Reasons Behind the Migration of Highly Qualified Employees from Turkiye: The Case of Software Developers and Engineers

    Akin, Mustafa Seref; Karadas, Ebubekir

The emigration of highly skilled software developers and engineers from Turkey has gained momentum, leading to a shortage of technical staff in technology companies, particularly startups. In order to understand their motivations for migrating, interviews were conducted with software developers and engineers. The findings reveal that highly skilled individuals perceive their labor as undervalued in Turkey, both economically and in terms of social status. The international nature of the software industry makes it relatively easy for them to migrate to other countries or work for foreign companies remotely. They express that companies in their destination countries respect their work, private lives, and individuality. To address this issue, Turkish companies can consider measures such as assisting key employees in purchasing houses and cars, as well as supporting their families' education and healthcare expenses, to ensure long-term loyalty. Furthermore, it is suggested that salaries for software developers should be adjusted to be more comparable to those abroad in terms of purchasing power. Failure to provide sufficient incentives may result in software exports falling short of expectations amidst this wave of migration.

INVESTIGATION OF THE EFFECT OvoOFje WORKING CAPITAL MANAGEMENT ON PROFITABILITY BY PANEL DATA 5 6 ANALYSIS AND MULTI-CRITERIA DECISION MAKING TECHNIQUES

Korkmaz, Ersin; Karabulut, Turgut; Güner, Mehmet

Purpose: The aim of this study is to reveal and compare the effect of working capital management on return on assets with different analysis methods, based on the annual financial statement data of companies in the tourism sector traded in Borsa Istanbul (BIST) in the period 2012-2020. This study aimed to reveal the drawbacks of including in the model variables that are not an element of working capital management.Methodology: Panel data analysis, the analytical hierarchy process and the fuzzy analytical hierarchy process were used to reveal the effect of working capital management variables on return on assets based on the financial statement data of the companies. Results: As a result of the analysis, a significant relationship was identified between the rankings made by using the realized return on assets ratios and the rankings obtained by AHP and FAHP, while no significant relationship was found between the rankings obtained by panel data analysis. Conclusion: Including some variables in the model as a working capital management variable in panel data analysis may cause misinterpretation of the effects of real working capital variables on return on assets. When the model that emerged according to the AHP and FAHP methods was examined, the asset turnover rate and financial leverage ratio variables were determined as the ratios with the lowest effect on return on assets, as the elements of working capital management in the weighting made according to the opinions of the experts.

How does Workplace Ostracism Affect Employee Performance? Mediating Role of Psychological Resilience, Moderated Mediation Role of Cyberloafing

    Bas, Murat; Sirin, M. Sabri

Background and Purpose: Workplace ostracism is the situation in which the employee is rejected and ignored by the employees in the same workplace. Since this is a situation that prevents the success of the employees, it affects the performance of the employee. In this respect we assume that it is an important mediator in terms of experiencing psychological resilience in this relationship. In our research model, we also suggested that cyberloafing will affect the severity of the relationship between workplace ostracism and resilience. Therefore, we suggested that psychological resilience would have a mediator role and cyberloafing would have a moderating role in the relationship between workplace ostracism and employee performance, based on the opinions of employees.Design/Methodology/Approach: Data were obtained from 482 employees of Erzincan Municipality by utilizing the survey method. The obtained data were analyzed by using structural equation modeling to test our hypotheses. Results: It was found that there is a significant and positive correlation between workplace ostracism and psychological resilience, a significant and positive correlation between psychological resilience and employee performance, and a significant and negative correlation between workplace ostracism and employee performance. In addition, it was determined that workplace ostracism has an indirect effect on employee performance through psychological resilience, and cyberloafing has a moderating role in this indirect relationship. Conclusion: Our results showed the importance of the mediator role of psychological resilience and the moderator role of cyberloafing in the relationship between perceived workplace ostracism and employee performance.

The role of social manufacturing for entrepreneurship in the industry 4.0 transformation

    Aka, Salih

Social manufacturing is an internet-and social network-based platform where different manufacturers' capabilities can be seen and manufacturers with similar skills and hardware levels can come together to form communities. In the horizontal community, manufacturers who have similar socialised manufacturing resources and can perform the same processing activities are brought together. In the vertical community, there are manufacturers who can take part in different production activities of a product, from raw material to final product, and combine their socialised resources in this direction. Social manufacturing allows the bargaining power of the main producer to decrease thanks to the communities it establishes. The social manufacturing platform is a virtual showcase for small-scale entrepreneurs to present their talents, an effective cost management mechanism for customers, and an interaction, coordination, and sharing tool that will maximise production efficiency for countries.

