Afet toplanma alanlarının engelli erişilebilirliği seviyesinin tespit edilmesi: Erzincan şehir merkezi örneği

    Kesik, Ozan Arif

Firat, Meryem; Ozturk, Senay; Gökmen, Burcu Demir

The serial mediating role of perceived injustice and perceived victimization in the effect of perceived organizational barriers on organizational cynicism among healthcare workers

    Tarsuslu, Sinan; Agaoglu, Ferhat Onur

This study examined how perceived injustice and victimization shape healthcare workers' cynical attitudes toward organizational barriers. A cross-sectional design was adopted in this study, and the serial mediation role of perceived injustice and victimization was examined. Based on a quantitative data collection method, this study is also a descriptive-relationship-seeking type. In order to fulfill the objectives of the study, scales with proven validity and reliability in the literature were used. The study sample consists of doctors, nurses, medical secretaries, auxiliary health personnel, and administrative staff working in a small-scale public hospital in the Eastern Anatolia Region of Turkey. A simple random sampling method was preferred in sample selection. When the research findings were evaluated, positive and significant relationships were found between the organizational barriers perceived by healthcare professionals and perceived injustice, victimization, and organizational cynicism behaviors. The results revealed that both perceived injustice and perceived victimization separately mediated the effect of perceived organizational barriers on organizational cynicism, and that these two variables also played a serial mediating role. Accordingly, it was demonstrated that feelings of injustice and victimization experienced in organizational processes increase healthcare workers’ organizational cynicism.

GENDER, MIGRATION AND URBAN LIFE: A STUDY ON AFGHAN WOMEN IN ERZINCAN

Kemahli Garipoglu, Funda; Sezer Sanli, Aysem; Yildiz Karakoc, Duygu

Due to interruptions in the political regime, instability and occupations, Afghanistan has long been a country of migration to many countries. T & uuml;rkiye, in its role as a transit nation, has emerged as a significant destination for Afghan migrants. Women migrants face heightened challenges during the migratory process and are subject to various forms of oppression in the countries they migrate to. Intersectionality, a foundational concept in feminist theory, provides a crucial framework for analysing the interplay between migration and gender. In this study, which aims to analyse the urban life experiences of female migrants on the basis of gender and migration, the urban life experiences of Afghan women living in Erzincan were examined through qualitative research and in-depth interviews. The findings reveal that migration and adaptation processes of migrant women are made more difficult by intersecting dynamics such as gender, class belonging and migrant identity.

Gender and Intersectional Bias in Cybersecurity for Next Generation Wireless Networks

Caner-Yildirim, Sonay; Corradini, Isabella; Dimitrova, Vesna; Loscri, Valeria; Harizaj, Miranda

The advancement of wireless networks towards sixth-generation (6G) and pervasive artificial intelligence (AI) underscores critical barriers to trustworthy cybersecurity, notably algorithmic bias, workforce underrepresentation, and the neglect of intersectional gender perspectives. Current cybersecurity research predominantly emphasizes algorithmic performance, often overlooking broader societal impacts such as equity and inclusivity. This paper addresses this gap by synthesizing interdisciplinary lessons from emerging technology deployments, critically examining risks inherent in AI-driven 6G security, and articulating the urgent need for an 'Equity by Design' approach. We introduce a comprehensive roadmap to embed intersectional equity into cybersecurity processes - from policy-making and technical development to real-world deployment. Utilizing the BEiNG-WISE COST Action as a best-practice case study, we demonstrate how explicit gender-inclusive and participatory methodologies can effectively operationalize equity, transparency, and diversity. Our findings illustrate that integrating social and technical dimensions is essential for building secure, resilient, and equitable digital futures.

Investigation of individual cultural values and perceived gender role on disaster management in Generation Z earthquake victims

