Determination of relationships between placental characteristics and birth weight in Morkaraman sheep

    Özyürek, Selçuk; Türkyilmaz, Dogan

The aim at this study was to determine the relationships among the lamb birth weight, the average cotyledon surface area (ACSA) and cotyledon size. Data were collected from 101 ewes. The general linear model and Pearson correlation coefficient were used for statistical comparison and determination of relationships between variables. Average birth weight (BW), placental weight (PW), cotyledon number (CN), placental efficiency (PE), cotyledon density (CD), cotyledon efficiency (CE) and ACSA were 4:175 ± :09, 448:8 ± 13:4, 53:34±1:9, 9:65±:3, 0:125±:00, 10:66±:34 and 7:81±:19 cm2, respectively. There was no difference between BW and PE for parity; however, PW, CN, CD, CE and ACSA were affected (p<0:05) by parity. ACSA was found to be the lowest (7:33 ± :99) with a parity of 2 and the highest (8:61 ± 1:5) with a parity of 4. Birth type affected significantly BW, CN, CD (p<0:05), PW (p<0:001) and ACSA (p<0:01). As the parity progressed, cotyledon depth (CDe) (0:74 ± :30) and cotyledon width (CWi) (2:64 ± :46) increased. ACSA, which is a new parameter for uterine capacity, had positive correlations with BW (0.498; p<0:01), PW (0.415; p<0:01), large cotyledon number (CNl) (0.685; p<0:01), cotyledon length (CL) (0.932; p<0:01), CWi (0.920; p<0:01) and cotyledon depth (0.388; p<0:01). The most important finding of this study was the positive correlation between the birth weight and the average cotyledon surface area. This study indicates that average cotyledon surface area and cotyledon size traits (CL and CWi) may be more effective parameters to produce heavier lambs. In conclusion, it is thought that lamb deaths will decrease as a result of triggering placental development with proper feeding during pregnancy. For this purpose, it is recommended to conduct new studies examining the relationship between pregnancy feeding and ACSA.

Vitis vinifera Turkish grape cultivar Karaerik. Part I: anthocyanin composition, and identification of a newly found anthocyanin†

Hermosín-Gutiérrez, Isidro; Gómez-Alonso, Sergio; Pérez-Navarro, José; Kurt, Aynur; Colak, Nesrin; Akpınar, Erdal; Hayirlioglu-Ayaz, Sema; Ayaz, Faik Ahmet

BACKGROUND: Grape berries exhibit various beneficial health effects due to the potent antioxidant roles of their phenolic compounds. A new Vitis vinifera grape cultivar (Karaerik) grown in Turkey has attracted growing interest due to its antioxidant phenolic compounds, which have still not been investigated. The phenolic/anthocyanin profile needs to be investigated to ascertain its potential health benefits and market value in the region. The present study therefore involves a detailed characterization of the anthocyanin composition of ‘Karaerik’ grape berries in conjunction with a determination of the antioxidant capacity value of the phenolics present in the skin and the whole berry. RESULTS: Total phenolic compounds (average 8.56 and 2.88 g gallic acid equivalent kg−1 fresh weight) and anthocyanin (7.48 and 1.66 g mv-3-glc equivalent kg−1 fresh weight) contents varied significantly in the skin and whole berry. Malvidin-based anthocyanins made the highest contribution to the pigment content of the berry. Accordingly, the major anthocyanin in the skin (average 42.08 mol%) and whole berry (39.98 mol%) was malvidin-3-glucoside (mv-3-glc). In addition, we found strong evidence of the occurrence of sometimes reported malvidin-3-pentoside and particularly of the not previously reported feruloyl derivative of malvidin-3-(6″-feruloyl)-glucoside (mv-3-ferglc) for V. vinifera grapes. CONCLUSION: The current study is the first report to profile the anthocyanins of the grape with a detailed description of the rare and novel anthocyanin in V. vinifera grapes. The berry is also a potential source of phenolics/anthocyanins with a high antioxidant capacity value and is worthy of comparison with other V. vinifera grapes.

Contribution of surface application of chitosan–thyme and chitosan–rosemary essential oils to the volatile composition, microbial profile, and physicochemical and sensory quality of dry-fermented sausages during storage

    Demirok Soncu, E.; Özdemir, N.; Arslan, B.; Küçükkaya, S.; Soyer, A.

The effect of chitosan (C), chitosan enriched with thyme (CT) or rosemary (CR) essential oils, and potassium sorbate (PS) against superficial fungal growth was investigated in fermented sausages during 3 months of storage at 4 °C. For control groups, distilled water (DW) and acetic acid (AA) were used. PS, C, CT and CR treatments inhibited fungal growth on casings while they resulted in lower Gram(+) catalase(+) cocci, Enterobacteriaceae, mold and yeast counts in sausages. Lower TBARS values were determined for CT and CR (p < .05). A total of 44 and 64 volatile compounds were identified in sausages and casings, respectively. Sausages coated with C, CT or CR had acceptable sensory attributes at the end of storage; however, DW and AA groups were rejected in the second and third month (p < .05), respectively, due to intense fungal growth which resulted in sensory defects.

Hosseinpour, Arash; Haliloglu, Kamil; Cinisli, Kagan Tolga; Ozkan, Guller; Ozturk, Halil Ibrahim; Pour-Aboughadareh, Alireza; Poczai, Peter

Salinity is an edaphic stress that dramatically restricts worldwide crop production. Nanomaterials and plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) are currently used to alleviate the negative effects of various stresses on plant growth and development. This study investigates the protective effects of different levels of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) (0, 20, and 40 mg L−1) and PGPBs (no bacteria, Bacillus subtilis, Lactobacillus casei, Bacillus pumilus) on DNA damage and cytosine methylation changes in the tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L. ‘Linda’) seedlings under salinity stress (250 mM NaCl). Coupled Restriction Enzyme Digestion-Random Amplification (CRED-RA) and Randomly Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) approaches were used to analyze changes in cytosine methylation and to determine how genotoxic effects influence genomic stability. Salinity stress increased the polymorphism rate assessed by RAPD, while PGPB and ZnO-NPs reduced the adverse effects of salinity stress. Genomic template stability was increased by the PGPBs and ZnO-NPs application; this increase was significant when Lactobacillus casei and 40 mg L−1 of ZnO-NPs were used.A decreased level of DNA methylation was observed in all treatments. Taken together, the use of PGPB and ZnO-NPs had a general positive effect under salinity stress reducing genetic impairment in tomato seedlings.