The relationship between FDI, CO2 emissions, and energy consumption in Asia-Pacific economic cooperation countries

Balli, Esra; Sigeze, Ciler; Ugur, Mehmet Sedat; Çatık, Abdurrahman Nazif

This paper investigates the relationship between CO2 emissions, energy consumption, economic growth, and foreign direct investment for a sample of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Countries (APEC) countries from 1981:Q1 to 2021:Q1 employing panel data methodology. We identify cross-sectional dependence and hence utilize the cross-sectional augmented Dickey-Fuller panel unit root test for appropriate estimation. The cointegration test developed by Westerlund (2008) reveals a long-run equilibrium between CO2 emissions, energy consumption, economic growth, and foreign direct investment. Long-run parameter estimates based on Common Correlated Effect Mean Group indicate that an increase in FDI inflows has a negative impact on air quality, supporting the pollution haven hypothesis. The cointegration test results also show that the impact of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on CO2 emissions varies by country in the estimation sample. In contrast to the mixed evidence on the effects of other variables, the increase in energy consumption is positively and significantly affecting CO2 emissions in all APEC countries. Emirmahmutoglu and Kose Econ Model 28:870-876, (2011)’s panel causality test results show a bidirectional relationship between FDI and CO2 emissions in Japan. Furthermore, there is a bidirectional causal relationship between GDP and energy consumption in Australia, China, Japan, and Singapore. Overall, empirical evidence suggests that APEC countries should adhere to strict regulations and invest in environmental-friendly clean technologies to attract foreign direct investment.

The mediating effect of work engagement on the relationship between work–family conflict and turnover intention and moderated mediating role of supervisor support during global pandemic

Yucel, Ilhami; Şirin, Muhammed Sabri; Baş, Murat

Purpose: This paper aims to investigate whether there is a relationship between work–family conflict and turnover intention and whether work engagement has a mediating effect and supervisor support has a moderated mediation effect in this relationship. Design/methodology/approach: The sample of the study is composed of public hospital employees in Erzincan province. After removing the missing and incorrect ones from the questionnaires distributed to 1,044 employees of the hospital, 350 were evaluated. The data of the survey were analyzed and interpreted with statistical package programs. Regression analysis is used to investigate the association between the variables. Findings: This paper finds significant negative associations of work–family conflict with work engagement and work engagement with turnover intention. A significant positive association is found between work–family conflict and turnover intention. In the meantime work engagement has a partial mediating effect on this relationship. Another important result of the research is that supervisor support has a moderator role between work–family conflict and work engagement and has a moderated mediation role at the model in which work–family conflict is independent, turnover intention is dependent and work engagement is a mediator variable. Research limitations/implications: The research was conducted only in Erzincan province with a limited number of participants, and only health sector employees were examined. It is possible to obtain distinct results in future research studies conducted on different sector employees. Moreover, only the work–family conflict variable was examined in the research. It is possible to expand the scope by also including the family–work conflict variable in future studies. Originality/value: This research is the first study examining the mediating role of work engagement in the relationship between work–family conflict and turnover intention on healthcare employees in Turkey. Also, this paper is the first attempt to investigate moderated mediation model with the specified variables (work–family conflict, turnover intention, work engagement and supervisor support) in the model by using the frameworks of leader–member exchange and social exchange theories. This research answers research calls to study the moderating function of supervisor support during mediating role of work engagement, since the moderation impact clarifies the circumstances under which supervisor support is connected with the favorable results. This study also revealed how effective the supervisor support is on employees experiencing work–family conflict and their attitudes like work engagement and turnover intention. The consequences of such studies influence the way organizations handle and solve the problems in their organizations today. It takes into account moderated mediation modeling with the management subject in hospital employees.

