Taskesen, Orhan; Kanat, Sevtap; Cigir, Ebru; Gor, Tuba Kinay; Ilhan, AC
Hopelessness can be defined as negative expectations for the future. In other words, it is the level of pessimism for future (Yenilmez, 2010: 307). One of the most important reasons for the failure at school (Yenilmez, 2010: 1), hopelessness causes many mental health problems as well. In particular, it is among the main reasons of suicide, which has been shown as a public health issue throughout the history. In our country, suicide's being dense especially between the ages of 15-24 and 25-34 (Ucan, 2005: 19) led the different disciplines to perform some research on the subject. The fact that participation in artistic activities is effective for socialization of the person, dismissing stress, expressing himself gave birth to the idea that studying the effect of need of receiving art education informally on the level of hopelessness is important for future findings. This study was conducted to determine the status of receiving informally art education needs of high school students, to determine whether there is a significant relationship between the levels of hopelessness and needs of receiving art education informally, and to detect whether their levels of hopelessness contain significant differences according to the needs of receiving art education informally. This study, conducted through relational scanning method, was carried out with high school students in a medium-sized city in eastern Turkey. The study population is composed of 6883 students attending general high school in the academic year 2011-2012. The study group is composed of 115 girls and 65 boys a total of 182 students attending general high school in the academic year 2011-2012. In order to measure the students' need of receiving art education informally, Need of Receiving Art Education Informally Scale, developed by the researcher Taskesen, was used and in order to measure the levels of hopelessness, Beck Hopelessness Scale developed by Beck, Lester, Trexter (1974) and adapted to Turkey by Seber (1991), Durak (1993). For The data analysis, to compare the scores of the dependent variable of the sample, one-way ANOVA was used, which is one of the parametric tests. Personn correlation coefficient was used to determine the relationships between two variables. At the end of the ANOVA test, there was no significant difference in highs school students' level of hopelessness and also despite the negative correlation between the scores of receiving art education informally and level of hopelessness, there was significant association. Ucar, Sedat; Sanalan, Vehbi Aytekin
Reforms are typically criticized for failing to bridge the gap between practitioners and researchers and for the lack of research support provided prior to implementation. Research has indicated that preservice teachers' understandings of high-quality science teaching are formed by teacher training programs. The purposes of this study are to investigate views about science in preservice teachers in old and new teacher training programs and to determine whether and how these two programs shape teacher trainees' views of science. A total of 459 students from a 4-year elementary science teacher training program participated in the study. A 41-item instrument was used to collect data. Four factors were extracted from the data, explaining 41.58% of the variance, and the reliability was found to be .86. There were significant differences for both males and females between the old and new programs. However, no difference was found between males' and females' total scores. In addition, students from the two programs had significantly different scores on the sub-scales of "Anxiety" and "Uncertainty". For example, males in the new program had significantly higher scores on the "Anxiety" and "Uncertainty" sub-scales. The overall increase in science course hours and decrease in science method course hours in the new program may account for these findings.
RDL Kalıcı Kaydıİncele - ArticleYalnız künye2011The practicality of implementing connected classroom technology in secondary mathematics and science classrooms
Shirley, Melissa L.; Irving, Karen E.; Sanalan, Vehbi A.; Pape, Stephen J.; Owens, Douglas T.
Connected classroom technology (CCT) is a member of a broad class of interactive assessment devices that facilitate communication between students and teachers and allow for the rapid aggregation and display of student learning data. Technology innovations such as CCT have been demonstrated to positively impact student achievement when integrated into a variety of classroom contexts. However, teachers are unlikely to implement a new instructional practice unless they perceive the practical value of the reform. Practicality consists of three constructs: congruence with teacher's values and practice; instrumentality-compatibility with the existing school structures; and cost/benefits-whether the reward is worth the effort. This study uses practicality as a framework for understanding CCT implementation in secondary classrooms. The experiences of three science teachers in their first year implementing CCT are compared with matched-pair mathematics teachers. Findings suggest that despite some differences in specific uses and purposes for CCT, the integration of CCT into regular classroom practice is quite similar in mathematics and science classrooms. These findings highlight important considerations for the implementation of educational technology.

This study aims to determine the views of NOS of pre-service elementary teachers who are in the position of students. Also, it will be analyzed whether the pre-service student teachers' views on NOS will change thanks to education in their faculties. That is, analyzing the elementary teachers' views on NOS according to their academic level; it will be investigated whether there is any statistically significant difference. The study consists of 263 students of different academic levels who attended the department of elementary teaching in the education faculty of Bayburt in the 2008-2009 academic years. At the end of the study, it can be said that the faculties of education fulfill the post they take on. However it has been determined that the candidates do not have contemporary views on nature of science, but positive views. The faculties of education makes students acquire a view of the nature of science but cannot make them have a contemporary view of the nature of science. This results from the fact that teacher candidates cannot develop their views on the nature of science in their educational life before they come to education faculty. For this reason it is necessary that the students at every level develop their view on the nature of science. In this way, for the candidates acquiring the viewpoint of the nature of science will become easier.

The term "scientific literacy" has become a dominant educational slogan and a major goal for science education in many countries over the past two decades. Although a scientifically literate society is an ultimate goal of science education in Turkey, as well as in other countries, there is not much information on scientific literacy levels even for people who deal with science first-hand. Whether people who deal with science, such as scientists and science teachers, have adequate levels of scientific literacy is still open to investigation. This study aimed to examine scientific literacy levels of pre-service science teachers at different grade levels (different class, eg., first year Science Teacher Training Departments' students). One of the aims of this study is investigating effectuality of the education faculties about developing scientific literacy. The study examined whether there is a statistically meaningful difference among science literacy levels of pre-service science teachers at different grade levels. The data obtained from the study contributed to determine at what levels scientific literacy of pre-service teachers were. Furthermore, it provided to be observed how the education in the Faculty of Education had affected scientific literacy levels of pre-service teachers as well. So, it is thought to make contribution to understanding how Education Faculties could perform the mission for which they are responsible in providing these students as teachers of the future with scientific literacy being one of the features a good teacher needs to have.
