Dirty dozen scale: A study of adaptation to Turkish university students; [Karanlık Üçlü Ölçeği: Türk üniversite öğrencilerinde uyarlama çalışması]

Satici, Seydi Ahmet; Kayış, Ahmet Rıfat; Yilmaz, Muhammet Fatih; Eraslan Çapan, Bahtiyar

Objective: In recent years, Machiavellianism, psychopathy and narcissism have been considered together as the dark sides of the personality. In this study, the purpose is to adapt the Dirty Dozen Scale to Turkish culture. Meth-ods: Four steps have been conducted in this study. These studies are linguistic equivalence study, structure and concurrent validity study, predictive validity study, and reliability study, respectively. Nine hundred and thirty-two university students (61% female), who were included in the four steps, participated in the study. Results: Applying a confirmatory factor analysis [X2 (51,430)=145.16, p<0.001; CFI=0.96; GFI=0.95; IFI=0.96; SRMR=0.047; RMSEA= 0.066, 90% CI (0.053-0.078)] a structure was determined made up of three factors which corroborated the structure of the original scale. The result of the predictive validity showed that physical aggression positively predicted Machiavellianism, psychopathy and narcissism; verbal aggression positively predicted psychopathy and narcis-sism; anger positively predicted psychopathy and narcissism; hostility positively predicted psychopathy and narcis-sism. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficients have been calculated as 0.79 for Machiavellianism, 0.71 for psychopathy and 0.87 for narcissism. Discussion: The findings of the study have shown that the Turkish form of the Dirty Dozen Scale is a valid and reliable scale to measure the Machiavellianism, psychopathy and narcissism personality traits. Future studies will cast light on the understanding of the structure of the Dark Triad Personality Traits in Turkish culture.

Towards secure e-voting using ethereum blockchain

Koç, Ali Kaan; Yavuz, Emre; Çabuk, Umut Can; Dalkiliç, Gökhan; Varol, A.; Karabatak, M.; Varol, C.

There is no doubt that the revolutionary concept of the blockchain, which is the underlying technology behind the famous cryptocurrency Bitcoin and its successors, is triggering the start of a new era in the Internet and the online services. While most people focus only at cryptocurrencies; in fact, many administrative operations, fintech procedures, and everyday services that can only be done offline and/or in person, can now safely be moved to the Internet as online services. What makes it a powerful tool for digitalizing everyday services is the introduction of smart contracts, as in the Ethereum platform. Smart contracts are meaningful pieces of codes, to be integrated in the blockchain and executed as scheduled in every step of blockchain updates. E-voting on the other hand, is another trending, yet critical, topic related to the online services. The blockchain with the smart contracts, emerges as a good candidate to use in developments of safer, cheaper, more secure, more transparent, and easier-to-use e-voting systems. Ethereum and its network is one of the most suitable ones, due to its consistency, widespread use, and provision of smart contracts logic. An e-voting system must be secure, as it should not allow duplicated votes and be fully transparent, while protecting the privacy of the attendees. In this work, we have implemented and tested a sample e-voting application as a smart contract for the Ethereum network using the Ethereum wallets and the Solidity language. Android platform is also considered to allow voting for people who do not have an Ethereum wallet. After an election is held, eventually, the Ethereum blockchain will hold the records of ballots and votes. Users can submit their votes via an Android device or directly from their Ethereum wallets, and these transaction requests are handled with the consensus of every single Ethereum node. This consensus creates a transparent environment for e-voting. In addition to a broad discussion about reliability and efficiency of the blockchain-based e-voting systems, our application and its test results are presented in this paper, too.

Two Islamic Movements in conflict in terms of linguistic nationalism

    Gülmez, Recep

Religion and nationalism are not only two distinctive but also closely related concepts when it comes to nation-building. Their role in language policy and linguistic nationalism is pervasive. Today, in Turkey, two religious movements of the same origin play a key role in linguistic nationalism and decision-making in language policy: the Gülen movement and the Med-Zehra movement. These two non-governmental affinities are important groups in the Nur movement. The Gülen movement is supportive of Turkish nationalism and thereby Turkish language and identity, while the Med-Zehra group emphasizes Kurdish identity and separatism. This study makes a comparison between the two movements and investigates in detail their role in language policy and linguistic nationalism.

Evaluating the application of possibility and equality of opportunity in higher education according to chaos theory

Avcı, Müjdat; Özbaş, Mehmet; Akbaşlı, Sait

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the situations related to possibility and equality of opportunity in higher education in terms of chaos theory. During the research process, the aim was to determine the extent to which socio-economic chaos arising from student characteristics affected the possibility and equality of opportunity in higher education. In democratic countries, where it is considered that almost all professions with a high social status cannot be acquired without having a higher education qualification, higher education as a fundamental human right should be disseminated to different classes of the society. In this research, functions of a democratic educational administration upon the possibility and equality of opportunity in higher education in Turkey were discussed within the scope of sociologic variables. The population of “The Research for Equality of Opportunity and Possibility in Higher Education within the Concept of Democratic and Sociologic Features” included 29,477 students studying at Erzincan and Mersin Universities in 2012–2013 academic year; and the study sample included 776 students chosen with random cluster sampling model according to the faculties of both universities. Students with illiterate mothers were found to have benefited from the secondary education at a lower level than the other student groups. The student groups with high school and university graduate mothers were found to have benefited from the secondary education opportunities at a higher level.
