Emotional Labor in the Service Sector: The Role of Organizational Commitment

Uysal, Hasan Tezcan; Kiliçkaya, Fatma Yilmaz

This research examines the Organizational Commitment (OC) levels and emotional labor (levels) (EL) of employees in the service sector and to determine whether there is a significant relationship between these variables, to identify which dimensions of OC affect which dimensions of EL if there is a significant relationship, and to determine whether EL varies statistically according to demographic factors. For this purpose; a survey has been carried out in Zonguldak province in Turkiye and the data were obtained by a face- to-face survey method of 433 workers actively working in the service sector. These data have been tested with reliability, correlation, simple linear regression, multiple variance analysis, independent sample T-test and one-way variance analysis. Because of the reliability analysis carried out, it has been determined that the scales used in the research have high internal consistency. The correlation analysis indicates a moderate and positive relationship between the normative and emotional commitment dimensions of EL and OC. Because of simple linear regression analyses; it has been determined that the 1-unit increase in emotional commitment caused an increase of 0.693 units on EL and a 1-unit increase in normative commitment caused an increase of 0.959 units on EL.

THE MEDIATING ROLE OF PERCEIVED SUPERVISOR SUPPORT BETWEEN PRESENTEEISM AND EMPLOYEE PERFORMANCE: A STUDY OF SUGAR MANUFACTURING IN ERZINCAN, TURKEY

    Bas, M. U. R. A. T.; Ayaz, Mohammed Qasim

There is a broad understanding that a relationship exists between leaders' behavior and employees' reaction, particularly in the sense of presenteeism, which ensures the good health of employees. However, we agree that much less is understood about potential mediating processes that underline the links between supervisory support, presenteeism and employees' support. In this study, the indicators of employee performance are linked with presenteeism, while supervisor support plays a mediating factor. We linked social learning theory, where individuals value observable behaviors. The findings of the study revealed a positive relationship between presenteeism and employee performance in Erzincan state of Turkey. The study found positive mediation of supervisory support between presenteeism and employee performance. The relationship of the research model was tested with the help of implementation of adopted questionnaires from 280 individuals who responded as potential participants. The analysis explored positive remarks of the hypothesis (accepted). The findings of the study, contributes to both the academic and non-academic arenas, leading to potential understanding as to the importance of both presenteeism and supervisory support.

Examining the Relationship Between National Economic Policy Uncertainty and Stock Market Indices: An Empirical Analysis for Selected European Countries

    Saka Ilgin, Kubra

The literature on economics and finance accepts uncertainty as an important factor affecting investor behavior. As a reflection of what is expected from countries' economies, economic policy uncertainty indices were developed based on the USA economy and then were diversified for different countries and formed based on the news. Economic policy uncertainty can be a guide for stock market investors in estimating stock returns, in line with the effects cash flows have on stock returns. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between economic policy uncertainty and stock market indices. The study investigates the relationship between the data Europe's leading stock markets indices and these countries' national economic policy uncertainty indices within the scope of panel data analyses using the panel autoregressive distributed lag model/pooled mean group estimator (ARDL/PMG). The five European countries examined in this direction are; Germany, Italy, England, France, and Spain. A panel data-set was created using these countries' national economic policy uncertainty indices for the December 2002-October 2021 period and benchmark stock market indices' closing prices. According to the research results, significant short-term and long-term negative relationships have been determined to exist between the indices of Europe's leading stock markets and the respective economic policy uncertainty indices for the whole panel. The short-term correlation coefficients per country; show a significant negative relationship to exist between economic policy uncertainty and stock market index prices for all examined countries. In line with the findings obtained from the study; the national economic policy uncertainty indices in European countries can be said to be leading indicators for guiding investors in estimating stock market returns.

Healthcare workers’ socio-psychological status after a year with COVID-19 pandemic: a cross-sectional face-to-face survey in Erzincan, Turkey

