Exploring Migration Motivations from Developed to Developing Countries: A Study of American Emigrants to Developing Countries

    Akin, Mustafa Screfi

This paper explores the motivations and challenges faced by American emigrants by focusing the stories of 12 individuals who moved to developing countries. Through an in-depth analysis of social media videos produced by the CNBC Make It program and the migrants, the study provides firsthand insights into their decision-making processes and the factors influencing their choices. Our findings reveal that economic opportunities are not the primary driver of early decision-making. Instead, motivations for migration are deeply rooted in social and psychological aspects, such as detachment from home communities and personal growth and fulfillment. Economic considerations, including the ability to earn income from the U.S. (through online work, retirement, or passive income), become relevant for geographic arbitrage only after the decision to migrate has been made. Having an income from home country, combined with the lower cost of living in developing countries, enables Americans to achieve financial independence. Notably, tax benefits are a low priority, contrary to popular belief about tax avoidance as motivation. Therefore, migration from developed to developing countries is primarily a personal decision driven by a desire for change, adventure, creativity, and self-discovery.

THE MEDIATING ROLE OF KNOWLEDGE SHARING IN THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LEADER-MEMBER EXCHANGE AND WORK INTEGRATION

Bas, Murat; Ayaz, Moh. Qasim; Agin, Kaya

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explain the mediating effect of knowledge sharing (KS) between leader-member exchange (LMX) and work integration (WI) on healthcare workers. The study also examines the direct effects of LMX on WI among selected healthcare workers in T & uuml;rkiye. Methodology: The study targeted a sample of N = 295 to provide relevant information. The data were coland WI (Schaufeli et al., 2002). A purposive stratified sampling method was used since the participants were considered based on predefined criteria. The study used a 5-point Likert scale ranging from 1= strongly disagree to 5= strongly agree. SPSS 22.0 and AMOS 17.0 packages were used for data analysis and interpretation of statistical outputs. Results: The study revealed a significant positive relationship between variables. Goodness of fit values of the scales were also checked. First, the mediating variable (knowledge sharing) between LMX and WI was investigated. Second, the effect of LMX on WI was explored. Based on the findings, a significant positive Conclusion: According to the research results, significant relationships were found between LMX and WI, between LMX and KS, and between KS and WI. In addition, it was determined that knowledge sharing had a mediating role in the effect of LMX on WI, which was the main purpose of the research. According to the research results, high-quality LMX relationships enable employees to be more open to KS and to integrate more into their work. In this case, KS acts as a bridge that strengthens the link between LMX and WI. Employees find greater meaning in their work by sharing their knowledge, which in turn increases their commitment to it. As a result, leaders creating a culture that supports knowledge sharing can be seen as an effective way to increase work integration and improve organizational performance.

The Participation of G20 Countries in Global Value Chains and their Effects on Economic Complexity

    Soyyiǧit, Semanur; Elverdi, Sevgi

Today, it is almost impossible for countries to reach a higher level of growth and development just by maintaining their existing production and export structures. Therefore, there has been an increased interest recently in examining the concept of economic complexity in the literature. The foundational premise of these studies is that countries can achieve higher levels of development by producing and exporting more complex products. In this study examines how the integration of various G20 countries into the global value chain affects the economic complexity of these countries. Integration in the global value chain occurs in the form of backward and forward participation. In this context, the study establishes two separate models and explores how these connections affect economic complexity. According to the analysis, GVC participation has a positive effect on the level of economic complexity in China, Korea, Mexico and Türkiye. No significant effect was found in India, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia. In developed countries such as Germany, the US, Australia, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Japan and Canada the effects of GVC participation were negative. A statistically significant negative effect was also found in developed countries such as Argentina, Brazil, South Africa and Russia.

Unleashing power of financial technologies on mineral productivity in G-20 countries

Cevik, Nuket Kırcı; Cevik, Emrah I.; Destek, Mehmet Akif; Bugan, Mehmet Fatih; Manga, Müge

This study aims to investigate the effects of financial technologies (FinTech) on mineral productivity, used for the first time in an empirical analysis, for G-20 countries. In the process, the impacts of financial technology, population, economic growth, trade openness, human capital, and total factor productivity on mineral productivity are examined using panel regression and panel VAR procedure for the period from 2002 to 2019. Empirical research yielded evidence indicating that increasing factor productivity and finance technology drive an increase in mineral productivity. Nonetheless, there is an inverse relationship between trade openness and mineral productivity. Moreover, there is no statistically significant relationship between economic growth, population growth, human capital accumulation, and mineral productivity. Furthermore, we also utilized with method of moments quantile regression technique to observe the effects of explanatory variables on different quantiles of mineral productivity. The findings demonstrate that although economic growth has a negative effect on mineral productivity across all quantiles, a positive increase in factor productivity has an influence on mineral productivity across all quantiles. However, financial technology and human capital accumulation only benefit mineral productivity at huge quantiles. Additionally, the outcomes of the robustness check techniques used show that financial technologies and mineral productivity have a bidirectional causal link and that, in the former instance of positive shocks in the latter, there are positive and substantial reactions.

