Social Assistance in The Context of The Concept of Infāq in Qurʾān

    Taştekin, Osman

The purpose of this study is to reveal the function of the concept of Infāq, which is included in the terminology of the Qurʾān itself, in social assistance and solidarity. Poverty has always been one of the social problems from past to present. Although it is analyzed dif-ferently in each society via different criteria, poverty generally refers to the condition in which a person lacks the basic necessities for a minimum living standard. Unfortunately, mil-lions of people starve for basic biological and social needs such as nutrition, shelter, educa-tion, health, and even water. This is a shame for the humanity. There are both international and national charities working to reduce the misery and poverty. However, due to socio-eco-nomic and structural problems such as globalization, disproportion in income distribution, unemployment, overpopulation, economic crises, lack of social security systems, and wars, poverty rises gradually and it is still one of the major social problems needed to be solved. Islam which is the last one of Abrahamic religions and its holy book Qurʾān consider social cooperation and solidarity pretty important within the context of Infāq and hold the believers responsible for the organization of social life. Infāq is an umbrella concept in the Qurʾān, re-ferring to all expenses and cooperation in the name of Allah and it is one of the main qualities of believers. Infāq, which includes other forms of cooperation such as obligatoryalms (zakāt) and charity (ṣadaqā), enables a person to share his tangible values with those who have worse life conditions than himself. In this way, the Quran aims to promote human relations and thereby enhancement and peace in the society. In other words, Infāq aims to eliminate social injustice which refers to social and economic inequalities, to protect the economically weak people against the difficulties in life, and thereby, to maintain economic and social stability. Helping the needy is a powerful path toward having spiritual peace, removing selfish feelings, and keeping emotional wellbeing. People with good mental health will be able to build more humane relationships with others. It is obvious that Infāq would play an important role in-building a sense of fellowship and trust. A wealth of person who shares his wealth with the poor will be deemed legitimate by the needy people. Thus, the needy people would be freed from negative feelings and behaviors such as jealousy, incapacity, hatred, bullying, and hos-tility, and feel a sense of fellowship and gratitude towards those who have better life condi-tions. One of the most important reasons for robbery, extortion, purse-snatching, and etc., which are currently occurring more frequently, is economic deprivation. Considering the fact that this kind of incidents takes place more frequently in poor countries than developed ones, it is obvious that Infāq has a strategic role in fulfilling the basic needs of the needy. Poverty might be linked to violence, which might end up with murder. Infāq which is divine coopera-tion approach would take an important role in fighting against criminal incidents that cause fear and indignation. Moreover, the Quran does not specify any certain economic condition to be able to do Infāq, and thereby, it makes people with various economic abilities become a part of the social cooperation. As everyone would take care of people who are relatively worse off, interindividual trust will be strengthen and circle of cooperation will be expanded. Ac-cording to the Qurʾān, people’s all goods and possessions actually belong to Allah. People are just the trustees of this wealth. Allah grants as much wealth as He wills to whomever He wills. While the rich is responsible for sharing their wealth with the needy, the poor is responsible for bearing the troubles caused by poverty with patience and endeavoring to make money in a halal way. Unless Infāq is done in order to please Allah, it does not have any significance in the presence of Allah. The reason why people have different material living conditions is that both the poor and the rich are subject to test. Thus, they would get rewards for hereafter besides the sustaining of social unity and solidarity. Allah is the only warrantor of the tangible and spiritual wealth gained in return for Infāq.

Dataset of the vascular e-Learning during the COVID-19 pandemic (EL-COVID) survey

Patelis, Nikolaos; Bisdas, Theodosios; Jing, Zaiping; Feng, Jiaxuan; Trenner, Matthias; Tri Nugroho, Nyityasmono; Reis, Paulo Eduardo Ocke; Elkouri, Stephane; Lecis, Alexandre; Karam, Lamisse

This dataset supports the findings of the vascular e-Learning during the COVID-19 pandemic survey (the EL-COVID survey). The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) of the European Union was taken into consideration in all steps of data handling. The survey was approved by the institutional ethics committee of the Primary Investigator and an online English survey consisting of 18 questions was developed ad-hoc. A bilingual English-Mandarin version of the questionnaire was developed according to the instructions of the Chinese Medical Association in order to be used in mainland People's Republic of China. Differences between the two questionnaires were minor and did affect the process of data collection. Both questionnaires were hosted online. The EL-COVID survey was advertised through major social media. All national and regional contributors contacted their respective colleagues through direct messaging on social media or by email. Eight national societies or groups supported the dissemination of the EL-COVID survey. The data provided demographics information of the EL-COVID participants and an insight on the level of difficulty in accessing or citing previously attended online activities and whether participants were keen on citing these activities in their Curricula Vitae. A categorization of additional comments made by the participants are also based on the data. The survey responses were filtered, anonymized and submitted to descriptive analysis of percentage.

