The serial mediating role of perceived injustice and perceived victimization in the effect of perceived organizational barriers on organizational cynicism among healthcare workers

    Tarsuslu, Sinan; Agaoglu, Ferhat Onur

This study examined how perceived injustice and victimization shape healthcare workers' cynical attitudes toward organizational barriers. A cross-sectional design was adopted in this study, and the serial mediation role of perceived injustice and victimization was examined. Based on a quantitative data collection method, this study is also a descriptive-relationship-seeking type. In order to fulfill the objectives of the study, scales with proven validity and reliability in the literature were used. The study sample consists of doctors, nurses, medical secretaries, auxiliary health personnel, and administrative staff working in a small-scale public hospital in the Eastern Anatolia Region of Turkey. A simple random sampling method was preferred in sample selection. When the research findings were evaluated, positive and significant relationships were found between the organizational barriers perceived by healthcare professionals and perceived injustice, victimization, and organizational cynicism behaviors. The results revealed that both perceived injustice and perceived victimization separately mediated the effect of perceived organizational barriers on organizational cynicism, and that these two variables also played a serial mediating role. Accordingly, it was demonstrated that feelings of injustice and victimization experienced in organizational processes increase healthcare workers’ organizational cynicism.

The Impact of Tourism Activities on Carbon Emissions: Evidence Using a Time-Varying Parameter Vector Autoregression Model

Catik, A. Nazif; Balli, Esra; Akdeniz, Coskun; Cobanoglu, Cihan; Helmi, Mohamad Husam

This article examines the impact of tourism activities, economic growth, and energy demand on environmental degradation in Turkey using Primiceri's (2005) time-varying parameter structural vector autoregression model for the period 1991:Q1 to 2020:Q1. The findings from the linear VAR model indicate that the response of carbon emissions to shocks in tourism activity is negative and significant. However, the time-varying responses show that the impact of tourism activities on environmental degradation varies over time but is not significant for most analysis period. The insignificant impact of tourism on carbon emissions implies that the tourism sector can be supported by policymakers without harming the environment. Furthermore, our findings on the positive and significant time- varying impact of tourism activities on economic growth support the validity of the tourism-led growth hypothesis.

The Impact of Agricultural Total Factor Productivity and Economic Growth on Environmental Quality: The Case of Agriculturally Successful Countries

    Dinçer, Selin; Akin, Fatih

Agricultural productivity supports the increase in agricultural production by ensuring the efficiency of resources used in the agricultural sector, such as water, soil, labour, and capital. In addition, environmental problems such as land expansion and deforestation can be prevented by using efficient agricultural techniques. However, when the literature is analyzed, it is seen that there is no consensus on the impact of agricultural productivity on environmental quality. On the other hand, it is very important to examine the impact of economic growth on the environment. The economic activities of countries that are in line with their growth and development targets affect environmental quality. In this direction, in this study, in the period 1990-2022, in 12 countries (China, USA, Russia, France, Germany, Canada, Australia, India, Brazil, Indonesia, Argentina, and T & uuml;rkiye) that are successful in agriculture, The impact of agricultural Total Factor Productivity (T-TFP) and economic growth on environmental quality is analyzed by the Augmented Mean Group (AMG) method and Dumitrescu & Hurlin causality analysis. The carbon emission variable is used to represent environmental quality. The findings show that an increase in T-TFP increases environmental quality in China, the USA, Russia, France, Canada, Indonesia, and Australia; that is, the Borlaug hypothesis is valid in these countries. In India, Brazil, Argentina, and T & uuml;rkiye, the increase in T-TFP decreases the environmental quality; that is, Jevons' Paradox is valid in these countries. Moreover, in the study, environmental quality decreases as economic growth increases in all countries except Germany. Renewable energy consumption increases environmental quality in China, the USA, Brazil, Australia, and T & uuml;rkiye. Dumitrescu & Hurlin's causality analysis findings show that there is a bidirectional causality relationship between T-TFP, carbon emissions, and renewable energy consumption. The findings reveal that T-TFP, economic growth, and renewable energy consumption are important in environmental quality.