Foreign investments and load capacity factor in BRICS: the moderating role of environmental policy stringency

Yıldırım, Metin; Destek, Mehmet Akif; Manga, Müge

This research examines whether environmental regulations have a moderating effect on the link between foreign direct investment and the environment, as well as the effect of foreign capital investments on environmental quality for BRICS nations. In this approach, using second-generation panel data methodologies for the period 1992–2020, the impacts of foreign direct investments, real national income, consumption of renewable energy, and environmental stringency index on the load capacity factor are explored in the base empirical model. In order to test if there is any evidence of a potential parabolic link between economic growth and environmental quality, the model also includes the square of real national income. In addition, in the robustness model, the moderating role of environmental policy on foreign investment and environmental quality is checked. Empirical results show a U-shaped association between environmental quality and economic development. The usage of renewable energy and the environmental stringency index is also shown to improve environmental quality, although foreign direct investments decrease it. Finally, it is determined that environmental regulations are effective in undoing the negative impacts of foreign capital investments on environmental quality, demonstrating the validity of their moderating function.

Digital Capitalism and Child Labor Exploitation on YouTube

    Bakioğlu, Akın

This article examines the issue of child labor exploitation on YouTube through the phenomenon of “kidfluencers” - children who create video content and gain a large following on the platform. It discusses kidfluencing within the framework of digital capitalism and platform capitalism, where companies monetize users' data. While kidfluencing can allow children to be creative and gain income, it also risks exploiting their labor and compromising their privacy and well-being. The article analyzes several popular kidfluencer YouTube channels and finds that some children are producing content in a way that resembles intense work. It highlights how digital capitalism leads to the commodification and alienation of digital labor. While kidfluencers benefit platforms and brands through promotion, they may not receive fair compensation for their efforts. The involvement of parents also raises issues about children's autonomy and protection. Overall, the article argues that while kidfluencing seems like casual play, in some cases it amounts to a hidden form of child labor that fails to uphold children's rights. It calls for stronger regulations to ensure kidfluencers are not subject to exploitation of their immaterial labor.

High-income developing countries as pollution havens: Can financial development and environmental regulations make a difference?

Destek, Mehmet Akif; Yıldırım, Metin; Manga, Müge

The argument that foreign direct investments inflows in developing countries harm the environmental quality of these countries is evaluated within the scope of Pollution Haven Hypothesis. However, the Pollution Halo Hypothesis, the counterargument, contends that foreign investment has several positive effects on the environmental circumstances in the host nation. Therefore, firstly the unit root properties of variables and cointegration existence among variables are checked with newly developed panel data techniques that both allows cross-sectional dependence and structural breaks. In addition, using recently established CS-ARDL technique for high-income developing nations (BRICS-T), this research examines the effects of foreign direct investment on the environment as well as whether environmental regulations and financial development have changed the potential haven hypothesis into the halo hypothesis for the period from 1995 to 2020. The pollution haven theory holds true for these nations, according to the results of empirical research. On the other side, it is determined that tighter environmental restrictions support the environmental quality, and the usage of renewable energy also improves environmental quality, even if economic growth harms environmental quality. In addition, it is found that both regulations and financial development has a moderating role on reversing the haven to halo.

Does economic globalization trigger de-industrialization in Western Balkan countries? Empirical evidence based on augmented mean group estimator

    Cengiz, Orhan; Manga, Müge

Integration into the global economy can cause shifts in industries and decrease the industrial sector's share. Deindustrialization, which refers to declining industry share, is commonly observed in developed countries. However, many developing countries have also experienced deindustrialization without attaining a high economic level in the era of globalization. Since transitioning to a market economy and integrating with the European Union (EU), deindustrialization has become a significant issue for Western Balkan countries. Thus, our paper analyzes the impact of economic globalization on the deindustrialization process in five Western Balkan countries: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia by using panel data spanning 2000–2019. Our study involved the creation of two models utilizing the augmented mean group (AMG) estimation method to ensure precise results. Our research shows that in model I, the economic globalization index, economic growth, capital investment, and the rule of law positively impact industry employment share. In model II, trade openness and economic growth positively affect manufacturing value-added; however, capital investment and the rule of law have a negative impact. Our findings indicate that economic globalization promotes industrialization in the Western Balkans instead of leading to deindustrialization. The panel causality results from Dumitrescu–Hurlin indicate that in model I, there is a one-way causal relationship going from economic globalization and capital investment to the share of industry employment. In model II, the causal relationship goes from economic growth and the rule of law to manufacturing value-added, from manufacturing value-added to trade openness and capital investment.