The relationship between Turkish children’s respect for differences and their attitude toward refugee children

    Aydoğdu, Fatih; Gürsoy, Figen

This research was conducted to examine the relationship between Turkish children’s respect for differences and their attitude toward refugee children. Using the purposeful sampling method, the study focused on seventh grade Turkish children with at least one refugee in their class at the Ministry of National Education secondary schools in the city center of Erzincan. The evaluative measures used to assess the level of respect shared between students were a “Respect Worth for Differences Scale” and “Attitude Scale for Refugee Students” As a result of the research, it was determined that gender did not make a significant difference in the level of respect between children. However, the number of siblings a student had and the length of their education with refugees did make a significant difference. In addition, it was determined that categorization and valuation, which are the sub-dimensions of respect worth for differences predict a child’s attitude toward refugee children.

Gender-related clinical and management differences in patients with chronic heart failure with reduced ejection fraction

Kocabaş, Umut; Kıvrak, Tarık; Yılmaz Öztekin, Gülsüm Meral; Tanık, Veysel O.; Özdemir, İbrahim; Kaya, Ersin; Yüce, Elif İlkay; Avcı Demir, Fulya; Doğduş, Mustafa; Altınsoy, Meltem

Aim: Gender-related differences have been described in the clinical characteristics and management of patients with chronic heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). However, published data are conflictive in this regard. Methods: We investigated differences in clinical and management variables between male and female patients from the ATA study, a prospective, multicentre, observational study that included 1462 outpatients with chronic HFrEF between January and June 2019. Results: Study population was predominantly male (70.1%). In comparison to men, women with chronic HFrEF were older (66 ± 11 years vs 69 ± 12 years, P <.001), suffered more hospitalisations and presented more frequently with NYHA class III or IV symptoms. Ischaemic heart disease was more frequent in men, whereas anaemia, thyroid disease and depression were more frequent in women. No difference was seen between genders in the use rate of renin-angiotensin system inhibitors, beta-blockers, mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists, or ivabradine, or in the proportion of patients achieving target doses of these drugs. Regarding device therapies, men were more often treated with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) and women received more cardiac resynchronisation therapy. Conclusion: In summary, although management seemed to be equivalent between genders, women tended to present with more symptoms, require hospitalisation more frequently and have different comorbidities than men. These results highlight the importance of gender-related differences in HFrEF and call for further research to clarify the causes of these disparities. Gender-specific recommendations should be included in future guidelines in HFrEF.

Mortality from esophagectomy for esophageal cancer across low, middle, and high-income countries: An international cohort study

    Kamarajah, S.K.; Nepogodiev, D.; Bekele, A.; Cecconello, I.; Evans, R.P.T.; Guner, A.; Gossage, J.A.; Harustiak, T.; Hodson, J.; Isik, A.

Background: No evidence currently exists characterising global outcomes following major cancer surgery, including esophageal cancer. Therefore, this study aimed to characterise impact of high income countries (HIC) versus low and middle income countries (LMIC) on the outcomes following esophagectomy for esophageal cancer. Method: This international multi-center prospective study across 137 hospitals in 41 countries included patients who underwent an esophagectomy for esophageal cancer, with 90-day follow-up. The main explanatory variable was country income, defined according to the World Bank Data classification. The primary outcome was 90-day postoperative mortality, and secondary outcomes were composite leaks (anastomotic leak or conduit necrosis) and major complications (Clavien-Dindo Grade III - V). Multivariable generalized estimating equation models were used to produce adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI95%). Results: Between April 2018 to December 2018, 2247 patients were included. Patients from HIC were more significantly older, with higher ASA grade, and more advanced tumors. Patients from LMIC had almost three-fold increase in 90-day mortality, compared to HIC (9.4% vs 3.7%, p < 0.001). On adjusted analysis, LMIC were independently associated with higher 90-day mortality (OR: 2.31, CI95%: 1.17–4.55, p = 0.015). However, LMIC were not independently associated with higher rates of anastomotic leaks (OR: 1.06, CI95%: 0.57–1.99, p = 0.9) or major complications (OR: 0.85, CI95%: 0.54–1.32, p = 0.5), compared to HIC. Conclusion: Resections in LMIC were independently associated with higher 90-day postoperative mortality, likely reflecting a failure to rescue of these patients following esophagectomy, despite similar composite anastomotic leaks and major complication rates to HIC. These findings warrant further research, to identify potential issues and solutions to improve global outcomes following esophagectomy for cancer.