The Environmental Phillips Curve hypothesis for Russia: The Relationship between the Levels of Environmental Pollution and Unemployment

    Akin, Fatih; Özgün, Fergul

The environmental Phillips curve hypothesis reveals a negative relationship between unemployment and environmental pollution. In this study, we examined whether the environmental Phillips curve hypothesis is valid for Russia. In the analysis covering the period 1992-2022, Fourier Augmented ARDL approach was applied. CO2 emissions, which are used as an environmental pollution indicator, are the dependent variable of the model. The independent variables are the unemployment rate, economic growth, total energy supply and urbanization rate. According to the results of the analysis, there is a negative relationship between the unemployment rate and environmental pollution in Russia. This result demonstrates that the environmental Phillips curve hypothesis is valid in Russia. Moreover, it was found that the increase in economic growth reduces environmental pollution. The effects of the total energy supply and urbanization on environmental pollution are positive. However, the effect of the urbanization rate on environmental pollution is statistically insignificant. Russia should harmonize its employment policies and environmental policies with each other. The share of renewable energy use and total energy supply should be increased, and green job policies should be established. By increasing employment opportunities in sectors that use environmentally friendly technologies, Russia can reduce environmental pollution without suffering high unemployment rates.

Analyzing the dynamic relationship between financial development, financial inclusion, and institutional quality in developing countries

    Cengiz, Orhan; Manga, Muge

This paper examines the effect of financial inclusion and institutional quality on financial development in MINT countries from 2004 to 2020. We composed the financial inclusion index using different sub-indicators through principal component analysis. We also included political stability in the model to measure institutional quality. The AMG results suggest that financial inclusion positively impacts financial development in all MINT countries, while political stability is not statistically significant. Additionally, the D-H causality results show a bidirectional causality linkage between financial development and financial inclusion, financial development and economic growth, and unidirectional relationships from financial development to political stability and total population. Overall, these findings highlight the importance of financial inclusion in promoting financial development in MINT countries.

The mediating role of person-job fit in the effect of emotional labour on organisational cynicism: a cross-sectional study on cabin crew members

Karakavuz, Harun; Doğan, Ümit; Ergün, Nalan

Cabin crew members engage in more emotional labour due to their job demands and physical and mental labour, including a demanding work pace, irregular working hours, and extensive interaction with passengers from different cultural backgrounds or dealing with aggressive passengers. This study aims to explore the relationship between emotional labour and organisational cynicism by focusing on the mediating effect of person-job fit. The research data were collected through a survey administered to 561 cabin crew members employed in a medium-sized airline registered in Türkiye. The results indicate that person-job fit has a partial mediating effect on the effect of all sub-dimensions of emotional labour, namely surface acting, deep acting, and naturally felt emotions on the sub-dimensions of organisational cynicism (except for a full mediating effect of naturally felt emotions on behavioural cynicism). Other findings obtained from the analyses are discussed in detail in the study. The study concludes that person-job fit is vital for cabin crew members. Therefore, the study suggests that the airlines should concentrate on recruitment processes and practices to increase cabin crew members’ person-job fit.

Status incongruence effects under conditions of task interdependence: Too close for comfort

Triana, María del Carmen; Garcia, M.Fernanda; Richard, Orlando; Yücel, İlhami; Ahmed, Rawia

There are five generations of employees in the workforce. Such a distribution of ages makes it more likely that employees will be in non-traditional situations where workers are not only older but have more work experience, organizational tenure, or education than their supervisors. These situations reflect status incongruence and defy traditional workplace norms. We find that status incongruence with one's supervisor is negatively associated with job satisfaction. There is an indirect effect between status incongruence and organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) which is transmitted through job satisfaction. The relationship between status incongruence and job satisfaction is more negative when task interdependence with one's supervisor is higher rather than lower. Similarly, the relationship between status incongruence and OCB is more negative when task interdependence with one's supervisor is higher rather than lower. Results suggest that task interdependence may exacerbate employee responses to status incongruence.

The Key to Stability is Love? The Mediating Role of Work-Family Conflict in the Impact of Job Stress on Work Alienation and the Moderating Effect of Affective Commitment

    Yücel, İlhami; Torun, Nida Bengisu

The main aim of this research is to examine the mediating role of work-family conflict and the moderating effect of affective commitment in the relationship of job stress and work alienation to work. For this purpose, surveys were applied to health workers in the field such as midwives, nurses, emergency medical technicians and doctors in public hospitals. The universe of the study was composed of 844 employees of a public hospital in Türkiye. Surveys were distributed to 680 employees selected through simple incidental sampling from the universe through human resources department representation, and 427 accurately filled surveys were returned. The analysis of the data obtained was carried out through SPSS 22 and Amos 22 programs. Analyses were conducted using PROCESS Macro, developed by Hayes (2013), to determine the conditionally indirect effects. The findings revealed that work-family conflict has a mediating role in the relationship between job stress and work alienation and that employees’ level of affective commitment has a moderating effect. Thanks to this study, it was concluded that there is a meaningful and positive relationship between work-family conflict and alienation from work and that affective commitment has a moderating effect in this relationship. In addition, employees with low affective commitment compared to employees with high affective commitment to the organization were found to be stronger in the positive relationship. Theoretical and application implications are discussed in relation to “social change theory” and “social gender roles theory”. As a result of the analysis, the majority of the participants were male (58.8%), married (57%), 28-40 age group (46.5%) and undergraduate (49.5%).