Akkaş, Ibrahim; Bulbuloglu, Semra; Aslan, Sinan; Cetintas, Ahmet

Introduction: High magnitude earthquakes are a natural disaster, often resulting in psychosocial and economic devastation. In patriarchal societies, women may suffer more losses than men and may be disadvantaged in earthquake management. Generation Z has more independent personal characteristics than previous generations, which may have an impact on gender perceptions and individual cultural values on earthquake management. Objective: This study aimed to examine the gender perception and individual cultural values of Generation Z earthquake victims on earthquake management. Method: This descriptive study was conducted in Malatya, one of the cities affected by the earthquake on February 6, 2023, 2 years after the earthquake, with the participation of n = 226 Generation Z earthquake victims who married or sharing a home with a partner for at least 6 months. Earthquake victim information form, Perception of Gender Role on Disaster Management Scale (PGR-DMS) and Individual Culture Values Scale (CVSCALE) were used for data collection. The PGR-DMS measures gender perception, and higher scores indicate a more positive gender perception. CVSCALE measures individual cultural values and has five sub-dimensions: Power Distance, Uncertainty Avoidance, Collectivism, Long-Term Orientation and Masculinity. Higher score on a subscale indicates that participants embrace the cultural value measured in that dimension for CVSCALE. Descriptive tests, Mann–Whitney U, Chi Squared and Spearman Rho correlation tests were used in data analysis. Results: 75.7% of the Generation Z earthquake victims who participated in the study were between 21 and 25 years old and 72.6% were female. 63.3% of Generation Z earthquake victims were high school graduates and 74.3% were employed. 20.8% of Generation Z earthquake victims had a chronic disease, and 15.5% of them had a spouse with a chronic disease. As a result of this study, the PGR-DMS was higher in earthquake victims whose spouses had chronic diseases and this difference was statistically significant (p = 0.030). There was a statistically significant strong relationship between the number of children and PGR-DMS (r = 0.711, p = 0.014). There was a positive, strong and statistically significant correlation between PGR-DMS and Collectivism (r = 0.754, p = 0.021). Conclusion: As a result of this study, having a chronic disease in the spouse of Generation Z earthquake victims and an increase in the number of children positively increased the perception of gender in earthquake management. Generation Z earthquake victims’ perception of gender in earthquake management, Collectivism and Long-term orientation were above average. As the collectivism of Generation Z earthquake victims increased, the perception of gender in earthquake management raised positively.

Unpacking mathematical gender stereotypes: trends and directions from 25 years of research

    Nurlu, Özge

Gender norms shape multiple domains, including mathematics—long framed as a male-dominated field—thereby fostering pervasive mathematical gender stereotypes (MGS) that affect individuals’ participation and achievement. This study aims to systematically synthesize empirical research published between 1999 and 2024, indexed in Web of Science, written in English, and available in full text. Only articles explicitly examining MGS were included; studies focused on broader STEM stereotypes, non-English publications, records without full-text access, and papers outside the specified time window were excluded. Limitations include the absence of protocol pre-registration—although inclusion/exclusion criteria and the analysis plan were specified in writing prior to the search and PRISMA 2020 guidelines were followed—and the unavoidable subjectivity in interpretation and categorization despite established inter-coder reliability. Analyses indicate that most studies are situated in psychology, frequently employ experimental designs, and primarily sample university students. Surveys dominate data collection, and parametric inferential statistics are commonly used. Geographically, the literature is concentrated in Western countries—particularly the United States and Germany—with limited contributions from the Global South. Publication counts fluctuate over time, with notable peaks in 2012 and 2022. Conceptually, the literature converges on two principal axes: (i) belief/domain-ownership formulations centered on male superiority and (ii) process-based formulations centered on ST. Less frequently examined yet theoretically informative extensions include endorsement, internalization, counter-stereotypic role models, and stereotype lift. Across qualitative, descriptive, correlational, mediation, meta-analytic, and experimental evidence, findings consistently cluster around these axes, with stereotype endorsement and MGS occupying central positions. Taken together, the results underscore the need for future research that is more interdisciplinary, cross-cultural, and methodologically diverse to more comprehensively address MGS.

Innovative Ways of Cooperating with Public Administration for Gender Equity in Informatics

Caner-Yıldırım, Sonay; Harizaj, Miranda; Shakarishvili, Salome

Gender inequity in informatics remains a persistent global challenge, with women significantly underrepresented in both educational and professional domains. This disparity not only constrains diversity and innovation but also hinders the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG 5), which endeavors to achieve gender equity and empower all women and girls. This chapter explores innovative strategies for public administration to foster gender equity in informatics. It aims to analyze the current challenges, develop a transformative vision for a supportive ecosystem, and propose concrete actions and innovative instruments to empower women in the field. A comprehensive methodological approach was applied, encompassing an in-depth literature review, policy analysis, and the assessment of best practices and case studies from diverse organizations and countries. The analysis revealed several barriers to achieving gender equity in informatics, including pervasive stereotypes, gaps in digital literacy, and underrepresentation in decision-making and entrepreneurial roles. To address these challenges, the chapter proposes targeted actions and innovative tools, including integrating gender considerations into legislation, the promotion of professional networks, the establishment of equitable care systems, the provision of equal opportunities for skills development, the increased representation of women in AI, the advancement of gender-inclusive AI research, and the facilitation of strategic partnerships. By adopting gender-responsive policies, encouraging collaboration with academia, the private sector, and civil society, and promoting inclusive practices, public administration can foster a more equitable and innovative informatics sector. These strategies not only enhance diversity and problem-solving capabilities but also contribute to broader societal and economic progress in the future.

