking times, are also included in the optimization framework. When the differences between the models are analyzed, passengers' early arrival times at transfer points vary 0-5 minutes. Although this is important, no statistical difference was found. The analysis shows that Model 3 (43%) is superior to the others. While Model 2 reached an average delay of 1,066 seconds, Model 3 produced a delay of 185 seconds. Model 1 and 3 have similar performance. The combination of aircraft sequencing and transfer dynamics is the original contribution of the model. In addition, by including passenger-specific factors and operational constraints in the model, it becomes possible to offer more realistic and practical solutions.

Turan, Ahmet İhsan; Çelik, Alper
This study presents a damage-based comparative assessment of reinforced concrete buildings affected by the 1992 Erzincan earthquake (Mw 6.8) and the 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquake sequence (Pazarcık, Mw 7.7; Elbistan, Mw 7.6), two destructive earthquake events in Türkiye separated by nearly three decades. A distinctive contribution of the study is the presentation of original color photographs from the 1992 Erzincan earthquake, systematically documented and comparatively evaluated for the first time and directly compared with post-earthquake field observations from Malatya following the 2023 earthquake sequence. To complement the field-based evidence, representative strong ground motion records from both earthquake events were processed and compared using standard seismic intensity and spectral response parameters. The spectral evaluation indicates that the 1992 Erzincan ground motion and the 2023 Elbistan-related motion recorded in Malatya imposed comparable seismic demands relevant to typical reinforced concrete buildings, thereby providing a rational basis for cross-event damage interpretation. Despite substantial advances in Turkish seismic design codes, recurrent damage mechanisms were observed in both building stocks, particularly soft-story formation, short-column effects, inadequate transverse reinforcement, poor beam–column joint performance, and deficiencies in material quality and detailing. The findings demonstrate that seismic safety cannot be improved through code development alone unless design provisions are consistently translated into construction quality, detailing practice, inspection, and field implementation.