The Influence of Financial Development on Wealth Inequality in Capitalism: Fresh Evidence From Emerging Countries

    Cengiz, Orhan; Manga, Müge

Our study focuses on how financial development (FD) affects wealth inequality (WI) in ten emerging countries from 1995 to 2020. These countries include Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, the Philippines, South Africa, Thailand, and Türkiye. We analyzed the impact of economic growth (EG) and trade openness (TO) on WI using the augmented mean group (AMG) estimator. Our research showed that FD leads to an increase in WI among panel groups, particularly in Brazil, China, Mexico, and the Philippines. Additionally, EG and TO have a positive effect on WI for panel samples. We also found a two-way causality relationship between FD and WI, EG and WI, and WI and TO. Our paper concludes with a policy recommendation that government intervention is crucial in ensuring that lower-income individuals have equal access to financial assets.

Effect of Presenteeism on Job Performance Levels in Turkey: Role of Organisational Attraction

    Kılıçkaya, Fatma Yılmaz

This study investigates how presenteeism (PRES) influences job performance (JP), with a specific focus on how organisational attractiveness (OA) moderates this relationship. Con-ducted with 500 employees from a Turkish call centre in the communication sector, situated in Erzincan province, findings reveal that PRES adversely impacts JP. However, OA acts as a significant buffer, diminishing PRES's negative effects. Notably, when employees’ OA perceptions are high, PRES has less of a negative impact on their JP. This research enhances understanding of the interplay between PRES, JP, and OA, providing practical insights for organisational management.

Melatonin hormone level in nurses and factors affecting it; Investigation according to shift working pattern

Şentürk, Esra; Üstündağ, Hilal; Demir Gökmen, Burcu

This study aimed to determine the relationship between melatonin hormone levels, sleep, and factors affecting sleep, psychological resilience, and depression in nurses working with a shift work system. Conducted between February 5–12, 2021, at the Training and Research Hospital in Ağrı province, the descriptive study included 41 night shift nurses and 35 day shift nurses, totaling 76 participants. Blood samples for melatonin analysis were collected and data were gathered using the Sociodemographic Information Form, Epworth Sleepiness Scale, Sleep Disorder Scale Short Form, Brief Psychological Resilience Scale, and Beck Depression Scale Short Form. Melatonin analysis was performed using the ELISA method. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Results showed that sleep disorders were present in all nurses with <7 h of daily sleep. Factors such as the use of sleeping pills, marital status, age, and gender affected sleep disorders. Mean scores for melatonin levels were 67.82 ± 40.20 for night shift nurses and 68.08 ± 39.62 for day shift nurses, with no significant difference between shifts. Similarly, no significant differences were found in daytime sleepiness (7.49 ± 4.47 vs. 7.51 ± 4.65), sleep disturbance (24.71 ± 7.33 vs. 25.23 ± 6.64), psychological resilience (18.42 ± 4.19 vs. 17.89 ± 4.74), or depression (3.22 ± 2.60 vs. 3.49 ± 3.35). Nurses exhibited mild sleep disturbances, low depression tendencies, and moderate psychological resilience. Increased daytime sleepiness and sleep disorders correlated with higher depression tendencies and lower psychological resilience. Hospital management and education units are recommended to conduct interventions on sleep quality, depression, and psychological resilience to raise awareness among nurses.

Can digital government reduce the resource dependency? Evidence from method of moments quantile technique

Destek, Mehmet Akif; Hossain, Mohammad Razib; Manga, Müge; Destek, Gamze

The conventional thinking states that pervasive government corruption may turn resource plenty in resource-rich countries into a burden. These issues may surface, particularly when the public sector uses conventional procedures. Based on this, the research looks at how the public sector's digitalization might aid in resolving this issue. Specifically, economic growth, trade openness, economic complexity index, public sector size, and the impacts of digitalization are assessed in relation to their reliance on natural resources for 16 nations that are vulnerable to the “curse of the natural resource” Furthermore, the moderating influence of digitalization on the link between the growth of the public sector and the resource curse is investigated. In this case, the years 1995–2021 are investigated using the CS–ARDL methodology, and the robustness of the results is evaluated using the Moments Quantile Regression method. The CS-ARDL approach's findings indicate that trade openness, public sector size, and economic progress all correlate with increased resource reliance. However, as the economy becomes more complex and digitalized, resource dependency declines. Additionally, it is demonstrated that the interaction term parameter between digitalization and the growth of the public sector is negative, indicating that digitalization within the public sector has the potential to counteract the growing reliance of the sector on resources.

Pazarlarda her türlü satışlar görülür. Her sabah birçok evde üzerlik tütsüsü yapılır.