Profiles of social and emotional learning skills in adolescents: a latent profile analysis

    Ağirkan, Murat; Haspolat, Namık Kemal

This study aimed to identify distinct latent profiles of social and emotional learning (SEL) skills in adolescents and examine how these profiles are associated with distal outcomes such as academic success, absenteeism, disciplinary status, participation in school activities, and relationships with peers and teachers. By treating these factors as outcomes related to SEL profiles, the study provides a nuanced understanding of their long-term impact. Data were collected from 1234 adolescents (528 females, 42.8%; 706 males, 57.2%) and Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) was used to identify distinct groups. Three latent profiles emerged: ‘SEL-Risk’; ‘Prosocial-Low Intrapersonal’; and ‘SEL-Competent’. The findings offer a comprehensive view of the interaction between SEL skills and distal outcomes, addressing a critical gap in the literature. By clarifying these interactions as both co-occurring and influencing immediate and long-term outcomes, this study provides valuable insights for educational practices and interventions.

Actions for Gender Balance in Informatics Across Europe

Penzenstadler, Birgit; Boudaoud, Karima; Di Marco, Antinisca; Caner-Yıldırım, Sonay

This book is a open access. The primary purpose of this book is to serve as a comprehensive guide, translating research into best practices to promote gender inclusivity in informatics. The handbook seeks to empower its readers, providing them with actionable recommendations to bridge the gender gap in informatics. This initiative aims to have an immediate impact on the informatics community, raising awareness and interest through its practical resources, and on the society bringing more women into computer science and technological studies and following career steps. This book provides you with five years of research on gender equity and improving the gender balance in Informatics across Europe. It translates current research on gender inclusivity into practical strategies and intervention methods. It offers recommendations for the recruitment, retention, and promotion of female computer scientists at different academic and industrial levels, and insights into fostering mutually beneficial cooperation between universities and industries. We have collected data from different target audiences and different education and career levels to provide insights into why we have low girl and women participation rates in sciences, why we have a leaky pipeline in academia, and why women leave the industry. We have analyzed this data and identified four target audiences for activities and policy influence. We provide sets of recommendations for each of these target groups on how to become active in advocacy as well as specific actions in their daily environments to improve learning and work environments as well as retention of women students and personnel. We provide ample scenarios of how to apply our findings in practice and share materials both in the book as well as in free public access online documentation to further disseminate and make use of this knowledge. The book serves as joint European voice of Informatics to increase the equity for women in the field.

Background: Asthma is one of the most common causes of chronic respiratory disease, and countries with low socioeconomic status have both a high prevalence of asthma and asthma-related death. Objective: In this study, we aimed to determine socioeconomic levels of asthmatic patients according to a national database and investigate the effects of social markers on disease control in our region. Methods: This is an analysis of data from 2053 adult asthma patients from a multicentre chart study in Turkey. Socioeconomic status (SES) data were collected from questionnaires and this form was sent to the patients via e-mail. Parameters related to social status and poor disease control were analyzed. Results: Illiteracy (OR:2.687 [95% CI: 1.235–5.848]; p = 0.013) and lower household income (OR:1,76 [95% CI: 1.002–3.09]; p = 0.049) were found as independent risk factors for hospitalization in the multivariate logistic regression analysis. Therewithal, being aged between 40 and 60 (OR: 1.435 [95% CI: 1.074–1.917]; p = 0.015), illiteracy (OR: 2.188 [95% CI: 1.262–3.795]; p = 0.005) and being employed (OR: 1.466 [95% CI: 1.085–1.847]; p = 0.011) were considered as independent risk factors for systemic corticosteroid use at least 3 days within last 1 year. Conclusion: As a result of our national database, education level, household income and working status briefly socioeconomic status have impacts on asthma control. Identification of social markers in asthma and better recognition of risk factors based on the population gives us clues to provide better asthma control in the future.

From Custody to Support: Exploring the Psychosocial Potentials of Female Correctional Officers in Turkey

    Çetintaş, Elif; Gökçearslan, Elif

This qualitative study examines the complex, contradictory, and multidimensional roles of female correctional officers (COs) in Turkish prisons through reflexive thematic analysis. Based on interviews with 40 female COs across 26 prisons, the findings show that officers often provide prison residents with informal psychosocial support to compensate for institutional gaps. However, the absence of clear role definitions, adequate training, and organizational support positions them as unprepared “de facto crisis managers” in cases of suicide attempts, self-harm, or withdrawal crises. The results highlight a persistent role conflict between care and control, shaped by gendered expectations, prison culture, and structural deficiencies.