Taş, Hakan Gökalp; Kuyrukluyildiz, Nursel; Akkus, Mustafa; Kuyrukluyildiz, Ufuk

Introduction: on January 7th 2020, SARS-CoV-2 was identified in Wuhan, China, and on March 11th, 2020, the World Health Organization declared it a "Pandemic". The aim of this research is to assess depression, anxiety, work, and social status in healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: the research was designed to be a cross-sectional face-to-face survey. The study included 111 healthcare employees and 222 non-healthcare workers between the ages of 18 and 65 who applied to the hospital. For some reason, no one was excluded from the research. Socio-demographic and lifestyle-related questions, depression, anxiety, work-social adjustment scores, and pandemic-social status-operation connections were all assessed using a self-report questionnaire containing psychometric measures. Results: the mean age of the participants in the study was 33.67±10.01 and 59% of the participants were female. PHQ9: 11.67±6.41, GAD7: 9.06±5.81, and W&SAS: 17.55±10.98 were the scores of the healthcare professional groups. PHQ9: 10.25±6.21, GAD7: 7.59±5.65, and W&SAS: 14.75±10.27 were the non-healthcare professional groups' results. When the PHQ9, GAD7, and W&SAS scores of both groups were compared, there was no statistically significant difference in the PHQ9 depression score between the two groups (p=0.107), the GAD7 (p<0.05) and W&SAS (p<0.05) scores of the healthcare professionals were statistically significantly higher. Conclusion: in comparison to the non-healthcare worker group, healthcare professionals had the same level of depression, greater levels of moderate and high anxiety, and higher levels of work-social adjustment disorder. Unlike the literature, we found that the degree of depression fell to the same level as the non-health professional group in our study, but it was still disadvantaged in terms of anxiety and work-social adjustment.

Relationship between Person-Environment Fit Types and Turnover Intention: A Moderated Mediation Model

Kerse, Gökhan; Koçak, Daimi; Babadaǧ, Mustafa

In this study, drawing on Hobfoll's Conservation of Resources (COR) Theory, we tested a moderated mediation model that investigates person-organization (PO) fit as the mediator and person-job (PJ) fit as the moderator in the relationship between person-supervisor (PS) fit and turnover intention. Data were collected from 232 bank employees in Turkey by using a survey method. Consistent with hypothesized conceptual scheme, results showed that PO fit mediated the relationship between PS fit and turnover intention. Furthermore, moderated mediation results indicate that PJ fit not only moderated the relationship between PS fit and PO fit but also reinforced the indirect effect of PS fit on turnover intention (via PO fit). We argue that indirect effect of PS fit on turnover intention through PO fit was stronger for employees with high job fit than for employees with low job fit. The theoretical and practical implications, limitations, and future research directions are also discussed.

How Perceived Organizational Obstruction Influences Job Satisfaction: The Roles of Interactional Justice and Organizational Identification

    Koçak, Daimi; Kerse, Gökhan

In this study, the concept of perceived organizational obstruction was discussed and the results of the perception of obstruction were determined with reference to social exchange theory perspective. In this context, we tested a moderated mediation model that examines organizational identification as the mediator and interactional justice as the moderator in the relationship between perceived organizational obstruction and job satisfaction. Research data were obtained through the survey technique from 293 employees of a hospital in Turkey. In the findings of the analysis, it was observed that organizational identification has a mediating effect on the relationship between perceived organizational obstruction and job satisfaction. In addition, it was determined that interactional justice has a moderator effect on the relationship between perceived organizational obstruction and organizational identification. Furthermore, results supported the moderated mediation model and showed that the indirect effect of perceived organizational obstruction on job satisfaction through organizational identification was stronger under low interactional justice than under high interactional justice. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Economic impact of the COVID-19 outbreak in Turkey: analysis of vulnerability and resilience of regions and diversely affected economic sectors

Tuysuz, Suat; Baycan, Tüzin; Altuğ, Fatih

The COVID-19 outbreak has deeply affected the global economy of most countries and Turkey is no exception. However, the impacts of the outbreak differ on a regional basis, and both scientists and policymakers have neglected this regional differentiation. In an attempt to redress this situation, our study aimed to reveal the regional disparities related to the economic impacts of the outbreak and the dynamics that created this differentiation in Turkey. Our statistical analyses were carried out based on two different periods. The first period covered the first trimester when the outbreak began, and several shutdowns were implemented. The second period covered the second trimester when society began to open up again. The first trimester was termed the shock period, and the second trimester the recovery period. We developed a resilient–vulnerability index based on selected variables such as employment, energy consumption, exports, and the number of companies established and closed using a location quotient (LQ) analysis. While our index offers a picture of resilient and vulnerable regions, we also used this index as a dependent variable in our study. In the second stage, we focused on what kinds of dynamics gave rise to the resilience or vulnerability of a region. Our findings revealed that regions are economically affected by the outbreak at different levels. The regression analysis results showed that the innovation capacity and export levels of the regions predict regional resilience negatively, while firm size predicts positively. The recovery of regions also differed regionally. Our analyses show that Turkish regions with relatively larger economies recover more slowly, while regions with smaller economies recover more quickly.

Economic Policy Uncertainty and Tourism in Croatia: A Wavelet Analysis

Demir, Ender; Bilgin, Mehmet Huseyin; Karabulut, Gokhan; Doker, Asli Cansin

By using wavelet analysis, we find that domestic Economic Policy Uncertainty (EPU) has short and long-term adverse effects on domestic tourism in Croatia. Domestic and global EPU (GEPU) have a negative relationship with foreign arrivals; however, the impact of domestic EPU on foreign arrivals is significantly bigger. The co-movements between nights of stay per domestic tourists and domestic EPU are positive in the short and the long run, while the relationship with GEPU is negative. Our findings for the foreign arrivals per tourist is the opposite of those for the domestic. There is a positive relationship between foreign arrivals per tourist and GEPU.