Exploring the role of voluntary business associations on borrowed institutionalism in regional development: insights from the case of Kayseri in Türkiye

Tuysuz, Suat; Varol, Cigdem; Çiçek, Ihsan

Institutional and cultural traditions, usually shaped by non-economic factors, help to reduce the transaction costs of firms, particularly the costs of knowledge transfer. This study attempts to explain the effects of non-economic factors over voluntary business associations (BAs) and highlight the concept of “borrowed institutionalism” to illustrate the constructive and destructive power of BAs in their use of their relationships with the political establishment for their members. In Türkiye, BAs are not only economic actors but are also embedded in social forms that contain secular or conservative characteristics. While, the structures of these associations that operate within various ideologies can contribute to the institutional setting, they can also hinder the economic potential of a region by developing love or hate relations with the respective political structures. This forms the basis of the concept of “borrowed institutionalism” introduced in this study. Kayseri, which is one of Türkiye’s successful production centers with its unique socio-political characteristics, and predominantly home to small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) appears to be a critical case to analyze the role of BAs. The findings from Kayseri case study support the idea that both secular and conservative forms of BAs can cyclically be constructive or destructive for their members and create borrowed institutionalism based on non-inclusive institutionalism.

Exploring the Nexus of Professional Commitment, Emotional Labor, and Self-Efficacy Among Community Pharmacists: Implications for Healthcare Delivery

    Özkaya, Yağmur; Özçelikay, Gülbin

Objectives: This study aimed to explore the relationship between emotional labor, professional commitment, and self-efficacy among community pharmacists. Specifically, this study examined how self-efficacy influences professional commitment and the mediating role of emotional labor strategies in this relationship. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional survey design was used to collect data from 396 community pharmacists. The study used a convenience sampling method and included standardized measures of emotional labor, professional commitment, and self-efficacy. Descriptive statistics were used to examine the levels of these variables among the participants. Multiple regression analyses were conducted to assess the interdependencies and mediating effects of emotional labor strategies. Results: General self-efficacy was positively correlated with emotional commitment (β=0.275, p<0.05) and continuance commitment (β=0.364, p<0.05), explaining 5% and 8% of their variances, respectively. A normative commitment was influenced by self-efficacy (β=0.464, p<0.05) and deep emotional labor (β=0.134, p<0.05), explaining 11% of its variance. Self-efficacy and deep emotional labor positively affected overall professional commitment (β=0.368, p<0.05), accounting for 15% of the variance. Conclusion: The results highlight the crucial role of self-efficacy in managing the emotional demands of the pharmacy profession and in fostering stronger professional commitment. Enhancing pharmacists’ self-efficacy and emotional management skills can improve their job satisfaction and commitment to the profession. These findings have clinical implications for the development of training interventions aimed at supporting pharmacists in coping with the emotional aspects of their work and improving their overall professional well-being.

Assessing the influence of green innovation and environmental policy stringency on CO2 emissions in BRICS

Çetinkaya, Ozlem Akguc; Çatik, Abdurrahman Nazif; Balli, Esra; Manga, Muge; Destek, Mehmet Akif

This article examines the effect of environmental policy stringency and green innovation on CO2 emissions in the BRICS nations, using annual data from 1990 to 2019 utilizing panel FMOLS and DOLS estimators and Method of Moments Quantile Regression (MMQR). To this end, we estimate an equation in which CO2 emissions are explained by GDP, trade openness, nonrenewable and renewable energy consumption, the environmental stringency index, and green innovation, as measured by the number of patent applications for environmentally related inventions. FMOLS and DOLS results reveal that GDP, nonrenewable energy consumption, and trade openness have a positive effect on environmental pollution, whereas improvements in renewable energy consumption and environmental regulations lead to a drop in CO2 emissions. However, green innovation does not have a significant effect on CO2 emissions. MMQR estimates demonstrate that the GDP has a positive effect on CO2 emissions across all quantiles, suggesting that a higher degree of economic growth is associated with higher emissions. Based on findings, empirical evidence suggests that BRICS countries should follow the policies encouraging the reduction of nonrenewable energy consumption in the region without harming the development of the economy. Besides, policymakers should promote renewable energy consumption and enhance investment in green innovation to achieve sustainable development and environmental quality.

