The Complexity of the Grading System in Turkish Higher Education

    Gur, Recep; Koroglu, Mustafa

Based on the academic performance grades of university students, various high-stakes decisions are made, including determinations of pass/fail status, the awarding of diplomas, and eligibility for placement in graduate education programs. According to the criteria used, the types of assessment are divided into two assessment, criterion-referenced assessments and norm referenced assessments. When the grading system of state universities in Turkish higher education is examined, it has been observed that some universities use criterion-referenced assessment, some use norm-referenced assessment, and some use both assessment systems. The purpose of this research is to examine whether inter-university grading systems show significant concordance in the context of university students' letter grades or not. In other words, it is to reveal whether there are skew in the grading systems of public universities. In this context, 250 individuals were simulated in a way that their class/group achievement level would show a normal distribution. Among the public universities in the 2021-2022 Academic Performance Ranking of Universities (URAP), four state universities were determined in the first quarter, second quarter, third quarter, and last quarter. The letter grades of each student's academic success grade in the relevant universities were determined and it was examined whether there was a significant concordance between the letter grades of the students. In the study, it was concluded that in the context of university students' letter grades, interuniversity grading systems generally do not show significant concordance. The findings are expected to contribute to the work of the Council of Higher Education and the University Education Commissions.

THE EFFECT OF PRESERVICE TEACHERS' INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES COMPETENCIES ON ACADEMIC SELF-EFFICACY AND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT

Bahar, Hüseyin Hüsnü; Öz, Recep; Kayalar, Murat Tolga

The purpose of this study was to measure the ICT competency levels and academic self-efficacy perception levels of preservice teachers and to determine if those levels were a significant predictor of their academic self-efficacy. For this purpose, the data were obtained from 411 volunteer students studying in the second, third, and fourth grades of the Teacher Training Undergraduate Programs at Erzincan Binali Yıldırım University Education Faculty. In total, 133 male and 278 female students participated in the study. As data collection tools, the Personal Information Form, the Information and Communication Technology Competencies Scale for Pre-service Teachers (ICTC-PT) developed by Tondeur et al. (2017) and adapted to Turkish language and culture by Alkan and Sarıkaya (2018) as well as the Academic Self-Efficacy Scale (ASES) developed by Kandemir (2010) were used. The Personal Information Form included information regarding department, grade, gender, and GPA. The reliability analyses of the scales were carried out, as well as multiple and stepwise regression analyses and descriptive statistics to address the research questions. As a result, it was determined that pre-service teachers' perception of ICT self-efficacy was at a high level. A moderate level of perception was observed in the sub-dimensions of ASE-CAP, ASE-AE, and ASE-APL among the participants. ICT-ID was found to be a significant predictor of ASE-CAP, but not of CSP-ICT. Although CSP-ICT was more closely related to general competencies, ICT-ID appeared to be more closely related to the skills required by the teaching profession. Based on the results of the study, the ASE-CAP, ASE-APL, and ICT sub-dimension scores were not significant predictors of GPA, whereas the ASE-AE score was a significant and positive predictor of GPA. It could be concluded from these findings that experiences and activities aimed at improving students' self-efficacy perceptions contributed positively to academic achievement in teacher training programs.

Examining students’ mathematical modeling competences in video-based modeling tasks

    Aytemiz, Hande; Çakmak Gürel, Zeynep

Empirical studies demonstrate that students have some difficulties with the mathematical modeling process. Studies contain various applications for developing students’ modeling competencies. This study investigated video-based modeling tasks’ impact on modeling competencies with a descriptive design. In this context, it aims to compare eighth-grade secondary school students’ modeling competencies in the environment where modeling tasks are presented on a video and worksheet. Differences and similarities between the two groups were observed in this study. Specifically, while both groups acted similarly in the mathematical working and interpretation stages, differences between the two groups were found in favor of the group whose video-based activities were applied to creating real and mathematical models. Especially video-based modeling situations can be considered an effective tool for creating real and mathematical models. The study results confirm that video-based modeling tasks contribute to incorporating students’ real-life experiences into the modeling process.

Social Justice Perception of Pre-Service Visual Arts Teachers: Visual Inquiries

    Güler, Ebru

This study seeks to reveal the perceptions of pre-service visual arts teachers on social justice through art-based practices focused on social justice. Designing on visual phenomenology, this study was performed in the fall semester of the 2018-2019 academic year. Five different activities involving visual inquiries are presented to reveal the perceptions of the pre-service teachers on social justice. The research participants are 35 (13 male, 22 female) sophomore-level pre-service teachers. The data are obtained through course documents, reflective diaries and semi-structured interviews. The data are then analysed through content analysis; reliability and validity are ensured through triangulation. This study identifies four different themes: association, questioning, transformation and reflection. The findings show that the pre-service teachers questioned common issues related to social justice. It was observed in the activities performed in this study that the pre-service teachers identified the visual themes. They mentioned common social justice issues based on the things they experienced and their observations. These are such as women's rights, violence against women, children's rights, LGBT, animal rights, language and religion differences, income imbalance, racism, and discrimination. The issues they questioned were the direct expression of the individual experiences of the pre-service teachers through visuals.