The Impact of Supervisor-Subordinate Incongruence in Power Distance Orientation on Subordinate Job Strain and Subsequent Job Performance

Richard, Orlando; Triana, María del Carmen; Yücel, İlhami; Li, Mingxiang; Pinkham, Brian

Employee strain is estimated to cost American companies as much as $500 billion in lost productivity annually, and a leading cause of workforce stress is disagreements with other people (Cook, 2017; Mental Health America, 2017). In this study, we investigate supervisor-subordinate value incongruence as a cause of employee strain. Specifically, this study examines the effect of supervisor-subordinate power distance orientation incongruence on the subordinate’s job strain which, in turn, influences the subordinate’s job performance. Using a sample of 172 supervisor-subordinate dyads, we find that incongruence on power distance orientation increases subordinate job strain. Supervisor-subordinate incongruence resulted in more job strain which, in turn, resulted in lower job performance. Results reveal that the alignment of subordinates’ cultural values with those of their supervisors may mitigate negative experiences and facilitate more positive work outcomes.

Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on exports: new evidence from selected European Union countries and Turkey

    Cengiz, Orhan; Manga, Müge

The COVID-19 pandemic, a new type of coronavirus that the world faced, broke out at the end of 2019 causing numerous impacts on all countries. Particularly the European Union (EU) countries were notably affected by COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns and stringency policies. Furthermore, although Turkey was successful in combating many areas of the COVID-19 pandemic compared to the EU countries, its international trade was affected. This paper empirically investigates the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on selected EU countries (Bulgaria, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Czechia) and Turkey’s exports with monthly panel data analyses over the March 2020–December 2021 period. The findings suggest that the COVID-19 pandemic had negative impacts on exports in the EU and Turkey. For example, a 1% increase in COVID-19 stringency reduced exports by 0.102%, and a 1% increase in total COVID-19 cases caused a decline in exports of 1.620%. Furthermore, the Dumitrescu–Hurlin panel causality test results show a two-way causality relationship between COVID-19 cases and export levels. In addition, unidirectional causality linkage exists from the COVID-19 stringency index. Therefore, causality test results confirm an impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on exports during the stringency measures and lockdowns.

Açıksöz Newspaper and News About the Greek Occupation in Bursa

    Kılavuz, Nuran; Tanik, Ibrahim Halil

Newspapers are among the most important media organs in transferring daily events to the public. The occupation of Anatolia after the Mondros Armistice Agreement, especially the occupation of Izmir on May 15, 1919, caused a great passion in the eyes of the public. Against these invasions, National Forces (Kuva-yı Milliye) was established through Defense of Rights and Refusal Societies (Müdafaa-yı Hukuk ve Redd-i İlhak Cemiyetleri). During this period, many media outlets in Anatolia acted to support the resistance of Anatolia against invasions. One of the most important newspapers contributing to the War of Independence is the Açıksöz newspaper, which started its publication life in Kastamonu. In this study, the developments in Bursa and its vicinity during the Greek occupation period are mentioned. These developments were evaluated within the framework of the information obtained from the Açıksöz newspaper, and at the same time, archive documents and copyright works were used. Thus, the efforts of the newspaper to fulfill an important task in a difficult period and what happened during the Greek occupation period other than official records were tried to be examined. The situations that civilians were exposed to during the occupation period, the occupiers’ policy of destruction and insult along with atrocities constitute the content of this study.

The effect of working capital components on sectoral averages: an application on the manufacturing industry

    Toraman, Cengiz; Sönmez, Adem Ruhan

In this study, the data of 147 companies whose stocks are traded in Borsa Istanbul and operating in the manufacturing sector between 2011-2019 and the probability of working capital management to be above the sector average of companies' return on assets and equity profitability was examined. Panel logistic regression analysis was used in the study. As a result of the analysis; 1% increase in the current ratio increases the probability of the company to be above the sectoral asset profitability ratio, while the 1% increase in the receivable turnover period, cash ratio and stock turnover period reduce the probability of the company being above the sector average. Likewise, a 1% increase in the current ratio increases the probability of the company to be above the sectoral equity profitability ratio, while the 1% increase in the receivable turnover period and stock turnover decreases the probability that the company's return on equity ratio is above the sector average, while the change in the cash ratio increases the company's sectoral equity profitability. It has been found that it does not affect the probability of being above the rate.