Examination of the Relationships Between Change Fatigue and Perceived Organizational Culture, Burnout, Turnover Intention, and Organizational Commitment in Nurses

    Sarıgül, Seval Selvi; Uğurluoğlu, Özgür

Background and Purpose: This study aims to reveal the relationships between change fatigue and perceived organizational culture, burnout, organizational commitment, and turnover intention; to examine the effects of change fatigue on burnout, turnover intention, and organizational commitment; to determine whether there is any mediator effect of burnout on the relation between change fatigue, organizational commitment, and turnover intention or not; and finally, to determine the effects of organization culture on change fatigue. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 403 nurses working in a university hospital in Erzincan, Türkiye. Multiple and hierarchical regression analyses were used to determine the relationships between change fatigue, organizational culture, burnout, turnover intention, and organizational commitment. Results: As a result of the analysis, it was determined that change fatigue has a significantly positive effect on burnout and turnover intention and a negative effect on organizational commitment. In addition, it was revealed that burnout has a partial mediating effect on the relationship between change fatigue, turnover intention, and organizational commitment. Moreover, it was found that clan and adhoc-racy cultures, which are perceived organizational culture types, have a negative effect on change fatigue, and a hierarchical culture has a significantly positive effect. Implications for Practice: To prevent change fatigue, managers of health institutions can be advised to inform nurses about the process before each change initiative. In addition, creating a culture in the organization that adopts respect and understanding as a philosophy, is based on employee participation, and exhibits modern leadership behaviors.

What do expectations change? Optimistic expectations, job crafting, job satisfaction and a new theoretical model

    Yeşilkaya, Mukaddes; Yıldız, Tayfun

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of optimistic expectations on job satisfaction at work and whether job crafting behaviour plays a mediating role in this effect. At the same time, this model presents the need for “expectation management” in the context of work psychology to the attention of all academics and practitioners. Design/methodology/approach: To test the hypotheses of the study, data were obtained from 475 health-care workers in a public hospital. Hypotheses were tested using Process Macro Model of Hayes (2018). Findings: The result of the analyses determined that the optimistic expectations for the organization as a whole have a positive effect on job satisfaction, both directly and indirectly, and that job crafting behaviour has a partial mediating role in this effect. Research limitations/implications: The first limitation is that the data were obtained only by a cross-sectional method. The second is that among the various workplace behaviours and workplace psychologies job crafting and job satisfaction were examined in the study. The partial mediation effect between the research variables reveals the existence of many other variables and constitutes the third limitation. The fourth is that only optimistic expectations effects on positive behaviours and positive psychological states were evaluated in this study. Finally, a fifth limitation of this study is that the sample is limited to those working in the health sector and public hospitals. Practical implications: First, the data were obtained only by a cross-sectional method, and the longitudinal method was not implemented in how the study was designed. Second, among the workplace behaviours, only job crafting behaviour and only job satisfaction as a workplace psychology were analysed. Third, partial mediation effect was found to be among the other variables might indicate the role of additional variables that could be uncovered by further research. Fourth, only optimistic expectations and their effects on positive behaviours and positive psychological states at the workplace were evaluated. Fifth, the sample is limited to those working in the health sector and public hospitals. Social implications: This study draws attention to “Expectation Management” as a management activity worth exploring and its potential in terms of social and working relations. Originality/value: This study provides versatile answers to the question of why individuals perform differently despite working under the same conditions. The model suggested in the study takes the conventional way of thinking in the literature one step further by offering an alternative answer to this critical question, whose answers we have been discovering step by step since the Hawthorne studies. In addition, the proposed model draws attention to the need for “expectation management” in the context of business psychology in theory and practice.

Objectives: Workplace violence is a major issue in society, business and healthcare settings. It adversely affects both employee safety and their ability to provide healthcare services. Aim: This study examined the association between workplace violence, emotional exhaustion, job satisfaction and turnover intention among nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We collected data from 513 nurses. We conducted ‘Process Macro’ analysis. Firstly, we included three mediators in the model: job satisfaction, workplace violence and emotional exhaustion. Secondly, we used work hours and anxiety as moderators of the relationship between workplace violence and turnover intention. Results: The findings revealed statistical significance that job satisfaction and workplace violence mediated the relationship between emotional exhaustion and nurse turnover intentions. Work hours and anxiety also moderated the relationship between workplace violence and nurses’ turnover intention. Conclusion: Respondents indicated that they were most affected by verbal violence during this time. Workplace violence is a negative factor that affects nurses’ work, affecting them physically and psychologically. This occupational risk should be considered when evaluating nurses exposed to violence, as it affects job satisfaction and turnover intentions. The main theoretical contribution of this research is the identification of the association between workplace violence, emotional exhaustion, job satisfaction and turnover intention among nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is clear that the research findings will be useful for healthcare professionals. The findings may have practical implications for healthcare administrators and their staff.