Dynamic assessment as a learning-oriented assessment approach

Özturan, Tuba; Gürdal, Hacer Hande Uysal

This chapter presents the theoretical background of dynamic assessment ( DA ) and its praxis with pedagogical suggestions for foreign language writing instructional settings. Resting on Vygotsky's sociocultural theory (1978), DA asserts that there is a need for blending instruction with assessment because of the social interaction's salience on cognition modification. Thus, DA adopts learning-and-learner-based feedback approaches and a present-to-future model of assessment, which rests on reciprocal teacher-learner interaction. Grounding in the need for enlightening DA in an EFL setting, this chapter presents reciprocal interactions between a teacher and four students. The interaction analyses unveil that the teacher has adopted a variety of mediational moves to finely instruct the students and diagnose their microgenesis, and students have displayed various reciprocity acts towards the mediational moves provided to them, which unpacks each student's zone of proximal development. Based on these findings, the chapter ends with suggestions for EFL writing teachers.

Investigating EFL learners’ humorous interactions with an intelligent personal assistant

    Gonulal, Talip

Intelligent personal assistants (IPAs), which are voice-activated agents enabling human–computer interaction, have recently been reported to be pedagogically useful agents in language learning. IPAs use various forms of humor to better communicate with users and to compensate for any performance limitations. In order to understand the IPAs’ sense of humor and their language teaching potential, this study investigated language learners’ reactions to IPA’s humor responses. Forty-two English language learners, whose language levels varied from intermediate to upper-intermediate, engaged in humorous interactions with one particular IPA (i.e. Google Assistant), which was installed on their mobile devices, by using 15 funny prompts. The learners were then asked to rate the IPA’s responses in terms of how funny they were and to share their perceptions of the potential use of IPA in language learning processes. The results indicated that the learners rated most IPA responses as quite humorous and found the IPA’s overall sense of humor to be higher than average. Further, learners reported that IPAs could be highly useful agents to improve both their overall English and their discrete language skills. Overall, this study shows that IPAs with some sense of humor have a lot to offer to language learners.

Discussion contents during a lesson study conducted with knowledgeable others

    Kanbolat, Oben; Arslan, Selahattin

Over the past two centuries, lesson study has been applied in different countries with different participant profiles. Lesson study is defined as a dynamic research-learning cycle of planning, applying, observing, and analyzing a lesson. Although the participants' discussions in lesson study practices were examined from different perspectives, they have not been analyzed in depth in terms of their contributions to teachers' and preservice teachers' professional development. In this study, the content and frequency of participants' discussions are examined. Six weeks of research were conducted by an academician, a teacher, and three mathematics pre-service teachers. The data were collected through field notes, video recordings, interviews, and focus group interviews. A total of eleven major headings were identified in the lesson study, concerning pedagogical and mathematical issues. The study also concluded that while classroom management was the most widely discussed topic, group and individual instructional techniques received less attention.

Visual and Symbolic Representations as Components of Algebraic Reasoning

Ünal, Zehra E.; Ala, Aslı M.; Kartal, Gamze; Özel, Serkan; Geary, David C.

Sixty (35 girls) ninth graders were assessed on measures of algebraic reasoning and usage of visual and symbolic representations (with a prompt for visual use) to solve equations and inequalities. The study grouped visual representations into two categories: arithmetic-visual, which entailed the use of real-world objects to represent specific values of variables, and algebraic-visual, which involved formal representations like the number line and the coordinate plane. Symbolic representations, on the other hand, encompassed the use of standard algorithms to solve equations, such as changing the place of terms in an equation. The results reveal that the use of algebraic visuals, as opposed to arithmetic visuals, was associated with enhanced algebraic reasoning. Further, although the students initially relied on standard algorithms to explain equations and inequalities, they could produce accurate algebraic-visual representations when prompted. These findings suggest that students have multiple representations of equations and inequalities but only express visual representations when asked to do so. In keeping with the general relationship between visuospatial abilities and mathematics, self-generated algebraic-visual representations partially mediated the relation between overall mathematics achievement and algebraic reasoning.

Ağırkan, Murat; Koç, Muharrem; Avcı, Özlem Haskan

Recent research shows that group-based psychoeducation programs designed for parents of children with ASD have grown in popularity over time. The international evidence for the effectiveness of psychoeducation programs designed for parents of children with ASD in developed societies emphasizes the importance of providing a synthesis of the effectiveness of programs in developing societies. This study's primary aim is to assess the efficacy of group-based psychoeducation programs in Turkey for parents of children with ASD. The second aim is to investigate how the programs are influenced by the potential moderators (type of involvement, research design, number of sessions, duration of sessions, and number of participants). For these purposes, a database search was conducted that included group-based psychoeducation programs for parents of children with ASD implemented in Turkey. Twelve group-based psychoeducation programs that met the inclusion criteria were included in the study. The results showed that group-based psychoeducation programs for parents of children with ASD had “medium” effects on psychological symptoms [ES(SE) = 0.65 (.08), 95%CI (0.48–0.81)], “low” effects on social skills [ES(SE) = 0.32 (.16), 95%CI (0.02–0.62)], and “high” effects on well-being [ES(SE) = 1.05 (.19), 95%CI (0.66–1.43)]. According to moderator analyses, the type of involvement and the number of sessions were statistically significant moderators of psychological symptoms, but not the research design, duration of sessions, or number of participants.