Exploring the interplay of emotional labor, organizational identification and citizenship behavior: The moderating influence of Type A and B personalities among healthcare workers

    Şirin, Sabri M.; Yücel, İlhami

Purpose – The primary objective of this research is to examine the mediating role of emotional labor in the relationship between organizational identification and organizational citizenship behavior (OCB). Additionally, the study explores how personality traits – specifically Type A and Type B personalities – moderate the mediated relationship. The research aims to provide a deeper understanding of how emotional and psychological factors interact to influence employee behavior in healthcare settings, offering practical implications for improving organizational efficiency and employee engagement. Design/methodology/approach – This study was conducted using a quantitative research methodology. Data were collected through structured surveys from 433 healthcare professionals employed in hospitals and healthcare institutions. The scales used for data collection were validated and widely recognized in previous studies. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS, AMOS and SMART PLS software. Analytical techniques included confirmatory factor analysis, reliability testing, correlation analysis, mediation analysis and moderated mediation analysis. Furthermore, the PROCESS macro with bootstrap sampling was employed to analyze the moderation effects. This comprehensive approach ensured the robustness and validity of the findings. Findings – Organizational identification has a significant and positive impact on both organizational citizenship behavior and emotional labor. Emotional labor acts as a mediator between organizational identification and organizational citizenship behavior, demonstrating that the psychological effort to align emotional displays with organizational expectations strengthens employees’ citizenship behaviors. Individuals with Type A personalities, characterized by competitiveness and high achievement orientation, exhibit stronger engagement in emotional labor and higher citizenship behavior. Type B personality traits, associated with a more relaxed and less competitive demeanor, display a weaker mediation effect. These findings emphasize the dynamic interplay between organizational, emotional and individual factors in shaping employee behaviors. Originality/value – This study contributes novel insights to organizational behavior literature by integrating emotional labor and personality traits as key variables in understanding the relationship between organizational identification and citizenship behavior. Unlike prior studies, this research highlights the moderating influence of Type A and Type B personality traits in this mediated relationship. The findings provide actionable insights for organizations, particularly in the healthcare sector, to develop strategies for enhancing employee engagement, fostering emotional resilience and promoting organizational citizenship behaviors. This unique focus on personality traits as moderators offers practical applications for tailoring management interventions based on individual differences.

The Mediating Role of Self-Esteem in the Relationship Between Perceived Ethnic Discrimination and Continuance Commitment of Migrant Workers

Yücel, İlhami; Gomes, Daniel Roque; Ribeiro, Neuza; Özlok, Kasım Kağan

This study aims to examine the relationship between perceived ethnic discrimination by migrant workers (applicants for international protection) and continuance commitment, and to analyze whether this relationship is mediated by self-esteem. In addition, it aims to contribute to the literature on the organizational outcomes of perceived ethnic discrimination. This research was conducted through a questionnaire survey of 411 migrants who applied for international protection in Turkey. As a result of the study, perceived ethnic discrimination was found to be a predictor of continuance commitment and self-esteem. In addition, it was observed that self-esteem has a mediating role in the relationship between perceived ethnic discrimination and continuance commitment. The results offer important implications for organizations and organization managers on how migrant workers should be managed and which issues require specific attention. The application of the study on migrant workers and the examination of these variables provide important contributions and practical implications to the literature. In addition, this is a rare study that examines the mediator model with the variables specified in the model using social identity theory, which has not yet been widely covered in existing literature.

Agaoglu, Ferhat Onur; Bas, Murat; Tarsuslu, Sinan; Ekinci, Lokman Onur

Background: Increasing quality and efficiency in health services can directly relate to nurses’ innovative work behaviors. The happiness levels of nurses at the workplace can positively affect their innovative work behaviors and their willingness to make a positive difference in patient care. In this context, the study aims to examine the serial mediation role of these factors by associating the effect of nurse happiness on innovative work behaviors with transformational leadership and perception of artificial intelligence use. Methods: Nurses working in two medium-sized public hospitals in the Eastern Black Sea region of Turkey were selected as the study sample. Data were collected from 458 nurses by convenience sampling method. In this cross-sectional study, scales whose validity and reliability were supported by other studies were used. Results: When the findings of the study were evaluated, a significant positive relationship was found between nurses’ happiness and innovative work behavior. In addition, it was found that transformational leadership and perception of AI usage had a mediating role separately in the relationship between nurses’ happiness and innovative work behavior. Finally, when the research model was tested, it was also determined that transformational leadership and perception of AI use have a serial mediating role in the relationship between nurses’ happiness and innovative work behavior. Conclusions: This study revealed that nurse happiness has a significant and positive effect on innovative work behaviors, and transformational leadership and perception of artificial intelligence use have a serial mediating role in this relationship. Ultimately, this research offers some theoretical and practical implications for practitioners by emphasizing the strategic importance of transformational leadership practices and the integration of artificial intelligence technologies, as well as increasing the happiness levels of nurses to promote innovation in healthcare services.
