Using Machine Translation as a Self-Directed Language Learning Tool for Low-Proficiency LCTL Learners in a Tandem Partnership

    Türkel, Tuba; Brogaard, Christian

Using an autoethnographic approach, the two authors, as low proficiency-level self-directed language learners of two less commonly taught languages (LCTLs) (i.e., Turkish and Danish), explored the potential of Google Translate (GT) and the factors influencing its efficacy as a language learning tool. Our findings illustrated that GT could be a potential learning tool for self-directed language learners. However, GT's capabilities for particular language pairs and learner qualities, such as machine translation literacy, motivation, and autonomy, play a significant role in its efficacy for language learning. Additionally, a tandem partnership can be utilized effectively to overcome GT's limitations for low proficiency-level LCTL learners.

BIO-FRIENDLY EDUCATIONAL CAMPUSES – EXAMPLE OF ERZİNCAN CITY IN TURKIYE

    Askan, G.; Yilmaz, H.

This study emphasizes outcomes such as the identification of biodiversity in urban areas within Türkiye, the development of strategies to ensure its continuity, the enhancement of resilience against climate change by utilizing natural species in terms of plant material, the effective utilization of resource values, and the creation of awareness at local, national, and international scales. Totally, 10 different educational areas were surveyed, counting 13,323 plants comprising 80 different species, of which 35 are part of the natural flora. In particular, we promote biodiversity in cities by encouraging the planting of more native trees and the use of a greater variety of species that can attract wildlife. Among the identified plants, there are 1,043 edible tree species, 1,871 broadleaf species, 2,393 coniferous species, 828 other ornamental plants, shrubs, and bush types totaling 7,126, and 62 climbing plant species. In these areas, plant species diagnostics, naturalness status, and analyses of edible trees and fruit-bearing plants were conducted. Analyses were also performed according to the Shannon-Wiener diversity index, Simpson diversity index, and Biyodost Educational Campus Index for each area. We recommend considering a design concept that caters not only to humans but also appeals to all living beings for completed and planned educational areas. New concepts such as Bıo-Frıendly Educatıonal Area require collaboration across different disciplines in this field. Academic circles should begin to take the lead in developing and implementing this concept. The collaborative work of these disciplines will contribute to the development of innovative approaches in the design, management, and sustainability of bio-friendly areas.

Career decision-making difficulties in adolescents: the role of parental perfectionism, irrational career beliefs and intolerance of uncertainty

    Ari, Ahmet Emin; Eşkisu, Mustafa

This study examined the relationship between parental expectations, parental criticism, irrational career beliefs, intolerance of uncertainty, and career decision-making difficulties. The research sample comprised 470 high school students. The results indicated that parental expectations negatively influence career decision-making difficulties while positively correlating with parental criticism and irrational career beliefs. Furthermore, parental criticism was positively associated with both irrational career beliefs and intolerance of uncertainty. Both irrational career beliefs and intolerance of uncertainty positively correlated with career decision-making difficulties. Additionally, parental expectations had an indirect relationship with career decision-making difficulties through irrational career beliefs and intolerance of uncertainty. These findings suggest that the cognitive and emotional impacts of parental expectations and critical attitudes complicate the career decision-making process for adolescents. Thus, there is a pressing need to develop a more comprehensive intervention strategy that facilitates adolescents’ career decision-making within the framework of familial attitudes.

Perceived social support and school engagement in sports science students: The moderated mediation of school alienation and social media addiction

Esentürk, Oğuz Kaan; Seçer, Emrah; Yarimkaya, Erkan; İlhan, Ekrem Levent

Introduction and Purpose: This study investigated how sports science university students perceive social support (PSS), its influence on their academic engagement, and the mechanisms that mediate this relationship. Methodology: A total of 466 students (316 males, 150 females) from the Faculty of Sports Sciences participated in the study, which used a relational screening model. Data were collected using the Multidimensional Perceived Social Support Scale, the University Students School Engagement Scale, the School Alienation Scale, and the Social Media Addiction Scale. The measurement model was validated through confirmatory factor analysis, followed by correlation testing and regression analysis using the Bootstrap method to evaluate the study's hypotheses. Results: The analysis identified a positive correlation between PSS and school engagement (SE) (r = 0.45, p < 0.001). In contrast, PSS showed negative correlations with both school alienation (SA) (r =-0.209, p < 0.01) and social media addiction (SMA) (r = −0.113, p < 0.01) (Hypothesis I). Regression analysis using the Bootstrap method revealed a significant indirect effect of PSS on SE via SA (Hypothesis II) [β = 0.181, p < 0.001, 95% Confıdence Interval (CI) = (0.003, 0.039)]. Additionally, SMA moderated the indirect effect of PSS on SE via SA (Hypothesis III) [Situational mediator index = −0.018, Boot SE = 0.001, Boot 95% CI = (−0.003, −0.0001)]. The indirect effect was stronger for individuals with low SMA [Indirect effect = 0.034, Boot SE = 0.182, Boot 95% CI = (0.007, 0.078)] compared to those with high SMA [Indirect effect = 0.018, Boot SE = 0.009, Boot 95% CI = (0.005, 0.0416)]. Conclusion: The findings support all three hypotheses in the study's theoretical framework, confirming the proposed relationships and underlying mechanisms.

How Do Life Positions Mediate the Relationship Between Cognitive Flexibility and Teacher Subjective Well-Being?