The Role of Islam in Decent Care for People with Stigmatized Diseases: An Evaluation via the Concept of Human Dignity

    Guldas, Fatumetul Zehra

Individuals’ rights and freedoms within the scope of human rights have been tried to be guaranteed by many international organizations and laws (Universal Declaration of Human Rights, WorldHealth Organization) with universal legal regulations. In addition to many norms of respect, suchas personal rights and freedom, justice, peace, and social equality, human dignity is at the forefront of an individual's own value as a human. Although these norms are considered to be applicable to all individuals through international legal regulations, it is often overlooked to identifyan approach under the qualification of human dignity when it comes to pandemic (such asHIV/AIDS) or other dangerous epidemics. With the increasing interest, many health-oriented approaches have been developed in recent years by taking into account human dignity, thanks tothe careful efforts of many health institutions, especially the World Health Organization. However, the contribution of religious attitudes to these approaches is lacking, especially in Muslim communities either because people do not have enough religious knowledge or have an unclear understanding of it. For this reason, in this study, a conceptual framework related to human dignitywas first evaluated in the context of human rights, then it was discussed in the context of Islamand it was explained how important human dignity is in both the Qur'an and the Hadith. And thenthe suggestions of the general quality of health services in the light of human dignity were given. Finally, the components that are based on human dignity and decent care are highlighted and itis discussed whether there is a compensatory function in the health sector of human dignity forfuture studies.Today, it is noted that the underlying reason for ignoring human dignity today is due to religiousexplanations and discourses rather than social perception and stereotyped thoughts or traditiontraditions. Whereas, as in other Abrahamic religions, Islam says that human dignity originates fromGod, and considers human as valuable only because it is human. That is, according to Islam, a humanbeing is a worthy being by birth. Given that, ignoring human dignity will lead to unavoidable consequences when it comes to vital loop since human dignity, which is a universal value, is a concept withtheological, sociological and psychological dimensions. In particular, decent care required for stigmatized individuals, such as people with HIV/AIDS, can lead to various psychological and sociologicalproblems, as human dignity is not taken into consideration. Likewise, showing offensive attitudesand behaviors towards this kind of pandemic disease will lead people who have such illnesses to losetheir respect for themselves and others, to be excluded and to withdraw socially. In Islam, manyverses and the hadith underline the protection and maintaining human health under all circumstances.Considering all these, this study examines the four basic components of human dignity according to Islam in order to develop new attitudes in healthcare. The first and most important ofthese is the right to live. Here, several human dignity norms such as respecting the individual andsocial rights of the person, ensuring personal safety, promoting freedom of belief system, etc. areincluded. These are supported by the verses and the hadiths in Islam, and actions such as murder, suicide, killing or maiming are explicitly prohibited. The second is the right of freedom, which meansthat people control their decision-making processes, are subject to their own actions and do nothing to endanger the freedom or safety of others. The third is the right to religiosity, which is acceptedas a natural right of human dignity. What is meant here is that no one has the right to force someone else to choose religion or to change religion, and at the same time they will not be judged fortheir right to religiousness. The fourth and last one is the right to equality social advantages in justice. In Islam, human dignity is based on the freedom of choice in every person's social life. Therefore,Islam brings fundamentally responsible and protective regulations to human dignity so that people can live in peace, security, and comfort. Moreover, elements such as the right to live, the right to freedom, the right to religiousnessand the right to equal justice offered by religion are within the scope of a belief system in whichpeople respect the dignity of all individuals and that each person has an unconditional value. These components have the potential to play an important role in developing innovative approaches and techniques that promote decent care in health services for individuals whosehealth status requires special treatment.