Skill-based problems from the perspective of pre-service mathematics teachers: A lesson study practice

    Kanbolat, Oben

The aim of the study is to present the views of pre-service mathematics teachers about skill-based problems and the use of such problems in the learning environment. The sample of the research consisted of 31 pre-service mathematics teachers studying in the elementary mathematics teaching programme of a state university, attending the problem solving course in mathematics and participating in the lesson study practice focused on skill-based problem solving. Interviews were also conducted with 10 pre-service teachers who were selected on a voluntary basis from the pre-service teachers who participated in the lesson study practices. The data in the study were obtained through interviews with pre-service teachers, meeting minutes of the lesson study groups in which pre-service teachers participated, and documents. The data obtained were subjected to inductive content analysis. In the study, it was observed that pre-service teachers mostly used internet sources, written sources and rarely used external experts as sources for accessing skill-based problems. In addition, it was seen that the features that shaped the definitions of skills-based problems of pre-service teachers were related to the statement of the problem, the setting-context of the problem, the problem solving process, mathematical skills, valuing mathematics, the relationship of the problem with the outcomes and the difficulty level of the problem. Moreover, all of the interviewed pre-service teachers stated that the use of skill-based problems in mathematics classes is important and necessary. It is suggested that teachers should be included in such skill-based problem solving-oriented lesson study practices by referring to the opportunities offered to pre-service teachers by the lesson study process experienced by pre-service teachers during the research process.

Teaching mathematical modeling in the classroom: Analyzing the scaffolding methods of teachers

    Çakmak Gürel, Zeynep

Empirical studies demonstrate that students have various difficulties in the mathematical modeling and therefore need teacher support. This research explains teacher support in mathematical modeling through the three characteristics of scaffolding (i.e., contingency, fading, and transfer of responsibility). Studies using this theoretical perspective involve open questions concerning which teacher support is suitable for effective scaffolding methods. This study aims to examine the scaffolding methods of teachers who used different participant structures during mathematical modeling activities. This paper argues that teachers’ participation structures relate to their scaffolding methods. It also addresses issues that teachers may reflect on while supporting modeling activities.

Psychological symptoms in high achieving students: The multiple mediating effects of parental achievement pressure, perfectionism, and academic expectation stress

    Haspolat, Namık Kemal; Yalçın, İlhan

The study aimed to investigate the correlations between psychological symptoms in high-achieving students with performance-oriented assessment, parental psychological control, parental achievement pressure, perfectionism, and academic expectation stress. The study group consisted of 1134 science high school students (658 females [57.1%], 486 males [42.9%]) aged between 14 and 19 years (mean = 16.26, SD = 0.871). In the research, the Classroom Assessment Environment Scale, Leuven Adolescent Perceived Parenting Scale, Parental Achievement Pressure Scale, Academic Expectation Stress Inventory, Child and Adolescent Perfectionism Scale, and Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 were used as data collection tools. The research, using the correlational survey model, analyzed the data with structural equation modeling. In the structural model, performance-oriented assessment and parental psychological control significantly predicted parental achievement pressure, while parental achievement pressure significantly predicted perfectionism, academic expectation stress, and psychological symptoms. Parental achievement pressure had a mediating role in the relationship between performance-oriented assessment and parental psychological control with psychological symptoms. Performance-oriented assessment and parental psychological control indirectly predicted psychological symptoms mediated by parental achievement pressure, perfectionism, and academic expectation stress. Based on the multigroup structural equation model, it was also seen that the structural model did not differ by gender.

Relative contributions of g and basic domain-specific mathematics skills to complex mathematics competencies

Ünal, Zehra E.; Kartal, Gamze; Ulusoy, Serra; Ala, Aslı M.; Yılmaz, Münibe Z.; Geary, David C.

Meta-analytic structural equation modeling was used to estimate the relative contributions of general cognitive ability or g (defined by executive functions, short-term memory, and intelligence) and basic domain-specific mathematical abilities to performance in more complex mathematics domains. The domain-specific abilities included mathematics fluency (e.g., speed of retrieving basic facts), computational skills (i.e., accuracy at solving multi-step arithmetic, algebra, or geometry problems), and word problems (i.e., mathematics problems presented in narrative form). The core analysis included 448 independent samples and 431,344 participants and revealed that g predicted performance in all three mathematics domains. Mathematics fluency contributed to the prediction of computational skills, and both mathematics fluency and computational skills predicted word problem performance, controlling g. The relative contribution of g was consistently larger than basic domain-specific abilities, although the latter may be underestimated. The patterns were similar across younger and older individuals, individuals with and without a disability (e.g., learning disability), concurrent and longitudinal assessments, and family socioeconomic status, and have implications for fostering mathematical development.