Arı, Ahmet Emın; Korkmaz, Burak Can; Özpolat, Ahmet Ragıp; Eşkısu, Mustafa

Within the school context, subjective well-being in teachers is a crucial determinant of their efficacy. Growing research has shown that teacher subjective well-being is linked to cognitive flexibility. The aim of the current study was to examine the mediating effect of life positions (i.e., healthy and unhealthy life positions) on the association between cognitive flexibility and teacher subjective well-being. The study included 302 teachers from public schools in Turkey. Participants were 56% female and 44% male, ranging in age from 23 to 64 years old. The findings indicated that cognitive flexibility was significantly and positively related to a healthy life position and teacher subjective well-being but negatively to an unhealthy life position. The results also suggested that a healthy life position significantly mediates the relationship between cognitive flexibility and teacher subjective well-being. Thus, a healthy life position is a crucial mechanism that may explain the impact of cognitive flexibility on teacher subjective well-being.

COLLABORATIVE PARTNERSHIPS: Epistemic Fluency, Transcultural Competence and the Sustainability of Identity

Carr, Anne; Chumbi, Gabriela B. Bonilla; Abad, Matias; Tineo, Patricia; Constanzo, Pilar; Bulyna, Antonina; Shlotter, Jorge R. Lemos; Alchazidu, Athena; Chudova, Katerina; Booth, William A.

Whilst the ‘hard skills’ of digital technology have simplified the communication process and expanded potential interactive communication opportunities, live interaction on academic teaching and learning tools such as Zoom, creates the possibility of manifesting the authenticity of participatory ‘soft skills’. Transcultural participation requires epistemic fluency and resourcefulness involving a set of capabilities, or ‘soft skills’ for students to develop a critical appreciation of situations with peers, recognizing actions that are systematically desirable and culturally feasible. Since 2021 we have been investigating strategies to support the development of epistemic skills through an innovative transcultural collaboration among professors and students in eight universities across continents and cultures.

Investigating the stages of simplification and mathematisation in mathematical modelling processes of middle school students through Fermi Problems*

    Pekgöz, Sümeyra; Gürel, Zeynep Çakmak

This study aims to investigate the stages of simplification and mathematisation in mathematical modelling processes of sixth- and seventh-grade students through Fermi problems designed from close to distant perspectives. The research is qualitatively designed and is in the form of a case study. The sample of the study consists of a total of 37 students, with 26 in the seventh grade and 11 in the sixth grade. Groups of three to five students were formed based on class size according to the students’ preferences, resulting in a total of nine different groups. This study was completed over 12 weeks/24 class hours through group work and solution presentations. Data were collected through worksheets and group presentation videos belonging to student groups. In the analysis of the data, the steps of the mathematical modelling cycle, specifically “Simplification” and “Mathematisation,” were considered. Variables, models, and strategies that emerged in these steps were analysed using content analysis. According to the results, it was determined that the context used in problems designed from close to distant perspectives influenced students’ strategies. In the simplification stage, sixth-grade students predominantly relied on external sources, whereas seventh-grade students showed a greater tendency to use digital tools and draw upon prior knowledge and experiences. In the mathematisation stage, as problem contexts moved further from students’ immediate surroundings, strategies such as concentration measurement, reduction/proportion usage, and reference points became more prominent, with seventh-grade students exhibiting a stronger reliance on these approaches.

Mobile-assisted language learning with Babbel and Duolingo: comparing L2 learning gains and user experience

Kessler, Matt; Loewen, Shawn; Gönülal, Talip

Despite the influx of research examining various aspects of mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) applications (apps) over the past two decades, there have been no head-to-head studies that have investigated the comparative effectiveness of different mobile apps. The current study addresses this gap by directly comparing two of the most well-researched and popular MALL apps: Babbel and Duolingo. In this mixed methods study, adult learners (N = 59) engaged in studying Turkish as a foreign language using either Babbel (n = 27) or Duolingo (n = 32) for eight weeks. Participants then completed two exit assessments, including (1) a posttest gauging their development of various language skills (i.e. reading, writing, speaking, listening, vocabulary, and grammatical competence), and (2) a survey assessing their user experience (e.g. enjoyment, motivation, beliefs about effectiveness). The results of this study showed that although both the Babbel and Duolingo groups made progress, there were no statistically significant differences between their L2 learning gains. However, for the Babbel group, there was a stronger correlation between participants’ study time and their posttest scores. Finally, Babbel users also felt the app was more effective for learning grammar, speaking/pronunciation skills, and for learning about the target language culture. This study discusses the implications of these findings for researchers and MALL users more broadly.

Profiles of social and emotional learning skills in adolescents: a latent profile analysis

    Ağirkan, Murat; Haspolat, Namık Kemal

This study aimed to identify distinct latent profiles of social and emotional learning (SEL) skills in adolescents and examine how these profiles are associated with distal outcomes such as academic success, absenteeism, disciplinary status, participation in school activities, and relationships with peers and teachers. By treating these factors as outcomes related to SEL profiles, the study provides a nuanced understanding of their long-term impact. Data were collected from 1234 adolescents (528 females, 42.8%; 706 males, 57.2%) and Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) was used to identify distinct groups. Three latent profiles emerged: ‘SEL-Risk’; ‘Prosocial-Low Intrapersonal’; and ‘SEL-Competent’. The findings offer a comprehensive view of the interaction between SEL skills and distal outcomes, addressing a critical gap in the literature. By clarifying these interactions as both co-occurring and influencing immediate and long-term outcomes, this study provides valuable insights for educational practices and interventions.