Seçimlerde Komşusundan Ayrıksılaşan İlçeler ve Ayrıksılaşmayı Sağlayan Dinamikler

Tuysuz, Suat; Gulmez, Recep; Mutlu, Kader

Politics of Space in The Context of The Right to the City and Gender: The Case of KYK Residences in Erzincan

Tuysuz, Suat; Gürel, Melek Eryentu; Gülmez, Recep

In Turkey termination of a mixed university student residence' policy was put into practice by the Ministry of Youth and Sports in 2013. This policy has created an actual situation that proposes the placement of male students in the residences that are close to the center, and the female students in the student residences in locations that can be considered deserted and remote for women in Erzincan. The sample of this study is composed of 459 people, including both male and female students, who live in all Higher Education Student Loan and Housing Board (HESLHB) residences in the city. The surveys conducted on the sample form the data of the research. The data were analyzed with independent sample t-test and ANOVA test The findings show that the policy on the termination of mixed residences, which may be referred to as the gendering of space, creates gender inequity. The results of the study show that the visibility of female students in public-urban areas has been limited in line with conservative and patriarchal policies which delimits their right to the city. However, it shows that this results in the fact that male students are pushed into a more financially disadvantaged position.

The Educational Inequalities in the Disadvantaged Social Strata of Romani Population

    Özbaş, Mehmet

The objective of this study is to determine the variables that create inequality for children from disadvantaged social strata in their process of compulsory education. The study was carried out in Erzincan, which is a significant city located in the eastern Anatolia region of Turkey, in 2017. Nearly, 117 parents from disadvantaged social strata participated in the study. Disadvantaged children face the most serious problems in education. Those families were poor and disadvantaged Romanies, so their children did not attend the school. The study reveals that the inhabitants of a disadvantaged social stratum of this study mostly come from the ethnic origin of Romanies. This study was designed in a descriptive research model and carried out with face-to-face interview method. The semi-structured interview form of “Educational Inequalities in Disadvantaged Social Strata” was used in this study. The semi-structured interview form has been developed for this study. The study also reveals that 76 percent of disadvantaged families are not able to receive any proper economic support from the state they needed for their children. The disadvantaged families claim that authorities have never told them the true meaning, significance, and functions of compulsory education. In addition, the study reveals that the biggest obstacles are having poorly educated parents and financial insecurity for disadvantaged families in terms of their social, economic, and individual growth. The study reveals that the lack of continuous cash transfers to the students of disadvantaged strata creates social injustice and inequality in compulsory education. It is highly recommended that continued economic support should be given for the students from disadvantaged families to meet their basic psychological and human needs.

THE EFFECTS OF ECONOMIC COMPLEXITY, EXPORT AND FIXED CAPITAL INVESTMENTS ON INCOME PER CAPITA: THE CASE OF G-20 COUNTRIES

Soyyigit, Semanur; Topuz, Huseyin; Özekicioglu, Halil

In today's world economy, where the composition of exports has gained importance rather than the size of export volumes of countries, how sophisticated products a country produces and exports indicates the complexity level of that country. In this study, the effects of economic complexity index, export and gross fixed capital formation variables on per capita income are analyzed for 18 countries in the G-20 community. The findings of the study reveals positive impact of economic complexity index on per capita income for Brazil, China, Germany, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, Turkey and the US while revealing negative impact for Argentina, Australia, Canada, Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom. Brazil is the only country differentiates from the other countries in the sense of having the increasing export share of primary products (raw materials and intermediate goods) while having decreasing export share of manufactured products and also in the sense of having positive significant relationship between the economic complexity level and per capita income.

Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the 4th-grade primary school students’ perceptions towards gender (in)equality based on children rights and to assess whether the perceptions differ by gender. Method: This study was conducted using a descriptive survey method. The study group, which were assigned using a convenience sampling strategy, comprised by.570 4th grade students, 264 of whom were girls and 306 were boys, from six districts of Ankara Province. The research data were obtained by a data collection tool that was developed by the researchers drawing on the books, namely The Declaration of Girls' Rights and The Declaration of Boys' Rights by Élizabeth Brami and Estelle Billion-Spagnol, which were written for children. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage and Chi-square test. Findings: Overall results of this study suggested that the primary school fourth-grade students failed to consider professions, plays, toys, colors, daily life skills, academic, artistic, and sportive activities based on "rights", that they had explicit stereotypical approaches, and that girls had more equalitarian perception than boys regarding gender roles. Implications for Further Research and Practice: Efforts should be made to eliminate all kinds of sexist items and practices from the content and functioning of the education (e.g. programs, books, teacher behaviors, spaces, activities). Steps should be taken to increase the awareness of families and society in general about gender equality.
